Teacher Resource <strong>Manual</strong><br />

This is a wet weather activity option only (unless otherwise arranged). During wet weather the use of<br />

this activity will be co-ordinated by <strong>PIAR</strong> Program staff to ensure fairness for all groups.<br />

DESCRIPTION Specialised Activity<br />

The Crate Climb is an artificial climbing activity that is located inside the Auditorium. Participants are<br />

encouraged to challenge themselves by stacking and climbing a single line of crates to climb as high as<br />

they possibly can. This activity can foster self confidence, group support and increased physical coordination<br />

and agility. Participants are harnessed and attached to a belay system for safety.<br />

AGE SUITABILITY<br />

This activity is suitable for participants aged from Grade 5 and above.<br />

ACTIVITY SUPERVISION RATIOS<br />

This activity is not listed in the Victorian DEECD Safety Guidelines for Education Outdoors or the ORC<br />

Adventure Activity Standards therefore ratios have been taken from the Victorian DEECD Safety Guidelines<br />

for Education Outdoors (Artificial Climbing Structures guidelines), as this is considered the closest<br />

representation of Crate Climb.<br />

This is a specialised activity involving harnesses and working at height, therefore a site staff member will<br />

always be instructing this activity. The quantity of school staff required is dependant on the participant<br />

numbers per activity group.<br />

Victorian DEECD<br />

LEADER EXPERIENCE<br />

Site program staff will be instructing this activity at all times, therefore they are deemed to be the Activity<br />

Leader whilst additional school staff are considered the Assistant Activity Leaders. Site program staff are<br />

aware of all relevant safety factors relating to the activity Standard Operating Procedures and will conduct<br />

the session accordingly.<br />

ASSISTANT LEADER EXPERIENCE / RESPONSIBILITY<br />

The Assistant Leaders are required to assist with harnessing of participants as well as having overall<br />

responsibility for the supervision, behaviour and safety of the campers at the activity and to and from the<br />

activity. No previous experience is required.<br />

CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS<br />

Participant clothing requirements for activities using harnesses and helmets are as follows:<br />

• The minimum clothing requirements are a sleeved t-shirt and long shorts.<br />

• The following clothing is NOT appropriate; singlet tops, midriff tops, tank tops or sleeveless shirts,<br />

short/mini shorts and skirts.<br />

• Long hair must be tied back in a low style so the helmet can be fitted correctly and no loose<br />

jewellery or accessories may be worn such as a scarf or long earrings.
