of inhumane act of college clerk
Ferozi
KARACHI: Sardar Ali
Shah Minister for education
lashed out the Saeeda
Abad’s Degree College
clerk Janib Keerio on
Monday over his maltreatment
with the girl’s father.
On account of misbehaving
of clerk in Saeed
Abad’s Degree College
with girl’s parent, he was
asked to pardon to her
father as he forced the farther
to do so.
The moment when
Keerio was in college, he
had big grandiloquence in
his personality, said Shah
Education Minister had
ordered Janib Keerio and
said, “Beg girl’s father to
say for pardon as he did
with the parent”, hence the
clerk begged her father
holding his feet, furthermore,
he was also dismissed
OPINION
China scratchy if Saudi
in Gwadar (CPEC)
Rasheed Ahmad Chughtai
Gwadar has the backing
of the world's
economic leader.
The city's strategically
located deep-sea port is
ready to offer riches of the
Silk Route to those who
wish to align with the
Middle Kingdom. For global
trade's front-runners who are on
the lookout for the next big thing, Gwadar
is it.At the center of three civilizations lies
a city that came to prominence after China
announced the revival of its ancient silk
route under the Belt and Road Initiative
(BRI). Gwadar, a deep-sea port in southern
Pakistan is offering an opportunity for the
Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia to
re-establish their trading routes through
the new global overture.
A delegation of officials from Saudi
Arabia visited the Pakistani seaport of
Gwadar to discuss the possibility of investments
in a giant oil refinery project.
Islamabad has expressed hopes that by
building domestic refining capacity, financially-challenged
Pakistan can reduce its
fuel costs by importing oil rather than finished
petroleum products.
Gwadar borders Iran's Sistan-
Baluchestan province, which is home to
anti-Iranian militants subscribing to Saudi
Arabia's Wahhabist sect of Sunni Islam. A
Saudi presence across the border from
these anti-government groups could be
undesirable for leadership in
Tehran.Provincial governor Mir Abdul
QuddusBizenjo also downplayed the project's
potential for friction with Iran, Saudi
Arabia's main regional rival. In comments
to media, Bizenjo emphasized the "brotherly
relations between Pakistan and Iran,"
which have always "stood united in difficult
times."
Desperate for funding to fend off a
financial crisis fuelled in part by mounting
debt to China, Pakistan is playing a complicated
game of poker that could hand
Saudi Arabia a strategic victory in its bitter
feud with Iran at the People’s Republic’s
expense.
The Pakistani moves threaten a key leg
of the USD60 billion plus Chinese investment
in the China Pakistan Economic
Corridor (CPEC), a crown jewel of
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and
Road initiative.
They also could jeopardize Chinese
hopes to create a second overland route to
Iran, a key node in China’s transportation
links to Europe. Finally, they grant Saudi
Arabia a prominent place in the Chinesefunded
port of Gwadar that would significantly
weaken Iran’s ability to compete
with its Indian-backed seaport of
Chabahar.
Taken together, the moves risk dragging
not only Pakistan but also China into the
all but open war between Saudi Arabia and
Iran. It will create problems and provoke
sectarianism and Extremism as Saudi
regime backing and funding in the region
already to disturb Iran
Pakistan’s first move became evident in
early September with the government’s
failure to authorize disbursements for road
projects, already hit by delays in Chinese
approvals, that are part of CPEC’s Western
route, linking the province of Baluchistan
with the troubled region of Xinjiang in
north-western China.
In doing so, Pakistan implicitly targeted
a key Chinese driver for CPEC: the pacification
of Xinjiang’s Turkic Muslim population
through a combination of economic
development enhanced by trade and economic
activity flowing through CPEC as
well as brutal repression and mass re-education.
The combination of Pakistani and
Chinese delays “has virtually brought
progress work on the Western route to a
standstill,” a Western diplomat in the
Pakistani capital of Islamabad said.
“Pakistan is a poor country that cannot
afford (the) huge burden of the loans….
CPEC is like the backbone for Pakistan,
but our eyes and ears are open,” Mr.
Rashid Railway Minister said.
PTI criticism included denouncing
Chinese-funded mass transit projects in
three cities in Punjab as a squandering of
funds that could have better been invested
in social spending. PTI activists suggested
that the projects had involved corrupt practices.
Pakistan’s final move was to invite
Saudi Arabia to build a refinery in Gwadar
and invest in Baluchistan mining. Chinese
questioning of Pakistan’s move was evident
when the Pakistani government
backed off suggestions that Saudi Arabia
would become part of CPEC.
Senior Saudi officials last week visited
Islamabad and Gwadar to discuss the deal
that would also involve deferred payments
on Saudi oil supplies to Pakistan and create
a strategic oil reserve close to Iran’s border.
"The incumbent government is bringing
Saudi Arabia closer to Gwadar. In other
words, the hardline Sunni-Wahhabi state
would be closer than ever to the Iranian
border. This is likely to infuriate Tehran,"
said Baloch politician and former Pakistani
ports and shipping minister Mir Hasil
Khan Bizenjo.
Pakistan’s game of poker amounts to a
risky gamble that serves Pakistani and
Saudi purposes, puts China whose prestige
and treasure are on the line in a difficult
spot, could perilously spark tension along
the Pakistan-Iran border, and is likely to
provoke Iranian counter moves. It also
risks putting Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and
Iran, who depend on China economically
in different ways, in an awkward position.
A refinery and strategic oil reserve in
Gwadar would serve Saudi Arabia’s goal of
preventing Chabahar, the Indian-backed
Iranian port, from emerging as a powerful
Arabian Sea hub at a time that the United
States is imposing sanctions designed to
choke off Iranian oil exports.
A Saudi think tank, the International
Institute for Iranian Studies, previously
known as the Arabian Gulf Centre for
Iranian Studies (AGCIS) that is believed to
be backed by Saudi Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman, argued last year in
a study that Chabahar posed “a direct
threat to the Arab Gulf states” that called
for “immediate counter measures.”
Written by Mohammed Hassan
Husseinbor, an Iranian political researcher
of Baloch origin, the study warned that
Chabahar would enable Iran to increase its
oil market share in India at the expense of
Saudi Arabia, raise foreign investment in
the Islamic republic, increase government
revenues, and allow Iran to project power
in the Gulf and the Indian Ocean.
Mr. Husseinbor suggested that Saudi
support for a low-level Baloch insurgency
in Iran could serve as a countermeasure.
“Saudis could persuade Pakistan to soften
its opposition to any potential Saudi support
for the Iranian Baluch... The Arab-
Baluch alliance is deeply rooted in the history
of the Gulf region and their opposition
to Persian domination,” Mr. Husseinbor
said.
Noting the vast expanses of Iran’s Sistan
and Baluchestan Province, Mr. Husseinbor
went on to say that “it would be a formidable
challenge, if not impossible, for the
Iranian government to protect such long
distances and secure Chabahar in the face
of widespread Baluch opposition, particularly
if this opposition is supported by
Iran’s regional adversaries and world powers.”
Saudi militants reported at the time the
study was published that funds from the
kingdom were flowing into anti-Shiite,
anti-Iranian Sunni Muslim ultra-conservative
madrassas or religious seminaries in
Balochistan.
US President Donald J. Trump’s national
security advisor, John Bolton, last year
before assuming office, drafted at the
request of Mr. Trump’s then strategic advisor,
Steve Bannon, a plan that envisioned
US support “for the democratic Iranian
opposition,” including in Balochistan and
Iran’s Sistan and Balochistan province.
All of this does not bode well for CPEC.
China may be able to accommodate
Pakistan by improving commercial terms
for CPEC-related projects and Pakistani
debt as well as easing Pakistani access to
the Chinese market. China, however, is
likely to find it far more difficult to prevent
the Saudi-Iranian rivalry from spinning
out of control in its backyard. It is
international conspiracy against China ,
Iran and Pakistan if Saudi enter in
Gwadar this regional will be more concerned
and CPEC and Gwadar port and
other projects relating to this in this area
will not come outresults and benefits as
Pompeo says North Korea ready to let
inspectors into missile, nuclear sites
Box office: 'Venom' launches to $80 million,
'A Star Is Born' draws $42.6 million
SEOUL: U.S. Secretary
of State Mike Pompeo said
on Monday North Korean
leader Kim Jong Un was
ready to allow international
inspectors into the North’s
nuclear and missile testing
sites, one of the main sticking
points over an earlier
denuclearization pledge.
Pompeo, who met Kim
during a short trip to
Pyongyang on Sunday, said
the inspectors would visit a
missile engine test facility
and the Punggye-ri nuclear
testing site as soon as the
two sides agree on logistics.
“There’s a lot of logistics
that will be required to execute
that,” Pompeo told a
news briefing in Seoul
before leaving for Beijing.
The top U.S. diplomat
also said both sides were
“pretty close” to agreement
on the details of a second
summit, which Kim proposed
to U.S. President
Donald Trump in a letter last
month. Trump and Kim held
an historic first summit in
Singapore in June.
“Most importantly, both
the leaders believe there’s
According to a diplomatic
Ambassador to Ankara
Waleed A. M. Elkhereiji
was summoned to the
Turkish Foreign Ministry on
Sunday.
"Deputy foreign minister
expectation of full cooperation
during the investigation
that can be made at the next
Stephen Biegun, new
U.S. nuclear envoy who was
accompanying the secretary,
said he offered on Sunday to
meet his counterpart, Vice
Foreign Minister Choe Son
and they were in discussion
Jamal Khashoggi, journalist
and regular columnist
for the Washington Post, has
been missing since he
entered the Saudi consulate
in Istanbul on Oct. 2.
Turkish police investigating
the case had said in a
statement Saturday that 15
Saudis, including several
officials, had arrived in
Istanbul on two planes and
had entered the consulate
while Khashoggi was
inside.
The Turkish police in
North Korea resisted
Washington’s demands for
irreversible steps to give up
its nuclear arsenal, including
a complete inventory of its
weapons and facilities.
He told South Korean
President Moon Jae-in on
Sunday his latest trip to
Pyongyang was “another
step forward” to denuclearization
Opposition heavy weapons
removed from Idlib
Opposition on Monday completed withdrawal of heavy
weapons from Idlib frontlines
IDLIB, Syria: The
Syrian opposition and
other anti-regime groups
on Monday completed the
withdrawal of all their
heavy weapons from Idlib
frontlines in northwestern
Syria.
According to an
Anadolu Agency correspondent
in the scene, the
forces removed heavy
weapons from Idlib deescalation
with the Syrian regime and
allied Iran-backed groups.
Earlier on Monday, an
opposition source told
Anadolu Agency that the
opposition had worked
during the past days and
throughout Sunday night to
withdraw heavy weapons,
including Grad rocket
launchers, mortars
andmedium-range missiles.
Meanwhile, Turkish
forces sent various
weapons and armored
vehicles to the demilitarized
Pope blames devil for Church divisions,
scandals, seeks angel's help
VATICAN CITY: The
devil is alive and well and
working overtime to
undermine the Roman
Catholic Church, Pope
Francis says.
In fact, the pope is so
convinced that Satan is to
blame for the sexual abuse
crisis and deep divisions
racking the Church that he
has asked Catholics around
the world to recite a special
prayer every day in
October to try to beat him
back.
“(The Church must be)
saved from the attacks of
the malign one, the great
accuser and at the same
time be made ever more
aware of its guilt, its mistakes,
and abuses committed
in the present and the
past,” Francis said in a
message on Sept. 29.
Since he was elected in
2013, Francis has made
clear that he believes the
devil to be real. In a document
in April on holiness
in the modern world,
Francis mentioned the
devil more than a dozen
times.
“We should not think of
the devil as a myth, a representation,
a symbol, a
figure of speech or an idea.
This mistake would lead us
to let down our guard, to
grow careless and end up
more vulnerable,” he
wrote in the document.
Prosecutor’s Office in
Istanbul initiated an investigation
on the day of the
incident while the consulate
also said on Twitter
that it was working in coordination
with Turkish
authorities.
Israel vows to take
in 1,000 Falasha
Jews from Ethiopia
JERUSALEM: The
Israeli government has
consented to take in some
1,000 Falasha Jews from
Ethiopia, according to a
Monday statement issued
by Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu's
office.
"As part of the decision,
[Falasha] parents will be
able to bring with them
their spouses and unmarried
children [from
Ethiopia]," the statement
read.
Israel’s Interior
Ministry, it added, would
provide all incoming
Falashas with "all the
rights typically granted to
Ethiopian immigrants”.
According to the PM’s
office, the move is based
on a 2006 government
decision calling for the
“reunification” of Falasha
families from Addis Ababa
and the city of Gondar,
where most of Ethiopia’s
Falasha community is concentrated.
close the Yongbyon nuclear
complex if Washington
takes corresponding action,
which Moon said would
include a declaration of an
end to the 1950-53 Korean
War. Pompeo declined to
comment whether there was
progress on a shutdown of
the Yongbyon site.
Moon also said the North
will “permanently dismantle”
its missile engine testing
site and launch platform in
the northwestern town of
Tongchang-ri in the presence
of experts from “concerned
countries”.
But Pyongyang failed to
keep its pledge to allow
international inspections of
its demolition of the
Punggye-ri site in May, fanning
criticism that the move
could be reversed.
In July, satellite imagery
indicated the North has
begun dismantling the
engine test site in
Tongchang-ri, but without
allowing outsiders access for
verification. And the
Stimson Centre’s 38 North
said last week that no dismantling
activity was spotted
since Aug. 3.
Some experts say that
opening the Tongchang-ri or
Punggye-ri sites for inspection
could be a goodwill gesture
but has little significance
in quickening denuclearization.
State Department
spokeswoman Heather
Nauert said in a statement
Kim had invited inspectors
to visit the Punggye-ri
nuclear test site to confirm it
had been irreversibly dismantled.
The statement did
not provide further details.
over past week
ANKARA: At least 23
PKK terrorists were "neutralized"
in counter-terrorism
operations across
Turkey over the past week,
the country’s Interior
Ministry said on Monday.
Turkish authorities
often use the word "neutralized"
in their statements
to imply that the terrorists
in question either
surrendered or were killed
or captured.
The ministry said in a
statement that a total of
2,421 anti-terror operations
were conducted
between Oct. 1 and 8.
Seven terrorists were
killed, four were captured,
while another 12 terrorists
surrendered to Turkish
security forces, the statement
said.
Security forces seized
24 hand grenades, 303
kilograms (668 pounds) of
explosive material, 45
improvised explosives, 25
long-barreled weapons and
3,048 ammunition.
LOS ANGELES: The
unlikely dynamic duo of
“Venom” and “A Star Is
fall moviegoing season
with the best October
weekend of all time in
North America.
Tom Hardy’s superhero
tale “Venom” grabbed $80
Sony and Marvel while the
Lady Gaga-starring
remake of “A Star Is Born”
earned an estimated $42.6
for Warner Bros. — well
above pre-weekend forecasts.
“Venom” smashed
the record for an October
“Gravity” by 43%.
“Venom” also dominated
BEIJING/PARIS: China
said on Monday it was investigating
former Interpol chief
and other violations, days
after French authorities said
the Chinese official had been
reported missing by his wife
opening. South Korea led
the way with $16.3 million.
“Venom” and the critically
acclaimed “A Star Is
Born” were both able to
draw effectively from
beyond their core audiences.
The strong domestic
openings pushed the weekend’s
total business to
about $174 million, or
15% above the prior mark
of $151.5 million set in
2015 when Matt Damon’s
“The Martian” opened,
according to comScore.
Adrian Smith, Sony’s
domestic distribution
chief, told Variety that the
studio was able to overcome
downbeat reviews by
putting emphasis on
“Venom’s” fun factor.
“The idea was always to
make a film that all audiences
could enjoy,” he
added.
after traveling to his home
country.
Under President Xi
Jinping, China has been
engaged in a sweeping
crackdown on official corruption.
On Sunday, Interpol,
the France-based global
Sony is hoping
“Venom” will launch a
shared universe similar to
Disney’s lucrative superhero
franchise.
“Zombieland” director
Ruben Fleischer helmed
the film, which carries a
$100 million budget.
Hardy portrays Eddie
Brock, a journalist bound
to the alien entity known
as Venom.
The fourth iteration of
“A Star Is Born,” directed
by Bradley Cooper, arrived
in theaters amid a wave of
positive buzz and an
awards campaign that’s
gained traction since its
debut at the Venice Film
Festival on Sept. 5. The
release of the soundtrack
album on Friday added to
the film’s drawing power,
according to Warner’s
Jeff Goldstein.
KSE-100 plunges over 1300 points
Bloodbath as Karachi stock makes
largest single-day drop in 14 months
KARACHI: The capital
market nosedived to a 10-
month low as political and
economic uncertainty drove
investor sentiment, leading
to panic selling, which
wiped out Rs272 billion
from the market on
Monday.
The benchmark KSE-
100 Share index plunged
3.4% to below 38,000
points after shedding more
than 1,300 points by
2:30pm. This was the
largest single-day fall in the
last 14 months, dragging
the index down to its lowest
level in 10 months. The last
time market saw such a
steep fall was in August
2017.
Analysts say the government’s
inability to take key
economic decisions, such as
deciding on the IMF bailout
and political tensions were
the main reasons. First the
government delayed the
IMF program and then the
opposition leader was
arrested.
The KSE-100 index, the
gauge of the market’s performance,
had already lost
4.3% at the end of the previous
week, losing 861
points during Friday’s session
alone as news of
Shehbaz Sharif’s arrest by
NAB reached. Monday was
the sixth straight session the
market ended in the red
zone.
In the last two weeks,
foreign investors sold
shares worth $17.8 million
and by Monday noon,
another Rs110 billion were
wiped out from the market.
The KSE-100 settled at
37,898 points when the
market closed with Rs272
billion shaved off of
Friday’s value. The last
time market traded at this
level was in December
2017.
Pakistan’s dollar
reserves fell by another
$600 million last week to
come to a critical level
($8.4 billion), that barely
covers two months of
imports. The government
China moves to boost
liquidity amid US trade war
BEIJING: China will cut
the amount of cash banks
must hold in reserve as part
of efforts to support its
economy, amid an escalating
trade war with the US.
The move will see
750bn yuan ($109bn;
£83bn) in cash injected into
the financial system.
The US is fighting a
trade war with China which
threatens the outlook for
Chinese manufacturing and
exports.
It is the fourth time the
country's central bank has
cut its reserve requirement
this year.
China's central bank said
it would cut reserve requirement
ratios by 100 basis
points from 15 October.
These are currently 15.5%
for large commercial
lenders and 13.5% for
smaller banks.
Cutting reserve requirements
frees up money for
banks to lend to each other
and consumers.
The People's Bank of
China's move will release
1.2 trillion yuan in liquidity,
with 450bn yuan of that due
to offset maturing loans -
meaning 750bn yuan will
be injected into the financial
system.
Oil drops to around $83 on expectations
Iran will maintain some exports
LONDON: Oil dropped to around $83 a
barrel on Monday, pressured by expectations
that some Iranian oil exports will keep
flowing after the U.S. re-imposes sanctions,
easing a strain on supplies.
Two companies in India, a big buyer of
Iranian oil, have ordered barrels in
November, India’s oil minister said on
Monday. The Trump administration is considering
waivers on sanctions, a U.S. government
official said on Friday.
“One way or another, it looks as though
India is going to take some Iranian crude,”
said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix, adding
that the development was helping oil to
“retrace some of the price surge we saw last
week.” Brent crude, the international
U.S. sanctions will target Iran’s crude oil
been putting pressure on governments and
“This is one of the single biggest supportive
factors for crude,” said analysts at
Iran sanctions. “Having said that, it may
LAHORE: All-out preparations
Textile, Commerce,
Industry, production and
Investment Abdul Razak
Dawood will inaugurate the
exhibition as he has been
invited to grace the occasion.
The event will offer an
opportunity to discuss
exchange of trade delegations
and bolster mutual
trade relationship and links
with foreign delegates.
has, however, been delaying
an IMF loan, which has
become unavoidable. The
government needs to shore
up the dollar reserves to pay
for imports that keep the
economy afloat and pay its
foreign loans to avoid
default.
Analysts say investors
are uncertain about the
implications of the government’s
on-going drive
against corruption, which
has now led to the arrest of
the leader of the opposition.
I S L A M A B A D :
Islamabad Chamber of
Commerce and Industry
(ICCI) has called upon the
government to take urgent
measures for business
friendly tax reforms to
broaden the tax base.
President, Islamabad
Chamber of Commerce &
Industry ,Ahmed Hassan
Moghal said that the prevailing
complex and unfair
tax system in Pakistan was a
major hurdle in expanding
the tax net, therefore, a simple
tax system with low tax
rates and low compliance
cost was the need of the
hour to enhance the tax revenue
of the country. He said
that such measures should
be taken so that taxpayers
could willingly come forward
to pay tax and ensure
voluntary compliance of tax
laws.
Today, it is politicians
tomorrow, it could be business
people, the same people
who invest in the market,
analysts say. This has
caused panic.
Last week, the PTI government
started its drive
against tax evaders, issuing
notices to more than 160
people suspected of evasion.
The government says
the number of suspects runs
into the thousands and all of
them will be targeted
through sophisticated technology
by using bank data
of non-filers who have huge
sums in their accounts.
Analysts say the government
is, perhaps, waiting
for the by-elections (to be
held later this month)
before it decides on the IMF
program. Besides this, there
are fears that the rupee will
depreciate further, which
kept investors away from
the market. They say that
once the uncertainly is over
and the government’s policies
are clear, the index will
bounce back quickly.
ICCI for business
friendly tax reforms
He said that in an effort
to widen the tax net and
ensure tax compliance
across Pakistan, government
has initiated a massive drive
for the recovery of taxes
from big and influential tax
evaders. However, he
stressed that such drive
should not create any kind
of unnecessary harassment
in the business community
and the taxpayers.
Ahmed Hassan Moughal
said that if FBR has authentic
information about any
genuine tax evading businessman,
the department
should first take the
Chamber of Commerce and
Industry of the respective
region on board so that
instead of taking any harsh
measures, genuine tax
evaders could be brought
into the tax net with mutual
efforts.
ILING OF INCOME TAX RETURNS
President KCCI for
simplifying procedures,
restoration of previous form
KARACHI: President
Karachi Chamber of
Commerce & Industry
(KCCI) Junaid Esmail
Makda, while appreciating
the recent announcement to
extend the last date for filing
income tax returns till
November 30, 2018,
advised the Federal Minister
for Finance, Revenue &
Economic Affairs Asad
Umer that keeping in view
the complications in the
newly introduced form, the
government should simplify
filing procedures by immediately
discontinuing the
current new form and restoring
the previous form for filing
income tax returns as all
taxpayers and practitioners
are well-acquainted with
the previous version therefore
they will absolutely
have no problems in easily
submitting their returns via
the old form.
In his letter to Finance
Minister, President KCCI
added that the restoration of
previous form, which was
agreed upon after great deliberations,
would surely give a
boost to number of taxpayers
in the Active Taxpayers List
otherwise, the newly introduced
form is likely to shrink
the number of active taxpayers
and prove counterproductive
for all the efforts being
made by the present government
to enhance tax base of
the country.
He said that many
KCCI’s members have been
facing a lot of problems in
adopting the newly introduced
IRIS ADX software
and are finding it difficult to
submit their Income Tax
Returns through this software
for offline tax filings
which is too technical,
wastes a lot of time and contains
some IT related glitches
as well, making it an exercise
in futility. “Prior to
implementing such technically
difficult and cumbersome
forms, the FBR should
carry out massive awareness
campaigns by holding maximum
number of workshops
and seminars at all levels as
the filers belong to all three
segments of the society i.e.
the upper, middle and lower
class.
He further informed that
this year, FBR has made the
businesses attributes section
mandatory which was
optional last year whereas it
has been observed that the
said attributes list is incomplete,
leaving enough room
for errors and misfiling
which is likely to become a
major cause of creating
issues between FBR and filers.
In this regard, Junaid
Makda requested the FBR
to make the attributes section
optional as per past
practice and it should be
made mandatory only when
the attributes list is completely
accurate and comprehensive.
The Wheel Chair
Tennis Department was
established in early 2018
to promote tennis among
the physically challenged
personnel. The camp has
been organized to improve
the playing standards of
wheel chair tennis and special
wheel chairs were
imported to facilitate the
players as a first step.
Conducting such sports
activities will not only
encourage the physically
challenged people to participate
in sports events but
also help rehabilitate them
as active members of the
society.
Proteas bowlers
move up in ODI
rankings
DUBAI: South Africa
bowlers Kagiso Rabada and
Imran Tahir have advanced
within the top-10 of the ICC
ODI Player Rankings after
their side’s 3-0 home series
triumph over Zimbabwe.
Fast bowler Rabada, who
is also ranked second in Tests,
has moved up three spots to
take sixth position after grabbing
five wickets in two
matches, while formerly topranked
leg-spinner Tahir’s
player of the series effort of
10 wickets, which included a
hat-trick in the second ODI,
has seen him progress three
places to seventh position.
South Africa fast
bowlers Andile
Phehlukwayo and Lungi
Ngidi have also made significant
gains in a series
dominated by their team,
who won the three matches
by margins of by five wickets,
140 runs and four wickets.
Phehlukwayo has moved
up nine slots to 35th position
with five wickets in the series
and Ngidi has gained 19
places to reach a career-best
60th position with four wickets
in two matches. Aiden
Markram (up 14 places to a
career-best 115th) and
Heinrich Klaasen (up 47
places to a career-high 118th)
have moved up in the list for
batsmen.
For Zimbabwe, Hamilton
Masakadza (up three places
to 64th) and Sean Williams
(up eight places to 78th) are
the main gainers among batsmen
while Tendai Chetara
(up six places to 45th) has
progressed in the list for
bowlers.
South Africa’s facile win
did not impact the ICC ODI
Team Rankings as both
teams remained on their preseries
points tally – the home
side in fourth position on 110
points and Zimbabwe in 11th
position on 53 points.
off spinner Jon Holland
before cutting him to third
man for two to complete
his century. He was finally
dismissed by Nathan Lyon,
caught behind as he tried to
cut the off-spinner, having
easily surpassed his previous
best of 76 made against
Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi
last year.
Sohail was pleased to go
on and post a big score after
regularly making several
promising starts before getting
out earlier in the year.
"I was getting out on 30-
40 runs on the tour of
England (in May-June this
year)," said Sohail. "So I
wanted to get out of that
panic situation and I am
happy that I have done that
today.
"It´s always a big pride
to score a Test hundred for
your country and I have
worked really hard to reach
this far," said Sohail, who
was sidelined for a twoyear
period with a knee
injury in 2015.
Bangladesh
takes T20I
revenge in ODI
COX’S BAZAR: Offspinner
Khadija Tul Kubra
returned with 6-20 helping
her side to bowl out Pakistan
for 94 before the
Bangladesh batters knocked
off the paltry total without
much hiccups in the one-off
one-day international here
Sheikh Kamal International
Cricket Stadium.
The fixture, on the back
of Pakistan’s 3-0 win in the
Twenty20
International series, was all
Bangladesh as Kubra scripted
a Pakistan batting collapse
in just 34.5 overs.
Fargana Hoque then scored
an 81-ball 48 as Bangladesh
went over the line in just 29
overs for the fall of four
wickets.
Kubra’s was an outstanding
achievement – the first
five-wicket haul by a
Bangladeshi woman in
ODIs, and the best ODI figures
by any Bangladeshi
bowler, man or woman,
ever. Mashrafe Mortaza’s 6-
26 against Kenya back in
August 2006 was the previous
best.
She took charge after
Lata Mondal, the right-arm
medium pacer, had sent
back Muneeba Ali after an
opening stand of 38 runs.
Ayesha Zafar was
Kubra’s first victim, and
then she sent back Nida Dar
and Umaima Sohail before
accounting for the dangerous
Javeria Khan, Pakistan’s
captain top-scoring for her
team with 29. That made it
four for her, and she finished
up with the wickets of Sidra
Nawaz and Nashra Sandhu.
MUMBAI: There’s a
wide smile plastered on
Anushka Sharma’s face
when I meet her at the
lounge at the Yash Raj
Films office. Sui Dhaaga
has been enjoying a great
run at the box office and
critics and audiences have
praised Anushka’s turn as
the meek Mamta.
In between our conversation
she suddenly asks,
“Are you from Bangalore?
I can tell from your
finds its way into most of
her answers as she candidly
talks about her career,
nepotism and why being
‘de-glam’ is no big deal.
Anushka Sharma: I feel
like that pressure is fine
because you’re seeing
them as these cine stars or
whatever at an awards
show or events like those.
Over there I’m happy to
dress up and look glamorous.
As a girl I enjoy it!
But for films, why should
actresses look glamorous?
We’re playing characters.
That’s why I find it
strange when people call
it risky. Honestly its risky
PM in his issued statement
He said that a department
will be formed in this
regard that will be an
if I’m playing someone
like Mamta and am wearing
lipstick and my hair is
in place. With each film I
do I want to transform
important part of local
