9th
ANNIVERSARY
LC: At what age did you first sing in front of an audience?
PS: 8 years old... I entered a contest with my sister Sandra (11
at the time and now a gospel singer) and my brother James Lee
Stanley (14 at the time and a recording artist and renowned
singer songwriter from LA. who wrote “Coming
Out of Hiding” and “I Don’t Want to Talk About It”)
LC: In 1979 you entered the Top Twenty Billboard Dance
Chart with “This is Hot”! How did that feel and was there a
celebration somewhere?
PS: OMG It was amazing...It felt like a dream or altered reality...I
was treated like a princess, first class all the way. I would
hear me on the radio and go “that is me?” This Is Hot was first
released in the winter of 1979 in Germany and all over Europe.
I traveled Europe doing many TV performances and concerts.
My first big concert was in Munich Germany. Then EMI America
released the album in the US. I first did a concert in LA and then
started touring doing concerts and radio stations all over the US.
LC: Your brother wrote your song, “I Don’t Want to Talk
About it”. How did that come about?
PS: My brother James has been writing songs since he was
a teenager and always sends me new songs writes,, just so I
could hear them. Well “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” was actually
a country song..I listened to it and thought it was such a
clever song. Then another day Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean”
came on the radio and I started singing “I Don’t Want To Talk
About It” with the beat and I thought Oh My Goodness this
should be a Dance song…. So I went home and worked on it.
My husband Frank, at the time, and I rented a studio and engineer
and produced it ourselves. We shipped 28,000 records
out of our garage before TSR Records picked it up and helped
us get to #13 on the charts. We were thrilled. My career started
flourishing again and I hit the road once more.
LC: Both songs rocketed to #13 on the Billboard Dance Chart.
You seem to have a thing with 13! Do you have any lucky
experiences you could share?
PS: Funny you should say that. I have a son Frank Mandaro...
when he started preschool, they numbered the children and his
last name starting with M, so he was assigned 13. Then, when he
started playing sports he was assigned number 13. So 13 is his
lucky number and I realized WOW it is my lucky number too!
LC: I met you in 1984 at a club on Red River in Austin Texas
called, OZ. That was the year you came out with your hit
song, “Coming Out of Hiding”. Was that song cathartic for
you?
PS: You know, by 1984 I had many friends and acquaintances
in the gay community. I performed at club after club
and met so many wonderful people. I was getting ready
to record a new song and I told my brother James “I need
a new song and I want a gay anthem, can you write me
one? About 6 weeks later I get “Coming Out of Hiding”
in the mail on cassette tape and almost fell over. I loved it,
so once again I worked up an arrangement and we went
back in the studio and wouldn’t quit until it was the way I
knew it should sound. What an incredible thrill to see it light
up a dance floor.
LC: Well, it certainly was for me too! This was one of the first
gay clubs I ever dared to sneak into! Lol I was amazed at
your energy and you definitely earned my respect back then!
Do you have a particular performance where something
went wrong and turned out funny? Nah that never happened...ok
tell us...
PS: I could tell a bunch of them LOL...I was doing GAY
PRIDE in Ft Lauderdale..”Coming Out of Hiding” starts and
just as the song is really rocking, the reel to reel tape (that
is what we used in the 80’s) falls off the tape deck and
with thousands of people there, it goes silent. I look at the
audience for a second... smile and start stomping my feet.
The whole crowd started stomping and clapping to the beat
and we sang the rest of the song together Acapella. By the
end they were cheering and laughing, we had pulled it off
together. It was definitely a memorable moment in my life.
LC: First I am so excited that Tony Marchese is bringing
you to Palm Springs for their 8th Anniversary and that we
get to see you perform. And also what do you like about
Palm Springs or if you have never been here what are you
looking forward to discovering?
PS: What I love about Palm Springs is the weather, the
beauty, the restaurants, and the people. There is a special
sense of community there. Plus, I have great friends there.
Palm Springs is a slice of heaven. I was there about 3 or 4
years ago for an “Evening Under The Stars” I can not wait
to get back there and perform and am very excited that
Tony Marchese has invited me to do the anniversary party.
Thank you so much for this interview and I so look forward
to seeing everyone on Nov 5th.

JONATHAN KARRANT
Jonathan Karrant was born in the heart of America at
the foothills of the Ozarks in the old western town of
Fort Smith, Arkansas east of the Arkansas River.
The joyous home in which Jonathan grew up was filled
with art, music, and dance. He spent a lot of time at
his grandfather Bill and grandmother Goldia’s home
where there was always much comedy and performance
appreciation. His mother, Nancy, danced and
taught for a local ballet company. She is an artist,
writer, teacher, and an avid music lover. As a college
student in Memphis, Tennessee, she sang with a girl’s
band in the 1960’s. Jonathan’s father, John, is a business
man and a broker who has a passion for farming
and gardening, and owns a ranch just southwest of
Fort Smith. While growing up, Jonathan spent many
hours helping on the farm, enjoying the outdoors, the
livestock and wildlife. Jonathan’s sister, Indra, studied
dance from an early age and later excelled as a
dancer/ choreographer.
His mother says Jonathan began singing from the time
he was born! One day when he was eight months
old and swinging in his wind-up mechanical swing
while listening to music with huge earphones on his
little ears, his mother noticed that his eyes were closed
and he was turning his head from side to side in that
recognizable musician’s horizontal nod. She gasped,
“A Musician!” To her, that was a good thing, and she
was not at all surprised as time went on and he continued
to show musical ability and love of music.
Jonathan sang for hours every day, honing-in on his
own type of music and style. When he was seven he
began singing publicly. His first solo was at his church
with Nancy Vernon, musical director and organist,
directing and accompanying him. Then, that summer
in Eureka Springs, he walked into a nightclub, made
his way to the stage, and asked the band to accompany
him while he sang “Stormy Monday”. The band
agreed, and he was a big hit with the audience, as
well as with the band.
As a teenager Jonathan was active in local theatre,
and studied music and theatre in middle and high
schools. After graduating from high school, director/
writer/actor Meir Z. Ribalow recommended him
for an intensive course of study at the William Es-
JONATHAN KARRANT ALBUM RELEASE
Jonathan Karrant returns to the stage to perform
songs from and celebrate the release of his new
album featuring a collection of standards from iconic
favorites to obscure tunes. Jonathan’s acclaimed studio
album, On and On hit #4 on the Billboard Jazz
charts. - October 20, 2018

Jonathan Karrant’s acclaimed
album, “On and On” hit #4 on
the Billboard Jazz charts. He
has received honors throughout
the U.S. including; the New
York City Jazz Honors, “Best
Singer” for the Bravo California
Awards and Jonathan was
named one of the top 12 rising
Jazz vocalists in New York by
NYJR. You’re sure to be thrilled
by this engaging young singer.
per Acting Studio in New York City. During this time he
auditioned and was hired by the Metropolitan Opera
House to play characters roles in performances, one of
them being the opera “Aida” starring Luciano Pavorotti. It
was an extraordinary time for him, working at the Met in
major productions at Lincoln Center, brushing shoulders
on stage with great stars.
Jonathan began to take every opportunity to sing and
perform at all kinds of events, weddings, celebrations, at
church, in clubs and lounges, wherever he was asked to
perform. After performing as a soloist with the Don Bailey
Jazz Concerts, he was advised to strike-out to Las Vegas.
Without ever having visited there, he drove across country
and jumped into the music scene, singing in supper
clubs and lounges and casinos. While there, he had the
opportunity to record with Vince Falcone, noted music
director and pianist. And, in San Diego, he began performing
in some of the most respected venues of that city.
He has traveled for performances across the states as
well as in Europe. He continues to grow an adoring and
loyal following of fans who appreciate his artistry.
Audiences have characterized Jonathan as a great interpreter
of song, a storyteller, a singer who brings music
and lyric alive. Some refer to Jonathan as an amazing
song-stylist who sings from the American songbook, an
entertainer of star quality. Others say he paints a picture,
he presents a mood and captivates a room through song.
Jazz Corner said “Karrant’s voice is romantic without
being cloying, warm but not forced” and “that he sings
standards with an emotional weight that make it seem as
if he had written the songs himself”. He will tell you that
he loves people, loves connecting with other musicians
and with his audience, and loves sharing time with those
who also love to celebrate life and music.
Jonathan’s album “On and On” hit to number four in the
jazz charts. The album features such songs as “Don’t Let
Me Be Lonely Tonight” and “Doodlin’”, as well as the title
track, and was produced by Tyler Monks, with pianist
Josh Nelson, bassist Rob Thorsen, guitarist Mark Shapiro,
and drummer Duncan Moore.
Jonathan was honored in the 2014 New York City Jazz
Cabaret Honors and, in 2015, he was voted “Best
Singer” for the Bravo San Diego Awards. Also, in 2015
Jonathan was asked to present two-time Grammy Award
winner, Diane Schurr, with the proclamation of “Diane
Schurr Day” in Palm Springs, Ca.
In his popular single, “Lady in Red”, Jonathan truly shines.
Backed by pianist Mikan Zlatkovich, bassist Bob Magnusson
and drummer Duncan Moore, Karrant sets himself
apart from other contemporaries on this single. Ultimately,
he displays a brilliance through phrasing and languid
passages that linger.
WOW!!
By Lisa Miller
Day Adventurer
The Desert Made Him Do It!
In the middle of the vast and open Mojave Desert near
the east entrance of the Joshua Tree National Park is a
magical roadside attraction. The Tile House, is an otherworldly
fascinating and whimsical display of creativity.
A magnificent labor of love, the art is from the hands of
mosaic artist and homeowner, Perry Hoffman. What began
in the year 2000, is now an eccentric gallery available
to be enjoyed as a one of a kind vacation rental. It
certainly caught my attention. So I made reservations to
explore the living gallery with Noah, my son and fellow
adventurer.
The Tile House is a place to disconnect and tune into the
enchanting world of imagination. A world of rhythm,
patterning and playfulness. A place to marvel at breathtaking
sunsets and enjoy magnificent stargazing under
clear desert skies.
The home is covered in a spectacular mix of Mexican
tile, smalti, ceramics, fused glass, stained glass and
other found treasures.
“The desert told me to do this.” Perry reminisced. “It’s
the desert’s fault.”
When asked if it will ever be complete, Perry resounded,
“Not as long as I’m alive! I will continue to respond to
the whispers of the desert as long as I live.”
The home is a perfect place for filming and photoshoots.
For the 17th year, the gallery will be a part of the annual
Highway 62 Open Studio Art Tour, Oct 13-14, and Oct 20-
21 as an open studio. For more info: www.hwy62arttours.org
