Welcome to our September 2018 Issue. 

A new term, a new school year! We wish all children starng, moving 

to or just moving up a great academic year, learn lots and enjoy your 

year. If you do have a child in years 9 – 13 please take note of the Next Steps Evening 

(pg 26) being put on by Gillingham School and supported by Gillingham Chamber of 

Commerce. This is not exclusive to Gillingham children, so if you are interested in 

finding out all opons available please go along. 

A gentle fairy story this month from Rik Lonsdale (pg 32). We are also looking at 

local author Paul Hooley who launches his new book at the Mere Literary Fesval on 

October 10th (Pg 22). If you are thinking about renng out a property pop in and 

chat to Hamlet (pg 5), they are always needing properes to let to their long list of 

potenal tenants. 

Thanks to Steve Hawkins for his atmospheric sun set on our front cover. Our cut-off 

date for events and adversing is the 10th of September for the October issue. Now 

is the me to get December events to us as we become ght on space around then.

Youth help out with Weeding 

The URC Church is very prominent in the centre of The Town of Mere, but the 

weeds, despite the lack of rain, were getting out of hand. The local youth have 

come to the rescue. It is great to see the local youth charity that was and is 

helped by Wiltshire Council performing so well.

Local girl, only 8 years old inspires action! 

If you are a frequent shopper in Tesco Shaftesbury, you have probably noticed 

the improvement to the entrance by the recycling area. Rather than a hedge 

along there which has encouraged fly tipping over the years, creating a very 

unsightly area, there is now a new fence to discourage this from happening. 

Tesco have a policy to support local communities in a variety of ways and they 

have respected a request, initiated by 9-year-old, local girl, Aoife to resolve 

this issue. 

Aoife took the initiative and wrote a passionate letter to Shaftesbury Town 

Council expressing her concerns for the constant littering in the area she said 

that the rubbish building up is spoiling the natural beauty in Shaftesbury and 

wanted to put a stop to it, she stated; ‘This is a hedge not a bin!’.

Following this Shaftesbury Town Council talked with Tesco about working 

with the community to improve this area, it didn’t take long for the area to 

be transformed. Shaftesbury Town Council would like to express a massive 

thank you well done to this little girl who is proud of her town and eager to 

see changes to make it a clean and tidy place to live! Who knows what Aoife 

will achieve in the future!

Serves: 6-8 

Ingredients 

750g/1lb 10oz Bramley apples, peeled, 

cored, quartered and sliced 

1½ tsp ground cinnamon 

½ unwaxed lemon, zest only 

2 tsp lemon juice 

100g/3½oz golden caster sugar 

75g/2½oz raisins 

95g/3½oz butter 

40g/1½oz white breadcrumbs 

6 large sheets filo pastry 

1 tbsp icing sugar 

Method 

Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 

5. Line a baking tray with baking 

parchment. 

Mix the quartered apples with the 

cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar 

and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 

20g/¾oz butter and fry the breadcrumbs 

until golden-brown, then add these to the 

apple mixture. 

Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a 

clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo 

and brush with some of the melted 

butter. Lay another sheet on top and 

repeat until you have used all the filo. 

Layering the pastry with the melted 

butter helps to create flaky layers. 

Place the filling along the length of the 

pastry along one side about 2-3cm/1in 

from the edge. Using the tea-towel to 

help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the 

filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the 

strudel seam-side down onto the lined 

baking sheet. Brush with the remaining 

melted butter. 

Bake for 40-45 minutes, until goldenbrown. 

Leave to cool to room 

temperature and dust with icing sugar. 

Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or 

custard.

Nuremberg's Voice of Doom

A recently discovered manuscript – consisting of an important military record and a 

fascinating human-interest story – is to be published in a book to be launched at this 

year’s Mere Literary Festival*. 

Nuremberg’s Voice of Doom is the autobiography of Wolfe Frank – Chief Interpreter at 

the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals – as compiled, edited and expanded upon by 

local author and historian Paul Hooley. 

The book is a story of two interwoven themes. One of love, adventure and excitement, 

the other of a former German resistance worker’s fight for the right to become a British 

Army officer, and his extraordinary commitment to service, duty and justice – which was 

seen to be scrupulously fair to, and by, the prosecution, defence lawyers and war 

criminals alike – throughout what was described as being ‘the greatest and most 

important trials the world has ever seen’. 

Mere was chosen as the place to launch Nuremberg’s Voice of Doom as, quite apart 

from its growing importance as a literary festival, this Wiltshire town was where Wolfe 

Frank spent his final years and where he completed his memoirs – which he hoped 

would be published posthumously. 

*Nuremberg’s Voice of Doom will be officially launched following a presentation of the 

book to be given by Paul Hooley at 2.30 pm on Wednesday 10 th October in the Grove 

Building, Church Street, Mere, Wiltshire BA12 6DS (admission free).

On Thursday 1st November, from 6pm to 8pm, Gillingham School is thrilled to be staging its 

Next Steps Careers Fair for students of years 9 to 13, their parents and those of neighbouring 

schools. 

This is our fifth year of running this event and each year it gets bigger and better. If you have 

been before you will know that the event is well subscribed to by organisations and students. 

It has a vibrant and exciting atmosphere. Inviting parents is particularly effective in ensuring 

that the young people make the very best of the opportunity. 

We recently received this accolade about the event ‘I attended your last Careers Fair with 

Camps International and I found it a tremendous success’. 

The purpose of the evening is to introduce students to all possible opportunities available to 

them at whichever point they choose to leave full time education. For this reason, we 

include: colleges, universities, apprenticeship education providers, volunteer and gap year 

organisations, as well as employers. Our intent is to have representation from as many 

employers as possible, covering a wide variety of sectors and entry levels. 

In the past the evening has been very well attended and the feedback has demonstrated how 

beneficial it was for both the young people and their parents who often feel at a loss when 

giving their children informed advice about potential careers. Having now expanded our 

coverage to include years 9 and 10 this should result in footfall in the 100s.

Charlies bar has re-opened after recent refurbishments along with new management in 

the Wine Bar, Queen street; We were delighted to hear that the local TSB has decided not

TSB. Work continues on the old ‘Paws Jaws & Claws’ building, excited to see who will be 

filling this commercial space, opening another shop on the High Street, Folks it is very 

important to continue to support and use the local businesses to keep the local economy 

buoyant; 

Our Network Happy Hour Evening will be taking place on the second Thursday of the 

month, we welcome fellow business owners to join us in the Wine Bar for a Happy Hour 

Event to have a chat and a chance to network so please drop by and join us on Thursday 

13 th September from 6pm until 7ish. 

Gillingham Chamber has continued to support local events, In the month of June we 

supported Gillingham in Gear and The Great Get Together. Both events were well 

attended, the sun shone all day making both days fabulous fun for the whole family; 

We are looking forward to August 15 th when Gillingham and Shaftesbury show will be 

held at the showground, come along and support the event which is normally attended 

by 1000s of people, Local Businesses will be displaying their services and products, 

In September we shall be joining the partners of Farnfields and Nicholls to help host the 

quarterly Breakfast Club meetings held at the local Rugby Club, these events are very 

well attended, interesting talks and a great place to Network. Further information can

I am also excited to announce that after our Skillsfest evening at the Olive Bowl, Rebecca 

Antil, our Vice Chairman, and Fran Hill, our Marketing Manager, have had talks 

with Gillingham school to help organise the “Next Steps Evening” on the 1st November 

introducing local businesses of Gillingham to the young students, 

some offering local apprentice schemes or employment 

opportunities and advice on routes to success. This is very exciting 

and we look forward to working with our local school for a 

successful event to benefit all.
