Spine tingling eh? 

That’s anicicle down 

your back. 

Or the half-knowledge that 

there’s adoorbehindyou, 

and it’s open, atinycrack, 

and possibly, although 

you can’t be sure, 

eyes are watching you from the 

darkness. 

Scary! 

We love it, but howtowrite it? 

Everyone does it differently, and 

there are no hard and fast rules, 

but there are some things that 

make all the difference. 

So you need tostart with a 

cracking character on your 

side, and, as it’s aspooky 

story, you reallywant tomake 

that character likeable. Even 

loveable. Make us care about 

them, make us worry about 

them. We’ll feel their fear if we 

can identify with them. Try it, 

make up acharacter, or maybe 

use someone you knowreally 

well. Perhaps, it’s your best 

friend –imagine an enormous 

tribe of zombies advancing on 

them. Do you feel the fear? 

Nowtry it with someone you 

don’t like very much. 

See? 

Making things real, this is really 

important. Make your character 

believable and make the threat 

real. Generallyspeaking, there 

aren’t hundreds of zombies out 

there, but, you need toconvince 

your reader that there are. 

Details are the waytodothat. 

These zombies, howdothey 

sound? Imagine that there’s one 

reallyterrifying one at the front. 

Does its breath crackle? Orhiss? 

Howdoes it smell? Like adead 

badger? Like cheese? Like 

boxes from the attic? Does it 

climb stairs? What’s it wearing? 

Every little detail increases 

the sense of unease. And 

what about the surroundings? 

Perhaps your character is hiding 

in achurchyard. How does 

the graveyard smell? Sound? 

Feel? Is the ground under the 

character’s knees stonyor 

muddy? And if it’s stony, whyis 

it stony? Earth? Bones?Agrave? 

Keep your sentences short. 

That increases the tension. 

Long sentences lull readers into 

asense of security.Try writing 

both, and then, try reading 

them aloud to yourself. Pause 

between each sentence for 

dramatic effect and you’ll let the 

listener’s imagination do some 

of the work foryou. 

Heap more danger in. This is the 

secret ofthrill! So, the zombies 

are advancing, your back is to 

the wall, you run to climb over 

it and your foot catches. You 

tug and tug, ahand reaches out 

foryou, aterrifying hand that 

reflects white in the moonlight. 

At the last second your foot 

comes free and you fall in a 

heap on the other side of the 

wall. Climbing back on your 

feet, you think you’re safe, 

but then you trip and fall, the 

zombies are over the wall 

behind you, you need torun, 

faster... 

And lastly, and possibly most 

importantly, you need tofeel 

the risk yourself. Youhave to 

imagine thatyou are in the 

situation and outside it, both 

at the same time. If you don’t 

believe your character is at risk, 

nor will your reader. 

Ideally, when you’ve finished 

writing it you should test it. 

Get afriend inaroom, in the 

dark. Give them asmall light 

to read by. Place them so that 

theyhave their back to the door, 

which is slightlyopen, 

and then watch. 

Ibet they turn round. 

Ibet they shiver. 

Ibet you’ll really 

make their 

spine tingle.

Welcome to the first half-term edition of the school year! We 

hope that now your little ones have had some time to settle in, 

they are enjoying the new experiences and positive challenges 

that this academic year has brought. Plus, now that the weather 

is cooling down we can start looking forward to firework displays, 

wrapping up in cosy jumpers, and lovely warm mugs of hot 

chocolate. 

There are so many events and activities on offer over the next 

few weeks; we hope that everyone will be able to find something 

that they’ll enjoy. We’ve got everything across the coast to the 

countryside, plus our annual Pantomime guide - make sure you 

check out Box Office so you don’t miss out! In the meantime, there

Our next magazine will be out well in time for the Christmas

Service wants everyone to remember 

bonfire night for the right reasons; with 

everyone having asafe and enjoyable 

time! 

We want people to enjoy this year’s 

Bonfire Night celebrations safely, and 

would urge people to go along to an 

organised event, where the fireworks 

are handled by professionals. 

If you plan to celebrate with 

your own firework display/bonfire, 

following the simple tips below 

should help ensure your evening is a 

success; 

Fireworks 

• Plan your firework display to make it 

safe and enjoyable. 

• Keep fireworks in aclosed box and 

use them one at atime. 

• Read and follow the instructions 

on each firework using atorch if 

necessary. 

• Light the firework at arm's length 

with ataper and stand well back. 

• Keep naked flames, including 

cigarettes, away from fireworks. 

• Never return to a fi rework once it has 

been lit. 

• Don't put fireworks in pockets and 

never throw them. 

•Direct any rocket fireworks well away 

from spectators. 

Bonfires 

• Build your bonfire downwind and 

well away from buildings, trees, 

bushes or other flammable materials. 

• Clear away grass to form acircle of 

earth around the fire. 

• Build the fire stack so than it 

collapses inward when burning. 

• Watch for flying embers and sparks. 

• Don't use petrol or paraffin to start 

the fire. 

• Don't leave the fire unattended. 

• Never throw aerosol or LPG 

containers on the fire. 

• Ensure the fire is put out and cover 

the ashes with earth. 

Our message is to enjoy the 

celebrations, but do so carefully and 

responsibly.

on finding alife-long 

love forsport

Encouraging 

children to try 

sports is essential 

to their health and physical 

development, and can spark a 

life-long love for sport. 

Olympic cyclist, Sir Chris 

Hoy MBE is Great Britain’s most 

successful Olympic athlete of 

all time. In total he’s received 

six gold medals, one silver 

medal, and won eleven world 

championships. Chris’ passion for 

cycling started at a young age, 

before the competitions and 

medals, he just enjoyed the sport. 

“One of my favourite memories 

is not getting my first bike, but 

my third bike. I was seven years 

old and had always had second 

hand bikes, so getting a brand 

new bike was a huge deal…” 

“It was a black and gold 

Raleigh Super Burner and I had 

been looking at it in a catalogue 

for months and months - the 

page had practically fallen apart! 

It was also in my local bike 

shop window and I would stop 

and stare at it every time we 

went past.” 

Chris’ parents only agreed to 

buy the bike if he could raise 

half the money, all £50. Thinking 

that Chris would never reach the 

target, they set the challenge. But 

Chris’ drive and resilience was 

strong even at seven… 

“I spent those few weeks 

shovelling snow, and charming 

my parent’s friends at dinner 

parties for £1 here and there and 

before I knew it just one month 

later I’d done it!” 

It’s no surprise that Chris rose 

to the challenge. After he’d raised 

the money Chris’ parents kept 

their word... 

“One day I was staring 

longingly at the bike in the shop 

window and they said ‘come on 

then let’s go in’. And to my shock 

and delight they bought it!” 

The excitement didn’t wear 

off either after Chris had brought 

his new bike home… “I was 

absolutely obsessed with it. I 

cleaned it meticulously every 

night, and it was the first thing I 

saw when I woke up and the last 

thing I saw at night.” 

For Chris it was this early 

experience of cycling that 

sparked his life-long passion 

for the sport that led him to 

compete, and eventually create 

and design his own range of 

bikes, Hoy bikes. With Chris’ 

success and advice in mind, 

children should take up a sport 

not to compete, or aspire to 

be an athlete, but first and 

foremost to find joy and a hobby 

in exercise, to potentially form a 

life-long passion for a sport.

Pantomimes are a 

wonderful annual 

tradition for many 

families in the UK, providing 

slapstick comedy and topical 

humour to entertain every 

age. The performances are 

almost always based on 

popular children’s stories and 

fairy tales, and are held in a 

wide variety of venues, from 

prestigious theatres to local 

town and village halls across 

Britain. Pantomimes tend to 

be more playful and comical 

than regular theatre, and 

involve eccentric costumes, 

musical numbers, audience 

participation, and ahappy 

ending in every show. 

Although less strictly 

followed today, traditionally a 

number of the main roles were 

gender swapped. The Dame 

is an older female character in 

pantomime, often the hero’s 

mother, ,who regularly wears 

the most bizarre and garish 

outfits, and to this day 

is almost always played 

by aman. an. The gender 

swapping between the 

principal boy and girl is 

followed less frequently 

in more recent years, 

but traditionallytionally these 

would also be 

notable features of 

the performances. rmances. 

One of the most 

popularadditions to 

British pantomime shows are 

the celebrity cast members. 

They both help to draw in 

crowds for the theatres, 

and provide audiences with 

the opportunity to see their 

favourite stars taking part in 

over-the-top, farcical comedy 

guaranteed to have them 

roaring with laughter. The 

type of humour we know in 

pantomimes today was first 

introduced in 1843 when 

the Theatres Act was lifted 

and allowed all theatres the 

use of spoken word intheir 

performances. Witty puns, 

word play, and audience 

participation began to be 

introduced by writers at the 

time, and these are still some 

of the main factors to the 

modern British pantomime 

providing fun, feel-good 

shows for all ages!

Get outdoors with the National Trust 

this half term 

There’s lots of great days out to keep your kids busy this half term. 

Here’s just some of what you can do at these places in North Yorkshire: 

Beningbrough Hall, Gallery & Gardens, near York 

Muster up some courage for a whole host of magical nature activities this 

half term. 

From 20 October – 4 November follow ‘Bugs and Broomsticks’ through the 

gardens to see if you can find the escaped Beningbrough bugs. 

Join us from 28 October – 3 November for different daily activities, 

including ‘hold a really scary beast’. Sam’s Safaris will be bringing some of 

their unusual creatures including a legless European lizard, a giant hissing 

cockroach and the aptly named Shelly the giant snail. 

Wear your most scary outfit and get into the spirit of things in the annual 

Halloween costume parade on 31 October. There’ll also be story telling in 

the outdoor den with Eden from Stories Alive.

October is an exciting time of 

year to see the deer - follow the 

deer volunteers to find them. The 

males are starting to compete 

for dominance, so listen for their 

loud bellows and the sound of 

clashing antlers.

colours and illustrations 

used in medieval illuminated 

manuscripts to create your own decorated bookmark. 

Light up your evenings in 

October with Fountains 

by Floodlight. See the 

abbey brightly lit with 

colours – can you spot 

the mysterious roving 

monk? Bring a touch

November) and see if 

you can find where he’s 

hiding.

Follow the witchy trail of Wisteria the Witch during half term. She’s asking 

you to help find the missing ingredients to her potion by following a trail 

through the house. Kids can also make slimey potions in the kitchen or 

make their own broomsticks in the courtyard.
