Kaldawy, M.D., Milford Franklin Eye Center What is a cataract and what is cataract surgery? A cataract is a common condition in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes progressively cloudy. When light passes through a clear lens, the light can focus to a point, creating a clear view. When light passes through a cataract, the light gets distorted, creating a blurred view. Compared to vision with a clear lens, your vision with a cataract may look fuzzy, and colors might be muted. These visual disturbances from cataracts are progressive, and when they become bothersome or limit your daily activities, it’s time to consider treatment. Treatment for cataracts involves surgery to remove the cataract and replace it with an intraocular lens implant. It is the most common surgical procedure in the US and around the world and is considered to be an extremely successful and safe procedure. What is laser cataract surgery? Many of the steps of cataract surgery are traditionally performed using handheld tools. Now, they can be completed with Flipside Gym the precision of a laser. Your surgeon can use the laser to create a circular openiang for accessing and removing the cataract. Clinical studies have shown that this opening is more accurate when performed with the laser than what is achievable by hand. Meetings take place on first Tuesdays of each month at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel Cahill Street, from 7 – 9 p.m. An informal social get-together will take place at from 6:30 – 7 p.m. The meeting is open to the public, including those interested in becoming a member of the Garden Club. This year’s programming schedule is: October 2: TBD; November 6: “H” is for Daylilies; December 4: Holiday Auction; February 5: Gardening for Butterflies and Other Pollinators; March 5: Hydroponic Gardening; April 2: Creating Spring Tulip Wreaths; May 7: Container Gardening: June 5 – Annual Meeting. The Club engages recognized gardening experts to present the programs. Three field trips are planned, one to Heritage Gardens in Sandwich, Mass. in October, the second to the Boston Flower Show in March, and the third to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in late spring.
