Halloween Safety Tips
Walk Safely: Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Put
electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as
far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest
street crossings. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to
never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
Trick or Treat with an Adult: Children under the age of 12 should not be alone
at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without
supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat
in groups.
Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe: Decorate costumes and bags with
reflective tape or stickers and if possible, choose light colors. Choose face paint
and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s
vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by
drivers. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips
and falls.
Drive Extra Safely on Halloween: Slow down and be especially alert in residential
neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable
ways. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. Eliminate any distractions
inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Drive
slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the
day to spot children from greater distances. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30
PM to 9:30 PM so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

Green Park for some fall fun and a movie in the
park! Come early to enjoy some games, hayrides,
photo booth and pie baking contest!

DESERT IVY SPLASH PAD
The splash pad is open from March 1 st thru
October 31 st during the hours of 8 AM and 9 PM.
Please report non-working splash pad features
and/or other splash pad concerns to Crest
Management at 281-579-0761.
SPLASH PAD RULES
1. Non-service animals prohibited.
2. Do not drink the water from the water feature.
3. Use of the water feature while ill with diarrhea
is prohibited.
4. Changing diapers within 6 feet of the water
feature is prohibited.
5. Use of the water feature while ill with a
contagious disease is prohibited.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Board of Green Trails Phase II HOA would like
to invite our residents to volunteer for our GTHOA
committees to support these efforts.
The GTHOA Board would like to thank all of our
volunteers for their dedication and commitment
to the community. Our volunteers are tremendous
people that utilize their personal time to develop

and grow our great community. The volunteers
deserve a grand round of applause from all of us.
The GTHOA committees depend on volunteers
from our neighborhood to continue to keep our
neighborhood strong and beautiful and these
committees need the help and support from all
of our residents. GTHOA has a need for your help
with the local committees in the following areas:
Community Events: There are several community
events throughout the year that are organized
and operated by our volunteers. GT has had great
success with these events but need your help with
future events. In additional to event organizers,
volunteers are also needed to help with smaller tasks
prior to each event or help on the day of the event.

Pool: Green Trails Phase II has two pools located
at the Gerri Ayers Recreation Center and the Park
Cypress Recreation Center that need volunteers
to monitor and inspect the pool grounds, pool
furniture, pool party schedules, etc.
Parks: Green Trails Phase II has six parks listed
below that are beautiful and vibrant. The park
volunteers are needed to monitor the playground
equipment, grounds, splash pads, water
fountains and garbage canisters and also help
with budget planning and reporting maintenance
needs. The pools and tennis courts in these parks
are monitored separately from Park volunteers,
however, we encourage all residents to “see
something, say something.”

Landscape: The landscape committee volunteers
continue to keep our community beautiful. This is
by far the largest committee within our community,
which requires a great number of volunteers
and support. There are several sub committees
within the landscape committee and volunteers
are needed to continue the success of this great
committee. The areas of need are many but to name
a few: budget planning, trees, pruning and flowers.
Finance: The finance committee ensures that the
GTHOA finances are being utilized wisely. The
committee reviews the monthly financial statements
prepared by the management company and submits
any questions to the Board liaison. In addition, the
committee reviews the annual audit and is involved
with both budget and investment planning. If you
have experience or just an interest in these areas, the
finance committee can always use more help!
Beautification: GTHOA has motivated the local
MUD to develop a beautification plan for the
I-10 intersections at Fry Rd., Greenhouse, and
Barker Cypress. This committee is in search
of a committee chair, area monitors budget
planning, MUD liaison, landscape oversight and
landscape planning. The volunteers are needed
to help monitor these areas, plan budgets,
future landscape plans, communicate with the
landscape contractor, communicate with the
MUD and continue the success of keeping these
areas beautiful. These intersections are the grand
entrances into our community and the first points
of sight that our neighbors, friends and relatives
encounter when entering the neighborhood.
Communication: The Green Trails Phase II website
and official Facebook page are in need of a
communications director. The director will monitor
the website to ensure official information has been
posted when needed and facilitate communications
for the official Facebook page. The director will
communicate with the management company to
post neighborhood information for our residents.
This is a great communication tool for our residents to
receive quality information about our neighborhood.
The communication director is needed in this area
ensure this quality of information.
Beginning with our September 6th GTHOA Board
meeting, the Board began the 2019 budget
process. The GTHOA Board will look to our
volunteers for ideas, support and planning for this
budget season process. Volunteering is a great
way to introduce ideas into our community and
ensure a successful planning process to keep our
community alive and vibrant.

HAVE A DESIRE TO BE PART OF SOMETHING BIG?
The Green Trails HOA has an amazing opportunity for volunteers to be part of
the newly developing I-10 and Fry Rd. beautification project. Come be a part
of this great adventure to help keep our community a thriving, beautiful, top
place to live in the Katy area. This volunteer team will help an already chosen
landscape architect develop and maintain the landscaping framework for
the I-10 and Fry Rd intersection and turn this area into a beautiful entry point
into the surrounding community that leads into the Green Trails subdivision.
The landscape architect has completed the plans and work will begin this fall.
Future projects are expected at the intersections of I-10 and Green House as
well as I-10 and Barker Cypress; future dates are TBD based on the success of
the first intersection. If you are interested, please contact Heather Esteban at

MOSQUITO CONTROL
Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito
Control, but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program includes
removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these problem areas:
1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths which can hold dampness
or water
2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters
3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles around
house.
4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes after
watering, you are over watering.
5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray under
deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain. Plastic under
decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.
SHORT TERM RENTALS NOT ALLOWED
Please be aware that short-term rentals of rooms or entire properties are a
violation of deed restrictions.
DOGGIE DON’TS
Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a leash and picking up after
your pets. We thank you! HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog owners
allowing their dogs to defecate and urinate in yards. This is especially a problem
in high-traffic areas near park entrances. Be aware that it is not just your dog.
Once a yard has been “used,” other dogs want to do so as well. A resident should

not have to pick up after even one dog, much less ten. In addition, runners and
walkers in our parks don’t enjoy dodging excrement. Please carry a bag and
pick up after your pet. Remember also, that even the sweetest dog may seem
intimidating to some people. Respect their rights and comply with leash laws.
TRASH PICKUP REMINDER
This is a reminder that Green Trails offers back door trash pickup. Please put
your household garbage in front of your garage door for pickup outside of
the breezeway fence. Heavy trash and recyclables must be taken to the curb
for pickup.
Do Not Put Trash Out the Night Before Pickup
Please put your trash out the morning of trash pickup. If you put your trash
out the night before trash pickup this allows cats and other animals to be
able to get into your trash causing a mess on the street for the trash collection
workers or yourself to deal with.

Remember, ALL exterior changes made to your home or yard [including your
fence] require Architectural Review Committee approval first. In need of

Thanks to a resident’s timely call, the constables made an arrest in connection to
car burglaries. However we need to continue common sense security practices.
Note that 90% of the car burglaries in the neighborhood were of unlocked cars.
Lock your cars and remove valuables. Report any burglaries, even if only items of
minimal value were taken.
PAINTED CONCRETE
No concrete that is visible from any street, whether a driveway, sidewalk,
patio or other improvement, shall be painted or stained any color. Concrete
that is not visible from any street may be painted or stained only with ARC
approval.

The Website for Green Trails Phase II (www.greentrailstwo.com) has a “blast
email” function. This feature allows the Association to send news to residents
on a mass basis. The Board of Directors intends to start utilizing this function
more frequently to disseminate important information, particularly in
emergencies like Hurricane Ike.
If you have not registered and would like to do so, please go to the “Join Our
Mailing List” section of the Website. The only information that you need to
enter is your email address. Each of the other items is optional, including
your name. None of the information will be distributed to third parties.

ACTIVATING THE LIGHTS
There is a timer switch on the Crescent Green courts on the south side of court
1. The timer has a button, which cycles through 15, 30, 45, 60 & 120 minutes
and OFF. The lights on the pole on the south side between courts 1 and 2 will
act as a safety light. On the Park Cypress court, there is a timer switch on the
light pole as you enter.
COURT RESERVATIONS
Court Reservation signup sheets are posted on the bulletin boards at both
the Crescent Green and Park Cypress courts. Residents must use last names
only. Residents may reserve a court no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1
1/2 hour time period only by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the signup
sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes). If your match extends beyond your
reserved time period and no one else is waiting to use the court, you are free
to continue playing. These rules are posted on the bulletin boards and are
designed to allow maximum court usage for all residents.
For safety reasons, tennis activities using a basket of balls are not permitted
during prime time on the Crescent Green courts. Multiple balls lying on the
courts is a safety hazard for others using the courts. Prime hours are every day,
8-10:30 AM and 6-9 PM. The court on Park Cypress is a single court on which
multiple balls lying on the ground is not a hazard to others. If you want to use a
basket of balls, reserve the court on Park Cypress.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH AND ADHERE TO THE POSTED GREEN TRAILS TENNIS
COURT POLICIES CAN RESULT IN DEACTIVATION OF YOUR CARD KEY FOR ONE
MONTH.
Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time or to
reserve the courts for a SPECIAL event in advance, must contact the tennis
committee for approval through Greg Kubala, 281-507-6343 or Jim Haylett,
281-795-3552.
LEAGUE TENNIS:
Ladies HLTA and WHLTA tennis leagues are approved to play on Mondays
and Wednesdays in the Fall and Spring from 9 AM-12 PM. Currently there is a
A-2 team playing on Monday and Championship and a A-3 teams playing on
Wednesday. Our league rosters are currently full but if you are interested in
playing ladies league tennis contact Elaine Kearney to get on a wait list for the
following season, 281-492-6848.
MISCELLANOUS
ACCESS CARDS: New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact
Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Please
do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card.
VANDALISM: Your yearly maintenance fees directly pay for vandalism on
the courts. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice
amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children know
if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable
will be called to escort them home. Anyone can report vandalism directly to the
Constable at 281-463-6666, in the effort to keep our neighborhood’s common
areas in good condition.

Legacy Parent Academy
The Katy ISD Legacy Parent Academy is a series of informational
sessions specifically designed to assist parents by providing valuable
information that relates to topics that go beyond the academic experience.
In today’s world, we know parents and guardians are faced with decisions
that will profoundly impact the future growth and development of their
student. The goal of the Katy ISD Legacy Parent Academy is to equip
parents with strategies and techniques to support their students. All
parents and guardians of Katy ISD students are welcome to attend. ​
The 2018-19 sessions will feature presentations from experts in topics
that address emotional well-being, college preparedness and financial aid

This festival is done annually to support the continuous efforts to disseminate
the Puerto Rican and Cuban cultures within the city of Houston. We also want to

and letting them know that they have a strong support group. Additionally, we are
educating the citizens of the City of Houston about who we are and asking them
to embrace our cultures in a friendly and festive environment.
Texas Renaissance Festival - Weekends thru November 25, 2018, 9 AM-8 PM,
21778 FM 1774, Todd Mission, TX 77363. Admission varies. The Texas Renaissance
Festival is an interactive theme park that embraces different eras, including the
16 th century and beyond. The 55-acre theater is filled with live entertainment, food
and shops. The enchanted 55-acre village comes to life as all of Europe comes to
pay homage to the King and Queen with Eight Themed Weekends. Hundreds of
costumed performers are showcased in over 200 daily performances. Visitors meander
along shaded cobblestone walkways visiting almost 400 shoppes overflowing
with unique arts and crafts of offering delicious foods and beverages. All ages will
be amused by the games of skill and human-powered rides.
6 th Annual Fall Fest - Fridays, 12-7 PM, North Shore Rotary Pavilion, 14350 1/2
Wallisville Rd., Houston, TX 77049. Part food festival, part music festival, CTC’s
“Fall Fest” is an excellent opportunity to bring a taste of Chicago to Houston area
residents. This one-day, Chicago, cultural festival features several food vendors,
who offer Chicago culinary classics. Additionally, the event features DJs who will
spin a variety of music types including: House music, which is an internationally
known style of music born in Chicago which gave birth to techno and EDM. Also,
the event hosts a dance lounge where attendees can learn Stepping which is a nationally
known dance style born in Chicago and similar to this area’s two-step and
swing out dance styles. Event entry tickets for ages 14 & up are only $5 advanced,
$10 at the gate. It is FREE for attendees age 13 and under.
Comedy Night at HPL - Monthly on the 3 rd Thursday, 6-8 PM. Houston Public
Library, 500 Mckinney Avenue, Houston, TX 77002. Admission is free. The Houston
Public Library offers “Open Mic” comedy night where local and non local comedians,
comediennes, ventriloquists and impressionists of ALL ages present family
comedy to the audience. Improv Performers from Station Theater closes out the
night with games that involve the audience. Everyone who participates in at least
one open mic throughout the year become eligible to participate in the Annual
Comedy competition which is held in December. Prizes in the amounts of $100
and $75 gift cards are given to the 4 winners. Two adult and two youth. Event is

Flea by Night - third Saturday of every month unless affected by weather, 6-10

this monthly, one-of-a-kind market nestled in the southeast end of the downtown
park. The destination market features an array of artful kitsch, vintage items,
mid-century modern furniture, recycled and repurposed items and collectibles

and crafts by local artisans and designers. Whether you are a bargain hunter or
an eco-sensitive collector dedicated to repurposing and reusing, seek and find at
Discovery Green Flea by Night while enjoying light bites and local entertainment.

Carlos Cruz-Diez at the Cistern: Spatial Chromointerference - Weekly through
January 13, 2019. Cistern At Buffalo Bayou Park, 105 Sabine Street, Houston, TX
77007. Times: Wednesday through Friday - 3:30-6 PM; Saturday and Sunday - 11
AM-6 PM. Admission: $10 per person; $8 for Seniors, Youth and Students. The Cistern’s
distinctive architecture as well as its sheer size and raw interior, punctuated
by a series of rhythmical columns, will make for an intriguing and interactive experience.
Visitors to Carlos Cruz-Diez at the Cistern: Spatial Chromointerference will
be encouraged to wear white or light colored clothing and will actively participate
in viewing as the color changes creating a sensation of movement.
Open House - Daily from dawn until dusk through February 28, 2019, admission
free. Sam Houston Park, 1100 Bagby, Houston, TX 77002. The artistic duo, Havel
Ruck Projects, made up of local artists, Dan Havel and Dean Ruck, transformed
a previously abandoned house into an interactive temporary public sculpture.
Sourced from Cherry House Moving Company, the 1940s-era house was originally
located in Santa Fe, Texas. After moving the home to Sam Houston Park in April,
Havel and Ruck stripped the structure’s interior and exterior using drill saws and
other tools. They cut circular holes into the walls and filled them with PVC pipe to
create a “Swiss cheese” or “lace” appearance and collaged the interior walls with
vintage images sourced from family, friends and local resale shops representing
the city’s people, places and past.

On August 15 th , Katy Area Retired Educators (KARE) held its annual Hooky
Day to kick off the new school year. Over 100 retired KARE members were
in attendance to celebrate “Preserving the Past, Securing the Future” and
to welcome new retirees.
You’re welcome to bring a retired educator, friend or neighbor who is not
a current member to join us. KARE represents anyone who has worked in
a school district and retired through the Teacher Retirement System. For

OCTOBER IS
BREAST CANCER
AWARENESS MONTH
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is
dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early
detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM
started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members.
Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public
service organizations, professional associations and government
agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October,
which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member
organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the
message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt
treatment saves lives.
The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women
age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year
and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.
The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day,
first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout
the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography
appointment.

3 STEPS TO EARLY DETECTION
One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
However, with early detection and treatment, you can greatly improve
your chance of survival.
Early detection means finding the cancer before it spreads to other
parts of the body. Although breast cancer cannot be completely prevented,
early detection provides the greatest possibility of successful
treatment. By following these three steps, you will help increase your
chance of detecting cancer early.
CHANGES TO LOOK FOR INCLUDE:
• A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
• Dimpling or puckering in the skin of the breast
• A nipple turned inward into the breast
• Discharge (fluid) from the nipple
• Scaly, red or swollen skin on the breast, nipple or areola (the dark
area of skin at the center of the breast)
You should see your health care provider about any of these symptoms.
Often these symptoms are not due to cancer, but if you notice
any changes in your body, tell your health care provider immediately
so that the problems can be diagnosed and treated.
2. WELL-WOMAN EXAM
It is recommended that women visit their family physician or gynecologist
each year for an annual Well-Woman Exam. In addition to a
routine pelvic exam and pap smear, the doctor may perform a brief
breast exam to check for abnormalities. The Well-Woman Exam is a
great opportunity for you to discuss with your health care provider
any questions or concerns you have regarding your breast health. For
example, your doctor may help you to determine the most appropriate
frequency for your early detection steps.
3. MAMMOGRAM
In its early stages, breast cancer doesn’t usually cause symptoms. NBCF
recommends that women ages 40 and older get a mammogram every
year. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It is a safe way to detect
cancerous tumors and other abnormal breast conditions and women
who have screening mammograms have a lower chance of dying from
breast cancer than women who do not have screening mammograms.
Mammograms can detect cancer or other problems before a lump
becomes large enough to be detectable to the touch. They provide an
effective way to find breast cancer in its early stages when treatment is
usually the most successful. Mammograms are considered safe, quick
and relatively painless.

1. BREAST SELF-AWARENESS
Breast self-awareness can help you become familiar with how your
breasts normally look and feel. Knowing this will help you identify any
changes in your breasts that should be reported to your health care
professional promptly. If you find a lump, schedule an appointment
with your doctor, but don’t panic - 8 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous.

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow
the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and
dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in
open mesh bags or old panty hose.
• Flowers planted for spring can begin when the
temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees
can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root
growth through the winter and the more headstart they
can get before summer, the better.
• October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting
daylilies.
• Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These
circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is
activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil.
• If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month.
The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden
off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit
trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak
and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches
to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when
temperature is between 30-60 degrees.
• Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed.
Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until
March, the earlier the better.
• Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your
spring populations.
• Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best
to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and
November. At least two applications are usually needed,
even if done this early.
• For color throughout the winter, begin planting
pansies.

CAJUN CHICKEN AND SAUSAGE GUMBO
You could make this on National Gumbo Day October 12 th !
INGREDIENTS
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 large onion, chopped
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
2 celery stalks, chopped
1 pound andouille or smoked sausage, sliced 1/4 inch thick
4 cloves garlic, minced
salt and pepper to taste
Creole seasoning to taste
6 cups chicken broth
1 bay leaf
1 rotisserie chicken, boned and shredded
DIRECTIONS
Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. When hot, whisk in flour. Continue whisking
until the roux has cooked to the color of chocolate milk, 8 to 10 minutes. Be careful not to
burn the roux. If you see black specks in the mixture, start over.
Stir onion, bell pepper, celery and sausage into the roux; cook 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic
and cook another 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and Creole seasoning; blend thoroughly.
Pour in the chicken broth and add the bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat, then
reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir
in the chicken and simmer 1 hour more. Skim off any foam that floats to the top during the

DOUBLE LAYER PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE

INGREDIENTS
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 pinch ground cloves
2 eggs 1 pinch ground nutmeg
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
1/2 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). In a large bowl, combine cream cheese,
sugar and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Blend in eggs one at a time. Remove 1 cup of batter
and spread into bottom of crust; set aside.
Add pumpkin, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the remaining batter and stir gently until
well blended. Carefully spread over the batter in the crust. Bake in preheated oven for 35
to 40 minutes or until center is almost set. Allow to cool, then refrigerate for 3 hours or
overnight. Cover with whipped topping before serving.
