from puzzle feeders to keep his mind stimulated
Laird placed on
administrative leave at
North Shore Academy
Laird was in his second
year teaching at North
Shore Academy in Highland
Park until Sept. 18,
when Glenview police notified
the Northern Suburban
Special Education District
of their ongoing criminal
investigation, Superintendent
Kurt Schneider said in
a statement on Oct. 3.
The district immediately
placed Laird on administrative
leave after the notification,
Schneider said.
Laird is no longer listed
on the school’s online staff
directory.
NSSED administrators
will recommend Laird be
fired at the district’s Oct.
10 leadership council
meeting because he did
not cooperate with the district’s
internal investigation
into the allegations,
Schneider said.
In the statement, the superintendent
said students
at North Shore Academy
elementary and middle
schools are unlikely to
have had direct contact
with Laird during their
time in the district.
“Currently, there is
no information suggesting
that any NSSED students
are involved in this
matter,” Schneider said.
“The police are investigating
the issue, and NSSED
will continue to cooperate
more phone calls.
“We suggest that parents
of NSA high school students
discuss this matter
with your child directly so
they hear from you that Mr.
Laird will not be returning
to NSA and is under investigation,”
he added.
Laird also worked as
a teacher’s aide at North
Shore Academy from 2010
to 2011 and from 2014 to
2017, according to the superintendent.
Post-Loyola Academy
career
After leaving Loyola
Academy in 2014, Laird
joined National Academic
Quiz Tournaments LLC as
a question-writer for bowl
tournaments, NAQT Chief
Financial Officer Chad
Kubicek said Oct. 3.
Laird worked for the
company for about nine
months, from Sept. 24,
2014, until the summer of
2015. He did not have direct
contact with children
Glencoe Police Department
headquarters in Glencoe. Individuals
named in these reports
are considered innocent
of all charges until proven
guilty in a court of law.
in his role at NAQT, Kubicek
said.
When asked if NAQT
would notify schools, parents
or students that participated
in bowl competitions
during Laird’s time
with the company about
the criminal investigation,
Kubicek was unclear about
the company’s next steps.
“I will put that to the
people that are in charge
of that,” Kubicek said,
declining to comment further.
Laird served as an assistant
coach during the
2016-17 season for the
quizbowl team at Adlai E.
Stevenson High School in
Lincolnshire, according to
the Quizbowl Wiki page.
McGrath and Heintz
encouraged anyone with
information that could be
to contact Glenview
