Torah and Haftarah with
traditional cantillation.
This year’s class begins
with Torah cantillation in
the fall and moves to Haftarah

Prayer for Beginners with
Rabbi Geffen — Shema
So many of us attend services
from time and time,
and yet often find ourselves
feeling awkward or embarrassed
when we are unable
to join in or feel that
we don’t understand what
is being said. Join Rabbi
Geffen for informative
and instructive sessions on
three fundamental Jewish
prayers. This class from
7-8:30 p.m. on Monday,
Oct. 15, is an introductory
level class and assumes
participates have little to
no prior knowledge or experience
with the prayers.

Scales & Tails Tot Shabbat
Tot Shabbat is a fun,
free celebration geared
for families with children
ages infant-6. It typically
takes place the first Friday
of each month at 5:15 p.m.
and runs about 45 minutes.
We welcome Shabbat
with music, prayer, stories,
and more, led by Rabbi
Pam. All are welcome —
grandparents, too. Dress
is casual, and costumes
are encouraged. Join the

for music, prayer, dinner
and a reptile show! This
program is free but registration

In Memoriam
Alice Miller
Former New Trier and
Loyola educator Alice E.
Miller, 90, died Jan. 6 in
Lincolnshire. She was the
beloved and devoted mother
of Maurice, Michelle
(Frederick) Baird, Merrill
and Merrick (Sue) Miller
and cherished and loving
grandmother of Nathaniel,
Jonah and Caleb Miller.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, Earl and Esther
Woolever, by siblings,
Virginia, Frank, Russell and
Earl Jr. and by her former
husband, Ellard Miller. She
was born in Williamson,
Iowa on Aug. 27, 1927 and
was formerly of Deerfield
and Northbrook, living in
Lincolnshire for the past
seven years. She received
a bachelor’s degree in commerce
from the University
of Iowa and a master’s degree
in education from
Western Illinois University.
Alice taught business classes
at Deerfield, Highland
Park and New Trier High
Schools and was a guidance
counselor at Marillac
High School in Northfield
and Loyola Academy in
Wilmette, where she finished
her career. She was
a devoted member of the
Baha’i Communities of
Deerfield, Northbrook and
Lincolnshire. A memorial
service was held Saturday,
Oct. 6 at the Baha’i House
of Worship, Foundation
Hall (Lower Level), 100
Linden Ave., Wilmette, IL.
Interment was held at Vernon
Cemetery in Lincolnshire.

Thomas Richardson
Thomas Joe Richardson,
69, the former Glencoe
Park district executive
director, died Aug. 21 in
Connecticut after a long
struggle with Alzheimer’s.
He is survived by his
wife Donna Richardson
(Meyer). He was father
to Kristi (Keith) Conley
and Kara (Brian) Lehrer,
grandfather to Dylan and
Aliza Lehrer and Alyssa
and Kelsey Conley, brother
to Debby, Tim (Sharon)
Richardson. He is
preceded in death by his
parents, Thomas and Nell
Richardson and his sister,
Jill. Richardson spent
most of his career in Glencoe
and Glenview as the
executive director of their
park districts. He loved his
job and playing golf. But
more than that, he loved
his family and spending
time together. There was
a celebration of life at the
Lakeview Rooms in Park
Center, Glenview Oct. 7.
Memorial donations may
be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association.
Lawrence Thalmann
Jr.
Lawrence J.
Thalmann Jr., 88, a New
Trier graduate, died Oct.
1. Born in Wilmette on
the Fourth of July in 1930.
Thalmann attended New
Trier High School and
Bradley University. He
served in the U.S. Navy
during the Korean War.
Thalmann had an adventurous
spirit and was an
avid sailor. He even made a
trans-Atlantic crossing on a
40 foot sailboat. He was the
beloved husband of the late
Margret nee Goedereis and
the late Marion nee Kessler;
loving father of Lawrence
III (Amy) and Mark
(Becky) Thalmann; proud
grandfather of Lawson,
Carleigh and Jack and Cooper
and Grace Thalmann;
dear brother of Diane (the
late Roger) Stanton. Visitation
was Thursday, Oct.
4. A funeral service was
Friday, Oct. 5 at Donnellan
Family Funeral Home,
10045 Skokie Boulevard at
Old Orchard Road, Skokie,
IL 60077. In lieu of flowers
