Driven youth
turns art into
thriving business
Congolese SMME hits
ground running in SA
Founder and owner of Esk Originators, Vuyo Khumalo
Anele Gumede
Vuyo Ayanda Khumalo owner and
founder of Esk Originators, was born
and raised in Esikhawini Township
a small area in the KwaZulu Natal province.
Esk Originators mainly offers Photography,
videography, designing of photo book and logos
“Growing up in Esikhawini was pretty much
like any other township where we play sports
and any other riddles that one can navigate to
pass time, but I knew that arts and everything
around it was definitely in my radar and ‘fine
arts’ was one of my hidden talents. So my
passion for art grew from my drawings and
beyond trying to rap and reciting poems I had
written during my primary years.”
For many people starting a business is for the
purpose of accumulating income, whilst young
people like Vuyo are driven by the need to help
their community.
“When we started we were actually putting
together a non-profitable organisation that
would serve all the kids around our area, we
had always felt that the local municipality is not
doing enough to assist the community to truly
reach their potential with the infrastructure and
the programs”
Vuyo says looking at the people in the
community they had agreed to also start
something of their own as a side project that
will help them sustain who they are and that
was the birth of Esk Originators.
“I consider myself as an artistic photographer
because the photos I take do not resonate with the
norm but portrays an utterly new dimension of
taking photographs.” He added
“When I started all I had was my drawings and
no digital camera on me but I would take pictures
using my phone and edit them as if they were actual
drawings, and that drove me to come up with a new
photography genre called ‘artistic photography’ I
felt that I could merge arts and photography. What
inspired and still inspires me to be in this business
is the passion and obsession I have for pop culture
and the different dynamics that we adapt to in the
townships.
Since the dawn of freedom in South Africa
and the birth of the rainbow nation, a huge
number of people from other African countries
have come to our shores to seek shelter and a
better life.
Some resort to finding piece jobs in order
to sustain themselves, for 22-year old Oliver
James, who was born and bred in a small village
called Largest in the Democratic Republic of
Congo, starting his own business was the way
to go.
Young James is the owner of City Mini Foods,
a business he started soon after relocating to
South Africa upon completion of his Business
Management Studies in his home country.
James’ background did little to hinder his drive
for success, the young business owner comes
from a poor background, and according to him,
it is for that reason that he always strives to
prosper.
“I come from a small poor family that is made
up of five people and I was the only one who
was given the chance to study. With the past
experience and hardship my family has gone
through I was inspired to open this shop and
help better the lives of many. George William
plays a huge role in my life and has inspired
me to change many life whether through job
creation or helping out the community in any
way I can.”
People are either made or broken by their
experiences in life, James who has lived through
struggle and hardship understands what people
go through and has made it his mission to help
them.
“My goal is to satisfy the society and all my
consumers, by making it easier for them
to afford what they need and never allow
them to live in poverty. As a member of the
community it is my job to serve the people in
my community by providing what they need
and require, having the capability to deal with
people.”
Like any other new project, the starting point
always provide the toughest of challenges and
according to the driven businessman, starting
his business also had its challenges.
“I once had a fear of dealing with people and
attracting consumers wasn’t easy at all. But as
time went I gain more confident in myself and
was able to progress as a business person. I want
to urge all starting SMMES that as they embark
in this journey they should always enter with
self-confident trusting your is most important,
being determined and punctual also plays a
huge role in a business.” Concluded James.
