THANDAINJA DAILY WE ARE FACED WITH THE IMAGES OF HUMANS NEEDING HELP BUT WHAT OF THE SICK, HUNGRY AND ABUSED ANIMALS IN OUR TOWNSHIPS THAT TOO NEED OUR ATTENTION? WHO CAN IGNORE THE HAUNTING IMAGES OF ANIMALS-IN-NEED? Often the owners of these sick animals have nowhere to turn to for assistance as private veterinary care and comprehensive treatment is out of their reach. Besides the cost factor, the local taxi will not allow dogs in the vehicle. We cannot continue to ignore the need within these communities. We need to extend a helping hand by providing a cost-neutral offering that these community members can rely on. Another crucial challenge facing these communities is the high number of dog bites. South Africa holds the ignoble title of having the highest number of dog bites than any other country in the world. This high percentage of dog bite fatalities is directly linked to the lack of access to health care, zoonotic diseases and poor animal care education. It demands a more immediate and more sustainable initiative. The Thanda <strong>Inja</strong> Community Outreach Project was initiated to address this dire situation and to reduce the number of animal births within the informal settlements of Daveyton, Johannesburg, South Africa. The current bi-weekly offering of vaccinations, veterinary treatment and sterilisation is not making a big enough impact. We need to support this community and the larger geographical area by providing comprehensive care for the animals-in-need as part of the community upliftment. An additional offering of supplementary feeding for the animals has been implemented. In doing so we found a large number of those attending our clinics too were in need of a decent meal. To this end we started offering a community soup kitchen for the owners of the animals which include the elderly and children. — 11 —
