“Hello Family,<br />
It’s with great pleasure I speak to you in this new edition of the <strong>Vans</strong><br />
<strong>Magazine</strong>, as I have just recently joined the DTC buying team as an<br />
Assistant Buyer. This opportunity is a dream come true.<br />
I have always been fascinated by actions sports, music and art. If I wasn’t<br />
playing the guitar or drawing, I would be skating, snowboarding or<br />
surfing on whatever board I could find.<br />
I moved to the United States at the age of seven. It was the first time I<br />
was confronted with a fundamental change in my life. My environment<br />
was different and I had to adapt. As an introverted kid, this wasn’t easy. I<br />
would sit for hours looking at the older kids skating around in the streets<br />
around my neighborhood. It did not take long for my parents to surrender<br />
and gift me my first ever skateboard.<br />
It’s through skateboarding, I learned that nothing comes for granted.<br />
That dedication and commitment, is what helps you to succeed in what<br />
you want to accomplish. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, you<br />
must get back on your feet and try again. Difficult times are when you<br />
grow as a person and when you learn the most. You can use frustration<br />
as the fuel of your success, because you can only succeed if you try.<br />
I couldn’t be happier to join a brand I was looking up to as a kid… But I<br />
had no idea how strong the family was. Since I joined I have met people<br />
with the same values, hobbies and eagerness to share, and this gives me<br />
even more energy. It’s our job to continue and push ourselves and our<br />
consumers to always strive and be the best versions of ourselves: by<br />
being creative, dedicated, open and understanding. I am very proud to be<br />
part of something I believe in and contribute as much as possible.<br />

Pat Moore surfaced onto the snowboard street-scene in the early 2000’s<br />

MÁLAGA, Spain (September 23, 2018) – The 2018 <strong>Vans</strong> BMX Pro Cup World<br />
Championships celebrated a monumental finish as the series crowned Larry<br />
Edgar and Teresa Azcoaga the 2018 world champions of BMX park terrain in<br />
Málaga, Spain, earlier today. Defending <strong>Vans</strong> BMX Pro Cup World<br />
Champion Larry Edgar demonstrated some of the best BMX riding the world<br />
has ever seen with colossal airs and technical tricks to earn back-to-back Pro<br />
Cup World Championship title wins. Spanish native Teresa<br />
Azcoaga upheld her series lead to earn the first-ever women’s BMX park<br />
terrain championship title, cementing a historic moment for the BMX<br />
community.<br />
Edgar remarked with pride, “The level of riding across all stops this year has<br />
been incredible, so to be the overall winner is truly special.”
In the main event finals, 2017 <strong>Vans</strong> Pro Cup Málaga event winner Chase<br />
Hawk prevailed yet again with steadfast bike control throughout Rubén<br />
Alcántara’s park to take home his second Málaga victory. Dennis<br />
Enarson tracked close behind, putting down a huge tail whip transfer into the<br />
vert wall to secure a second-place finish, in addition to taking the Best Trick<br />
award. In third place, Corey Walsh showcased ingenuity, unlocking some of<br />
the course’s most unique lines paired with enormous back-to-back transfers<br />
to earn the Best Line award.<br />
USA’s Perris Benegas revealed the day’s most powerful riding for the<br />
women’s division, ruling the course with speed and grace to claim her first<br />
Pro Cup podiumwin, while Spain’s front-runner Teresa Azcoaga turned up the<br />
heat in her last run to clench second place and the overall series<br />
championship title. Pro Cup newcomer Lara Lessman maintained her semifinals<br />
momentum, surpassing the stacked field with advanced tricks and big<br />
airs to place third.<br />
“I’m completely blown away, I can’t believe I won the world championship<br />
title,” Azcoaga gratefully expressed. “To go from only riding my local park one<br />
year ago, to winning the series is a dream.”<br />

“Heart and Sole is a funny thing. Lots of companies and people preach it but very few put it<br />
.<br />
into action. It means completely different things to everyone.<br />
To me it was summed up in one phrase from the man himself. “Give A Shit”<br />
To me heart and sole is giving a shit, about every action and every person in my day to day life.<br />
I find myself sitting there thinking what would SVD do?<br />
I’ve always related to <strong>Vans</strong> for that reason, they seemed genuine, passionate, caring and more<br />
than just a company.<br />
I’d made it out of retail but working for a company that I’ve been in love with since a kid was<br />
an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.<br />
When I started at <strong>Vans</strong> I was a little lost, I’d moved back to Essex leaving all my friends in<br />
Southampton and was mid break up.<br />
I was only in store for 5 days before I was lucky enough to experience RLS. Which as we all<br />
know was an amazing experience. RLS just confirmed everything I thought about <strong>Vans</strong>, I’d<br />
gained a new family and it truly helped me out of my slump. I was excited to get back to<br />
Braintree and get the ball rolling in store feeding back everything we had learnt.<br />
I reckon a good 90% of people reading this are already questioning where the hell is Braintree?<br />
Braintree is a small place and we are a small team but we GAS all over the place. I’ve been<br />
very fortunate to have a team so willing to back the changes I wanted to make in store. We<br />
aren’t without our faults but no family are. We work on them together and help to better each<br />
other one day at a time. This team has really taught me that if you give someone the love and<br />
attention they need they will truly do the same for you.<br />
Not long after starting in Braintree we launched SAP. Now we all know the fun this has bought<br />
us over the last few months. With the build up to launch and over stocking situation, times<br />
were super tough. Moral was down and we had shoes coming out of every gap possible in<br />
store. If it wasn’t for the hard work and dedication of my ASM Zac I don’t think I could have<br />
managed it. He worked countless overtime and never once complained. His heart and sole was<br />
undeniable. Alongside my supervisor Heather they have both taught me PMA. We are very<br />
good in store of hitting a wall, having a good moan, before working together finding a solution<br />
and tackling it head on. They are both so passionate about this brand and show that in their<br />
work and dedication to the family.

BACK to VRLS<br />
I’ll be completely honest when saying working for <strong>Vans</strong> isn’t easy. We face new problems<br />
almost daily and our expectations are high due to our passion. Although tough the rewards<br />
out weigh the hard times. Watching your staff thrive at their jobs, being part of the uk south<br />
family, being part of the vans brand makes it all worth it.<br />
Family is what makes this company what it is. It’s the foundations to which we build our<br />
stores.<br />
Heart and Sole to me is the little things people do without hesitation or thought about<br />
themselves. They do it because they care. To me it is a phone call (let’s be real) almost daily<br />
with Luke just to catch up and ask how I am. It’s Andy driving from Portsmouth to Braintree at<br />
5am to come help out. It’s Johnny working long hours alongside you keeping me sane. The<br />
constant calls to and guidance from Rhys and team in Portsmouth. These are just the little<br />
things I’ve seen people in this company do not because they’ve been asked but because it’s<br />
who they are. They embody the <strong>Vans</strong> way of life.<br />
At RLS we discussed heart sharing with our teams, but how often do we heart share as<br />
managers. All I could ask is that after reading this you call your nearest shop or perhaps a<br />
shop you’ve never spoken to before. Just ask how they are and have a little heart share over<br />
the phone. You never know what type of day someone is having and little heart and sole can<br />
remind them why we do what we do.<br />
Surround yourself with positivity and compassion. Spread love and keep the heart and sole<br />
alive in stores.<br />
