Active Aging Expo provides ‘one-stop shop’
Bingo, chef demo, singing
performance to round out event
Jon DePaolis, Freelance Reporter
Getting older can mean dealing with
the new or unexpected. But 22nd Century
Media is aiming to make that outlook a
little less murky.
The fourth annual Active Aging – An
Expo for Ages 50+ is scheduled for 9
a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Tinley
Park Convention Center, located at 18451
Convention Center Drive, in the Exhibit
North section. The event, which is sponsored
by DuPage Medical Group and Ingalls
Health System, features more than
30 vendors.
“The expo offers a lot in terms of the
different services available, especially
in the local area,” said Heather Warthen,
chief events officer for 22nd Century
Media. “We have everything from medical
and financial [services] to health and
travel. It really runs the gamut for our aging
population.”
With so many services and businesses
to learn about, the expo provides an excellent
learning opportunity for expo-goers
— not to mention convenience.
“I think it’s great, because it’s almost
like a one-stop shop,” Warthen said of
the expo. “A lot of the time, it would take
someone several appointments or time out
of their day to meet with individual people
[or businesses] like this. I think this is
a great opportunity to hit all of the different
resources in one spot.”
New to this year’s expo is the winner
of the 2018 Orland Township Senior Idol
contest, Phil Orsi, who will be performing
from 10:30-11 a.m. Also coming in for a
cooking demonstration is “the Unforgettable
Chef,” Tom Grotovsky, from 11:45
a.m.-12:30 p.m.
“He has done this for Frankfort Township
seniors [in the past], and we’re really
excited to have him,” Warthen said of
Grotovsky. “He’s also been at our women’s
expo the past couple of years.”
Warthen said bingo — one of the more
popular aspects of the expo — also is returning.
“That’s right, free games of bingo for
all, and we have prizes,” Warthen said.
And as an extra incentive to those who
arrive early, free gift bags will be given to
the first 300 attendees to walk through the
expo doors.
Mapping out the best expo experience
With this being the fourth year of the
Active Aging expo, Warthen has seen it
all. In particular, she’s figured out several
strategies and tips for people planning on
attending this year’s event.
The first? Plan ahead of time.
Warthen suggests visiting
www.22ndcenturymedia.com/aging.
There, expo-goers can take a look at the list
of vendors and make a list of which ones
they absolutely want to see during their
visit to the convention center.
“That helps map out your day,” Warthen
said.
Warthen also suggests that expo-goers
take care of their feet by wearing comfortable
walking shoes. After all, a four-hour
expo is a marathon, not a sprint.
And for those who want one of the 300
free gift bags, Warthen suggests planning
to arrive early — as in being at the convention
center prior to 9 a.m.
Lastly, Warthen asked that expo-goers
“come with an open mind.”
“There may be a service that you are
surprised to find you may need in your
life, and you didn’t even realize it,”
Warthen said.
Aging expo, visit www.22ndcenturymedia.
Dr. Mary Ellen Hoye provides quality dentistry in hometown
Dr. Hoye has been providing
patients and their
families with quality and
caring dentistry for more
than 35 years! She is a resident
of Homer Glen and
loves practicing in the area
she resides.
At Dr. Mary Ellen Hoye
& Dental Specialists of
Homer Glen, they are passionate
about making dental
services personal, comfortable
and long lasting.
There’s so much health
and wellness information
thrown at people every
day, and they are happy
to sit and discuss each patient’s
individual needs.
Ready to replace missing
teeth?
They offer a wide variety
of options to replace
missing teeth, even if they
were removed a number
of years ago! Implants
are a great option if one
is interested in permanent,
non-removable teeth.
How does one take care
of implants? Just like they
would their normal teeth.
How long do they last? In
the absence of trauma or
infection, they will last a
lifetime. Does the patient
have to be put to sleep?
Not at all, they will simply
be numb and comfortable
with local anesthetic.
The in-office Periodontist,
Dr. Robert Baima, has
been in practice for more
than 40 years and has perfected
his placement of
implants.
Call for a free implant
screening!
Ready to replace
dentures?
Dentures can need to be
replaced for many different
reasons. As we age and
change, so do the structures
in our mouth. There
are so many great benefits
to look forward to when
getting a new denture! It
is custom fit for the shape
of your mouth today, your
teeth can be as bright as
you wish, you will have
an extra (your current denture)
to keep at home for
those “just in case” moments,
and more! Is your
denture loose? It may only
need to be relined, and we
can do that for you too! Is
your denture making your
gums sore? It may need an
adjustment, and we can do
that for you too!
Call for a free denture
screening!
Time to smile about not
having dental insurance!
At Dr. Mary Ellen Hoye
& Dental Specialists of
Homer Glen, they understand
that dental care
should be easy and affordable.
Their Premier Plan
is just that, and they are
thrilled to offer it! When
one becomes a member
of the Premier Plan, their
yearly preventative services
are all included!
Plus, there will be additional
savings to use for
corrective services. Take
moment to read feedback
from one of our longtime
patients:
“As a senior, I have been
apprehensive to schedule
dental appointments because
I don’t want to incur
unexpected fees,” Joanna
M. said. “I’m happy to
have found a plan that is
straightforward.”
We look forward to
hearing from you! Please
give us a call for any of
your dental needs. We are
happy to help, in any way
you, or your family may
need!
Be inspired daily at Heartis Village of Orland Park
Heartis Village of Orland
Park is going to change the
way one thinks about aging
and senior living.
It all starts with our
unique perspective. At
Heartis Village, we believe
that every phase of life
should be celebrated and
lived to the fullest. Age is
just a number that shouldn’t
limit anyone’s ability to live
the way they want to live.
That singular belief shapes
every facet of this vibrant
senior living community.
Assisted living
Assisted Living at
Heartis Village is an ideal
option for any older adult
who is unable or no longer
wishes to live alone but
still desires an active, engaging
lifestyle.
Residents enjoy the independence
and privacy of
their own apartment (studio,
one- and two-bedroom
floor plans are available).
If needed, personalized assistance
is available to help
with any of a number of
daily activities, such as getting
dressed in the morning,
safely taking medications
or preparing for bed.
For unparalleled peace
of mind for residents and
families, a licensed nurse
is on site 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.
A Knew Day memory care
A Knew Day® Memory
Care provides a safe and
secure environment complemented
by an enriching
lifestyle for residents
living with dementia or
Alzheimer’s disease. Innovative,
forward-thinking
and dynamic, A Knew Day
is personalized for each
resident, meeting specific
needs and respecting individual
preferences. It
begins with learning each
resident’s life story. That
knowledge then shapes the
program around the resident,
creating a unique experience
for each person.
Residents of A Knew
Day Memory Care enjoy
private studio apartments
nestled within a secure
Active opportunities for seniors abound at Victorian Village
With all the activities
available at Victorian Village,
residents live vibrant
lives at this continuing
care community.
Victorian Village offers
retirement living in apartments
at the Grand Victorian
and in townhomes at
the Courts. They also offer
assisted living and memory
care at the Victorian
Inn, as well as short-term
rehab or long-term skilled
nursing or memory care in
their unique Small Houses.
At all levels of care, Victorian
Village offers life
enrichment and social opportunities
through activities,
events and exercises,
all designed to fit the residents’
unique needs and
abilities.
One way seniors stay active
is through the Senior-
Fitness program, which
gives opportunities for
seniors to stay healthy,
regardless of their level
of mobility. Exercise opportunities
provided by
SeniorFitness all year
long are helping residents
maintain their health and
strength so they can enjoy
a more active retirement.
Recently, residents
enjoyed classes from SeniorFitness
as diverse as
Healthy Hands, Fall Prevention,
gym exercises to
decrease blood pressure
and Sit & Fit.
Not all the activities
at Victorian Village require
a regimen of cardio
or weight training. The
townhome residents gather
monthly for a potluck,
promoting their sense of
community and enriching
friendships. Apartment
residents get together to
play cards and games regularly,
keeping their minds
The Life Enrichment
Department at Victorian
Village also gives residents
a chance to get off
campus, whether or not
they have a car in the parking
lot. They take trips to
grocery and department
stores, as well as field trips
to places like the theater,
the planetarium, or a forest
preserve — all on their
bus. The Victorian Village
bus is on the road at least
three days a week, so residents
have plenty of opportunities
to engage their
surrounding community.
And some of their activity
is linked to those
outside the community.
Currently, residents at Victorian
Village are working
to raise funds for the
Alzheimer’s Association’s
Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
They are joining Life Enrichment
staff to knit and
bake to raise funds for the
walk, and have already
raised more than $1,200.
And there are always opportunities
for the community
to come to Victorian
Village, too. Families and
friends often get involved
in life at Victorian Village,
and are invited to join in
on any activities, outings,
or events that they’re interested
in.
The activities provided
at Victorian Village don’t
only keep people physically
active, but socially
active as well. It’s all part
of living an active and
healthy life, no matter
what your age is.
Victorian Village provides
opportunities for an
active lifestyle across all
levels of care.
udy Ludkey moved into Victorian Village a little over a year ago. It was close to
her family, and she loved the friendliness of the Homer Glen retirement
community – it was a perfect fit.
Retirement living is just one of the services at Victorian Village, which also offers townhouses,
assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and rehab, all on the same campus.
Judy is independent and lived an active life, so she didn’t expect to need any of the other services —
at least, not so soon.
But then the unexpected happened.
“I was climbing a ladder to reach something on a high shelf, and I fell and hit my head,” she says.
The next day, when she started experiencing vertigo, staff and family convinced her she needed to go
to the hospital. After a short stay, her doctor said she would need rehab until the vertigo went away.
“I had a few different choices where I could go, but I chose to go to Victorian Village,” Judy says.
Victorian Village Health & Wellness Center’s offers rehabilitation services right on campus, so Judy
had physical therapy and occupational therapy right there where she lived.
“I couldn’t get over how quickly they got me better,” she says. “The therapists over there are
just wonderful.”
Now Judy is back at home at Victorian Village’s retirement living, with no trace of vertigo.
“I am so pleased for what they did for me,” she says. “I’d recommend it to anyone.”
For more information about any Victorian Village services, contact the community
The core: What is it and
why is it so important?
Exercise is medicine.
Staying active provides
physiological changes
within the body that include,
but are not limited
to: improving
cardiovascular health, impacting
bone density, and
obviously increasing muscular
strength, which allows
people to keep doing
what they love to do for as
long as humanly possible.
The core is a hot topic area
that is emphasized within
the fitness and rehabilitation
industries, however
the core is a poorly defined
area, which leads to inefficient
training and a lack of
consistent results.
A person’s core encompasses
all of the structures
and muscles within the
trunk that provide stability
so the arms and legs can
perform movement efficiently.
Efficiency is a key
point, as we can all agree
that we would like to do as
little as possible to produce
the best results possible.
Muscles that provide hip
stability, such as the gluteus
medius, are included
in the core. Training these
muscles efficiently can
save time, prevent aches,
pain, and injury, as well as
allow a person continue to
do the things that they love
to do.
The body works in a
pattern of regional interdependence,
which means
body regions alternate responsibilities
between stability
and mobility to allow
for efficient movement.
Therefore, developing hip
muscles can directly affect
the areas above and below,
which are the low back
and knees respectively.
One important muscle
that provides hip stability
is the gluteus medius.
This muscle helps to bring
the leg out to the side and
internally rotate the hip.
What this means functionally
is that strengthening
this muscle helps stabilize
the pelvis and can benefit
walking, running and activities
that require single
leg stance or balance. This
is an important muscle to
train!
Balance is important
throughout all phases of
life. Balance is utilized in
everyday activities, sports,
and as people get older balance
is essential to prevent
falls and maintain independence.
Strengthening
the gluteus medius aids in
pelvic stability and helps
improve balance and helps
ensure people stay upright.
Individuals with weak core
muscles are more prone to
falls, decreased mobility in
the spine, slower reflexes
and lower back injuries.
Strengthening the glutes
can help prevent or reduce
knee pain! The knee is
an inherently stable joint
and most knee dysfunction
is a product of weakness
or mobility restrictions
through the hips or
ankles. Weak glutes lead
to increased stress and inefficient
loads transferred
through the knees.
Creating muscular balance
within the core and
pelvic stabilizing muscles
can help prevent and/or reduce
low back pain. Weakness
in the lower abdominals
and gluteal muscles
can lead to increased pressure
on the discs, resulting
in pain. By strengthening
the gluteus medius one
reduces the strain placed
through other muscles that
could be compensating for
the weakness or imbalance.
Simple exercises,
such as “clams” or side
plank variations can help
train these muscles. When
exercising these muscles,
focus should be put on
body alignment and feeling
the muscles fire that
are supposed to be working.
The body finds ways
to compensate for weak
muscles.
Long story short, it is
very important to keep the
gluteus medius strong. If
any of this content resonates
with you or if you
would like more information
about healthy and
efficient strengthening
strategies, contact a physical
therapist today and
discuss how you could be
able to improve the way
you move or perform on a
daily basis. Physical therapists
are movement and
biomechanical experts that
can help you do the things
you would like to do without
pain!
Women’s Healthcare of Illinois provides care throughout life stages
Women’s Healthcare of
Illinois is devoted to providing
comprehensive and
exceptional care to meet
the individual needs of our
patients. We are committed
to serving women throughout
their life stages, from
adolescence through adulthood.
We offer a full range
of medical care for women
specializing in obstetrics
and gynecology services,
as well as urogynecology.
We treat menopause
syndrome, osteoporosis,
vaginal atrophy, uterine
fibroids, endometriosis,
abnormal uterine bleeding,
pelvic pain, pelvic prolapse,
urinary incontinence
and overactive bladder.
We also provide infertility
evaluations, ultrasound,
lab services and Mona
Lisa treatments on site.
We all know menopause
is the conclusion of menstruation
and includes side
effects such as hot flashes
and changes in mood.
But what we aren’t talking
about is that millions
of women also experience
vaginal atrophy, which
includes ongoing vaginal
dryness, itching, burning
and pain with intercourse.
Mona Lisa Touch Therapy
is a minimally-invasive
treatment utilized to improve
the health of the inner
lining of the vagina.
Susan Schreffler found
herself dealing with this issue.
She had a hysterectomy
and bilateral salpingooophorectomy
(removal of
the uterus, fallopian tubes
and ovaries) in her mid-
30s. The effects of the surgery
caused her to go into
early menopause. The average
age for menopause is
51 years old.
According to the American
Academy of Family
Physicians, up to 40 percent
of postmenopausal
women have vaginal atrophy.
With nearly 64
million post-menopausal
patients, many women are
suffering.
“During the free consultation,
Dr. [Ken] Finkelstein
answered all of my
questions and made me
feel comfortable. I decided
to get my fist treatment at
my consultation. The treatment
itself is pain-free,
requires no downtime, has
no side effects and is done
in just a few minutes in
the office. There are three
treatments done six weeks
apart,” Schreffler explained.
“I was amazed by
the results. After my first
treatment, I felt relief. I am
no longer suffering from
vaginal atrophy.”
“These symptoms greatly
impact a women’s quality
of life,” Dr. Finkelstein
said. “As someone who
has taken care of women
for over 20 years, I have
watched countless women
live with discomfort and
struggle with intimacy. Finally,
we have a solution.”
Women’s Healthcare of
Illinois understands your
health issues are personal.
Our experienced doctors
and nurse practitioners
strive to build a trusting
relationship that will last
a lifetime. We foster open
communication and will
do all we can to make you
feel comfortable. We look
forward to becoming your
healthcare provider.
Finkelstein is scheduled
to speak at the fourth annual
How ShelfGenie saved one kitchen and can save others
Fed up with unloading
cabinets and struggling
to reach cookware cornered
on shelves, Priscilla
needed a magician — or a
genie.
ShelfGenie simple custom
kitchen organization
system solved Priscilla’s
kitchen woes.
Priscilla contacted
ShelfGenie for a complimentary
in-home design
consultation, and the session
couldn’t have gone
better, she said, adding
that she was impressed
the designer listened and
understood her frustration
and needs and was ready
with suggestions specific
to her space.
ShelfGenie’s custommade
Glide-outs were
measured and built to fit
into her existing cabinets
and pantries without requiring
any remodeling.
The installation went
extremely well. “He was
clean, he was efficient
[and] he cleaned up after
the job was done,” Priscilla
said about Chris,
who installed her shelves
in less than one day.
After organizing her
newly revamped kitchen
spaces, Priscilla embraced
an entirely different and
simpler experience in her
kitchen. Everything she
needs is now right at her
fingertips and doesn’t require
her getting on her
knees or wrestling things
from the back.
“In one section where
my pots and pans were, I
used to have to take just
about the whole stack of
pans out to get to the one
that’s in the middle or that
one that’s at the bottom,
and the pans were very
heavy,” she said. “So now
I have two drawers: one is
pots, and the other is pans.
“It has just simplified
my life.”
Before the ShelfGenie
drawers were installed,
Priscilla was working
with wire shelving in her
pantries, while smaller
items, such as zip-top
baggies and plastic wrap,
were stored in less-thanideal
cardboard boxes.
Housing canned goods
in a more convenient
space is just one of many
examples of how ShelfGenie
has improved the
functionality of Priscilla’s
kitchen. It has trimmed
her time prepping and
organizing so she can get
back to what she enjoys
most: cooking and spending
time in the kitchen

with her family.
The ShelfGenie Glideouts
have given her back
a lot of space she lost to
inefficiency, so now even
more items, such as water
bottles and drinks that
were stored in the basement,
can be stored in the
kitchen where they belong.
With the amount of time
spent Priscilla spends with
her family in the kitchen,
she said the drawers are
“worth their weight in
gold.”
“I’m just thrilled with
them. I’m just thrilled,”
she said. “I feel organized.
I can see things, and I can
get at things. It’s just a
real, real good day every
day. Every day is a good
day in my kitchen. It’s not
frustrating anymore.”
ShelfGenie offers an
extensive line of custombuilt,
Glide-Out shelves
for all areas of the home.
Whether one needs Glide-
Out shelves for their
The benefits of
a reverse mortgage
Enjoy your retirement with no
worries. Are you planning to stay
in your home? Would having more
money improve your quality of
life and give you peace of mind?
A reverse mortgage is a unique
loan that enables senior homeowners
— ages 62 and older — to
convert part of the equity in their
homes into tax free income without
having to sell the home, give
up title, or take on a new monthly
mortgage payment.
To get a reverse mortgage you
do not have to move, there are no
credit or income qualifications and
no repayment required as long as
you live in the home.
Issues seniors face today: fixed
incomes, Social Security not being
enough, fear of outliving their
incomes, rising costs of healthcare
and prescriptions, cost of living
and unexpected expenses.
A reverse mortgage is the safest
HUD Mortgage in the United
States. You can never be forced
out of your home as long as you
pay your property taxes, homeowners
insurance and maintain the
property. There is asset protection
along with it being guaranteed
by U.S. Department of Housing
(HUD).
I have been in lending for more
than 40 years. My biggest concern
is helping you with deciding if this
program will fit your needs.
Grow your assets like my customer’s
100-pound pumpkin. Call
Exploring common questions
about Medicare Advantage plans
At DuPage Medical Group,
our patients often approach
us with questions regarding
Medicare coverage and which
plans might be right for them.
One such option is Medicare
Advantage, which can offer
improvements in both cost
and overall care.
What are some of the
extended benefits?
Medicare Advantage plans
offer the same coverage as
traditional Medicare, plus
additional features through
Medicare-approved private
companies. Coverage under
Medicare Advantage plans often
includes preventative care
and wellness services such as
disease prevention, chronic
care management, and even
gym memberships. Dental
and vision coverage are also
common features included in
Medicare Advantage plans.
Lastly, most Medicare Advantage
policies include Medicare
prescription drug coverage
(also known as “Part D”)
and do not require Medigap
(supplemental) coverage.
Who are good candidates?
Medicare Advantage can
be the perfect solution for
seniors looking to take more
control of their health through
expanded healthcare services.
Medicare Advantage policyholders
secure coverage for
a number of services which
would not be deemed “medically
necessary” under traditional
Medicare plans, potentially
offering them more
peace of mind when it comes
to their health. With a variety
of different plans to choose
from, you’ll be able to find a
Medicare Advantage policy
that’s best suited to your lifestyle
and healthcare needs.
How does it work?
Each Medicare Advantage
plan operates a little differently,
making the options more
flexible. However, Medicare
Advantage costs also change
on an annual basis depending
on factors like copayments,
deductibles, plan network
policies and charges for extra
Please see medicare, 27
Four signs a loved one
needs memory care
No one knows your loved one like
you do. You made a promise to them
that you will always be there to take
care of their needs. When a loved one
is experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia,
however, keeping that promise will
involve making changes.
How will you know if and when
that time has come? A large part of
your role as caregiver is recognizing
the warning signs that your loved one
has passed a point where they need
more help than you are able to provide.
Here are four key behavior changes to
watch for: Isolation (lack of motivation),
depression (loss of social activity/interaction),
forgetfulness (such as
leaving a stove burner on), increased
agitation, anger and aggression.
Experiencing any of the above firsthand
is frightening, and it’s normal
to hesitate because you want to keep
them at home longer. However, caring
at home even with help, is mentally
and physically exhausting. And they
are more vulnerable to experiencing
a serious fall or other life threatening
event. Then you may be forced into
making a snap decision.
The best time to prepare for this
challenging transition is before you
have an urgent need. Start by locating
a good memory care provider in
your community. They will have the
resources and support services you
need to help you and your loved one
become better prepared for the road
ahead.
Our pledge is to protect, engage and
love people living with memory loss.
You mean, I can now get a
Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening
at Silver Cross?
Nice!
That’s right! CT Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screening is one
of the best ways to find tumors or nodules on your lungs
which may be cancerous‒especially in smokers. It’s quick,
painless, non-invasive and now covered by Medicare and
most insurances. So if you are between 55 and 77 years old
and have smoked at least a pack a day for 30 years, are a
current smoker, or quit within the last 15 years, ask your
doctor for an order.
If further care is needed, you have easy access to a team of
multi-disciplinary lung specialists and advanced therapies
and treatments from University of Chicago Medicine
Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Midwest Institute
for Robotic Surgery, and The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab –
all at Silver Cross Hospital.
To schedule a CT Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screening,
obtain an order from your physician and call (815) 300-7076
to schedule an appointment at Silver Cross Hospital.*
Silver Cross procedure gives
active woman her life back
Christine Guzior, 65,
enjoys an active lifestyle,
working, vacationing and
spending time with her seven
children and 16 grandchildren.
But severe heartburn
and acid reflux took a
toll on her.
No matter what she ate or
drank, Guzior suffered with
acid reflux and difficulty
swallowing. She couldn’t
go out to eat with her family
without experiencing
heartburn and coughing.
She even purchased an adjustable
bed to sleep upright
because her symptoms became
so severe that she was
unable to lie flat without
feeling acid in her throat.
For years, the Lemont resident
tried acid-reducing
medications and dietary
changes, but continued to
have bothersome symptoms.
Fortunately, relief came
for Guzior one spring day
when she received the
Silver Cross Experience
newsletter in her mailbox. A
free lecture about the latest
minimally invasive surgical
options to treat heartburn,
reflux disease and Barrett’s
esophagus caught her attention.
She attended and met
Dr. Reza Gamagami, an
experienced surgeon with
the Midwest Institute for
Robotic Surgery at Silver
Cross Hospital. One of the
options he discussed was
an exciting anti-reflux treatment
called the LINX reflux
management system.
What Is LINX?
“LINX is a revolutionary
solution for reflux and
heartburn,” Gamagami said.
“The LINX device is similar
to a beaded bracelet; it’s
a flexible ring of magnetic
beads placed laparoscopically
around the base of the
esophagus to help keep the
stomach valve closed and
prevent reflux from occurring.”
The LINX implant was
designed to be a lifelong solution
to acid reflux.
Following the lecture,
Guzior made an appointment
with Gamagami for
pre-operative esophageal
testing to see if she was a
good candidate for an antireflux
procedure. She was,
so last fall, Gamagami
used the da Vinci XI Robot
System to perform a laparoscopic,
robotic-assisted
hiatal hernia repair with
placement of the LINX antireflux
device. Patients who
undergo this surgery are
allowed to eat regular food
that same day and typically
go home the same day or the
next.
Silver Cross is the only
hospital in Will County to
offer the LINX implant, and
Gamagami is the only surgeon
in Will County trained
to perform the LINX technique.
There are many benefits
to having this procedure
done laparoscopically
through small incisions.
“Christine’s heartburn
and regurgitation symptoms
have been eliminated in a
minimally invasive way, resulting
in a much quicker recovery,
minimal blood loss
and scarring, and a short
hospital stay,” Gamagami
said. “She also has been
able to stop taking all of
her anti-reflux medication,
which could have unwanted
and concerning side effects
when taken long term.”
Life after LINX
Shortly after surgery,
Guzior knew she had her
quality of life back.
“I couldn’t believe how
wonderful I felt so soon after
surgery,” she said. “In just
two hours after my procedure,
I was eating pot roast,
drinking several glasses of
water and not coughing or
having reflux! During these
past several months, I have
experienced minimal discomfort.
My recovery has
been remarkable.
“This surgery with the
LINX implant has totally
changed my life for the better.
I am a new person! I am
Most people know they
need to clean out their
dryer lint tray between
each cycle, but what lurks
behind the wall is just as
important for safety and
avoiding fire traps, as well
as fully efficient dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger,
owner of Dryer Vent
Wizard, opened his New
Lenox-based business in
2009.
Lint is the villain —
lint that has been allowed
to build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent.
It is estimated by the
U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and
the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually. These fires
account for an average of
20 deaths, 370 injuries and
more than $88 million in
property damage. “Failure
to clean the dryer vent”
was the leading factor cited
in U.S. Fire Administration
reports.
“It is something very
few people know about or
think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company
specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration
and installation. “It is
the leading cause of dryer
fires.”
Lint accumulation also
can cause dryers to stop
working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent
clogged with lint can add
as much as $18 to $24 per
month to energy costs.
“Improper venting
causes problems, as well,”
he said. “The dryer exhaust
duct and connections
should be made of rigid
metal or semi-rigid metal
and secured with metal
heat-resistant tape rather
than duct tape. I often find
plastic or foil accordiontype
material, which can
easily trap lint and is more
susceptible to kinks and
crushing.”
Warning signs include:
• Clothes are taking more
than one cycle to dry, especially
jeans and towels.
• No lint is visible on lint
screen.
• Dryer repeatedly stops
during a cycle.
• Clothes have moldy
smell after dry cycle.
• Clothes are very hot after
a dry cycle.
• The top of your dryer is
hot to the touch while
running.
• There’s excess lint left on
your clothing.
“This has been a consumer
education process,
but it’s hard to get the
word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t call until
they have a serious problem
with their dryer.”
He suggests people
treat clothes dryers as a
household item in need of
regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer
performance and promote
safety by cleaning the lint
screen between each use,
ensuring the connection
between the dryer and
wall is made of compliant
material and remains
unkinked, and having the
dryer exhaust duct cleaned
regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection
and cleaning at least
annually.
October is National Fire
Prevention Month and is
the perfect time to have an
inspection and cleaning of
clothes dryers and dryer
vent systems.
Another important tip:
never let your clothes dryer
run when you are out of
the house or asleep.
forever grateful to Dr. Gamagami for his remarkable
expertise and wonderful bedside manner. In addition,
I was so impressed to be able to receive such advanced
care at a community hospital like Silver Cross. I am
very passionate about sharing my story. I don’t want
others to suffer like I did for years, so I constantly pass
out Dr. Gamagami’s brochures wherever I go!”
Tired of living with heartburn?
Many people have lived with heartburn and reflux
for years before seeking medical help, using medications
including proton pump inhibitors (a class of
medication with brand names such as Prilosec and
Nexium) for years, despite cautions against long-term
use of these drugs.
“If you look at the Nexium package, it says it’s only
meant for 14 days, and if you need more you should
call your doctor,” Gamagami said. “We often see
patients who have been on these medications for 14
years.”
Proton pump inhibitors reduce acid in the stomach,
providing symptom relief, but they do not solve the
cause of reflux. Additionally, many people have hiatal
hernias which further aggravate the condition.
