LakeForestLeader.com LIFE & ARTS the lake forest leader | September 27, 2018 | 19 Citadel’s latest play has ties to modern themes Erin Yarnall Contributing Editor Even though Lillian Hellman wrote “Little Foxes” in 1939, and the play is set in the early 20th century, the play, which opens at Citadel Theatre Friday, Sept. 28, has many themes that echo throughout modern times, according to the cast. Actors Saren Nofs Snyder and Thomas Thomas both see traits in their respective characters that are relevant to people today. “He could easily be seen as a villain, but he’s not,” Thomas said of his character, Ben. “He’s also not really a very nice person, and the combination of those two things, a man with a vision but not too many morals, has echoes in today’s world.” Thomas said that not only is his character written with depth, but the entirety of “Little Foxes” is as well. “Everybody in it is really richly layered, and has multiple aspects,” Thomas said. Snyder agreed that the audience can relate to her character, Regina, as well. “My character is not unlike any other woman born either in this time period, 1900 in Alabama, or quite a few women today,” Snyder said. “She is a woman who is incredibly intelligent, just as shrewd of a business person as her brothers are, but given her gender she is not given the opportunity to fully express who she is, so she is a woman who is fighting to make a way in the world for herself.” Snyder was particularly thrilled when she was cast as Regina. She said it has been her “bucket list role” since she was a graduate student, and performed in “Another Part of the Forest,” a prequel to “Little Foxes” also written by Hellman. “When I was working on that, I read ‘Little Foxes’ and was hoping I could work on Regina when I became the appropriate age,” Snyder said. “We don’t really look at plays from the standpoint of what happens to the women in them, especially plays back in the ’30s and ’40s, so to get to be this woman who takes control and actually changes her own destiny, I just love it to pieces.” In addition to starring in the play, Snyder is also teaching the play to her class of seniors at the Chicago Academy for the Arts. Her senior class is currently studying the play, and is planning on attending to see their teacher perform the lead role. Kristina McCloskey, the director of “Little Foxes,” said she was drawn to working on the play because of Hellman’s writing. “Lillian Hellman doesn’t write a lot of nonsense,” McCloskey said. “There’s just these really evocative, beautiful lines that come out from time to time that I really think the audience is going to take them with them when they leave.” “Little Foxes” marks Thomas, Snyder and Mc- Closkey’s first time working at Citadel. Thomas said he’s been having “enormous fun” working on the play. “I have really enjoyed the experience,” Thomas said. “It’s a lovely space to work in.” “I’ve been really impressed in terms of the passion and the dedication,” McCloskey said of the Lake Forest-based company. Snyder also believes it’s important to have an accessible theater scene in the suburbs, so residents aren’t obligated to go to Chicago each time they want to see a performance. “Theater really should be for everyone,” Snyder said. “It’s such a difference if you live in one of those communities to not always have to plan almost an entire day to get into the city.
