CHINCH BUGS or BROWN PATCH?
As the weather starts to cool in October, brown patch inevitably starts to show
its ugly face in the form of yellow circles on our lawns. Many homeowners have
a hard time telling whether they have brown patch or if there is some sort of
insect feasting on their lawn areas.
To clarify:
Brownpatch is a fungus and usually appears in the same areas repeatedly,
thriving when temperatures drop overnight below 70 degrees for several nights,
even if previous outbreaks were thought to have been resolved. A yellow/grey
circle up to 20” in diameter will appear and then slowly close in on the inner
turf, changing the color of the grass as it moves inward.
Scott’s Lawn Fungus Control is very effective in controlling an outbreak of
Brownpatch. Products containing Chlorothanolwork well - try Daconil Docket DF,
it is a granular product and very effective. Ortho Daconil is a faster-acting liquid
productmany homeowners use. Additionally, as the weather begins to cool, mow
your turf shorter to prevent moisture build-up, adjust your irrigation cycle to fewer
days or shorter cycle times and avoid watering at night. Fungus loves moisture.
Chinch Bugs can be very devastating to St. Augustine or Fescue lawns. Their
damage can appear similar to brown patch at first but grows out beyond circles
or rings. Chinch bugs are the larvae of Blissus leucopterus, a small winged beetle.
To check for the presence of chinch bugs:
Take a coffee can or similar container and remove the top and bottom of the can,
creating a hollow cylinder. Then embed the can in an affected area and fill with
water. If chinch bugs are present they will rise to the top of the water within the can.
Prevent damage from occurring! The most effective pesticide to apply is a
liquid spray containing permethrin, cypermethrin or deltamethrin. This must
be applied 3 separate times within a 21 day period - the egg cycle the chinch
bugs leave behind must be killed, otherwise they will return. A liquid product
will permeate all areas better and more effectively than a granular product,
ensuring the infestation is defeated.
If a granular treatment is utilized as well as a liquid application, “Triazicide”
works very well if applied according to labeled directions.
GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in
the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus.
Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose.
• Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to
stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate
on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get
before summer, the better.
• October 15 th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies.
• Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown
patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather.
Control with Daconil.
• If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth
stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of
Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead,
weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and
shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees.
• Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and
transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better.
• Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations.
• Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the
post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications
are usually needed, even if done this early.
• For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.
STREET LIGHTS
The streetlights are owned and operated by Center Point. If
the light is on all day, flickering, not coming on at all, leaning
or got hit by a car:
Please report it to 713-207-2222 or online at
www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.
It will normally take 3 to 5 business days to repair or
2 to 3 weeks if the pole needs to be replaced.
SECURITY NOTE
Make it difficult for would-be thieves
We’ve seen the reports on local news shows: “Brazen thieves
make off with contents of cars parked in residential driveways.”
And we’ve heard neighbors tell of how “somebody broke into
my car last night.”
When all the facts of these stories are revealed, many times we
learn that the parked cars were not locked. Granted, some unconscionable
person(s) committed an illegal act (trespass, theft),
but the simple act of keeping car doors locked while a vehicle
is parked in your driveway can make your car less attractive to
would-be thieves.
In addition, by removing purses, briefcases, cell phones, shopping
bags and other valuables from parked vehicles - whether in your
own driveway or a commercial parking lot - you’ll likely remove
temptation for a crime opportunity.
These are small steps that only take a few seconds and demonstrate
how being mindful of personal and home security can
make a big difference.
TEXAS TRANSPORTATION CODE - JUNKED VEHICLES
§ 683.071. DEFINITION. In this subchapter, “junked[0]
vehicle[0]” means a vehicle[0] that is self-propelled and:
(1) does not have lawfully attached to it:
(A) an unexpired license plate or
(B) a valid motor vehicle[0] inspection certificate and
(2) is:
(A) wrecked, dismantled or partially dismantled or discarded or
(B) inoperable and has remained inoperable for more than:
(i) 72 consecutive hours, if the vehicle[0] is on public property or
(ii) 30 consecutive days, if the vehicle[0] is on private property.
Acts 1995, 74 th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995. Amended by
Acts 1999, 76 th Leg., ch. 746, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1999; Acts 2001, 77 th
Leg., ch. 798, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 2001.
Translation: Do not leave junk cars on your property. The fines are
substantial. If your car does not operate and you want to keep
it, put the vehicle in your garage. If your car is not inspected and
not registered, put it in the garage. A word to the wise should be
sufficient.
SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Please remember to be respectful of
your neighbors’ yards and the community
grounds. When you take your pet for
a walk, come prepared with a scooper
and a recycled grocery bag or anything
else. If your pet poops during your walk,
please scoop and trash. It may not be the
most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your
fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.
PET ID TAGS
Folks - as soon as the vet gives your young pets their Rabies shot remember to
get their ID tags. The Rabies tag lists the name, phone number and address of the
vet. So! All you need to do is put the Rabies tag onto the pet’s collar and leave it
there all the time. That way, if the pet gets loose, anyone finding him or her can
look at the tag to see the vet’s phone number and call to report the lost animal.
Better yet, add another tag to your pet’s collar that lists the dog or cat’s name and
your own phone number or address. You can get these from any pet store. When
a pet has these but goes astray, anyone finding it can call you and you can go
get him or her right away.
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who
is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals
and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to
avoid the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint
while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of
a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat,
nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet
in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable
of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does
not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play,
it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents
by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who
may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be
held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly
restrained please contact:
STOP THAT BARKING
Many dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief
in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. But, nothing is
as annoying as incessant barking - even for dog lovers. If your dog is a
yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas
to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!
• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem!
Help is as close as the Yellow Pages. Training not only helps your dog,
you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight
Community Newsletter | October 2018
into why your dog barks so much or what it is trying to communicate.
• Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking
collar and costs about the same. Available on the web and
in pet stores.
• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors
or confining it to a crate can cut down on the disturbance to neighbors.
• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street
noise or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship -
a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting
service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility
once or twice a week.
Keep in mind that dogs who bark from loneliness or boredom, may not
do it when you are home. Meanwhile, your neighbors may be getting
serenaded while you are away.
MAILBOX TAMPERING
When a mailbox is put into use for the purposes of sending and receiving
mail, it becomes federal property.
Mailbox tampering is considered any act that interferes with another
person’s letter box or other receptacle. This can include:
• destruction of the mailbox itself
• theft of mailbox contents
• the placement of items in a mail receptacle by persons
other than postal employees
• any action intended to obstruct or damage mail or mailbox property
In short, anyone, other than mail recipients and postal employees,
should NOT touch a mailbox or its contents.
HARRIS COUNTY ALARM DETAIL
In order to increase compliance and spread awareness, our office is requesting
your assistance in informing residents in your community through
your HOA newsletter or your scheduled HOA meetings of the need to obtain
a permit for operating an alarm system, residential or business, within
unincorporated Harris County. Many residents and businesses are unaware
of the requirement to obtain an alarm permit once an alarm system has
been installed and activated by the alarm company. Alarm systems are
established and defined in the Local Government Code 233 (subchapter
D), as well as the authority to regulate, adopt rules and impose penalties
for unpermitted locations. Obtaining the required permit will avoid the
issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees. The fee for current
permit issuance is $35 with a yearly renewal fee of $10. All permit fees are
waived for senior citizens 65 years or older. Under current guidelines, a
permitted location is allowed five (5) free false alarms annually. Any subsequent
false alarms during your permitted year are subject to a $75 fine
that is billed to the permit holder’s address. If a site has an active alarm
system, yet does not have a permit to operate such alarm, a false alarm
may result in a Class C citation, which could range up to $500.
Should you require a copy of the permit application form or would like
to review the regulations regarding permit requirements, you maydo so
by visiting the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at www. hcso.hctx./
net. The application can be printed from the website, then completed
and mailed to our office with the applicable fees. We are currently in
the planning stages of making the application and payment process
available on-line for the convenience to the public. Should you have
any questions, please contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Alarm
Detail at 713-755-4600 M-F, 8 AM - 5 PM.
WATCH FOR KIDS WHILE DRIVING
The roads are once again crawling with school busses, teenage drivers
and kids in the crosswalk, so please slow down when going through the
neighborhood. Now that kids will be back on their way to school, it’s time
to double and triple check those intersections, just when you think it’s
all systems go, a late for school student will magically appear out of nowhere
and dart across the street when you least anticipate it. Thank you!
BE AWARE OF THEFT POTENTIAL
Many of us have a habit of leaving the garage door open when we are
working or relaxing in the backyard. Unfortunately, people in virtually
every neighborhood lose property to opportunistic thieves this way
every year. Bicycles and power tools are just a few of the commonly
stolen things and keep in mind that it only takes a matter of seconds
for something of significant value to “walk away.” Please keep those
doors down when you are not in eyesight of the garage.
RAD CLASSES
The Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 5 is now offering a class on
Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). RAD is one of the best women’s self-defense
courses available. It’s a program based on realistic self-defense tactics
and techniques. It is a comprehensive self-defense course for women
that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance,
while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defensive training. If you’re
interested in more information and signing up, go to this link:
https://constablepct5.com/index.php/rad
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and
do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person
is anyone you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any
vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your
street that you don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are
at home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police
catch the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge
that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone
that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you
to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check
them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age,
they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is
there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later).
Then have them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never
open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything
from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into
your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain
sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
400-PLUS VOLUNTEER BUS BUDDIES
ASSIST YOUNG CFISD BUS RIDERS
In assisting the new bus riders and drivers and
CFISD, 430 community volunteers assisted in
the 12 th annual CFISD Bus Buddies program
during the first week of classes. It’s the second
consecutive year in which the total has topped
400 volunteers, with many serving as a Bus
Buddy for more than one day.
Bus Buddies rode CFISD school buses from
2:45 PM to 5 PM for the first two days of school,
August 27 th -28 th , to ensure young students
were safely transported to their proper dropoff
points and locations.
“Our Bus Buddies program was another
success this year, but it would not have been
possible without the support of our business
partners, administration and community
members,” said Bill Powell, assistant superintendent
of support services. “I am also
grateful to our communication and community
engagement departments for promoting
and scheduling the program to ensure our
students’ safety over the first two days of
school. Thank you to everyone for making it
a great success.” In addition to community
volunteers, 102 businesses and organizations
participated in the program.
CFISD HIGH SCHOOLS RECOGNIZED
IN U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT
RANKINGS
Cypress Woods and Cypress Ranch high schools
ranked among the top 1,700 U.S. high schools in
the country, while Langham Creek and Cypress
Ridge high schools gave Cypress-Fairbanks ISD
four schools among the top 2,700 nationally,
according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual
list of America’s Best High Schools.
In achieving a high level of college readiness,
Cypress Woods, Cypress Ranch, Langham
Creek and Cypress Ridge were awarded silver
medals, while Cypress Springs, Jersey Village
and Cypress Lakes high schools were bronze
medal winners.
The 2018 list evaluates schools that have proven
the most effective in producing college-ready
graduates, based on a four-step process:
Determining whether a school’s students were
performing better than statistically expected
for students in that state; Assessing whether
their historically underserved students (African
American, Hispanic and low-income)
performed at or better than the state average
for historically underserved students; Meeting
or surpassing a benchmark for a school’s graduation
rate (80 percent or greater) and Assessing
college-readiness performance using Advanced
Placement and International Baccalaureate
test data as the benchmark for success.
The fourth step measured which schools produced
the best college-level achievement for the
highest percentages of their students, which was
completed by computing a College Readiness
Index. The maximum CRI value is 100. To be
ranked nationally, a high school had to pass the
first three steps and have a CRI value at or above
21.51 (the midpoint of all CRI values).
Of the 5,948 highest-scoring schools, the
top 500 were awarded gold medals. Schools
ranked No. 501 to No. 2,711 were awarded silver
medals, while the remaining 3,237 ranked
schools were awarded bronze medals.
Cypress Woods was ranked at 1,297 in the
nation and 149 in Texas with a 97-percent
graduation rate and 40.2 CRI value.
Cypress Ranch was ranked 1,678 in the nation
and 173 in Texas with a 98-percent graduation
rate and 34.3 CRI value.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS
COVENANT ACADEMY NEWS
PATRIOTS’ WEEK is an uplifting,
energizing way to
build community and grow
disciples during this first
full week of school. During
Patriots’ Week, our students
rotated through four
settings each day. In planting
our gardens, students
cultivated goodness and
beauty and learned about
caring for the earth that
God has given to us. In the
House of Cards, students
learned the skill of passing
time together without consuming
technology while
strengthening number
sense. Our team building
games of Sock Dodge and
Steal the Bacon showed
them that they can learn to win well, lose well and take risks in group
settings. Lastly, our seniors taught students about the Code of Conduct
and how Christ’s work on our behalf helps us to move toward His likeness.
On August 25 th our Cross Country Team took 3 rd place in the Boys JV Division
at The Woodlands Christian Cross Country Meet. Our long distance
runners have been training all summer to build endurance. We are proud
of all the hard work of our Covenant athletes! Go Patriots!
Another House Induction Day is in the books! On August 24 th , all of
our new students were inducted into their house “families” and were
received with great joy. At Covenant, everyone belongs to someone.
Our four houses organize our school community around the ideals that
define our school: wisdom and virtue. These houses (or teams) provide
students with abundant leadership options and encourage excellence
through friendly competition. Each of our houses has chosen a virtue
and a motto that they will actively seek to define them. These virtues,
wisdom, courage, perseverance and love are worthy pursuits for all as
we seek to be lifelong learners in community with one another.
Halloween Safety Tips
Walk Safely: Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and
crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep
looking as you cross. Put electronic devices down and keep heads
up and walk, don’t run, across the street. Teach children to make eye
contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. Always walk on
sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as
far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with
the fewest street crossings. Watch for cars that are turning or backing
up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between
parked cars.
Trick or Treat with an Adult: Children under the age of 12 should
not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature
enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar
areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe: Decorate costumes and bags
with reflective tape or stickers and if possible, choose light colors.
Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks,
which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or
flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. When selecting a
costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
Drive Extra Safely on Halloween: Slow down and be especially alert
in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and
may move in unpredictable ways. Take extra time to look for kids at
intersections, on medians and on curbs. Enter and exit driveways
and alleys slowly and carefully. Eliminate any distractions inside your
car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Drive
slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on
earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. Popular trickor-treating
hours are 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM so be especially alert for kids
during those hours.
OCTOBER IS
BREAST CANCER
AWARENESS MONTH
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is
dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early
detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM
started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members.
Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public
service organizations, professional associations and government agencies
that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations
of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early
detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives.
The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women
age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year
and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.
The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day,
first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout
the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography
appointment.
To find a facility in your area, please call:
American Cancer Society 800-227-2345
National Cancer Institute 800-4-CANCER
Or visit nbcam.org or www.cancer.org for more information.
3 STEPS TO EARLY DETECTION
One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
However, with early detection and treatment, you can greatly
improve your chance of survival.
Early detection means finding the cancer before it spreads to other
parts of the body. Although breast cancer cannot be completely
prevented, early detection provides the greatest possibility of
successful treatment. By following these three steps, you will help
increase your chance of detecting cancer early.
Changes to look for include:
• A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
• Dimpling or puckering in the skin of the breast
• A nipple turned inward into the breast
• Discharge (fluid) from the nipple
• Scaly, red or swollen skin on the breast, nipple or areola (the dark
area of skin at the center of the breast)
You should see your health care provider about any of these
symptoms. Often these symptoms are not due to cancer, but if
you notice any changes in your body, tell your health care provider
immediately so that the problems can be diagnosed and treated.
2. WELL-WOMAN EXAM
It is recommended that women visit their family physician or gynecologist
each year for an annual Well-Woman Exam. In addition
to a routine pelvic exam and pap smear, the doctor may perform
a brief breast exam to check for abnormalities. The Well-Woman
Exam is a great opportunity for you to discuss with your health care
provider any questions or concerns you have regarding your breast
health. For example, your doctor may help you to determine the
most appropriate frequency for your early detection steps.
3. MAMMOGRAM
In its early stages, breast cancer doesn’t usually cause symptoms.
NBCF recommends that women ages 40 and older get a mammogram
every year. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It is a safe
way to detect cancerous tumors and other abnormal breast conditions
and women who have screening mammograms have a lower
chance of dying from breast cancer than women who do not have
screening mammograms. Mammograms can detect cancer or other
problems before a lump becomes large enough to be detectable
to the touch. They provide an effective way to find breast cancer
in its early stages when treatment is usually the most successful.
Mammograms are considered safe, quick and relatively painless.
1. BREAST SELF-AWARENESS
Breast self-awareness can help you become familiar with how your
breasts normally look and feel. Knowing this will help you identify
any changes in your breasts that should be reported to your health
care professional promptly. If you find a lump, schedule an appointment
with your doctor, but don’t panic - 8 out of 10 lumps are not
cancerous.
100+WOMEN WHO CARE, CY-FAIR
SELECTED LOCAL NON-PROFIT
SHIELD BEARER AS THE
QUARTERLY CHARITY RECIPIENT
Shield Bearer is a local non-profit organization that
has provided professional counseling services and
prevention programs for local families in the Cy-Fair
area for over 13 years. Now with six locations in the
NW Houston area, Shield Bearer sees thousands of
families each year including those experiencing the
trauma of domestic violence, human trafficking,
crime, war, Hurricane Harvey and more. Funds will be
utilized to continue counseling services and programs
for clients that need assistance on a sliding scale.
“100+Women Who Care, Cy-Fair’s dedication to the
community is inspiring. Their members seek out
worthy organizations and collectively, make a big
impact,” stated Shield Bearer Executive Director Roy
Wooten. “We were honored to be nominated and
overjoyed to be selected as the winner. We are so thankful for their support of local families.”
100+Women Who Care, Cy-Fair is one chapter of over 300 chapters worldwide. Chapters are started by people who want to make a
difference in their local communities. Chapter Leader Jodi Johnston-McNiven started the Cy-Fair chapter just two years ago. Members
gather four times a year and make a difference in the community through a $100 quarterly donation to a locally nominated charity.
“Members nominate the charities, then vote on the charities and the money then goes directly to the winner. When we pool our money
together in this way, we can have a bigger influence,” stated Ms. Johnston-McNiven. “100+Women Who Care, Cy-Fair is defined by the
power of collective giving, so we are seeking additional members that want to be the change they wish to see in the community. We are
powerful alone, but even more powerful together.”
“I’m In PAIN”
Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor
of chiropractic can help my problem?”
We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination,
including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation
and examination, including x-rays, if necessary,
(procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00.
We will make this special program available through October.
The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation
and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
How to Carve
A Pumpkin
When it comes to pumpkin carving, the idea is to have fun. We’ve
got tips on carving the best pumpkin, as well as how to pick a good
pumpkin for carving!
HOW TO PICK A GOOD PUMPKIN FOR CARVING
Look for one that is a little misshapen. Inspect it for soft spots (especially
the end opposite the stem). Reject a pumpkin that has soft spots, they
will cause it to deteriorate quickly. Remember, your pumpkin doesn’t
have to sit on its base, in fact, that’s often its weakest spot.
Let the pumpkin guide the shape of the face: An elongated pumpkin
should have an elongated face. A fat and happy pumpkin should have
a fat and happy face.
HOLLOW OR WHOLE?
There are two reasons for hollowing: (1) If the inside is going to be
exposed (through the mouth, etc.), it looks better if it is hollowed
neatly. (2) If you plan to light the pumpkin from the inside, it must be
hollow. You can hollow it out from a hole in the back instead of the top,
so that the look of the face isn’t affected. If you’re illuminating with a
candle, you need to hollow from the top to allow the heat and smoke
to escape.
THE TOOLS
Use a water-based marker to outline the face that you want to carve.
First, draw a line down the center to establish symmetry. Then sketch
the nose, the approximate center of the face. Once you’re satisfied with
the details, trace over the lines using a permanent marker. For carving,
basic kitchen implements, such as a paring knife or a steak knife with
a standard - not serrated - blade that’s not going to bend, work well.
You can also use a standard jigsaw blade. Otherwise, improvise: Use a
melon-ball cutter to make circles, for example.
MAKE A FACE
To achieve a three-dimensional appearance, carve the entire pumpkin.
Exaggerate the features. (If you aren’t sure what teeth really look like or
how the gum line works, smile and look in the mirror.) If the pumpkin is
frowning, carve wrinkles under the mouth. To add character, carve a lot
of “crow’s feet” lines around the eyes. Consider using the stem as the
nose and inserts such as radishes for the eyes or cut eyeballs from the
back of the pumpkin and hold them in place with toothpicks.
CARVE WITH CARE
Use two hands at all times: one to control the blade and the other to
control the pressure with which you cut (and thus the depth). Take care
not to jab the blade into the pumpkin; you don’t want to cut all the
way through the rind - except to determine its depth. The thickness of
the rind will vary, not only from pumpkin to pumpkin, but also within
one pumpkin. To determine your pumpkin’s average depth, cut a
core sample where you want an eye or a nostril to be. Keep that piece
nearby as a reminder of how deep you can safely cut.
ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS
Pumpkins, which are actually a fruit, not a vegetable, are 90 percent
water, so after carving they usually last only three days to a week. A
jack-o’-lantern with a surface carving will last longer than one that
is cut all the way through. Putting a candle or other light inside will
shorten its life span, as the heat that results can “cook” the pumpkin
and reduce its longevity to a matter of hours. For a bright, shiny finish,
spray Armor All on the pumpkin and rub it in. Paint will not preserve a
pumpkin. However, if you decide to paint your pumpkin for decoration,
use a water-based latex paint and wait at least an hour after carving
so that the cuts you have made in the pumpkin have a chance to dry.
