Travel & Tourism Expo

Introduction
Dumela! Welcome to BOTSWANA. We are a well renowned destination known not only for
the vast species of flora and fauna; but for our respect for the environment, our stern stance
on conservation issues and for being a pioneer in sustainable tourism.
Tourism is the second most important source of revenue and currently contributes approx.
7% to GDP. At present over 70,000 people are directly and indirectly employed in the tourism
sector. This number is expected to rise to 100 000 by 2027.
In accordance with its master plan for the development of tourism, Botswana aims to achieve
maximum economic benefits while at the same time ensuring that this does not take place at
the expense of the population, the local culture, or the environment.
More than 1/3 of Botswana land is devoted to national parks, reserves and wildlife
management areas. Most of the land reserved for wildlife remains unfenced; allowing animals
to roam wild and free in their natural habitats.
1

Okavango Delta
Inscribed by UNESCO as the 1000th World Heritage Site.
Maun is the point of entry into the Delta, and often into Botswana, with direct flights from
both Johannesburg and Gaborone. The Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta, descends
from the highlands of Angola to the Kalahari. This unique link between large bodies of water
and the sand-covered or savannah landscape of the Kalahari has produced a wide range of
flora and fauna which makes the Delta one of the largest nature paradises in the world.
About one third of the area of the Delta forms part of Moremi Game Reserve, the oldest
game reserve in Botswana, the best game viewing area and the first of its kind to be established
by a community in Africa in March 1963.
Almost the entire spectrum of animals indigenous to Southern Africa can be found here and
may be observed in their natural habitat within a short period of time. Even the rhinos have
returned. Like Botswana’s other tourist destinations, the Delta can be visited by tourists all the
year round. One of the must do activities is to experience a mokoro, it was a traditional
method of transport used to traverse the Delta. A sightseeing flight over the delta is
“obligatory” and indeed unavoidable, as this is the only way of reaching most of the lodges and
“luxury-tended” camps. This bird’s-eye view enables the unique beauty of the Delta to be
enjoyed to the full.
Chobe National Park
Linyanti & Savuti
Chobe National Park The Chobe National Park, second largest national park in Botswana,
covers 10,590 sq km and has the greatest concentrations of elephants found on the African
continent. The park is divided into four distinctly different eco systems: Serondela and Chobe
River with its lush plains and dense forests in the area in the extreme north-east; the Savuti
Marsh in the west about fifty kilometers north of Mababe gate; the Linyanti Swamps in the
north-west and the hot dry hinterland in between. A major feature of Chobe National Park is
its elephant population – the largest surviving continuous elephant population on earth. The
Chobe elephant are migratory, making seasonal movements of up to 200 kilometers from the
Chobe and Linyanti rivers, where they concentrate in the dry season, to the pans in the
southeast of the park, to which they disperse in the rains.
Savuti Often described as one of, if not the best, wildlife-viewing area in Africa today. Savuti
boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife left on the African continent. Animals are
present during all seasons, and at certain times of the year their numbers can be staggering.
Savuti is famous for its predators, particularly its resident lions that sometimes form large regal
pride big enough to take down adult elephants and spotted hyenas populations that engage
constantly in a battle with the lions. The revival of Savuti Channel which dried up three
decades ago has brought back the life that was.
Linyanti In the furthest corner of Chobe National Park lays the paradise of Linyanti. Secluded
and uncrowned, this short strip of swampy river frontage is reminiscent of the Okavango‘s
permanent waterways with papyrus-lined lagoons, reed-beds and a towering canopy of trees.
The wildlife is plentiful, especially in the dry winter months when great concentrations of
elephant, buffalo and zebra congregate along the river, with giraffe, impala and roan antelope
being seen in the forests.
Chobe National Park

Central Kgalagadi & Kgalagadi
Transfrontier Park
Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) – larger than Denmark, nothing prepares you for the
immensity of this reserve, nor its wild, mysterious beauty. There is the immediate impression
of unending space, and having the entire reserve to you. It is the second largest Game Reserve
in the world, covering an area of 55,000 sq km. It was once the scene of wildebeest migrations
almost in equal to the great migration of East Africa and today CKGR is a place of unique fauna
and flora that has adapted to a semi-arid existence and a safari here is one of the wildest and
remotest experiences in Africa. This reserve is characterized by mostly flat, open plains, salt
pans and ancient river beds with grasses covering the sand dunes. Many species of trees and
shrubs grow in the north, and the central side of the reserve is a flat bushveld area. Mopane
forests dominate in the southern and eastern part of the reserve. Peculiar to this area are the
fossil river valleys that contain numerous salt pans. Four of these salt pans include the Deception
Valley, Piper pan and passage valley. The name ‚Deception‘ is derived from the dry surface
of a pan, from which a mirage sometimes makes it appear convincingly full of water, until one
gets right to the edge only to realize that it was the sun rays that were attracting.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) – The Republics of Botswana and South Africa have joined
forces in the promotion of Natural resources conservation by forming the world’s first ever
Transforntier Park “Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park” in Southern Africa. The formation of this park
was merging the formerly known as Gemsbok National Park, which is 28,400 sq km² and lies
in the extreme southwest of Botswana, and the formerly known as Kalahari Gemsbok National
Park which is 9,591 sq km² in the South African side. The combined land area of the KTP is
about 38,000 sq km². Almost 75% of this Park is in Botswana side. There are three entrance
gates into the Park – Twee Rivieren (Two Rivers) in the south, Kaa in the north and Mabuasehube
in the east. A border post is located at Twee Rivieren for visitors wishing to enter
through Botswana and exit through South Africa or vice versa. KTP is the largest conservation
area in Southern Africa and represents an increasingly rare phenomenon: a large ecosystem
relatively free from human interference. A landscape of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation,
semi-desert savannah, denuded grasslands whose crests are covered with grey Camelthorn
bushes and Kalahari couch grass to the dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob Rivers. The park
has abundant variety of wildlife and the famous antelope herds which are
non-waterdependent or desert adapted aminals. The KTP also boasts Africa’s big wild cats, the
black maned Kgalagadi lions (only found in Kgalagadi), cheetah, and leopard. Brown and
spotted hyenas are also found here. Visitors to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park offer a majestic
and infinite desert landscape with herds of wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok and eland. Ground
Squirrel and Meerkats are two more of the park’s more prominent species. Both these ground
dwelling species live in large family groups for added protection and can easily be seen
throughout the park.
5

Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pans
Nxai Pan National Park, of the great Makgadikgadi complex, Nxai Pan National Park covers an
area of 2,100 sq km, and comprises several larger pans – Nxai Pan, Kgama-Kgama Pan and
Kudiakam Pan, which were once ancient salt lakes. These larger pans are now grassed, and are
scattered with islands of acacia trees, and smaller pans that fill with water during the rainy
season – thus providing rich resources for wildlife.
Makgadikgadi, the name of which implies a vast open land, is not without its folklore. Makgadikgadi is not
always dry. The pans fill with water during the rains from mid-November and mostly retain
their water into April or May. The „thirst lands“ are then transformed into great sheets of
water, which attract a spectacular array of water birds and trigger dramatic migrations of
wildebeest and zebra. Both dry season and wet season visits to this area are recommended in
order to witness the dramatic appearance of the pans at their driest and to experience the
transformation to a water wonderland, and see the wildebeest and zebra migrations, in the
wet season. A visit to Makgadikgadi will give a distinctly different experience – a vast wilderness
of space and timelessness.
Kubu Island. Within the Makgadikgadi and raising no more than 20m above the Sowa Pan, this
national monument with its fossil beaches, stunted baobab trees and mysteriousstone walls,
leaves an indelible impression upon all who visit its water-worn shores. This scrap of rock and
its ghostly baobab trees is surrounded by the sea of salt. For both Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans
National Park, four-wheel-drive is recommended, as even in the dry season the pan surface
can be treacherous with the unseen water table under the hard-baked surface. Once on the
pans the exhilaration of driving across their flat surface in unforgettable.
Other activities in this area include a meerkat visit, quad bike rides as well as visits of the
famous Baine’s Baobabs trees or the huge Chapman’s Baobab.
7

Tuli Block
The Tuli Block is a narrow strip of farmland in the east of Botswana along the Limpopo River,
which here forms the border with South Africa. This fertile and scenically attractive territory
contains the largest private game reserve in southern Africa, the Mashatu Game Reserve (450
sq km), the smaller Tuli private game reserve (75 sq km), as well as several game farms.
To take part in game drives it is essential to reside in one of the lodges, camps or other
accommodations belonging to the landowner. Otherwise it is only possible to cross the private
reserve while in transit.
Spectacular landscapes, rich and varied wildlife, and a host of historical, cultural and natural
history attractions define this unique and very striking eastern part of Botswana. Straddling the
Shashe, Motloutse and Limpopo Rivers, which serve as natural boundaries with Zimbabwe and
South Africa, the Northern Tuli Game Reserve (NTGR) comprises 71,000 hectares of remarkably
diverse habitat, including mophane bushland, riverine woodland, and marshland, punctuated
by towering sandstone cliffs, basalt formations and unusually shaped kopjes – making for
truly breathtaking scenery. One of the largest privately owned game reserves in southern
Africa and incorporating three major private concessions (Tuli Safari Lodge, Nitani Private
Game Reserve, and Mashatu Game Reserve), the NTGR is home to 48 species of mammals
and over 350 species of birds, with an estimated 20,000 animals residing in the reserve. Most
naturally occurring wildlife species are present, including elephant, kudu, zebra, impala, duiker,
wildebeest, waterbuck, steenbok, and warthog. Large herds of eland – often not seen
elsewhere in Botswana – are present, and these are indeed an awesome sight. All major
predators, including lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena, are present, and the birdlife is prolific.
The NTGR is adjacent to a larger area of eastern Botswana called the Tuli Block. This is a ten
kilometre wide strip of land running approximately 180 kilometres south to Martin’s Drift that
holds a string of commercial agricultural and game farms, several of which also offer tourist
facilities. Travellers keen for a more active safari experience will delight in all there is on offer.
You can hike the reserve, bike the reserve, horse-ride the reserve, and even hot air balloon
the reserve!”
GRANT NEL
MIKE MAIN
Biography
With a heritage dating back to the arrival of the French
Huguenots at the Cape of Good Hope in the 17th
century, Africa is truly in Grant’s blood. Having spent
his youth in the wild places of Zimbabwe and Namibia,
it is unsurprising that he pursued a career in wildlife.
After completing a post graduate degree in Zoology,
Grant underwent ranger training at the world renown
Mala Mala Game Reserve. After a successful career in
eco-tourism spanning twenty five years, and taking him
from ranger to Safari Company CEO, Grant has
returned to his first love as a professional wildlife guide.
For the past two decades Grant has been living in
Botswana on the banks of the Chobe and Zambezi
rivers where wildlife abounds and Africa’s last mega
herd of elephant roams. As an experienced field
naturalist with a scientific grounding, Grant has a broad
and holistic understanding of ecosystems and their
inhabitants. Strong interpretive and communicative
skills enables him to share this knowledge in a manner
that is both educational and enjoyable. A dedicated
conservationist, Grant sits on the board of two
Botswana conservation not-for-profit organizations and
liaises with local and national government agencies on
environmental matters.
Mr Mike Main holds an MBA qulaifcation from the
Univesty of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Arts degree
(Psychology and History) from the uivesrty of Soth
Africa. Mike also holds qualification in in Roman Dutch
PABLO RAMÓN
Pablo Ramón (Seville-Spain, 1963) is a journalist and sociologist specialized in Human Ecology.
He was a researcher at the Doñana's National Park, one of the main natural reserves in
Europe, beside the Gibraltar strait, and an active member of the World Wildlife Fund. He has
been editor of some of the leading travel magazines in Spain, like PARAÍSOS American
Express, Grandes Viajes, VISA Iberia, Turismo Rural... Also Communication director of two
hotel groups. He lived in Morocco between 2000 and 2003 - an intense period for the country
-, working like assistant for the GM of the Maroc Soir press group.
He discovered, thanks to an interview to a blind girl on the radio in 2009, that blind people can
also surf the Internet. From this day on he decided not to write forgetting them anymore, and
he created the Association NATIVE Tourism For All, an NGO, a club of responsible hotels
with a first web platform accessible for everyone designed together with the Spanish National
Association for the Blind. The new version of its website is a uniquely accessible online
platform for the travel industry, which offers exceptional accessibility, and allows users with any
kind of disability to navigate to make their holiday choices. Already available in six languages, it
can be used by anyone, even unable to see the screen, touch the keyboard or speak to the
computer. Users can browse just blowing, emitting a sound or touching any key - in case of a
Parkinson´s, for example -. Furthermore, its accessibility is available online, from the cloud,
rather than limited to any computer through specific peripherals. So users can access it using
any computer, anywhere. Once on the platform, customers can compare a range of hotel
standards of accessibility for people with different disabilities, filtering each accessible element
at the hotel and room.
Moreover, they detected several obvious deficiencies in customer care for older people or
people with disabilities in hotels and other tourism services. And they began to search, create
and promote surprising technical solutions to these gaps, which are going to present these days
in the BTTE, as the solutions for the stay in hotels - Braille and embossed signalethic pack, alert
wristwatch for deaf customers in case of fire or knock on the door - solutions for restaurants
like the Chef´s Voice hearing tool of the menu including a filter of allergens in twelve languages,
for clients with low vision or food intolerances, and other accessibility solutions applied to
activities in nature, such as portable magnetic loops for deaf clients, systems for adapting
vehicles to the customer with movement limitations or even a wheelchair to ride on a
dromedary including a tilting platform at the time of the animal's ascent and descent.
On September 27, 2016, the UNWTO announced that the theme for World Tourism Day,
and for the year, would be ’Tourism for All – promoting Universal Accessibility’. NATIVE was
there. Six months later, also in Bangkok, the Jury for the WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow
Awards described this accessible hotels network like this: "While much of the industry
continues to make considerable progress on this issue, few have embraced the challenge and
opportunity as innovatively as the Spanish company NATIVE Hotels".
things? We take you on a luxury mobile safari offering guided tours of top destinations using
– our safari operation matches the uniqueness of the destination.
camping or lodging in Moremi Game Reserve, Central Kalahari, Makgadikgadi Pans, Nxai Pan,
and Chobe National Park. All camping duties, from camp construction to cooking and drinks
this unique area and its incredible landscape and it works perfectly in combination with one of
our mobile camping safaris. We offer guided mobile boating safaris from the top to the
bottom of the Okavango Delta although our 2 and 3 night stays are most popular
Our camps are often set up on uninhabited islands and the feeling of being the only occupants
apart from the wildlife are part of the magic that make the boating safari’s really special. Whilst
negotiating the narrow water channels opportunities abound for amazing bird sightings as well
as hippos, elephants and some of the larger mammals that call this area home. As we explore
areas that are relatively undiscovered the wildlife is often more relaxed making for some
memorable sightings at close quarters.
ABOUT US:
Africa Wild Lodges and Safaris began as an exploration through the most remote and
beautifulparts of Botswana, finding lodge locations in which guests could have real safari
encounters. As the company developed, the idea to create new ways of exploring the bush
evolved. For example, one of our Africa Wild Lodges, Kadizora Camp, is the only place in the
Delta to host hot air balloon safaris. We also aim to provide guests with the opportunity to
safari year round; by mokoro, 4×4 game drives and by foot on bush walks.
Equally important to Africa Wild is creating restful and comfortable places with great service
for guests to come back to. A ‘bush home’ where you can meet our friendly and locally
trained staff and share stories around the camp fire. Enjoy dining under the stars, eating
delicious cuisine as you see or hear wild animals enjoying theirs.
