Clermont thanks carers who give from the heart 

CLERMONT Aged Care in Ryde paid tribute 

to carers last Friday. 

The tribute was made by CEO Steve Gordon 

and Ryde MP Victor Dominello during a 

luncheon provided for Clermont’s team of carers, 

who have aged and frail family members 

living there. 

“Today is not only an opportunity for us to 

thank you for being carers but an opportunity 

for you to get to know one another and network, 

because we are all part of the Clermont 

family,” Mr Gordon said. 

Ryde MP Victor Dominello said words could 

not express his deep gratitude for the commitment 

carers give. 

“I know how important your role is because I 

saw my own mum care for her parents and I’ll 

never forget that,” he said. 

“I cannot think of a more pure form of love 

than being a carer, it is total love for one person 

to give up their life for someone else.” 

He said the State Government is there to support 

carers but cannot replicate the care they 

give. 

“No government could ever give what you 

give,” he said. 

“Yes, the government can provide the services 

to support carers but the love you give 

comes straight from the heart.” 

Carers at the luncheon told The Weekly 

Times they appreciate the compassion and 

care shown to their loved ones by Clermont’s 

staff and thanked Mr Gordon for hosting the 

luncheon. 

“We do feel very much a part of the Clermont 

family and it was very kind of Mr Gordon to 

put on this luncheon to thank us,” they said. 

“It says a lot about those values that are important 

to Clermont.”

Dear Sir, 

Having had the opportunity 

to work directly 

with Mr Tudehope over 

the past year, on matters 

effecting aged persons, 

and his complete 

devotion to the residents 

of his electorate 

here at Epping and surrounding 

area, I find this 

decision of his, as serving 

the party, and not 

the residents, difficult to 

reconcile. 

This is difficult for me to 

say so, as my respect for 

Mr Tudehope as 

both a politician and a 

respected voice in our 

electorate, on many 

issues affecting our suburbs, 

is second to none. 

Just look at his record! 

Securing funding for vital 

residents benefits, as 

noted in your publication. 

So why is the Premier 

prepared to accept Mr 

Tudehopes’ decision? To 

overcome political strife 

within the party. 

And who pays the price? 

We do. 

A move to the Upper 

House is the least he 

should expect for his 

loyalty to the party. 

A job for the boys! No, 

not so, Mr Tudehopes’ 

integrity would not allow 

such to occur. 

Let’s not forget that 

these days voters do not 

necessarily vote for a 

party, they vote for the 

person who will represent 

them and their 

concerns. This is exactly 

what Mr Tudehope did.

With the rail line closure 

now upon us it can 

be easy to think of all 

the negatives and inconveniences 

that the 

shutdown will cause for 

thousands of commuters 

and for the many 

schools, businesses 

and Universities in Macquarie 

Park. 

However, we need to 

look towards the future. 

This time next year, 

our State, NSW will join 

London, Hong Kong and 

Paris with a world class 

metro system as well as a 

long overdue North West 

rail line. 

Anyone who has seen 

the efficiency of a metro 

system should be enthralled 

by the potential 

that this has in Australia. 

A train every four minutes 

will be far more efficient 

than what we 

have now and far more 

convenient than the ridiculous 

10-15 minutes 

between trains for such a 

congested line. 

On top of this we will 

still have additional bus 

lanes as a result of the 

shutdown and a very 

impressive Stryder shuttle 

service from Keolis 

Downer. 

This time next year we 

will be thanking the State

fuels like coal, oil and 

natural gas. 

And who burns these 

fuels - mankind. And 

since we’ve been doing it 

at such an alarming rate 

that extra CO2 has to be 

absorbed somewhere. 

Unfortunately at the 

same time we are deforesting 

and adding livestock 

and they produce 

methane which is considerably 

worse than carbon 

dioxide. 

And oceans are taking 

up that extra CO2 which 

makes them more acidic 

and this disturbs the balance 

required to support 

marine life. 

Our planet is already in 

trouble and the causes 

are already known and 

accepted throughout the 

world by the victims and 

the perpetrators of global 

warming. 

I’d certainly support us 

all writing to our local MP 

or our new PM to ask for 

their support in ensuring 

Australia to do more, not 

less, in the area of increasing 

renewables and 

drastically reducing our 

carbon output. Our children’s 

lives depend on it!

PETCH VERDICT NEARS

A verdict is nearing in another farcical ICAC ‘blackmail’ court case with Ryde Emeritus 

Mayor Ivan Petch on trial in the NSW District Court for allegedly blackmailing Acting Ryde 

Council General Manager Danielle Dickson. 

The court has been told that Danielle Dickson used her key to 

access former Mayor Ivan Petch’s office, to “snoop” around 

with fellow council officer Roy Newsome, looking for incriminating 

documents for ICAC. 

Ivan Petch is on trial for allegedly blackmailing Danielle Dickson in 

May 2013, three months after Petch appointed her in the role of 

Ryde Council’s Acting GM. 

Court costs had been accrued in legal action initiated by Ryde 

Council against councillors, to restrain them from taking any action 

to terminate former GM John Neish in mid-2012. 

Mr Neish eventually left his role under a Deed of Release with Ryde 

Council, after he was found downloading porn on his laptop using 

council resources. 

His departure brought an end to legal proceedings, leaving the 

mat-ter of legal costs incurred by the affected councillors, 

outstanding. 

Despite expert legal advice from Bryan Belling of K&L Gates 

and Stefano Laface of AJL Legal, that council’s insurance policy 

with Zu-rich should be used to reimburse councillors, Ms Dickson - 

who had been delegated responsibility to resolve the matter - did 

not discon-tinue the ongoing Supreme Court matter. 

Mr Petch’s repeated efforts to have Ms Dickson reimburse councillors 

in accordance to what they were entitled to, are central to 

the “blackmail” allegation. 

Defence barrister Graham Turnbull SC has asked the jury to 

consid-er whether the pair›s four-minute discussion in the mayoral 

chamber was blackmail or «fatherly advice, about reimbursement». 

«There is no way in the wide world this is a demand, that it›s 

an unwarranted demand, it›s made with menaces or that it was 

capable of affecting anybody›s capacity to do what they thought 

was right,» he said.

Mr Turnbull also argued that Ms Dickson “was well acquainted” 

ith the Independent Commission Against Corruption before her 

onversation with Petch and her subsequent contact with ICAC 

nvestigators. 

“Ms Dickson was in the habit of making notes, making notes almost 

s soon as things occurred,” he told the jury. 

“She was also, you may find.. in the habit of speaking with ICAC both 

efore this event and afterwards.” 

In her closing address on Monday, crown prosecutor Donna Daleo 

said the then-mayor made “a threat of something detrimental or unpleasant” 

to Ms Dickson. 

Hundreds of villages

As The Weekly Times was going to press this week, Mr Turnbull 

was due to complete his closing address. This was to be followed 

by Judge Nicole Noman’s summing up before the jury retired to 

consider a verdict. 

The present trial comes more than a year after John Goubran was 

cleared on blackmail charges and Mr Petch was consequently also 

cleared on accessory charges. 

Magistrate Beverley Schurr, in June 2017, had ruled ICAC’s centrepiece 

allegation, used to justify its Ryde investigation, fell short 

of the requisite standard of proof, with the prosecution case flawed 

with major inconsistencies. 

The supposed plot, according to ICAC, involved a threat to ex-Ryde 

Council GM John Neish’s job if the Civic Centre proposal was not 

delayed until after the September 2012 council elections. 

But Magistrate Schurr found a fatal flaw in the allegation was the 

inability to establish an offence under NSW law which amounted to 

influencing Neish’s exercise of public duty, as he did not have the 

necessary delegations. 

The prosecution case was already in disarray after much of its evidence 

was ruled inadmissible by Magistrate Beverley Schurr, following 

200 separate challenges to evidence by legal representatives for 

both Mr Goubran and Mr Petch, in October 2016. 

Counsel for Mr Goubran, Maurice Neil QC, at the time said “as little 

as five per cent” of one key witness’ evidence was admissible and 

the court had been “dumped with a massive amount of material held 

by a tribunal not bound by the rules of evidence. It shouldn’t happen.”

MCC Board third attempt 

to change Constitution 

The current Constitution dates back 

to 2002 and warrants change. However, 

the “sticking point” which Board members 

have to live with, is a history of 

seven years of disgracefully unethical 

behaviour by CEOs and irresponsible 

directors. 

Fortunately for the College, there are 

enough members determined not to allow 

history to repeat itself. 

In March 2015 Chairman Sue Murray 

and newly appointed CEO Theresa Collignon 

sought to change the Constitution 

to include proxy voting. 

Previously, the College was under 

ASIC which overruled the Constitution. 

However in 2014, the governing body 

was changed from ASIC to the ACNC 

which gave the Constitution full authority 

with no proxy voting. 

At the March 2015 EGM proxy voting 

was rejected outright because former

memorial at Loftus Park Square in Epping this Saturday October 13.

historian. His work included writing illustrated books depicting the 

history of various districts he had a passion for including Epping, 

Carlingford Mobbs Hill, Conjola, Ryde and Mollymook. Alex was also 

a long serving member of Epping Civic Trust and founded the Loftus 

Square Park Committee.

Former Hunters Hill Mayor Bruce 

Edelman OAM passed away last 

Sunday after a recent illness. 

Dr Edelman (79) was the Mayor of 

Hunters Hill from 1985 until 1987. 

He was also the founder of Hunters 

Hill’s State Emergency Services Unit 

and the first Controller, establishing the 

unit back in 1991 with another former 

Hunters Hill Mayor Sue Hoopmann and 

Ken Iles. 

A notable oral surgeon in Sydney’s 

Eastern Suburbs, Dr Edelman 

was praised by Hunters Hill Council 

in The Weekly Times in 2005. 

“On forming the Hunters Hill SES 21 

years ago Dr Edelman used his home 

as a base and directed resident calls 

for assistance to Lane Cove or Ryde.” 

“To set up the SES he was given a small 

utility truck and a garage behind Henley 

Cottage on Victoria Road. 

“The house opposite Henley Cottage 

– now the Long Day Care Centre 

– was offered by Council to 

serve as the SES headquarters. 

“Hunters Hill SES is now in the Old 

Store of the Gladesville Hospital and is 

shared by St John’s Ambulance Service, 

centrally located behind the Gladesville 

Police Station.” 

A long standing member of the Hunters 

Hill community, he is survived by 

his wife Christine and daughter Sally. 

Funeral details are yet to be announced.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale said the Granny 

Smith Festival is synonymous with the City of Ryde 

and school visits serve an important role to involve 

students in the celebrations and teach them 

about an important piece of community history. 

“This year’s Granny Smith Festival promises 

to be bigger than ever with something to cater 

for everyone as we celebrate the 150th anniversary 

of the Granny Smith apple,” he said.

Students Maxx Heaton, Sarah D’Mello and Aarish 

Mistry from Denistone East Public School said 

they looked forward to watching the freshly planted 

school apple trees grow and hoped the festival 

would promote health as well as history. 

“Eating apples are good for you, especially 

for your teeth,” they said. 

Mayor Laxale hopes the students’ mums and 

dads will explore recipes that use Granny Smith 

Apples, especially the traditional apple pies. 

The local schools that each received two trees are

Chinese Garden of Friendship

To the sight and sound of Chinese drums and lion 

dance, some of our Ryde and Eastwood citizens, 

led by the Hon. Victor Dominello MP, Minister for 

Finance, Services and Property, joined a cheery 

crowd at the Chinese Garden of Friendship, Darling 

Harbour, for its 30th anniversary and heritage-listing 

celebration on Thursday evening October 4. 

Simon Chan, of the Friendship Advisory 

Committee, thanked Minister Dominello for his ardent 

support of the famous landmark; the symbol 

of friendship between Australia and China is, in the 

Minister’s words: “a cultural anchor, to show our 

trust and respect for Chinese culture both here and 

abroad”. 

A carved Chinese name-seal resembling an ancient 

imperial seal topped with a dragon’s head was 

presented to the Minister as a token of gratitude. 

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) Laurie Pearcey 

of UNSW, a sponsorship partner, talked about the 

history of Chinese students in Australia going back 

to 1949. 

Surrounded by tranquil gardens and exotic pavilions, 

wine and champagne flowed, canapes and 

fine foods were served. 

The gratified party dispersed into the night – having 

experienced the synergy of friendship and collaboration 

between East and West.

Why I would like to be Granny Smith Festival Queen: Ryde has been very welcoming 

ever since I started calling it home 17 years ago. The opportunities I’ve been granted and 

the experiences I’ve had the pleasure of sharing have significantly contributed towards 

the person I’ve become. I would therefore, like to take this opportunity to give back to the 

community and use this platform to share the cultural diversity and harmonious community 

that defines Ryde. My studies in Law and Commerce at the University of New South 

Wales have highlighted that society works best when individuals are involved and feel a

Rave reviews for new playground 

I am delighted to report that the initial feedback about the new 

playground at ELS Hall Park, which recently opened to the 

public, has been nothing but positive. 

This playground has something for every child with slides, 

climbing areas, a rope swing and a flying fox. It also has 

inclusive elements, including a high back swing and a toddler’s 

combination unit, both with soft-fall rubber. 

Another highlight is a large sculpture component featuring three 

‘cubbies’ that are designed based on the native flora found in 

ELS Hall Park. 

For those who have not seen the new 

facilities first-hand, I would encourage you 

to do so as you will not be disappointed.

on its commitment to provide the local 

community with safe and accessible 

high-quality play areas. 

Community outraged after 

interim heritage order ignored 

Just a week after Council unanimously 

resolved to place an interim heritage order 

on a historic home in Denistone, came the 

awful news that builders had accessed the 

property and caused extensive damage to 

the interior of the home. 

This disgraceful behaviour shows a 

complete disregard for Ryde’s heritage. 

We will ensure those responsible for this 

damage are held to account, not just to 

protect this house in Denistone but also to 

deter anyone from ever contemplating such 

an act and such a serious breach of heritage 

legislation in Ryde ever again. 

Immediately after becoming aware of the 

damage, the City of Ryde took action in the 

Land and Environment Court seeking that 

fines be applied for breaching the interim 

heritage order, that the matter procced as 

a criminal matter, and a direction be made 

for the owner to restore the property to its 

original glory. 

In addition, Council has installed more 

barriers around the property and engaged 

security guards to ensure further damage 

cannot be inflicted on the home.

This month is Small Business Month and 

the City of Ryde is supporting a number 

of events to assist local small and 

medium-sized businesses. 

First up is the Upskilling Your Business for 

the Future on Wednesday 17 October. At this 

free event, attendees will be able to access 

free tools to grow their business, identify 

alternative ways to recruit talent and learn 

about grants available for small businesses. 

Special giveaways on the day include free 

professional ‘pitch your business’ videos for 

three lucky winners. 

Following that is our Get Connected – 

Big Ideas for Small Business event on 

Wednesday 24 October. Hear from some 

of the sharpest minds in business and learn 

how to grow a business in the digital era 

and better manage cash challenges in the

Old Coles site could become 

new Lane Cove theatre 

LANE COVE’s old Coles supermarket on Burns Bay Road could become a stunning new home for 

the Lane Cove Theatre. 

The former supermarket 

site is linked to a development 

application on council 

owned land behind it 

and a voluntary planning 

agreement could see the 

former supermarket shopfront 

- and space below it 

- available for community 

use. 

“Lane Cove Council 

owns the land behind that 

site and a developer is interested 

in purchasing that 

land and has proposed 

a public car park,” Lane 

Cove Mayor Pam Palmer 

said. 

“We’ve been looking to 

see if people are happy 

with this proposed planning 

agreement and we 

have put the idea out for 

community consultation 

on the Have Your Say section 

on our website.” 

Mayor Palmer stressed 

that this is not linked to 

the new Coles site as part 

of the multi million dollar 

Rosenthal project behind 

the Lane Cove Plaza. 

“It is only for the old supermarket 

site on Burns 

Bay Road and we haven’t 

got any plans yet for the 

new Rosenthal project 

space.” 

The Mayor has welcomed 

a proposal from the 

Lane Cove Theatre to turn 

the former Coles site into 

a dazzling new performing 

arts space. 

“I’ve had responses from 

a number of community 

groups about the site and 

a performance space is 

something we would definately 

consider,” she said. 

“It is not a large space, 

with two floors and a street 

front, but I’m excited about 

it and the theatre proposal 

sounds reasonable.”

Lochie Beh has urged 

Lane Cove residents to get 

behind the performing arts 

space proposal. 

“The options in Lane 

Cove for a performing arts 

space are dwindling but 

we have one last opportunity,” 

he said. 

“Along with the rest 

of the local performing 

arts community, we have 

been working with council 

for many years to find a 

space in Lane Cove that 

would lend itself to a multipurpose 

performing arts 

space. 

“This is our chance and 

we encourage everyone 

to write a submission to 

Council supporting the 

proposal to use the community 

space in the new 

Coles development as a 

multi-purpose performing 

arts space.” 

The deadline for submissions 

is Friday 2 November 

2018.

A HEAD on crash on Victoria 

Road Gladesville last 

Sunday night has left a family 

of six hurt and a young 

driver fighting for life.

The crash involved a Suburu 

Impreza and a Toyota Hiace 

minivan which collided at the 

intersection of Victoria Road 

and Sulter Street in Gladesville 

around 11.30 pm. 

A 44-year-old man and 44-yearold 

woman, along with three 

children – two boys 16 and 17 

and a girl, 13 - were rushed to 

the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, 

the Royal North Shore 

Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred 

Hospital and a reported to be in 

a serious but stable condition. 

The 60-year-old driver of the 

Toyota is serious condition with 

a fractured sternum and ankle. 

The 25-year-old driver of the 

Suburu was trapped in his car for 

about 45 minutes, while crews 

rescued him and he was rushed 

to hospital in a critical condition 

with internal injuries. 

“It appears the wet road surfaces 

have contributed to this 

very serious accident, there’s 

substantial damage to both vehicles 

and we’re reminding people 

to slow down,” said Ambulance 

Inspector Jordan Emery.

playground and police 

have described the circumstances 

as suspicious. 

The area was sealed 

off by police with forensic 

officers searching

was collared and may 

have been dragged 

through bushland.

Multi million dollar road works 

to support 5,000 new residents

thousand new homes in North Ryde were recently 

opened by Lane Cove MP and Minister 

for Planning Anthony Roberts. 

The $15 million works 

feature the widening and 

upgrade of Delhi Road 

between the Hills M2 and 

Lane Cove National Park 

and will serve to the 2,700 

new homes that are part of 

the Lachlan’s Line project. 

“The works were undertaken 

by Landcom on behalf 

of Roads and Maritime 

Services and are part of a 

$17 million commitment to 

provide traffic upgrades in 

North Ryde to support the 

estimated 5,000 new Lachlan’s 

Line residents,” Mr 

Roberts said 

“Now all commuters can 

now enjoy an easier journey 

through North Ryde 

and to improve traffic flow 

an additional eastbound 

lane was constructed 

along a 950 metre section 

of the road.” 

Other works included relocating 

overhead electrical 

and telecommunication 

lines underground, repositioning 

bus stops, traffic 

signal upgrades, and new 

footpaths. 

Landscaping was included 

in the project alongside 

bush regeneration in Lane 

Cove National Park. 

“This upgrade will make 

it easier for Lachlan’s Line 

residents, visitors and Sydney 

commuters to travel to 

and from the Macquarie 

Park precinct and onto the 

M2 motorway,” Mr Roberts 

said. 

“Sustainable development 

also means providing 

vital infrastructure, 

and Landcom has made a 

commitment to provide essential 

services for the Lachlan’s 

Line development.” 

Mr Roberts said the road 

widening was the latest 

improvement works undertaken 

by Landcom, following 

the upgrade of the 

intersection of Wicks Road 

and Waterloo Road with 

new traffic lights, drainage, 

footpaths and landscaping 

in 2014. 

“The next important infrastructure 

to be constructed 

as part of the Lachlan’s 

Line project will be 

a $40 million landmark pedestrian 

and cycle bridge 

in North Ryde,” he said. 

“The bridge will provide 

safe and convenient access 

for pedestrians and 

cyclists as they travel between 

Lachlan’s Line, the 

North Ryde Railway Station 

and jobs in Macquarie 

Park. 

“Subject to approvals, 

work on the pedestrian 

bridge is expected to commence 

later this year and 

finish in 2019.” 

The Delhi Road upgrade 

has been completed ahead 

of bus services commencing 

as part of Transport 

for NSW’s temporary 

closure of the Epping to 

Chatswood rail line. 

The work was undertaken 

by Ward Civil and Environmental 

Engineering at 

Macquarie Park.

service has started 

Stations between Epping and Chatswood 

are now closed. 

Station Link Bus Services 

Train services between Epping and Chatswood have been 

replaced with Station Link, a new high frequency, turn-upand-go, 

bus service. There are seven different Station Link 

routes that connect customers from station to station. Staff 

will be there to help you get to where you need to go. 

Opal 

You will need a valid Opal card to travel on Station Link and 

charges are the same as a standard train fare. Download 

the Opal Travel app so you can top up wherever you are. 

Train and Bus Service Adjustments 

An additional 350 weekly bus services have been introduced 

to existing routes in Macquarie Park, Lane Cove and Epping. 

There have also been some adjustments to train services, 

including more express services on the T1 Northern Line to 

Central via Strathfield.

“It had to fit all the

and patients,” they

“We were also faced 

with some interesting 

features on Mars itself, 

such as where do you 

go on Mars when you 

need to recharge your 

i-pad.” 

The Mars Medical 

Centre’s corporate colour 

is red and the students 

think School Principal 

Mr Peter Watkins 

would be an ideal person 

to be put in charge 

of it. 

“He is a good leader 

and teaches us how to 

work as a team,” they 

said. 

Mr Alexander started 

the competition last 

year to promote the 

study of science, technology, 

engineering and 

mathematics (STEM). 

“Partnering with innovative 

biomedical device 

creators Medtronic 

and then this year also 

with the Re-Engineering 

Australia Foundation, 

the competition has 

evolved into one of the 

premier STEM competitions 

available in Sydney,” 

he said. 

The Medtronic team 

donated the exhibition 

space at their headquarters 

in Macquarie 

Park, lunch for everyone, 

and the prizes. 

They also made their 

research, development, 

biomedical devices 

and staff available to 

the students to investigate 

and ask questions 

throughout the day and 

inspiring them to seek 

careers in the STEM 

fields of the future.

one wish. 

She only made it to

Sadako’s story is 

now synonymous with 

peace and is a symbol 

of innocence for the 

children and victims of 

the war. 

At Eden Gardens this 

year they have an art 

installation as part of 

Eden Unearthed that 

is celebrating the life of 

Sadako and the legacy 

of Peace which she has 

made in the world. 

They hope to add to 

this installation with 

cranes from the local 

community, especially 

schools, and will 

then send them with 

your name onto the 

Peace Memorial Park 

in Hiroshima, where 

they’ll be added to 

the official register for 

posterity. 

These paper cranes 

come originally from 

the ancient Japanese 

tradition of origami 

or paper folding, but 

today they are known 

as a symbol of peace. 

They are folded as a 

wish for peace in many 

countries around the 

world. 

Eden Gardens would 

like to encourage 

students to make 

the paper cranes for 

Remembrance Day 

this year on Sunday 

November 11, which is 

the also World Origami 

Day and the centenary 

of Armistice Day. 

They’ll then add them 

to the installation at 

Eden Unearthed. 

Students can do this 

at school, or during 

the school holidays 

(10:30am, October 

11) by attending a 

FREE workshop, or 

on Remembrance Day 

itself at Eden Gardens.

Shirley’s traumatic story 

SHIRLEY* is an active grandmother, caring for her twin grand daughters two days a 

week. 

She enjoys cooking, 

quilting and her swimming 

group. 

Three years ago she 

noticed a lump in her 

left breast and sought 

advice from her GP. 

This visit was followed 

by a rollercoaster 

of medical appointments 

and the sudden 

devastating news that 

she had breast cancer. 

Over the next six 

months Shirley underwent 

surgery, chemotherapy 

and radiotherapy. 

She recovered well 

and was soon able to 

resume her regular activities, 

pleased that 

this traumatic period 

was behind her. 

Six months ago 

though, she became 

aware of a feeling of 

heaviness in her left

buildup of lymph fluid 

in the tissues of the 

body due to a deficiency 

of the lymph transport 

system which 

in Shirley’s case was 

caused by her breast 

cancer treatment, and 

usually results in the 

swelling of a limb. 

It is not curable but 

it can be reduced and 

managed with appropriate 

intervention. 

Thankfully Shirley’s 

daughter is a physiotherapist 

and encouraged 

her to seek 

treatment.

Never under estimate power of a good sleep 

TROUBLE sleeping? 

Insomnia is easier to 

treat than you think. 

Your body knows 

how to sleep, just as 

it knows how to keep 

your heart pumping 

and your lungs 

breathing. 

Most of the time, 

if your natural sleep 

pattern has been 

disturbed, your body 

will get back into its 

natural rhythm of 

sleeping and waking 

- if you give it half a 

chance - and importantly 

if you stop worrying

her lymphoedema 

therapist for lymphatic 

drainage massage and 

exercises and was 

measured for a compression 

sleeve. 

She was taught how 

to self massage at 

home and completes 

her exercise program 

and wears her sleeve 

daily. 

Shirley’s arm feels 

This of course, is 

much easier said 

than done – especially 

for those people 

with chronic sleep 

problems, such as 

obstructive sleep apnea 

(OSA). 

This condition, 

whereby the muscles 

in the throat relax and 

briefly close off the 

throat and air supply, 

will often cause the 

sufferer to lose airflow 

for seconds or 

minutes many times a 

night, and to awaken 

often gasping for air. 

Recent research 

has found that up to 

Sleep tips 

If you have trouble falling asleep – don’t go to 

bed until you FEEL sleepy. 

BUT – always get up at the same time each 

morning. 

If you don’t go to sleep within 15 minutes – get 

up and try again later. 

Don’t nap during the day. Or restrict naps to 

less than 20 minutes. 

Get natural sunlight early in the day to re-set 

your body’s natural rhythms, so that your body 

will feel more sleepy at bedtime. 

If you stay in bed 10 hours, but only sleep for 

6 hours – then it can help to restrict yourself to 

being in bed only 6 hours in total. If you do this 

for up to a week, you will usually start to fall 

asleep much faster. If not, check with your doctor 

or psychologist.

Poor sleep will not shorten your life span. It just

Rotarian Liam survives Lombok Quakes 

ON August 5 a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Indonesian holiday hub of Lombok and surrounding 

islands. 

Support needy by donating food 

TO coincide with 2018 Anti-Poverty Week (October 14-20), Sydney Community 

Services are urging the local community to support people in need 

by donating food. 

Sydney Community Services 

started providing 

food for people in need 

more than five decades 

ago. 

This is one of the many 

services they provide to 

local residents and because 

it no longer receives 

government funding they 

look to the kindness and 

support of local communities. 

SCS are appealing to the 

community to drop nonperishable 

food items off 

from Monday to Friday at

This followed a catastrophic 

tremor just one 

week earlier on July 29, 

which killed 16 people. 

Former long time Ryde 

resident Liam O’Brien - a 

member of Rotary Club 

of Brookvale - was travelling 

alone on nearby Gilli 

Trawangan, when the big 

quake hit. 

A Tsunami Warning was 

issued and Liam ran for 

the highest ground he 

could find. 

Thankfully no tsunami 

eventuated, but before 

sunrise there were two 

more earthquakes and 

over 120 aftershocks. 

Liam was among thousands 

of people stranded 

on Gilli Trawangan. As 

they came down from 

the high ground, the extent 

of the destruction 

became increasingly evident. 

Whole villages had 

collapsed and locals desperate 

to feed surviving 

families had started looting 

shops. 

In scenes that have been 

described as ‘Dunkirklike’, 

thousands of panicked 

tourists were part 

of a mad scramble to 

board boats of all sizes 

to escape Gilli Trawangan 

before more tremors hit. 

Amid utter chaos, only the 

pre-paid larger fast boats 

went directly to Bali, leaving 

Liam and thousands of 

others behind. 

Liam was evacuated the 

next afternoon to Bangsal 

Harbour in Lombok, then 

travelled by bus south to 

Lembar and eventually by 

slow ferry back to Bali. 

He landed in Padang 

Bai, Bali at around 2:30am 

on August 7. Eventually, 

he made it safely home to 

the northern beaches. 

Since the major earthquake 

on August 5, more 

than 1,000 aftershocks 

have now been felt across 

the islands, right through 

to neighbouring Bali. 

On August 19, Lombok 

was struck again with a 

quake measuring 6.3 that 

caused severe landslides 

and more destruction. At 

least 80% of all structures 

in North Lombok have 

been either damaged or 

destroyed. 

At time of writing, the 

death toll now stands 

at 560 and rising. 7,000 

more have been injured 

and 74,000 homes have 

been damaged or destroyed. 

Over 430,000 people 

have been left homeless, 

hungry and thirsty by this 

disaster. 

Understandably traumatised 

by his experience 

Liam now feels compelled 

to assist the hundreds of 

thousands of Indonesians 

affected by this devastation. 

“I am so grateful to be 

home as so many people 

have lost so much. I’ve 

made it a personal goal to 

raise as much money as I 

can to help the people of 

Lombok and the Gilli Islands,” 

said Liam. 

Rotary Club of Brookvale 

has offered its help, setting 

up a special bank account 

to receive donations to 

provide immediate basic 

humanitarian support including 

clean water, food 

and emergency shelter. 

So far Liam has raised 

over $3000, including 

$828 donated by locals at 

the Finish Festival of Pub- 

2Pub Charity Fun Run. 

The first $1,000 of that 

amount has been received 

by the team that was directly 

involved in assisting 

Liam and his fellow travellers 

after the quake struck. 

These people remain on 

the ground in Lombok, 

now helping people in remote 

villages, cut off from 

the rest of the island. 

Rotary is ensuring that 

100 per cent of any money 

donated gets directly 

to those people who most 

need it in Lombok and the 

Gilli Islands. 

“Just $5 buys 8 x 3.5 litre 

jugs of clean water to distribute 

over there,” says 

Liam. “So a $25 donation 

will buy 40 jugs!”

Centenary of WW1 1914 - 1918 

100 Years ago this week... 

One hundred years ago this week, 

Australian and other Commonwealth 

armies swept 560 kilometers 

through Palestine to achieve a stunning 

victory over Turkey. 

The epic breakthrough 

featured the Australian 

Light Horse cavalry and 

saw the destruction of 

three Ottoman armies 

during the Battle of 

Sharon, the Battle of 

Nablus and the Third 

Transjordan attack. 

The Syrian capital 

Damascus had fallen to 

Allied troops on October 

1 and Aleppo was 

captured later - during 

the brilliant pursuit - 

before the Ottoman 

Empire agreed to the 

Armistice of Mudros on 


For Australia, the 

brilliant victory marked 

the climax of a campaign 

against the Turks 

that began with the 

tragic assault on Gallipoli 

but the English 

newspapers regarded 

the final defeat of Turkey 

as a waste of precious 

resources which 

would be better spent 

on the Western Front. 

The final push against 

Syria featured Australian 

warplanes and 

some historians note 

that this was the first 

major victory of air 

power over land army 

because the planes 

bombed the fleeing columns 

of Turks and 

within weeks the routed 

Ottoman army in Palestine 

ceased to exist as a 

military force. 

The most significant 

aspect of the pursuit 

was the stunning 

advance of the Australian 

Light Horse cavalry 

Ṫhe Turks had not 

expected the rapid cavalry 

advance because of 

a shortage of water for 

the horses but an Australian 

invention called 

the Spear Point enabled 

mounted units to drill 

deeply into water holes 

to provide enough fresh 

water for their mounts. 

Of all the actions in 

the final victory over 

the Turks, it was the 

Australian cavalry 

action at Beersheba on 

October 31 in 1917 that 

has passed into legend. 

A great victory for 

Australian troops 

It has been called 

“Australia’s first big 

achievement on the 

world stage” and historian 

Jonathan 

King has argued that 

the Battle of Beersheba 

should be the cornerstone 

of our Australia 

identity, replacing 

Gallipoli. 

“Gallipoli was a 

British-led defeat and 

Beersheba was an 

Australian-led victory.”

Heritage home gutted after TWT story

HOURS of The Weekly Times revealing the plight 

of a famous historic home in Denistone it has been trashed. 

Last week’s edition 

published an exclusive 

article on how local residents 

- backed by City 

of Ryde Mayor Jerome 

Laxale - are fighting to 

save the cottage at 68 

Denistone Road from a 

possible development 

application. 

The story highlighted 

the cottage’s pristine 

condition and how it 

preserved a World War 

One heritage, both inside 

and out. 

Days later this happened 

.. 

“Council staff were 

alerted to what sounded 

like jackhammers 

being used at 68 Denistone 

Road on Wednesday,” 

Mayor Laxale 

said. 

“Council Rangers and 

the Heritage Officer 

attended the site immediately, 

where they 

observed extensive 

damage to the house’s 

interior, ceilings and 

windows with a fire 

place also removed. 

“ This is despite barricades 

being placed 

around the property 

and regular patrols 

being conducted by 

Council.” 

He alleged the damage 

had been deliberately 

caused by builders. 

“The City of Ryde is 

seeking an immediate 

injunction in the Land 

and Environment Court 

after it emerged that 

builders caused the 

extensive damage, just 

days after Council had 

placed an interim heritage 

order on the property,” 

he said. 

The City of Ryde has 

now launched legal action 

in the Land and 

Environment Court 

in which Council demands 

an immediate 

injunction to protect 

the site from further 

damage under threat of 

possible imprisonment. 

“Breaches of the 

Heritage Act can lead 

to fines of up to $1.1 

million and up to six 

months imprisonment.” 

““This abhorrent behaviour 

shows a complete 

disregard for 

Ryde’s history, heritage 

and the community values.” 

The Council also 

wants to property restored 

and has installed 

additional 

barriers around the 

property backed by security 

guards. 

Signs in multiple languages 

which provide 

information on the interim 

heritage order 

have also been placed 

at the property, while 

Council will also attempt 

to place a tarpaulin 

on the house to 

protect it from water 

damage with heavy rain 

forecast over the coming 

days. 

The Mayor also assured 

the community 

that Council will take 

the toughest possible 

action against people 

who vandalise heritage. 

“We will ensure 

those responsible for 

this damage are held 

to account, not just to 

protect this house in 

Denistone but also to 

deter anyone from ever 

contemplating such an 

act and such a serious 

breach of heritage 

legislation in Ryde ever 

again. 

The City of Ryde 

placed the interim heritage 

order on the house 

in Denistone, which 

was under threat of being 

demolished and potentially 

replaced by a 

duplex and triplex. 

An interim heritage order 

is a temporary protection 

measure that 

can stop the demolition 

of a potential heritage 

item. 

It also provides Council 

with the time to further 

assess the heritage 

significance of a potential 

item and take the 

appropriate steps to list 

the item if warranted.

Crafty Manenti spins 

Tigers to victory 

EMERGING off spinner Ben Manenti (pictured) showed his 

representative credentials with another match-winning haul 

in Sydney’s stirring victory over Bankstown last Saturday 

during a rain-marred round of the NSW Premier Cricket first 

grade competition at Bankstown Oval. 

Twenty year old Manenti 

bagged 3-87 off 

a tidy 32 overs as the 

Tigers pulled off a spirited 

42 run triumph to 

remain undefeated after 

two rounds of the 2018- 

19 series. 

It was an encouraging 

performance from the capable 

all rounder - touted 

as a future NSW spinner 

- who captured an 

impressive 62 wickets for 

Sydney last summer in all 

formats at an average of 

25.76. 

Chasing the Tigers’ first 

day tally of 292, the Bankstown 

line up struggled in 

the overcast conditions 

before succumbing to 

the guile of Manenti and 

paceman Nic Bills (2-46 

off 19 overs) to be eventually 

dismissed for 250 in 

the 82nd over.

the home side with a stylish 

57 off 148 balls that 

featured eight boundaries 

before he was trapped

Tigers legends play key roles on Men of League 

Foundation’s Tackling the Drought country tour 

LEGENDARY Balmain fullback Tim Brasher and personality prop Mike Marketo 

showed they are still household names after participating in the Men of League 

Foundation’s Tackling the Drought country tour last weekend.

where they were able to 

touch base and connect 

with the men, women 

and children of drought 

stricken communities in 

regional NSW.

day sojourn.
