Get outdoors with the National Trust
this half term
There’s lots of great days out to keep your kids busy this half term.
Here’s just some of what you can do at these places in North Yorkshire:
Beningbrough Hall, Gallery & Gardens, near York
Muster up some courage for a whole host of magical nature activities this
half term.
From 20 October – 4 November follow ‘Bugs and Broomsticks’ through the
gardens to see if you can find the escaped Beningbrough bugs.
Join us from 28 October – 3 November for different daily activities,
including ‘hold a really scary beast’. Sam’s Safaris will be bringing some of
their unusual creatures including a legless European lizard, a giant hissing
cockroach and the aptly named Shelly the giant snail.
Wear your most scary outfit and get into the spirit of things in the annual
Halloween costume parade on 31 October. There’ll also be story telling in
the outdoor den with Eden from Stories Alive.
Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal, near Ripon
October is an exciting time of
year to see the deer - follow the
deer volunteers to find them. The
males are starting to compete
for dominance, so listen for their
loud bellows and the sound of
clashing antlers.
Pop by Swanley Grange and
be inspired by the bright
colours and illustrations
used in medieval illuminated
manuscripts to create your own decorated bookmark.
Light up your evenings in
October with Fountains
by Floodlight. See the
abbey brightly lit with
colours – can you spot
the mysterious roving
monk? Bring a touch
on Saturdays (also
26 October, 2 & 3
November) and see if
you can find where he’s
hiding.
Nunnington Hall, near Helmsley
There’ll be haunted happenings on 23 October – pick up a potions list
and search the house for everything you need to cast a spooky spell. There
are also creepy crafts and ceramic pumpkins to decorate. On Halloween
itself, get goosebumps on a family friendly Fright Night ghost tour - booking
essential, tel: 01439 748283.
Ormesby Hall, Middlesbrough
Follow the witchy trail of Wisteria the Witch during half term. She’s asking
you to help find the missing ingredients to her potion by following a trail
through the house. Kids can also make slimey potions in the kitchen or
make their own broomsticks in the courtyard.

Add some colour to
your weekend this

Go crunching through fallen leaves and discover a forest
