LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim 

League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided 

to launch a countrywide protest 

against the arrest of party president 

and Opposition Leader in the National 

Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif by the 

National Accountability Bureau 

(NAB). 

Shehbaz was arrested last week by 

the anti-corruption watchdog for influencing 

a transfer of contracts in the 

Ashiana Housing Scheme scam. A day 

after, NAB obtained a 10-day physical 

remand of the PML-N president from 

an accountability court. 

Speaking after a Central Executive 

Committee (CEC) meeting of the 

PML-N, chaired by its supremo 

Nawaz Sharif on Monday, MNA Rana 

Sanaullah gave a deadline to the government 

to call sessions of the national 

and Punjab assemblies on today 

(Tuesday) to discuss Shehbaz’s arrest, 

failing which protest demonstrations 

will be staged outside the two assemblies 

on Wednesday. 

He added that if the party’s 

demands were not met then the protest 

would spread out on roads across the 

country. 

“The truth is that the said contract 

was cancelled on the recommendation 

of the then provincial finance secretary,” 

Sanaullah claimed. “The actual 

reason behind Shehbaz’s arrest was to 

carry out political victimisation to 

influence the outcome of the October 

14 by-polls,” he further claimed.

SC reserves verdict on Asia

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday reserved its verdict on an appeal 

of a Christian woman challenging the death sentence awarded to her for blasphemy. 

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, reserved the verdict 

after hearing arguments from her counsel. 

The chief justice said the delay was “for reasons to be recorded later”, and told 

media they could not publish comments on the hugely inflammatory case, which has 

incited violence in the past. Asia Bibi, a mother of five, has been on death row since 

2010, when Pope Benedict XVI joined in international calls for her release. 

In 2015 her daughter met with Pope Francis, who as the head of the Catholic 

Church offered prayers for her mother.

More dengue cases in Karachi 

KARACHI: At least 12 

more dengue fever cases 

were reported across the 

city in a week, taking the 

reported cases’ toll to 944 

in the city since 1st 

January 2018. 

As per weekly report 

issued by Prevention and 

Control Program for 

Dengue in Sindh, as many 

as 12 new dengue fever 

cases were recorded 

throughout the Karachi 

city in a week. No new 

case was reported from 

others districts of the 

province. 

In October, a total 16 

dengue positive cases were 

reported from Karachi city. 

This year, a total 999 

dengue cases were surfaced 

across the province 

out of them 944 in Karachi 

and 55 from rest of 

province. Five new 

dengue positive cases were 

also reported in the city on 

first day of October. 

A death was also reported 

from dengue in Karachi 

city this year so far.

He was forced to beg 

while standing on his 

knees and holding the feet 

of the clerk, after that viral 

of photo and video in 

social media,

China scratchy if Saudi 

in Gwadar (CPEC)

Gwadar has the backing 

of the world's 

economic leader. 

The city's strategically 

located deep-sea port is 

ready to offer riches of the 

Silk Route to those who 

wish to align with the 

Middle Kingdom. For global 

trade's front-runners who are on 

the lookout for the next big thing, Gwadar 

is it.At the center of three civilizations lies 

a city that came to prominence after China 

announced the revival of its ancient silk 

route under the Belt and Road Initiative 

(BRI). Gwadar, a deep-sea port in southern 

Pakistan is offering an opportunity for the 

Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia to 

re-establish their trading routes through 

the new global overture. 

A delegation of officials from Saudi 

Arabia visited the Pakistani seaport of 

Gwadar to discuss the possibility of investments 

in a giant oil refinery project. 

Islamabad has expressed hopes that by 

building domestic refining capacity, financially-challenged 

Pakistan can reduce its 

fuel costs by importing oil rather than finished 

petroleum products. 

Gwadar borders Iran's Sistan- 

Baluchestan province, which is home to 

anti-Iranian militants subscribing to Saudi 

Arabia's Wahhabist sect of Sunni Islam. A 

Saudi presence across the border from 

these anti-government groups could be 

undesirable for leadership in 

Tehran.Provincial governor Mir Abdul 

QuddusBizenjo also downplayed the project's 

potential for friction with Iran, Saudi 

Arabia's main regional rival. In comments 

to media, Bizenjo emphasized the "brotherly 

relations between Pakistan and Iran," 

which have always "stood united in difficult 

times." 

Desperate for funding to fend off a 

financial crisis fuelled in part by mounting 

debt to China, Pakistan is playing a complicated 

game of poker that could hand 

Saudi Arabia a strategic victory in its bitter 

feud with Iran at the People’s Republic’s 

expense. 

The Pakistani moves threaten a key leg 

of the USD60 billion plus Chinese investment 

in the China Pakistan Economic 

Corridor (CPEC), a crown jewel of 

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and 

Road initiative. 

They also could jeopardize Chinese 

hopes to create a second overland route to 

Iran, a key node in China’s transportation 

links to Europe. Finally, they grant Saudi 

Arabia a prominent place in the Chinesefunded 

port of Gwadar that would significantly 

weaken Iran’s ability to compete 

with its Indian-backed seaport of 

Chabahar. 

Taken together, the moves risk dragging 

not only Pakistan but also China into the 

all but open war between Saudi Arabia and 

Iran. It will create problems and provoke 

sectarianism and Extremism as Saudi 

regime backing and funding in the region 

already to disturb Iran 

Pakistan’s first move became evident in 

early September with the government’s 

failure to authorize disbursements for road 

projects, already hit by delays in Chinese 

approvals, that are part of CPEC’s Western 

route, linking the province of Baluchistan 

with the troubled region of Xinjiang in 

north-western China. 

In doing so, Pakistan implicitly targeted 

a key Chinese driver for CPEC: the pacification 

of Xinjiang’s Turkic Muslim population 

through a combination of economic 

development enhanced by trade and economic 

activity flowing through CPEC as 

well as brutal repression and mass re-education. 

The combination of Pakistani and 

Chinese delays “has virtually brought 

progress work on the Western route to a 

standstill,” a Western diplomat in the 

Pakistani capital of Islamabad said. 

“Pakistan is a poor country that cannot 

afford (the) huge burden of the loans…. 

CPEC is like the backbone for Pakistan, 

but our eyes and ears are open,” Mr. 

Rashid Railway Minister said. 

PTI criticism included denouncing 

Chinese-funded mass transit projects in 

three cities in Punjab as a squandering of 

funds that could have better been invested 

in social spending. PTI activists suggested 

that the projects had involved corrupt practices. 

Pakistan’s final move was to invite 

Saudi Arabia to build a refinery in Gwadar 

and invest in Baluchistan mining. Chinese 

questioning of Pakistan’s move was evident 

when the Pakistani government 

backed off suggestions that Saudi Arabia 

would become part of CPEC. 

Senior Saudi officials last week visited 

Islamabad and Gwadar to discuss the deal 

that would also involve deferred payments 

on Saudi oil supplies to Pakistan and create 

a strategic oil reserve close to Iran’s border. 

"The incumbent government is bringing 

Saudi Arabia closer to Gwadar. In other 

words, the hardline Sunni-Wahhabi state 

would be closer than ever to the Iranian 

border. This is likely to infuriate Tehran," 

said Baloch politician and former Pakistani 

ports and shipping minister Mir Hasil 

Khan Bizenjo. 

Pakistan’s game of poker amounts to a 

risky gamble that serves Pakistani and 

Saudi purposes, puts China whose prestige 

and treasure are on the line in a difficult 

spot, could perilously spark tension along 

the Pakistan-Iran border, and is likely to 

provoke Iranian counter moves. It also 

risks putting Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and 

Iran, who depend on China economically 

in different ways, in an awkward position. 

A refinery and strategic oil reserve in 

Gwadar would serve Saudi Arabia’s goal of 

preventing Chabahar, the Indian-backed 

Iranian port, from emerging as a powerful 

Arabian Sea hub at a time that the United 

States is imposing sanctions designed to 

choke off Iranian oil exports. 

A Saudi think tank, the International 

Institute for Iranian Studies, previously 

known as the Arabian Gulf Centre for 

Iranian Studies (AGCIS) that is believed to 

be backed by Saudi Crown Prince 

Mohammed bin Salman, argued last year in 

a study that Chabahar posed “a direct 

threat to the Arab Gulf states” that called 

for “immediate counter measures.”

Husseinbor, an Iranian political researcher 

of Baloch origin, the study warned that 

Chabahar would enable Iran to increase its 

oil market share in India at the expense of 

Saudi Arabia, raise foreign investment in 

the Islamic republic, increase government 

revenues, and allow Iran to project power 

in the Gulf and the Indian Ocean. 

Mr. Husseinbor suggested that Saudi 

support for a low-level Baloch insurgency 

in Iran could serve as a countermeasure. 

“Saudis could persuade Pakistan to soften 

its opposition to any potential Saudi support 

for the Iranian Baluch... The Arab- 

Baluch alliance is deeply rooted in the history 

of the Gulf region and their opposition 

to Persian domination,” Mr. Husseinbor 

said. 

Noting the vast expanses of Iran’s Sistan 

and Baluchestan Province, Mr. Husseinbor 

went on to say that “it would be a formidable 

challenge, if not impossible, for the 

Iranian government to protect such long 

distances and secure Chabahar in the face 

of widespread Baluch opposition, particularly 

if this opposition is supported by 

Iran’s regional adversaries and world powers.” 

Saudi militants reported at the time the 

study was published that funds from the 

kingdom were flowing into anti-Shiite, 

anti-Iranian Sunni Muslim ultra-conservative 

madrassas or religious seminaries in 

Balochistan. 

US President Donald J. Trump’s national 

security advisor, John Bolton, last year 

before assuming office, drafted at the 

request of Mr. Trump’s then strategic advisor, 

Steve Bannon, a plan that envisioned 

US support “for the democratic Iranian 

opposition,” including in Balochistan and 

Iran’s Sistan and Balochistan province. 

All of this does not bode well for CPEC. 

China may be able to accommodate 

Pakistan by improving commercial terms 

for CPEC-related projects and Pakistani 

debt as well as easing Pakistani access to 

the Chinese market. China, however, is 

likely to find it far more difficult to prevent 

the Saudi-Iranian rivalry from spinning 

out of control in its backyard. It is 

international conspiracy against China , 

Iran and Pakistan if Saudi enter in 

Gwadar this regional will be more concerned 

and CPEC and Gwadar port and 

other projects relating to this in this area 

will not come outresults and benefits as 

our expectations

3.4% to below 38,000 

points after shedding more 

than 1,300 points by 

2:30pm. This was the 

largest single-day fall in the 

last 14 months, dragging 

the index down to its lowest 

level in 10 months. The last 

time market saw such a 

steep fall was in August 

2017. 

Analysts say the government’s 

inability to take key 

economic decisions, such as 

deciding on the IMF bailout 

and political tensions were 

the main reasons. First the 

government delayed the 

IMF program and then the 

opposition leader was 

arrested. 

The KSE-100 index, the 

gauge of the market’s performance, 

had already lost 

4.3% at the end of the previous

ILING OF INCOME TAX RETURNS

the recent announcement to 

extend the last date for filing 

income tax returns till 

November 30, 2018, 

advised the Federal Minister 

for Finance, Revenue & 

Economic Affairs Asad 

Umer that keeping in view 

the complications in the 

newly introduced form, the 

government should simplify 

filing procedures by immediately 

discontinuing the 

current new form and restoring 

the previous form for filing 

income tax returns as all 

taxpayers and practitioners 

are well-acquainted with 

the previous version therefore 

they will absolutely 

have no problems in easily 

submitting their returns via 

the old form. 

In his letter to Finance 

Minister, President KCCI 

added that the restoration of 

previous form, which was 

agreed upon after great deliberations, 

would surely give a 

boost to number of taxpayers 

in the Active Taxpayers List 

otherwise, the newly introduced 

form is likely to shrink 

the number of active taxpayers 

and prove counterproductive 

for all the efforts being 

made by the present government 

to enhance tax base of 

the country. 

He said that many 

KCCI’s members have been 

facing a lot of problems in 

adopting the newly introduced 

IRIS ADX software 

and are finding it difficult to 

submit their Income Tax 

Returns through this software 

for offline tax filings 

which is too technical, 

wastes a lot of time and contains 

some IT related glitches 

as well, making it an exercise 

in futility. “Prior to 

implementing such technically 

difficult and cumbersome 

forms, the FBR should 

carry out massive awareness 

campaigns by holding maximum 

number of workshops 

and seminars at all levels as 

the filers belong to all three 

segments of the society i.e. 

the upper, middle and lower 

class. 

He further informed that 

this year, FBR has made the 

businesses attributes section 

mandatory which was 

optional last year whereas it 

has been observed that the 

said attributes list is incomplete, 

leaving enough room 

for errors and misfiling 

which is likely to become a 

major cause of creating 

issues between FBR and filers. 

In this regard, Junaid 

Makda requested the FBR 

to make the attributes section 

optional as per past 

practice and it should be 

made mandatory only when 

the attributes list is completely 

accurate and comprehensive.

ISLAMABAD: In occupied Kashmir, Chairman 

Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has said that sham 

elections conducted by India in the territory are no substitute 

to the resolution of the Kashmir dispute. 

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement in Srinagar said socalled 

that elections in the territory are actually a military 

operation and a futile exercise for the people of Kashmir. 

He said that the Kashmiri people had always rejected the 

sham polls. He urged the people to stay away from sham 

local bodies and panchayat elections and observe a complete 

shutdown in protest in accordance with the programme 

already given by Joint Resistance Leadership.
