Pony Express Fields May Be Named
Candlewood Fields
Continued from page 1
Being located on Candlewood
Road and behind the
Candlewood Golf Center, the
name Candlewood Fields would
make it easier to find on maps
and GPS, especially for someone
not familiar with Ipswich, she
said.
O’Connor said the name
Candlewood would also avoid
confusion with the neighboring
properties. The Greenbelt is
calling its tract the Castle Neck
River Reservation. The state
Fish and Wildlife Department is
calling its land the Castle Neck
River Wildlife Management
Area.
The large open space became
available after legendary polo
player Bob Daniels died in
March of 2016 after falling from
a horse in a polo match. The
Pony Express Farm, including
his polo fields, was put up for
sale.
The Town Meeting a year
later approved the purchase of
the schools. Sixty-four camera,
not including the ones being
installed at the new Pine Grove
School, scan high-traffic areas
such as cafeterias, main hallways
and entrance and exit doors.
“Cameras haven’t really been
needed yet, but they are in
place which does add a sense of
security,” Forget said.
The cameras, which cost
$50,000, are not actively
monitored, although they
can be viewed at any time by
office staff. The video from the
cameras, recorded onto a DVR,
is held for 30 days. They run
from an hour before to an hour
after school and are activated
by motion during non-school
hours.
“The reality is that 99.9
percent of that footage will
never be viewed, but it’s there
if we need it!” Forget wrote. “As
we look to continually improve
the safety and security of our
schools, I am confident these
cameras will improve our ability
to monitor any activity that
would provide a disruption to
learning, or a threat to the safety
of our students and staff.”
The Raptor system verifies
the visitor’s identity each time
they enter school. It maintains a
web-based log of who is in the
building. All visitors are instantly
checked to see if they are on the
sex offender registry.
30 acres of the farm, mostly
the polo fields themselves, for
use as much-needed athletic
fields. The town bought the
acreage for $2.15 million. The
Town Meeting also approved
another $227,000 for restoring
the fields, adding irrigation lines
and expanding the parking lot.
Essex County Greenbelt
bought 42 acres of the 128-acre
farm for $1.4 million and will
maintain it as open space for
passive recreation.
The state Department of Fish
and Wildlife bought a milelong
strip, in two parcels of 33
acres and 22 acres, along the
Castle Neck River at the back
of the property for $500,000 for
conservation lands.
The stables, after auctioning off
saddles and other horse-riding
equipment, were demolished in
August. The task force initially
thought the town might rent out
the stables to generate revenue,
but the building, constructed in
1985, needed too many repairs.
School Safety Measures Added
Triton is also working with
local police departments to
implement emergency situation
training. Called ALICE for
Alert, Lockdown, Inform,
Counter and Evacuate, it is
designed to thwart an active
shooter situation. The system
is a step up from the unified
protocol that the school district
implemented last year.
The ALICE training, which
involves role playing by teachers
and staff, is the respected
industry standard for school
safety.
The district is certifying its
own ALICE Certified Trainers
along with members of each
of the Newbury, Rowley, and
Salisbury police departments.
When the faculty and staff are
trained, the schools will begin
conducting drills on various
scenarios.
Forget wrote that the training
will be implemented cautiously
and slowly to prepare students
Replacing the roof alone
would cost $30,000, O’Connor
has said.
On its 30 acres, the town is
building four athletic fields,
suitable for soccer, lacrosse and
other field sports. If needed, two
more fields could be built later.
Primary users will be the
Ipswich youth athletic programs,
but adult leagues from Frisbee
to soccer may also use the fields,
O’Connor said.
Scheduling will be handled
by the Parks and Cemeteries
Department.
Residents of Ipswich “have
been very patient,” O’Connor
said. The fields look like “you
could just put out the nets and
start playing.”
It took time for the town to
secure the permits from town
boards and work with wetland
specialists, she said.
The wait will be worth it,
O’Connor believes. “It will
be something the town will be
proud of.”
