DAYLIGHT SAVING time actually 

starts this Sunday not last 

Sunday as I suggested last week. 

The go-ahead for daylight saving 

time in NSW was “delayed” a 

week this year because of a relatively 

rare quirk in the calendar 

according to Attorney General 

and “Minister for Time” Mark 

Speakman who said most years 

the clocks go forward on the 

Sunday of the long weekend but 

every seven years on average 

daylight saving starts a week 

later. Hence this Sunday.

appointed CEO of Macquarie 

Community College 

in February 2015. 

At her first AGM in May 

that year College members 

were to witness unprecedented 

affluence with 

the flashy Annual Report 

adorned with three A4 

Studio photos of herself, 

Chairman Sue Murray and 

past CEO June Heinrich. 

As a portent of things to 

come, that same evening 

three of her friends were 

introduced, all appointed 

to the Board just a few 

days before the AGM. 

These business “experts” 

we were assured, would lift 

the College’s commercial 

standing to new highs. 

Instead, pretending they 

were all directors of some 

multinational business, 

these dreamers encouraged 

reckless spending 

against the strongest advice 

of those experienced

Macquarie Community College 

directors in a minority. 

At the AGM in 2016 the 

college declared a loss of 

over $567,000 the biggest 

loss in the College’s history, 

denying it any hope of 

proposing credible tenders 

for years to come. 

Peter Glasheen, the most 

vocal of the experts assured 

members that the 

biggest loss in the college’s 

history was “cash 

positive”. 

Predictably in 2016 Macquarie 

Community College 

failed to retain the $25 million 

AMEP tender it had 

proudly held for 19 years 

and the SEE tender for 

$1.8 million which it had 

held for 3 years. 

Also, the Lifestyle and 

Leisure program for which 

the college was famous 

was allowed to shrink to 

unimaginable lows. 

It should be noted that 

the College, which over fifteen 

years to 2009 donated 

over $1.5 million to charities 

and local sponsorships 

and spent less than 

Theresa Collignon in the lavish 2005 Annual Report.

to have the CFO then advise 

that by March 2018 

the college was in deficit 

$250,000 with an expected 

loss for the 2018 of 

$400,000 - an appalling six 

significant losses in seven 

years! 

Recently the College 

relinquished its lease on 

Brush Farm House, confirming 

that the ‘Reception 

Business’ started with 

great fanfare several years 

ago was a flop and had to 

close. 

The Carlingford Campus 

comprising two 1880’s 

buildings restored and 

maintained for years with 

pride is now wilfully neglected 

and well on the 

way to the derelict state it 

was over 20 years ago. 

Our big spending CEO 

now boasts desperate 

cost cutting measures. 

Members were advised 

recently of “more than 

$1million reduction in overheads”. 

Hardly impressive 

Theresa, when the gross 

turnover over the past two 

years has gone down over 

$5million! 

It would seem the obvious 

way to cut costs and 

restore credibility to the 

College would be to remove 

the CEO and her 

friends on the Board who 

created this appalling state 

of affairs and find some 

suitable people with commercial 

acumen and a passion 

for Adult Education to 

replace them.

Fair go for all or 

offensive racism? 

Dear Sir, 

Whatever “gotcha” 

point Tony Ikonomou 

thinks he’s scored in reference 

to the number of 

Chinese people living in 

Vancouver, he can have 

it. 

My issue isn’t with him, 

or a Canadian city thousands 

of km away. 

It’s why this local newspaper, 

one which services 

a proudly ethnically diverse 

community in an 

exciting part of Sydney, 

devotes so much of its 

letters column to racebaiting. 

When I raised this a few 

weeks ago, the editor 

explained it’s a matter of 

“free speech” and a “fair 

go for all.” 

Excellent sentiments, I 

don’t doubt they’re sincere, 

I wholeheartedly 

agree, and congratulate 

TWT for its operatingprinciples. 

But how about a fair go 

for those who find racism 

offensive? Do we really 

need to read about 

one man’s “yellow peril” 

fears every second week 

in TWT? 

In other words, give it a 

rest! 

Recognising that some 

of its readers could get 

obsessive and had too 

much time on their hands 

(guilty, m’Lord), theSydney 

Morning Heraldused 

to have a policy of not 

publishing letters from 

the same person on the 

same topic for a specified 

period. 

With one eye on its revenue 

base, it also exercised 

editorial discretion, 

or at least that was the 

case back when I was involved 

in the business of 

journalism. 

And it is a business. 

I suspect that if the editor 

of TWT asked his advertising 

sales staff how 

they felt about being associated 

with a publication 

that was actively 

spreading race hate, directly 

under its masthead, 

week after week, he may 

come to a different view 

about that “fair go for all.”

Sharing childhood memories and 

family stories of precious dolls 

WE STARTED VSandO 

(Very Special and Original) 

Doll Rescue as an 

idea to bring precious 

things from the past into 

the present, and give 

them a life into the future. 

Our first project was 

to rewrite vintage knitting 

patterns, which we 

thought were too beautiful 

to be allowed to fade 

into history. 

The patterns also represented 

two of the key 

pillars of our philosophy – 

the making of hand-crafted 

items and the use of 

traditional skills that were 

handed down through 

generations. 

At our home in Hunters 

Hill we began with ‘popup 

shops’ in the yard and 

in the lounge room. 

At our first sale we 

dressed some secondhand 

dolls in hand-knitted 

clothes to showcase what 

could be done with knitting. 

The dolls were very 

popular so we dressed 

some more. 

We wondered if it would 

be possible to rescue 

dolls, do them up and 

sell them on so that they 

could have another life. 

If people were interested 

in such a thing then we 

could express the third 

pillar of our philosophy – 

recycling, reclaiming and 

reusing discarded items.

WE WERE really encouraged 

when we had 

a stall at the first Hunters 

Hill Street Feast. 

To The POINT

The response to our 

dolls was so positive and 

overwhelming and we 

enjoyed doing them so 

much, that rescuing dolls 

has become our biggest 

project. 

Our dolls are mostly rescued 

from charity shops. 

We buy the ones that 

no-one else will buy because 

they are in such 

poor condition and bring 

home the scruffy, the 

dirty, the tangled and the 

broken. 

We clean them, fix them 

and dress them so that 

they are ready to be reloved. 

Even the unfixable are 

used with recycled bits 

and pieces and made into 

new things.

IN THE course of our 

doll rescuing we have 

learned many new skills, 

to add to those that had 

been passed down to us. 

At our stalls we are often 

asked if we repair 

dolls. 

So now we do. Our doll 

rescuing project has been 

extended again. 

We love this work because 

we can use our 

skills creatively to give 

things another life that 

would otherwise be 

thrown away and love the 

challenge of solving new 

problems and generating 

new ideas. But most of 

all we love the joy that we 

share with the people we 

meet. 

Whenever we have a 

stall we receive smiles 

and joyful responses. 

People tell us tales of 

their own dolls. 

They share their childhood 

memories and family 

stories, as well as their 

hopes for the future of 

their precious dolls. 

People tell us about 

their own creative skills 

and sometimes share 

things with us that they 

can no longer use. 

Rescuing and recycling 

is also highly valued by 

our customers. 

We become a community 

and strangers become 

friends. 

There are just the two of 

us at VSandO. 

We’re a mother and 

daughter team - Yvonne 

and Cheryl. We are inspired 

by the past to continue 

to make beautiful 

things for the future.

North Ryde’s Abby Hill one of four 

girls representing Australia in China 

A FINALIST in last year’s TWT Granny Smith Festival Queen Quest is representing 

Australia at an international youth conference in China. 

Nineteen year old Abby Hill 

is in China on an Intern Scholarship 

and is one of 30 university 

students from around 

the world, participating in the 

2018 Nanjing International 

Youth Exchange Program. 

Her mum Julie said she is 

proud Abby is one of only 

four Australians selected to 

represent their country. 

“Abby feels especially honoured 

as a young female Australian 

to have been asked to 

MC the closing ceremony, 

presenting her speech in 

Mandarin,” Julie said. 

“The ceremony will be attended 

by the Mayor of Nanjing 

and Foreign Affairs Minister 

and televised in China that 

has a population of 1.5 billion 

people.” 

Abby is a second year student 

studying Agricultural 

Science and Economics at 

Sydney University. 

She has spent her Internship 

working at Bunge which 

is a major International Agricultural 

food company in 

Nanjing. 

“Abby is a great role model 

for other young girls who are 

interested in studying STEM 

related courses,” Julie said. 

“ She’s passionate about 

empowering girls to embrace 

every opportunity to develop 

their leadership skills, for future 

careers.

CALD Seniors learning 

about Elder Abuse and DV

Ryde Police Area Command recognises there is a lack 

of understanding of the laws and the processes in relation 

to domestic violence (DV) against elderly persons from the 

CALD community. Hence, on Tuesday September 25 the 

Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club (ECSCC) was invited 

to participate in a community education program on 

elder abuse and DV at the Burwood Local Court. 

This event was supported by the Ryde City Council and 

the Northern Centre. It is aimed at raising awareness of the 

processes in reporting incidents to the police, the Local 

Court and support services such as Legal Aid, Victim Support 

Services, DV Court Advocacy Services etc.

Granny Smith Festival just around the corner 

Preparations are really ramping up for this year’s Granny Smith 

Festival which will be held in Eastwood on Saturday 20 October. 

Last week, apple trees were donated to five local schools to 

mark the 150th anniversary of the Granny Smith apple. 

In addition, visits were also made to other schools as part 

of the annual Granny Smith Schools Program. The program 

allows young students to take part in fun games such as 

apple bobbing as well as learn about the history of 

Granny Smith and her famous creation. 

These school visits serve an important 

role to involve kids in the celebrations 

of the Festival and teach them about an 

important piece of community history. 

I really hope everyone in the community 

can get to Eastwood on 20 October for 

the Granny Smith Festival and enjoy 

the fantastic entertainment that will 

be featured throughout the day. More

Preserving Ryde’s heritage 

Council has once again taken measures 

to save Ryde’s important heritage by 

unanimously supporting my Mayoral 

Minute to place an interim heritage order 

on a house in Denistone, which was under 

threat of demolition. 

The beautiful house in Denistone is a 

pristine example of the fantastic homes 

we have in the City of Ryde, and as a 

Council we will do all we can to ensure it 

remains in its current form for generations 

to come. This is the third interim heritage 

order Council has placed on a house since 

I became Mayor and we will continue to 

take such action during my tenure to stop 

bulldozers from destroying Ryde’s history. 

I would like to say a big thank you to the 

long-standing residents who addressed 

Council about this issue and have put in 

a lot of effort in a short amount of time to 

save the Denistone house.

blindness worldwide are 

uncorrected refractive 

error (need for glasses), 

cataracts, glaucoma 

and macular degeneration.

its existence to the energy

Music Clubs then 

operating in a number

At a meeting held on

Memorial Hall, Eastwood, 

88 people signed 

applications to join the 

“Ryde Eastwood District 

Music Club” which 

would affiliate with the 

Federated Music Clubs

The Clubs purpose 

was then stated to be 

“to provide music of 

a high standard for 

the entertainment and 

musical education of 

members and friends, 

in an atmosphere of

have performed for the 

Club over the past 75

Invictus Games experience for Ryde students 

STUDENTS from the Ryde area will attend the upcoming Invictus 

Games in Sydney, enjoying the benefits of workshops on adaptive 

sports and inspirational insights from competitors.

Clr Maggio’s Tuesday 

night motion. 

“There are around 

15,000 dog owners in 

Ryde but if we walk 

them on the street it is 

not as good as if you 

run them in a park,” 

local dog owner Guy 

Williamson said. 

“Yet we’ve had council 

rangers throwing 

us out of the park and 

threatening us with 

fines. 

“All the money 

you (councillors) are 

spending on parks 

just can’t be for sporting 

people.” 

Kylee Blackwell 

agreed. 

“Monash Park is 

the ideal choice for 

an off leash area and 

at Monash Park we 

even clean up the litter 

left by the sporting 

teams.” 

For Jim Dolan, an 

off leash Monash Park 

offers a better opportunity 

to socialise. 

“I’ve got dogs and 

I’ve met at least 100 

dogs and their owners 

here, we’ve even had 

Christmas get togethers,” 

he said. 

“So this is a fantastic 

opportunity to 

socialise our dogs, 

although clearly, the 

dogs go when soccer 

is being played at the 

park.” 

The Strategy will 

also investigate the 

feasibility of council 

operated “doggie litter 

bag” vending machines, 

although the 

bags will need to be 

made from corn starch 

or another biodegradable 

material to comply 

with the Council’s 

recent ban on single 

use plastics in council 

parks and at council 

events.

New clearways and parking changes on way for Lyons Road 

MOTORISTS who travel along Lyons Road between Five Dock 

and Drummoyne will soon enjoy more reliable journeys with new 

clearways and parking changes being introduced this month. 

A Roads and Maritime 

Services spokesperson 

said the changes will operate 

from Monday October 

29 to improve traffic 

for motorists on this key 

road corridor. 

“Roads and Maritime 

has been working with the 

community, businesses 

and the City of Canada 

Bay Council since November 

last year to find the 

right balance along Lyons 

Road,” the spokesperson 

said. 

“Roads and Maritime has 

listened to the feedback 

received and additional 

investigations have been 

carried out at the request 

of Council, the community 

and local businesses 

to ensure all options have 

been considered.” 

The spokesperson said 

the new clearways will 

operate in both directions 

from 6am to 10am 

and from 3pm to 7pm 

on weekdays, with timed 

‘No Stopping’ restrictions 

operating at the intersections 

between Cometrowe 

Street and Lithgow Street 

from 10am to 3pm on 

weekdays and 9am to 

6pm on weekends and 

public holidays. 

“Timed ‘No Stopping’ 

restrictions will be in place 

to allow vehicles to use 

the kerbside lane and 

safely pass vehicles waiting 

on Lyons Road to turn 

right,” the spokesperson 

said. 

“With funding from 

Roads and Maritime, City 

of Canada Bay Council 

is also reconfiguring onstreet 

parking in Janet 

Street to provide additional 

parking for business 

customers. 

“Timed parking will 

also be provided on local 

roads, with new timed 

parking spaces to also be 

provided for business customers 

on Gears Avenue, 

Byrne Avenue, Barney 

Street and Brent Street. 

“These timed parking 

spaces will provide alternative 

business customer 

parking during the new 

clearway hours and ‘No 

Stopping’ times. 

“In addition, ‘No Parking’ 

restrictions will also 

be introduced on Lyons 

Road between Hampden 

Road and Byrne Avenue

Granny Smith bites into 

apples, health and history 

EASTWOOD’s famous Granny Smith was at Denistone East Public School last Thursday 

to give away Granny Smith apples and promote the upcoming, local Granny Smith Festival. 

Granny Smith was joined 

by City of Ryde Mayor Jerome 

Laxale and a jolly green 

giant Granny Smith apple 

and helped students plant 

apple trees in the school 

garden. 

The City of Ryde has now 

donated 10 Granny Smith 

trees to local schools to 

celebrate the 150th anniversary 

celebrations of the first 

crop of Granny Smith Apples 

planted in an Eastwood 

orchid by Maria Ann Smith, 

who had emigrated from 

Beckley, East Sussex in 1839 

with her husband Thomas. 

To celebrate the anniversary, 

more than 90,000 people 

are expected to descend 

on Eastwood to take part in 

the Festival, which is one of 

Sydney’s largest street festivals. 

Mayor Laxale said the 

Granny Smith Festival is 

synonymous with the City 

of Ryde and the school visits 

serve an important role 

to involve students in the 

celebrations and teach them 

about an important piece of 

community history.

Unity building event 

open to Ryde’s 

spiritual community 

PEOPLE from all religious 

faiths and spiritual beliefs 

will be invited to an official, 

civic “unity building” event 

under an experiment be trialed 

by the City of Ryde. 

Councillors voted on Tuesday 

night to endorse the trial 

event which is expected to be 

hosted by Mayor Jerome Laxale 

along the lines of the Mayor’s 

Prayer Breakfast, which 

has been a predominantly 

Christian event. 

The councillors’ decision 

follows speeches at last Tuesday 

night’s council meeting 

from members of the Bahai 

Faith, who hope the event will 

promote friendship between 

people of different religions. 

“All people are created by 

God and Australia is a rich 

multicultural county,” Bahai 

member Sara Ahadizadeh 

said. 

“All the inter faith groups 

understand that peaceful coexistence 

means the end of 

conflicts. 

“For the purpose of unity 

and tolerance we can work 

together and make friends 

and become aware of our high 

standards and values.” 

Her colleague Gil Tabucananon 

took up the theme. 

“Ryde embraces diversity 

and multiculturalism and 

I hope the prayer breakfast is 

expanded beyond Christianity 

to include all world faiths because 

we have a lot to learn 

from each other,” he said. 

The inter faith event concept 

is supported by Clr Roy 

Maggio (Ind) and Clr Trenton 

Brown (Lib). 

“I’m delighted that Councillor 

Maggio is here to help 

spend the Mayoral allowance

the planning proposal 

will be made available 

for community consultation,

THANKS to Allcastle Homes, the Aussie dream of owning your own

A recent Housing Industry Association 

Residential Land Report shows 

that on a square metre basis, land 

prices in metropolitan Sydney have 

almost doubled over the past ten 

years, whilst those in Melbourne have 

risen by around two and a half times.

Economist Shane Garrett said:

POLICE NEWS 

VALE John Peter Morrisby 

JOHN PETER MORRISBY formerly of Cressy 

Road Ryde died on September 9 from cancer aged 

74. 

John was the elder son of the late Victor and Kathleen 

Morrisby. 

Vic was a Police officer and active local Ryde community 

worker including a church warden at the former 

Orient Street Monash Park Sunday School and church 

and a member of Ryde District Historical Society. 

He accepted the position of a trustee on the Addington 

Trust to help save Australia’s oldest complete 

settlers’ cottage at the invitation of Trust founder John 

F Booth. 

Kath was a nurse at Weemala the Home for Incurables 

now known as the Royal Rehab. 

John had a younger brother Stephen who became 

a senior police officer but predeceased John when officer 

in charge at Parramatta. 

John was a self employed truck driver for Fairfax delivering 

The Sydney Morning Herald daily and owned 

a hobby farm. 

He was a member of Royal Agricultural Society and 

a was a volunteer member and also a volunteer at historic 

Belgenny Farm at Camden. 

John was also an active member of Sydney St 

George’s Guild of former scouts and guides meeting 

at historic “Addington” where he had also helped to 

save it in the early fund raising days in his childhood. 

In later years John enjoyed travelling overseas and 

especially to exotic places like the Antarctic. 

JB had known John from his childhood days as his 

Sunday School teacher at St Thomas’ church and 

Sunday school at Orient Street Monash Park and 

maintained the association and friendship including 

inviting him to join the St George’s Guild. We will all 

miss him. RIP John.

Julian Barker produced a superb performance to win the club’s Major 

Pairs title for 2018 with a resounding 31-10 victory over John Bowring 

and Graham Screen. 

For six ends only one point separated the teams until end seven when 

Brian and Julian scored five in a fine display of draw bowls to put the 

margin at six points. John and Graham won the next two ends to trail 11-7 

but from then on it was a one horse race as Paxton and Barker turned on 

the style - winning nine of the last 10 ends and 14 of 20 played overall to 

claim the title. It was Barker’s first major trophy while the prolific Paxton 

added another to his already crowded trophy cabinet.

Putney bowlers triumphant as Ryde City 

Games tournament goes down to the wire 

NORTH Ryde RSL Mens Bowling Club president Barry Gibson teamed 

up with the experienced Don Fenelon to capture the club’s Major/Minor 

Pairs championship for 2018. They defeated the accomplished duo of Jim 

Morris and Terry Sweeney 22-10 in the final. It was a second title for stalwart 

Fenelon after his recent Major Pairs trophy win. 

PUTNEY Tennyson captured the annual Ryde Sports Foundation Ryde City Games lawn bowls 

tournament staged at Putney Bowling Club last Thursday. Pictured l to r are triumphant team 

members Kerry Beatty, Jock.Cunningham, Dave Walker, Kingsley Lake, Alwyn Long, Brian Prentice, 

Ron Rust, Rick Marrins, Ivor Purcell and Peter Joint receiving the trophy from Ryde Sports 

Foundation chairman Jim Hull. Putney won the title on countback with three wins, 18 points, 58 

margin and 95 ends from Denistone (18pts 58 margin 91 ends) and Gladesville (18pts 39 margin). 

It was Putney’s first Ryde City Games trophy win since 2011. Stalwart Jock Cunningham gave a 

special thank you to all who assisted the Match Committee in making the event a great success on

weekend at Birchgrove Oval.

He was ably supported

The talented Scott, who 

has represented the Australian 

U/16s and NSW 

U/17s in recent summers, 

cracked 19 boundaries 

and a six and shared 

key partnerships of 51 for 

the third wicket with Tom 

Mullen (15) and 91 for the 

fourth wicket with Daniel 

Jacob (45) to underline 

his potential. 

It was a classy batting 

display from the 18 year 

old Gladesville junior 

product who reminded 

club selectors of his temperament 

and skills at the 

top of the order. 

Just as impressive was 

the flamboyant Govers 

who thumped an incredible 

eight sixes plus four 

boundaries during his 

power-laden knock. 

The Tigers number six 

shared a sixth wicket 

union of 152 runs with 

talented keeper-batsman

Recognition for talented Alanna 

AUSTRALIAN Futsal soccer representative Alanna Fisher has capped a memorable 

2018 by receiving an overall Sports Achievement honour in the North Sydney 

Regional Community Awards. 17 year old Alanna is pictured accepting her award 

from North Sydney MP Trent Zimmerman at Norths Leagues Club last Thursday 

night. 

It follows her Club Six Encouragement Award at the 2017-18 TWT Club Six/Ryde 

Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Gala Dinner and Hunters Hill Sportsperson 

of the Year Award. Alanna starred as a defender and wing attack with 

the North West Sydney Koalas this season - helping the team reach the Premier 

League U/17 finals before tearing ankle ligaments. This also ruled her out of the 

Regional All Schools Cross Country championships. Alanna is now preparing to 

represent NSW at the Australian Futsal Championships in January.

Twenty year old Austin 

is one of six new 

additions to the squad

West Coast Fever head

for the second year 

running. 

It caps a memorable 

season for the ERNA 

junior product, who was 

named as a training partner 

for the Australian Diamonds 

team for their predeparture 

training camp 

last month. 

Austin was also named 

in the 2018-19 National 

Talent Squad as well as 

making her Suncorp Super 

Netball debut for the 

GIANTS this season. 

Fast5 coach Stacey 

Marinkovich is excited by 

the young and dynamic 

team that has been selected 

for the Melbourne 

tournament and is confident 

the team has what it 

takes to claim the title.

World Series provides 

fantastic opportunity for 

us to showcase and further 

develop the talent 

present within Netball 

Australia’s programs – 

different athletes bring 

different skill sets and we

the ideal combination of

Australia will play five 

games against Malawi, 

Jamaica, New Zealand, 

England and South Africa 

over the weekend 

and the top two teams 

will play off in the Grand 

Final on Sunday evening. 

Fast5 Netball is fast, 

exciting and energetic 

– with different rules to 

regular netball to give it 

a quicker edge including: 

five players-a-side, 

shortened quarters, multiple 

point shots and double 

point power plays.

Austin turned in a 

strong performance for 

Eastwood Ryde Hawks 

in their gallant 60-55 loss 

to Central Coast Heart in 

the 2018 Netball NSW 

Premier League Opens 

Grand Final at the Genea 

Netball Centre last week. 

The Heart became 

the third team to have 

its name etched on the 

Premier League trophy 

after Sutherland Stingrays 

won the inaugural 

competition in 2016 and 

Manly Warringah Sapphires 

were victorious 

last year. 

A big first quarter was 

the key to the win, and 

while ERNA came close 

to levelling matters late 

in the forth quarter, they 

could never fully close 

the gap which had its 

foundations in the opening 

15 minutes. 

It was a rip-roaring 

start to the game as 

both sides brought huge 

intensity but it was the 

Heart who settled better 

in attack and defence. 

An early tip by Lauren 

Moore set the tone for 

what would be a strong 

first quarter for the Heart 

goal keeper and her efforts 

were replicated by 

teammates up the court. 

At the end of the first 

quarter the Central 

Coasters had an 18-11 

lead and the early pressure 

was on ERNA. 

The second quarter 

was a more evenly 

contested affair as the 

Hawks looked to close 

the gap, however, some 

costly mistakes in the 

midcourt were hampering 

the supply to Alison 

Miller and Kiera Austin in 

the shooting circle. 

The Heart lead went out 

to 10 goals at one stage 

but good work from the 

Hawks allowed them rein 

in the deficit to six by 

halftime; the minor premiers 

winning the second 

quarter 15-14. 

The Hawks needed a 

good third quarter to stay 

well in the hunt and they 

didn’t disappoint, fighting 

for every possession 

and getting themselves 

back into the game. 

While both sides were 

again guilty of throwing 

away possession, it was 

the Heart who were starting 

to gain the ascendancy, 

winning the third 

period 15-14 to put just 

five between the sides 

with 15 minutes to play. 

The Hawks’ comeback 

didn’t rattle the Heart, 

however, and they played 

some very impressive 

netball in all areas of 

the court to reclaim a 

10-goal lead and leave 

ERNA with a huge mountain 

to climb in the final 

ten minutes. 

However, while lesser 

teams would have folded, 

the Hawks stood 

strong to force a series of 

turnovers – Georgia Marshall 

one of numerous 

players getting her side 

back in the contest. With 

three minutes to play the 

gap had amazingly been 

reduced to two and suddenly 

all the pressure 

was on the Heart. 

Despite this, the Central 

Coast side didn’t 

panic and some Maddie 

Taylor goals, supported 

by good work from the 

likes of Moore, Demi Evans 

and Kristen Kessler, 

steadied the ship. 

With the clock against 

them, the Hawks became 

hurried in their play 

and turnovers were easier 

for their opponents 

to come by. Having very 

nearly pulled off a seemingly 

impossible comeback, 

the Hawks went 

down by five in the end, 

but their effort couldn’t 

be faulted.
