Introduction
Dumela! Welcome to BOTSWANA. We are a well renowned destination known not only for
the vast species of flora and fauna; but for our respect for the environment, our stern stance
on conservation issues and for being a pioneer in sustainable tourism.
Tourism is the second most important source of revenue and currently contributes approx.
7% to GDP. At present over 70,000 people are directly and indirectly employed in the tourism
sector. This number is expected to rise to 100 000 by 2027.
In accordance with its master plan for the development of tourism, Botswana aims to achieve
maximum economic benefits while at the same time ensuring that this does not take place at
the expense of the population, the local culture, or the environment.
More than 1/3 of Botswana land is devoted to national parks, reserves and wildlife
management areas. Most of the land reserved for wildlife remains unfenced; allowing animals
to roam wild and free in their natural habitats.
