There’s more brilliant news on the job creation front! Our policies that 

promote a stronger Australian economy continue to deliver more jobs for 

Aussies. 

We have more people in work than ever before with employment at a 

record high of 12,631,300. The national unemployment rate is 5.3%, the 

equal lowest rate recorded in the last six years. The next goal is for all of 

us to work together and get it down to a number starting with a 4! 

Over a million (1,144,500) jobs have been created since the Government 

came to office in 2013. Many full-time jobs have been created from the 

Government’s record infrastructure investment. 

In August alone, our Aussie businesses created 44,000 new jobs 

(seasonally adjusted). 

Full time jobs held by women rose by 12,500 in August, and have 

increased by 2.5% over the last year to now stand at a record high of 

3,168,200. 

Jobs held by young people increased by 7,100 over the month, to stand 

at 1,936,300 in August, and is now 2.8% above the level recorded a year 

ago. 

The Government’s plan for a stronger economy is working but there 

is more work to do. I look forward to engaging and working with you 

over the rest of this year, and into next year, on how we can make our 

neighbourhood, and nation, an even better place to call home!

Dear Sir, 

I would like to thank 

Paul Dawson for his letter 

(‘Missing footpath on 

Ryde Bridge’) in which he 

asks when maintenance 

work on the Ryde Bridge 

footpath is due to be completed. 

In reply, the advice I’ve 

received is that the work 

is being undertaken by a 

contractor on behalf of the 

State Government (Roads 

and Maritime) as part of the 

rehabilitation of the heritagelisted 

bridge. 

I’m told that the works will 

not be completed until the 

second half of next year. 

Council is not involved. 

Mr Dawson mentions 

people being crammed into 

Ryde. I agree. 

For years Ryde has been a 

State Government target for 

Over Development with 63 

percent of all dwellings from 

2014-2018 being approved 

by the State Government. 

In addition, they have just 

slapped an enormous additional 

7,600 dwelling housing 

target on Ryde, to be 

delivered within five years. 

We’ll need more than just 

new footpaths to cope with 

this State Government.

Sprinkler systems 

can save homes 

Dear Sir, 

With the advent of the 

bush fire season this 

Spring no mention is ever 

made of an easily installed 

sprinkler system on the 

roofs of houses in bush 

fire prone areas. 

Dwellings become alight 

because of the embers carried 

by the prevailing wind 

and become well and truly 

aflame before the main fire 

comes through. 

Very simple for a handyman 

to install and connect 

to the water system or backyard 

pool. 

Most importantly don’t 

connect to an electric pump 

because the electricity service 

in most cases is the first 

to suffer in bushfires. 

A good example of this 

situation was in the Adelaide 

hills bushfires in the eighties. 

Kim Bonython, a famous 

South Australian, lost his 

heritage home and all of his 

memorabilia because an 

electric pump was installed 

instead of a petrol one. 

This type of sprinkler system 

installation could be a 

growth industry for some

Commission 

Dear Sir, 

The PM recently announced 

a Royal Commission 

to report on the state 

of play with Aged Care facilities. 

The government says in no 

way was it influenced by the 

forthcoming ABC 4 Corners 

investigation. 

If one were to believe this, 

then that one would probably 

be a strong advocate 

for the fairies at the bottom 

of the garden proposition. 

At a presser following the 

commission announcement, 

PM Morrison took exception 

to a suggestion by journo 

Rick Moreton, who claims 

the government has already 

taken $1.2 million out of the 

Aged Care budget. 

The PM took this claim 

badly. Mr Moreton, who has 

studied in detail, this topic 

for the previous five years 

persisted with his claim. 

One noticeable result was 

an inference that Moreton 

was a liar, and gone in a 

flash was the new generation, 

affable, smiling, I’m on 

your side and go Sharkies, 

PM Morrison. 

For mine, my money is on 

the journalist!

A letter from Des Moore 

from Sydney drew my attention 

as it spoke of Turnbull’s 

departure as a good 

thing for Australia. 

According to Mr Moore 

the previous PM held an 

“obsessive belief in dangerous 

global warming” and 

that these beliefs led him to 

develop policies that were 

“adverse and totally unnecessary”. 

I wondered who this Des 

Moore was and it seems he 

may well be the chair and 

founder of the Institute for 

Private Enterprise. 

This «think tank» promotes 

less government, less regulation 

and more of a free

Laudable but irrelevant 

when it comes to our domestic 

and global responsibilities 

on climate. 

Mr Moore is a climate 

change sceptic and proponent 

of the truly loopy Lord 

Monckton. Monckton is the 

greatest of climate change 

deniers and yet has absolutely 

no background in science 

or climatology. He›s a 

nay sayer of monumental 

proportions. 

Mr Moore also thinks it 

would be a great idea to 

include Tony Abbott in the 

new PM›s cabinet. 

This is the same man who 

signed us up to the Paris 

agreement in the first place 

but now states we should 

renege on that commitment. 

This is also the chief sniper, 

underminer and protagonist 

in the downfall of the past 

PM. How anyone would 

consider Abbott for any responsible 

role is laughable. 

I want to see stable government 

with decisions 

made based on evidence 

and expert advise, decisions 

that will benefit our country 

and the global community. 

This is not what the coalition 

has been providing of 

late, instead preferring to 

inflict on us with poorly considered 

policies that are all 

about re-election.

I don’t think Russell 

Edwards understood or 

interpreted correctly myletter 

to the TWT dated 

12/09/18. 

For your benefit Russell I 

will repeat the main points 

again and may I suggest 

you try and read it a bit 

slower this time. 

Based on the latest released 

figures it is a fact 

that at least 35 percent of 

the population of Vancouver 

has a Chinese background. 

Not Asian Russell, just 

Chinese. 

You do know I hope, that 

Asia is made up of more 

than just China. 

One is not even counting 

the others of Asian background 

that reside there. 

The locals we spoke to 

were angry and frustrated 

to see their city virtually 

turn into one big China 

town. 

House prices have gone 

through the roof with 

cashed up Chinese buyers 

and developers playing a 

prominent role. 

We were told of locals 

unable to compete in the 

market, forced to move out 

or at best to the city’s far 

outer edges. 

We saw homeless everywhere. 

People complained 

about their government’s 

policies of allowing one 

ethnic group to virtuallydominate. 

There is no Silent Invasion 

in Vancouver just a 

virtual open take over. 

Unless our useless federal 

governments stop it 

the same thing will surely 

happen here. 

The overwhelming evidence 

is there for all to see 

now.

Russell do you think 

the Chinese government 

would ever allow another 

ethnic group to make up 

35 percent of say Shanghai’s 

total population or 

allow foreigners or foreign 

governments to buy up 

and control vast amounts 

of farming land, residential

projects.

the other day at Top Ryde 

Shopping Centre and I 

have enclosed information

celebrate 30th Anniversary 

AUGUST 28, 1988 

was the date a group 

of retired women held 

the inaugural meeting 

of the Hunters Hill Ladies 

Probus Club at the 

then Hunters Hill Ladies 

Bowling Club (now the 

Croquet Club). 

Our Club was formed 

under the guidance of 

Hunters Hill Rotary Club 

and the Formation Meeting 

was chaired by Bill 

Jacobs, who was President 

of Hunters Hill Rotary 

at that time. 

Joy Mackeddie was 

elected our first President. 

Now, thirty years later 

in August 2018, our Club 

has a current membership 

of sixty which augurs well 

for its future.

Premier Gladys gets tough 

on local councillors 

TOUGH new codes of conduct for local councillors are set 

to come into force this year with a “three strikes and you’re 

out” penalty for misconduct. 

The Berejiklian government’s 

new laws 

also crackdown on 

discrimination, harassment, 

bullying, 

breaches of workplaces 

health and safety 

and a misuse of social 

media. 

Local Government 

Minister Gabrielle Upton 

(pictured) said the 

new laws are needed 

to ensure councillor’s 

conduct meets the expectations 

of the community. 

“The new Model Code 

of Conduct stamps out 

the bad behaviour we 

have seen among a 

small number of councillors 

who have acted 

in self-interest,” Ms 

Upton said. 

“Any councillor who 

abuses public office 

for personal or financial 

gain is firmly in the 

sights of the new Model 

Code of Conduct. 

“For example the acceptance 

of lavish gifts 

is now a thing of the 

past because there is 

now a $50 limit. 

“There are also restrictions 

on access 

to council information, 

strict requirements for 

declaring interests, 

and the requirement 

Councillors must disclose 

whether they are 

a property developer 

or a close associate of 

one.” 

The new Model Code 

of Conduct will now 

require the mandatory 

reporting of all gifts 

and will prohibit councillors 

from accessing 

information about matters 

they have pecuniary 

interests in, unless 

it is otherwise publicly 

available 

Suspensions for 

pecuniary interest 

breaches will count 

towards the “three 

strikes and you’re out” 

penalyty where councillors 

face automatic 

disqualification. 

Councils will have six 

months to adopt and 

implement codes of 

conduct that meet the 

new requirements. 

“The training programs 

are designed 

to ensure mayors and 

councillors understand 

their responsibilities.” 

Information about 

councillor participation 

in professional development 

activities must 

also be published in 

council annual reports.

Hunters Hill community pays tribute to retiring Barry Smith 

TWO Emeritus Mayors and other community leaders paid tribute the 

Hunters Hill General Manager Barry Smith on Monday night, who leaves 

the job today (Wednesday) after 22 years service. 

In an historic council 

meeting, Mr Smith 

served alongside 

new General Manager 

Lisa Miscamble 

who officially starts 

her term on Thursday. 

Emeritus Mayors 

Sue Hoopmann OAM 

and Richard Quinn 

said Mr Smith had 

ensured the survival 

of the heritage 

municipality during 

the last year’s battle 

against a proposed 

state government 

forced merger. 

“During the forced 

merger Barry Smith 

risked his standing 

and none of us would 

be here tonight without 

his support,” 

Richard Quinn said. 

“And while some 

other councils have 

faced corruption and 

code of conduct issues, 

this council 

has stayed out of the 

news and a lot of that 

is due to Barry.”

had restored community 

confidence in 

Hunters Hill Council 

at a time of crisis. 

“When Barry arrived 

22 years ago the 

community was still 

reeling about the loss 

of a previous general

networking was invaluable 

and still is. 

“It is one of the reasons 

we are still here 

and why residents 

say he has done a 

good job, and he 

has.”

He also expressed

Hill’s future. 

“Financially we are 

ok in Hunters Hill 

but we do need to 

be vigilant and that 

is the challenge that 

lies ahead,” he said. 

“Hunters Hill is a 

little place, we may 

take longer to get 

things done but in 

the end we end up 

getting things done 

better.”

decades and has 

worked under six

Damien Tudehope falls on his sword 

to save NSW treasurer’s political life 

Epping MP Damien Tudehope will not contest his seat in the March election. 

The Liberal MP has opted 

to give up his job in the 

nominally blue ribbon seat 

to save the career of State 

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet 

and end the political strife 

that has torn the Berejiklian 

Government apart in recent 

days. 

Mr Tudehope is now expected 

to be offered a seat 

in the Upper House. 

Mr Perrottet had earlier 

indicated he wanted to reclaim 

the seat of Castle Hill 

from his colleague Ray Williams 

and claimed his current 

seat of Hawkesbury 

took him from his family. 

Mr Williams responded 

with an explosive media 

statement demanding Mr 

Perrottet step down as deputy 

Liberal leader. 

Mr Tudehope’s decision to 

fall on his sword is seen as 

a way to resolve the crisis, 

which has rocked the government. 

He issued a statement to 

The Weekly Times yesterday. 

“Faced with difficult circumstances, 

I identified an 

opportunity where I was in 

a position to resolve a very 

difficult situation, and chose 

to do so for the good of the 

Government,” he said. 

“So I made an offer to the 

Premier and the Treasurer 

that I would step down as 

MAYOR’S COMMUNITY MESSAGE 

the Liberal candidate for the 

seat of Epping,” he said. 

“This will allow the Treasurer, 

who lives in the electorate, 

to nominate for preselection 

for the seat. 

“This was not an easy decision 

for me but ultimately I 

believe it was the right one 

for the Government.” 

He said it has been a privilege 

to serve Epping. 

“ I am extremely grateful 

to the people of Epping for 

electing me as the Member 

for Epping and I look forward 

to continuing to serve 

them diligently in the coming 

months, leading up to 

the election. 

“I have worked tirelessly 

over the last few years to 

deliver for my electorate 

and I have been successful 

in securing funding for 

a lift at Beecroft station, $5 

million for a cycleway from 

Pennant Hills to Epping, and 

$50 million to widen Epping 

Bridge,” he said. 

The Epping MP expressed 

confidence in Mr Perrottet. 

“ I know that if elected 

as the member for Epping 

Dominic Perrottet will continue 

to deliver for the people 

of the electorate.” 

“The financial position of 

NSW is the envy of the other 

States, and the Treasurer 

has had a significant part to 

play in this prosperity.” 

Congratulations SWAP winners 

It was a great night at Meadowbank’s See Street Gallery 

last week to celebrate the opening night of the City of Ryde 

Sustainable Waste to Art Prize (SWAP) Exhibition. 

This is a unique competition in which local artists are asked 

to produce artworks made from repurposed material or 

that have a sustainable theme, with more than 200 entries 

received for this year’s competition. 

The talent and creativity of our local 

artists really is evident when you see the 

works on display at the exhibit with some 

amazing creations made from nothing 

more than used buttons, tea bags or even 

noxious weeds. 

I would encourage everyone to get down 

to See Street Gallery between now and 

4 October and see firsthand this terrific 

exhibition. The exhibition is open Tuesday 

to Saturday between 11.00am and 4.00pm. 

‘Ryde’s Barangaroo’ a sign of 

things to come 

Since I became Mayor of the City of Ryde, 

it has been a promise of mine to increase 

funding towards open space, passive 

recreation and place making. 

An example of this is the new seawall at 

Morrison Bay Park in Putney. Described 

as ‘Ryde’s Barangaroo’ the eye-catching 

seawall enhances the local foreshore 

area, and is complemented by a new 

shared-path for pedestrians and cyclists 

along the waterfront. 

This new facility will benefit young and old 

for generations and is just a sign of things 

to come. 

Rovers celebrate milestone 

Congratulations to the Rover section of 

Scouts Australia which this month marks 

its 100th anniversary. 

Rovers are a vital and active part of 

scouting, undertaking an array of 

activities that contribute to their personal 

development, as well as being committed 

to giving service to the community. This

home for sale or for lease. Flooring 

plays such a big part in this, and unlike 

curtains or furniture, is not the kind of 

thing you then take-up and discard 

if you don’t like it – hence the importance 

of making the right decision first

Selling your home: 

Often your sales agent will advise if the carpet 

or other flooring needs an update. Remember 

you are doing this to suit the future owner, 

not yourself. My rule of thumb is to buy a good 

carpet at the best possible price and to keep 

the colours fairly neutral. John Coote Carpets

charcoals, better to put a lighter carpet in that 

the new owner can live with for a few years until 

they can replace it with their dream flooring. 

With hard flooring, a good laminate or vinyl

look just as good. Keep the real timber for your 

new home. And a wonky floor installation will 

put prospective buyers off. All they will see is 

$ signs for having it replaced or repaired. John

Generally speaking tenants do not look after 

carpet or hard flooring the way an owner will. 

Carpet costs a lot less than hard flooring to 

install and to replace if damaged, so in most 

situations is the better option.

the timber look, vinyl planks and are extremely 

hard wearing. 

They might cost a bit more than sheet vinyl 

but you will not need to change them with every 

new tenant. 

Vinyl planks and many of the new laminates 

on the market do have waterproof properties, 

and if laid correctly can be a good investment. 

Again, important to remember you are not 

living in the property. We have great products 

in store that look far better than what they 

cost – keep the emotions out of your decision 

making if you can!

renamed the Council’s 

Harmony Committee 

the Multicultural 

Committee but the 

new name has not impressed 

the council’s 

Liberal Party leader Clr 

Sarkis Yedian OAM. 

Councillor Yedelian was 

absent from last Tuesday 

night’s meeting that approved 

the name change, 

which reflects some community 

concerns the word 

“harmony” suggests community 

disunity. 

Committee member Clr 

Yedelian told The Weekly 

Times the new name fails 

to reflect the range of the 

work the committee does 

or the importance of this 

work. 

“This is not just about 

multiculturalism, we have 

worked hard to fight discrimination 

based on gender 

and religion and many 

other forms of discrimination 

that leads to disharmony,” 

he said. 

“And I’m very upset that 

this name change was 

passed without consultation 

with the community 

and with the whole community.” 

Councillor Yedelian is the 

Chair of Ryde’s Multicultural 

Centre and said the 

Centre was not consulted,

Festival celebrates 150 years 

of Granny Smith’s apples 

This year’s Granny Smith Festival celebrates 150 years 

since the first Granny Smith apple was grown on the 

farm property of Granny Smith at what is now called 

Eastwood. 

The first known Granny Smith apple was grown in 1868 on the 

farm of Maria Ann “Granny” Smith which is now commemorated 

with the Granny Smith Memorial Park in Threlfall Street Eastwood. 

Granny Smith is buried 

in St Anne’s church Ryde 

where she was a regular 

worshipper with her family 

who are also buried in 

the church graveyard. 

This year’s festival 

promises to be bigger 

and better than ever with 

a wide range of free entertainment

Eastwood Tai Chi 

celebrates 10 years

Over the weekend, the Eastwood Tai Chi group 

celebrated their 10thanniversary at a lunch attended 

by members and special guests. 

What first began as just a small gathering of 

Eastwood locals 10 years ago, the group has 

grown rapidly and now fills the whole Plaza each 

morning. 

Today, it is hard to imagine Eastwood without 

their graceful movements and music. 

In 2009, the group received Ryde Council’s official 

approval to use the Plaza for their activities. 

The group was also instrumental in convincing 

Ryde Council to make Eastwood Plaza smokefree 

in 2015. 

Led by Master Zhang (one of the big mural faces 

on the walls of Eastwood Library), the group attracts 

participants from all corners of Sydney. 

Their activities are free and the group welcomes 

peoples from all cultures and all ages (including 

beginners). 

As attendeesof the group will tell everybody, 

practicing Tai Chi regularly has enormous health 

benefits. 

If for no other reason to give it a try, practitioners 

are often mistaken for being 10 years younger 

than their real age!

Drummoyne to benefit 

from hundreds of new 

local bus services 

MORE buses have been put on to serve the Drummoyne 

Electorate, local MP John Sidoti announced on 

Monday.

Chamber’s Traffic and Transport Forum Breakfast at Optus Macquarie Park on Monday

shows the daily average 

of cancelled trips 

per day fell from about 

128 to 18 between 

July and August 6 

which is an improvement

Pink Link Station Fleet ready to roll 

A fleet of 120 pink Station Link buses 

are ready to roll out on Sunday to replace 

train services between Epping 

and Chatswood while changes are 

made for the metro line. 

Drivers have been training for several weeks 

from the temporary Camellia depot (pictured) 

for seven different routes linking station to station. 

Staff wearing distinctive pink clothing will be 

at stations to assist travellers. 

Opal card charges on the buses will be the 

same as standard train fares. 

The Standard Link pink buses are being operated 

by a joint venture of Transdev and Hillsbus.

Train services between Epping and Chatswood will be 

replaced with Station Link, a new high frequency, turn-upand-go, 

bus service. There are seven different Station Link 

routes that connect customers from station to station. 

Staff will be there to ensure you get to where you need 

to go. 

Opal 

You will need a valid Opal card to travel on Station Link and 

charges are the same as a standard train fare. Download 

the Opal Travel app so you can top up wherever you are. 

Train and Bus Service Adjustments 

There will be 350 additional weekly bus services introduced 

to existing routes in Macquarie Park, Lane Cove and Epping 

from 30 September. There will also be some adjustments 

to train services, including more express services on the T1 

Northern Line to Central via Strathfield.

once I understood the focus

did not change his vote 

but appealed to the church 

for understanding. 

“I said the reason I spoke 

in opposition to it was one 

of principle,” he said. 

“I now think the intent 

behind it was very noble 

but I don’t think we should 

make changes with a development 

freeze on. 

“I hope you will understand 

my position.” 

The council will now notify 

the NSW Department of

of the new decision.

Anthony Roberts welcomes 

new surge in seniors cards 

THE Seniors Card 

program has been an 

outstanding success 

with the number of

Sydney Tramway Museum

PROBUS Club of Ryde members recently enjoyed a visit to the Sydney Tramway Museum at Loftus, 

braving the cold and wet conditions. Boarding the tram the conductor handed each member 

an original two penny tram ticket before embarking on a tram ride to the National Park. 

The group spent an hour 

inspecting the old trams in 

the Museum building including 

a very spooky prison 

tram without windows, 

only vents near the wooden 

roof, and inside steel barred 

sliding doors closed over 

cubicles that had held the 

prisoners. They had a great 

time inspecting this unique 

attraction in the Sutherland 

Shire for over 50 years.

Heel Pain - the importance of knowing the causes

As we sleep our feet are 

placed in a position that 

allows the plantar fascia to 

relax and shorten. As this 

tissue shortens throughout 

your sleep, the first step in 

the morning causes it to 

suddenly stretch, pulling 

forcefully on its insertion in 

your heel, resulting in excruciating 

pain. 

Q: What is plantar 

heel pain? 

A: There are a range 

of conditions that cause 

heel pain, the most common 

being plantar fasciopathy, 

otherwise referred 

to as ‘heel spurs’ 

or ‘plantar fasciitis’. 

There is often a misconception 

that heel 

spurs are the direct 

cause of heel pain, however 

many people live 

day to day with spurs 

and are asymptomatic. 

Generally, it is the irritation 

to the plantar fascia, 

a rope-like structure 

that when lengthened 

or stretched, is prone to 

micro-trauma or tears 

within the tissue. 

What causes heel 

pain? 

Lengthening or tensile 

stress placed through 

the plantar fascia can 

be the result of how we 

walk or load our foot 

structures in ways they 

cannot withstand for 

long periods. How our 

feet biomechanically 

operate in combination 

with posterior muscle 

tightness and weakness 

are major contributors 

to plantar fascial pain.

to determine if 

these factors are directly 

involved, is vital in accurately

from nearby St Joseph’s College visit the Hunters Hill home for a weekly 

check-in with their favourite residents.

From talking to the residents 

about their home lives to discussing

The students even say it relates 

back to their schoolwork when 

they leave the aged care home 

and return to the classroom. 

“Sometimes we have to write 

stories, for English class,” explains 

one of the students. 

“Speaking with the residents 

really helps with that process – 

they have some really inspirational 

things to share.” 

Aside from the educational 

impact, interaction with the St 

Anne’s residents addresses one 

of the major risk factors associated 

with ageing: social isolation. 

Programs like the St Joseph’s 

students’ weekly visitation is 

just one of the initiatives contributing 

to the increased focus 

on reducing depression experienced 

by residents and clients. 

They also provide

for the Australian 

Catholic University 

students completing 

their degrees in 

nursing.

Ron and Betty Palmer are 

still bowling each other over 

IF there was such thing as local bowling royalty, Ron and Betty Palmer 

would surely be favourites for the title. 

The couple met in the 

late 1950s at Parramatta’s 

Rivoli Dance Hall and 

shortly after were walking 

down the aisle, celebrating 

their 62nd wedding 

anniversary last Saturday. 

“It’s been magnificent 

really,” Ron told The 

Weekly Times. 

“We’ve had a wonderful 

life and we’re still enjoying 

it.” 

Born in the northern 

NSW town of Inverell, 

Ron moved to Sydney 

at the age of 12 and was 

always involved in some 

form of sport. 

In his early years he 

played roller hockey and 

later in life took up game 

fishing with the Broken 

Bay Game Fishing Club. 

He was also a keen and 

talented golfer but forced 

retirement only left him 

with itchy feet. 

Being an equally avid 

spectator also helps. 

Just like TWT’s One 

Eyed Tiger, Ron only appears 

to have one eye 

when viewing the state of 

play in the NRL - and that 

eye is dedicated to the 

Balmain Tigers. 

But Ron can thank his 

brother for suggesting he 

take up what would ultimately 

became his most 

successful sporting pursuit, 

lawn bowling. 

In 1976 he tried it and 

liked it - so did Betty - 

and their shared love of 

the sport has only made 

their relationship stronger, 

allowing them to share 

successes and cherished 

memories on the bowling 

green together. 

Betty, who grew up and 

has lived in West Ryde 

all her life, is also an accomplished 

bowler and 

partners Ron in mixed 

events. 

They’ve had long association 

with lawn bowling, 

both on and off the green 

and are well-known within 

the bowls community 

in TWT territory. 

They both served on the 

board of the now-defunct 

Eastwood Bowling Club, 

including Ron’s 14 years 

RON and Betty Palmer on their wedding day in 1956. 

as president and his 30- 

plus years as a national 

umpire and coach. 

And while Ron laments 

the struggle for survival 

many bowling clubs 

presently face, along 

with the reality they’ll be 

forced to either merge 

with other clubs or close 

down, the Palmers’ success 

on the green has 

continued unabated. 

“Bowls is still a big part 

of our lives,” Ron says. 

“I’m still playing and I 

can hold my own with 

the younger blokes at the 

club - and that’s a good 

thing.” 

Over at the place the 

Palmers now call home - 

Brush Park Bowling Club 

- the Ron Palmer Triples 

tournament, named after 

him, is testimony to the 

respect both Ron and 

Betty enjoy as members 

of the local bowling community. 

In fact Ron was skipper 

of this year’s triumphant 

Palmer Triples winning 

combination. 

Ron has earned the 

nickname “the smiling 

assassin” and apparently, 

many of his competitors 

over the years would 

understand why. 

Former Ryde Mayor 

and self-confessed 

“bowling nut” Vic Tagg 

has played against Ron 

and believes he’s been a 

great ambassador for the 

sport. 

“Ron’s always been 

a top bowler and he always 

leads from the 

front,” he said. 

The Weekly Times was 

especially keen to accurately 

quantify the extent 

of both Ron and Betty’s 

titles success, but despite 

our best efforts, 

Ron said he didn’t know 

because “I don’t keep 

count”. 

Eventually he was able 

to confirm they had 

“each won around 61 titles”. 

According to the best 

available information 

TWT was able to cobble 

together, Ron’s record 

includes 20-odd singles 

club championships, 13 

pairs titles, about a dozen 

triples, several mixed 

fours titles with Betty, 

various district singles 

and fours events plus a

during his heyday, who shared 

a few laughs while talking about 

Souths’ halcyon days in the 1960s 

and early ‘70s. Rod - a former Burwood

visit with Souths Cares after his 

dad struggled to get around after

Diplomatic problems hamper 

Cecilia Haddad trial in Brazil

A DIPLOMATIC impasse has prevented New South Wales police being 

present at this week’s opening of the trial of the man accused of killing 

Ryde business woman Cecilia Haddad (pictured). 

A judge at Rio de Janeiro’s 

Court of Justice 

requested NSW police 

be present for the hearing 

which started this 

week but Australian authorities 

said NSW detectives 

were unable to 

be there because they 

are still to be officially 

invited by the Brazilian 

Government. 

Thirty eight year old 

Brazilian born Ryde 

businesswoman Cecilia 

Haddad’s body was 

found in Sydney’s Lane 

Cove River on April 29, 

this year after she was 

allegedly strangled and 

had weights placed in 

her pockets. 

The same morning her 

estranged boyfriend 

Mario Marcelo Santoro 

(40) is alleged to have 

fled Australia for his 

native Rio de Janeiro 

where he was arrested 

by local police who suspect 

he sought to avoid 

prosecution because 

there is no extradition 

agreement between 

Australia and Brazil. 

He remained on Australia’s 

most wanted 

list for more than two 

months, as the NSW 

Homicide Squad detectives 

built a case 

against him. 

In another twist to the 

case, Santoro is not being 

charged with murder 

but with feminicidethe 

killing of a woman 

because she is a woman 

- a law introduced in 

Brazil in 2015, to combat 

escalating rates of 

domestic violence. 

New South Wales Police 

have consistently 

sought to put Santoro 

on trial in Sydney because 

the crime was allegedly 

committed here 

but Brazilian authorities 

believe their nation’s 

extraterritoriality laws 

allow for justice to be 

served in the homeland 

of both the alleged victim 

and the accused. 

Some aspects of the 

local investigation were 

recently passed on to 

Brazil’s homicide police, 

in the form of a 

police “fact sheet” but 

no tangible evidence 

is known to have been 

sent to Brazil for forensic 

testing. 

Santoro is expected to 

testify before the judge 

when the case returns 

to court next month but 

his defence team have 

asked for the case to be 

thrown out due to a lack 

of evidence.

The police pusuit commenced

32 and 23 - were apprehended

by a police foot patrol 

in Hunters Hill after the 

bike was dumped in 

Howards Place. 

The 23-year-old man 

was taken to Royal 

North Shore Hospital 

under police guard for 

medical treatment and 

the 32-year-old man 

was taken to Ryde Police 

Station for questioning.

‘Battle of the Primary 

Schools’ Dance Eisteddfod 

MORE than 18 northern Sydney primary schools recently 

participated in Marsden High School’s annual ‘Battle of the 

Primary Schools’ dance eisteddfod. 

In a burst of colour, 

movement and 

sound, students 

aged from as young 

as 6 years through 

to 13 danced their 

hearts out over two 

evenings in a range 

of categories such as 

jazz, contemporary 

and mixed genre.

of the ‘Battle of the

said: “The eisteddfod

the talent of primary 

school dance groups

When it comes to selling, shall I 

keep the tenant or sell with it? 

• When the next owner is an investor, this buyer loves to have the immediate 

rental income for sure. Selling with a tenant presents many issues in 

practice. 

• Presentation could be better or worse depending on the quality of your 

tenant. Declustering is not as convenient as if it were from the owner. 

• Staging effect for rental property is challenging too. The tenants daily 

routine could be affected. Many disagree to take away or move the 

furniture display to suit your selling needs. 

• Cleaning is a big factor for open house presentation. It is not uncommon 

for owner to offer this service to make the open house look good. 

• Open house time needs the co-operation of your tenant as well. The law 

protects their privacy and comfort while permits reasonable inspections. 

• If your buyer wants to have vacant possession for self use, the proper 

terms in the contract of selling should be taken care of accordingly.

Farewell tribute to Balmain Junior 

League & Tigers stalwart Bob Carroll

BALMAIN District Football Club is mourning the death of former director 

and long serving Junior League secretary Bob Carroll of Carlingford. 

A tireless voluntary 

worker and respected 

official in rugby league 

circles for more than 30 

years and a proud Ryde 

Rotarian, Bob passed 

away in Westmead 

Hospital last Thursday 

(September 20) at the 

age of 81. 

He was a former president 

of the St Gerards 

Carlingford and St Patricks 

Dundas Junior 

Rugby League Clubs 

and was one of Balmain 

Junior League’s longest 

serving secretaries 

- serving 12 seasons 

from 1983 to 1994. 

During that period 

with Bob at the helm, 

the Tigers won Jersey 

Flegg Cup premierships 

in 1984, 1988 and 

1994 as well as reaching 

Cup Grand Finals in 

1983, 1987 and 1989. 

Only the legendary 

Don Graham served 

more terms as secretary 

of the Balmain 

Junior League - an incredible 

13 successive 

seasons from 1963 to 

1975. 

A life member of the 

Balmain Junior League, 

Bob was a strong advocate 

for grassroots 

rugby league and gave 

outstanding service to 

St Gerards (now Carlingford 

Cougars) and 

St Patricks (now Dundas 

Shamrocks). 

His legacy was fostering 

the sport and 

helping attract healthy 

numbers throughout 

the age divisions and 

helping make the Balmain 

district the powerbase 

of the NSW Junior 

Rugby League. 

He served on the Balmain 

District Football 

Club board during the 

1990s and watched his 

youngest son Bernard 

Carroll develop into a 

first grade forward with 

Balmain, chalking up 

22 top grade appearances 

from 1992 to 

1994. 

In recent years Bob 

enjoyed watching his 

grandchildren play 

sport. 

Only recently he 

watched his 15 year 

old grandson Will Carroll 

- a promising forward 

with Carlingford 

Cougars - in semi final 

action against Dundas 

Shamrocks at T.G Millner 

Field. 

And he would have 

been proud of Will’s 

selection in the U/15 

Balmain Development 

CUBS touring squad 

to Ballina and the Gold 

Coast. 

Bob’s late first wife 

Jan also gave tremendous 

service to St 

Gerards and St Patricks 

and her memory 

is perpetuated each 

year with the Jan Carroll 

Memorial Trophy 

for the Balmain Junior 

League’s U/17 Player 

of the Year. 

He was pre-deceased 

by his first wife Jan and 

survived by second wife 

Lorraine; sons Greg, 

Leon, Peter, Dominic, 

Bernard and daughter 

Anmaree; daughters in 

law Kellie, Sue, Natalia 

and Sal. 

Bob was a loving 

stepfather to Mark and 

Louise; Michael and 

Louise; Lee and Glenn;

and his grandchildren

Stryder bus service ready 

to meet cash challenges 

THE Stryder Community bus service will pursue an on-going commitment to 

sustainability, last Tuesday’s Annual General Meeting was told. 

The Annual General 

Meeting was held at 

the North Ryde RSL 

Community Club and 

was addressed by 

President Ian Dear who 

spoke about Stryder’s 

achievements and 

challenges. 

“The imperative is 

for us to establish a 

sustainable future, 

for when it is decided 

that the block funding 

we enjoy to date is reduced 

or eliminated,” 

Mr Dear said. 

He said the community 

based bus service 

adopted the new name 

“Stryder” to reflect a 

commitmentment to 

the City of Ryde and 

to the many local and 

socially isolated people 

who rely on the service 

for affordable transport. 

“The main rationale 

(of the new name) was 

to enable our provision 

of a more contemporary 

offering in the 

market place and to 

actively compete with 

other modes of public 

transport such as 

buses, taxis, Uber and 

other traditional community 

organisations,” 

he said. 

“Our new name positions 

us for the new 

environment we are 

facing.” 

Guests at the AGM 

told The Weekly Times 

they not only rely on 

the service but have a 

sense of “ownership” 

about it. 

City of Ryde Clr Penny 

Pedersen agreed. 

“This is a service our 

community obviously 

take great pride in and 

values,” she said. 

“My own commitment 

is to see what I can do 

to have this service increased 

to serve more 

people, particularly in 

my own ward of East 

Ryde.” 

Councillor Pedersen 

will also bring to an 

upcoming meeting and 

petition of 300 signatures 

- which she recently 

inherited from a 

deceased resident - to 

support her initiative. 

Mr Dear praised Stryder’s 

staff and volunteers 

for what he described 

as managing 

a very large workload 

with minimal resources. 

“You typify the spirit 

and culture of Stryder 

and we are very grateful 

to you,” he said. 

“As always, my request 

to our members 

is to assist us in 

spreading the word 

about who we are and 

what we offer.” 

Throughout the last 

year Stryder vehicles 

travelled 192,236 kms 

- which included life 

saving trips to doctors 

and hospitals - as well 

as 27,700 funding trips 

to subsidised patrons.

how to claim 40 new state 

government rebates from 20 

government agencies. 

It will be led by Cost Of 

Living Specialist Harry Ramani 

and will be open during 

business hours. 

Although it falls well short 

of TWT demands to reject 

the Climate Change hoax 

behind huge recent hikes 

in energy bills - and will not 

stop the corporate greed 

of road toll owners - it will 

nonetheless pour back cash 

from the so called “polls and 

wires sell-off” back into people’s 

pockets. 

Mr Dominello said it will 

save them hundreds of dollars 

a year. 

“For example, a family 

with two children could 

make savings of more than 

$800 if they are eligible for 

the Family Energy Rebate, 

free car registration through 

the Toll Relief Program, the 

CTC Green Slip Fund and 

the Active Kids Voucher,” he 

said. 

The Weekly Times recently 

interviewed local charities 

that say pensioners and low 

income earners are being 

pushed into homelessness 

due to energy bills and toll 

fees, prompting Mr Dominello 

to stress that pensioners 

would be among those people 

most eligible for the new 

support.’ 

“Pensioner Concession 

Card holders could be eligible 

for savings of almost 

$1,100,” he said. 

Labor leader Luke Foley 

has promised The Weekly 

Times he will review the escalating 

toll fees if elected in 

March and while the Federal 

Government has established 

a new ministry to deal with 

the crippling cost of energy 

bills, it has stopped short 

of standing up to climate 

change alarmists and backing 

safe, reliable and job creating 

fossil fuel (coal) power 

plants.

Valuable Felsch spurs 

Tigers with dashing 85 

UNHERALDED all rounder Ryan Felsch (pictured) has 

wasted little time demonstrating his value for Sydney Cricket 

Club in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade competition. 

The talented Felsch produced 

a power laden 85 to 

help the Tigers open their 

2018-19 campaign last 

Saturday with a thumping 

limited overs victory over 

Western Suburbs at Pratten 

Park. 

Opening the batting with 

young gun Matthew Rodgers 

(16), a revved up Felsch 

was in a dashing mood as 

he hammered four sixes 

and eight boundaries during 

his superb 62-ball knock. 

It was an inspirational 

first-up performance by the 

rising all rounder who is also 

a capable right arm seam 

bowler. 

Felsch should play a pivotal 

role with the ball in 

coming weeks and shapes 

as a trump card for the twoday 

second round clash 

with Bankstown commencing 

this Saturday at Bankstown 

Oval. 

He is also highly regarded 

by club officials as an astute 

young coach, having guided 

the U/16 Tigers to an A.W 

Green Shield championship 

in 2017. 

Tigers’ number four Anthony 

Mosca (57 runs off 97 

balls) also peeled off a half 

century as Sydney posted 

8-259 off their allotted 50 

overs. 

Felsch shared an opening 

stand of 42 with Rodgers 

before adding 41 runs 

for the second wicket with 

emerging all rounder Ben 

Manenti and another 45 

runs for the third wicket with 

the reliable Mosca.

Glendenning, who was

since the competition’s

ago.

stout-hearted Hawks 

advanced to the trophy 

decider after a pulsating 

67-66 extra time victory 

over Manly Sapphires in 

a quality preliminary final 

last week.

EASTWOOD Ryde Hawks Opens netball team have produced one of their most courageous performances in a 

finals series to soar into the 2018 Netball NSW Premier League title decider. 

Eastwood Ryde got 

off to a slow start and 

trailed 8-3 after five minutes 

before settling and 

establishing a 15-12 

quarter time lead. Manly 

were on fire in the second 

quarter and forced 

the Hawks into numerous 

unforced errors before 

grabbing a 31-25 

half time lead. 

The third quarter saw 

Manly stay on top and 

take a 44-37 lead. 

After a pep talk from 

coach Wright the Hawks 

came out in the final 

quarter ready to win with 

Ebony Burnard injected 

into the Hawks line-up 

to give some fresh legs. 

Manly had other 

thoughts and maintained 

their lead. 

With only five minutes 

left on the clock and 

Manly eight goals up the 

Hawks became a team 

possessed. 

Inspired by their captain 

Jessica Grant and 

her defending partner 

Nicole Styles the Hawks 

took three crucial intercepts 

to get them back 

into the game. 

With two minutes 20 

seconds left on the clock 

Manly’s lead had been 

cut back to four goals 

before another Styles 

intercept shaved it to 

three. 

With just 20 seconds 

remaining the Hawks 

were still down by a goal 

with their centre pass 

to follow. The ball was 

cautiously passed into 

the Hawks shooter Ali 

Miller under the post 

to level the scores with 

three seconds left on the 

clock - leaving Hawks 

fans elated. 

Then two tense 7-minute 

periods followed 

to break the deadlock. 

With the score fluctuating 

and both teams unable 

to hold their centre 

pass, the Hawks eventually 

grabbed a two goal 

lead at the end of the 

first extra period. 

Eastwood Ryde managed 

to maintain their 

composure in the second 

period to seal a 

thrilling win.
