Dorothy was born at Bulli 

and her family roots trace 

back to John Hawdon who 

arrived in Sydney in 1828 on 

he ship “Caroline” with his 

wife, two sons and some stud 

cattle. 

Dorothy met William 

“Bill” Goldsworthy a school 

boy swimming champion 

from Balmain and they married 

and set up home at 7 Wattle 

Street West Ryde and had 

three children Carole, Colin 

and Barry. Bill’s brother 

John Goldsworthy lived 

next door at number 9. They 

were both Balmain Tigers 

tragics and manned the doors 

at Leichhardt Oval for many 

years. 

Today Dorothy has eight 

grandchildren and seventeen 

great grandchildren. 

Her secret for longevity? Eat 

at last five vegetables a day, 

drink lots of water and abstain 

from smoking and alcohol. 

A proud and generous woman 

Dorothy is a real fighter 

who never gives up. Sadly Bill 

passed away in 2008 but Dorothy 

still encourages her children, 

grandchildren and great 

grandchildren with words of

There is a great deal happening to improve 

the liveability and amenity of the Lane Cove 

electorate thanks to funding from the NSW 

Government, much of which will be announced 

in the coming weeks. 

There will be upgrades and improvements 

to sporting fields, club houses, parks and open 

spaces, the beautification of certain areas 

within the electorate and much more. 

However, one improvement I am pleased to be able to announce is that commuters can now 

enjoy an easier journey through North Ryde, following the completion of a $15 million widening 

and upgrade of Delhi Road between the Hills M2 and Lane Cove National Park. 

The works, undertaken by Landcom on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services, formed part of 

a $17 million commitment to provide traffic upgrades in the area. 

To improve traffic flow, an additional eastbound lane was constructed along a 950 metre section 

of the road. 

Other works included putting existing overhead electrical and telecommunication lines underground, 

repositioning bus stops, traffic signal upgrades, and new footpaths. 

Landscaping was also undertaken, including bush regeneration in Lane Cove National Park. 

This upgrade will make it easier for Lachlan’s Line residents, visitors and Sydney commuters to 

travel to and from the Macquarie Park precinct and onto the M2 motorway. 

The road widening was the latest improvement works undertaken following the upgrade of 

the intersection of Wicks Road and Waterloo Road with new traffic lights, drainage, footpaths 

and landscaping in 2014. 

The next important infrastructure project to be constructed is a $40 million landmark pedestrian 

and cycle bridge in North Ryde which will provide safe and convenient access for pedestrians 

and cyclists as they travel between Lachlan’s Line, the North Ryde Railway Station and jobs 

in Macquarie Park. 

Another infrastructure upgrade set to be delivered in Lane Cove under round two of the NSW 

Government’s $70 million Boating Now program are new boat ramps, pontoons and jetties, and 

improve car and trailer parking facilities at key access points in Lane Cove. 

These projects will improve the overall capacity and amenity of boating infrastructure at a 

number of locations in the Lane Cove electorate and are based on direct engagement with our 

local boaties. I welcome the additional contribution made by local councils and other partners 

which will further improve the boating facilities in Lane Cove. 

The successful projects in Lane Cove include, improved non-powered boating access at Bennelong 

Park, Putney and improved dinghy storage and launching facilities at Hunters Hill. 

Finally, a message to all the Year 12 students, and parents, who are just about to sit for the 

2018 HSC exams. 

Work hard, but don’t knock yourself out. Eat sensibly and get plenty of sleep. Do not cut family 

and friends out and maintain a balanced social life. 

Do your best, that is all anyone can expect. A high aggregate is pleasing, but lower marks are 

not a reflection on your future prospects. 

The first written exam, English, is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 18th October. Drama 

brings the examination curtain down on Friday 9th November. 

And here’s a little trivia; 6,106 young men and women will sit the 2018 HSC from the Sydney- 

North, Sydney and Hornsby region. In total 76,732 students across NSW are currently feeling 

the tension. 

The top three first names of this year’s HSC sitters are – Joshua, Thomas and Jessica.

Immigration questions to 

our Local Federal MPs 

Dear Sir, 

The results of a recently conducted 

survey showed that 

nearly two thirds of Australians 

polled were against what is 

the sheer madness of present 

high immigration intakes overwhelming 

our capital cities. 

This was just one of several 

polls conducted recently that 

clearly showed that the majority 

of Australian voters have had 

enough with the federal government’s 

policies on immigration. 

So why aren’t politicians listening?? 

Why are they treating the same 

voters like mushrooms? 

What have they got to gain and 

what is their agenda on this most 

vexing of issues. 

What goes on behind closed 

doors in Canberra when this issue 

is discussed? 

Maybe the local federal Liberal 

members, Alexander or Zimmerman 

any one representing the 

Labor party can answer these 

simple questions. 

Australian voters particularly 

the ones that love this great 

country have a right to know. 

In my opinion many Australian 

suburbs are now fractured into 

different ethnic groups or Cantons. 

Even Berejiklian is now asking 

for a cut to immigration. 

The second question I ask of 

the same above mentioned politicians 

is why have successive 

federal governments over more 

recent years decided to rapidly 

increase immigration from Asia, 

the Indian sub continent, the Middle 

East and to our lesser extent 

from Africa. 

We can see how well that has 

worked out in many suburbs particularly 

in the western suburbs of 

Sydney and parts of Melbourne. 

What was behind your thinking 

on this issue. 

I eagerly await a response from 

you pollies but I bet I won’t get 

one and I think I know why.

Towers: How high 

is too high? 

Dear Sir, 

A 60-storey tower is proposed 

for Macquarie Park and 

Ryde Council is supporting it. 

Four towers of 27, 30, 45 and 

60 storeys at 112 Talavera Road 

would amount to 1,256 new residential 

apartments in Macquarie 

Park without adequate community 

infrastructure. 

Council’s planning laws currently 

restrict development to 30 

storeys at this site - the development 

is double what the current 

laws allow. 

To put this in context, this 

tower will be the tallest building 

between Sydney and the Blue 

Mountains. 

The second-tallest building 

in Sydney behind Centre Point 

Tower stands at 55 storeys. 

The 60 storey towers are the 

worst idea imagined. I don’t 

know why Council chose to vote 

the proposal through to public 

exhibition instead of opposing 

it on the night as logic would 

dictate? 

Even after being pushed by 

Clr Lane at numerous Council 

meetings to scrap the proposal 

the Mayor has refused. What 

for? 

If the Mayor doesn’t support it 

he should be signing Councillor 

Lane’s petition and opposing the 

60 storeys. 

Anyways, with public exhibition 

hopefully opening up soon, 

I urge the community to unite 

together to show Ryde’s Mayor 

just how much we oppose this 

development.

Swiss transport 

Switzerland 

Dear Sir, 

Australia is my home, but 

at present I am in Basel, 

Switzerland. 

Here the public transport 

system is terrific; the longest 

we had to wait for a tram was 

six minutes and you can see 

when all the trams are coming 

on the electronic boards. 

During that time four trams to 

other destinations went past. 

A transport system designed 

by engineers for the public 

while ours is designed by politicians 

for votes and to be sold 

off later to private industry so 

they can become expensive 

like our privatised electrical 

system. 

The streets, trams, public toilets 

are all clean. 

In the streets are large recycling 

bins. I have seen a number 

of people standing at the 

bins, sorting their rubbish, and 

there is no financial return offered 

to entice them. 

Unlike Australia, I have not 

seen one parent sitting playing 

with their iPhone while their 

child tries to get their attention. 

I think this is because they 

have a better balance between 

economy and society. Less 

pressure to give money to 

greedy banks instead of needy 

people. 

In Australia I think the stress 

levels are higher than in Basel.

I met a young man a few 

years ago, a student at the 

time, who had started to turn 

his life around and was enjoying 

and attending school 

regularly. 

On the outside, he was a 

healthy teenager who just 

had some trouble engaging at 

school, I didn’t recognise the 

pain he was starting to suffer. 

This young person moved 

away from our services at 

Youth Off The Streets and 

to another city. Gradually he 

became overwhelmed by an 

intense internal trauma, he fell

into abusing alcohol and committed 

suicide one night when 

he was drunk. 

I attended this young mans 

funeral soon after he died and 

heard the most 

gut-wrenching story from 

the father’s partner: the boy 

had also lost three of his brothers 

to suicide. 

October is mental health 

month and this year we are 

asked to share the journey for 

better mental health and wellbeing. 

What I want to share 

with you is one of the reasons 

I think we should take mental 

health so seriously. 

These days mental health 

issues are far too common, 

particularly in young people. 

Issues of anxiety, depression, 

schizophrenia and many more 

plague some of our most vulnerable 

people. 

Sadly not enough people 

get help with these issues 

which often extend from some 

form of abuse, and those that 

don’t get help addressing their 

health often go on to suffer 

from further disadvantage, a 

life of crime or spiral downwards 

into alcohol and other 

drug abuse. 

It can be easy to tell when 

someone is not physically 

healthy and it can be easy to 

miss signs that someone you 

care about is struggling, but 

we need to take those extra 

steps to help our friends, family, 

colleagues and anyone else 

in your life.

Police turn to Hunters Hill residents 

for evidence to catch Nicole’s killer 

POLICE have urged Hunters Hill residents to come forward if they have any dashcam or CCTV footage that 

could help catch the killer of Nicole Cartwright (pictured), whose body was found in bushland at Boronia Park 

last week. 

The body of 

32-year-old Ms Cartwright 

was found 

beaten and bound by 

a Hunters Hill Council 

worker in Buffalo 

Creek Reserve and 

police said she had 

been tied up and assaulted. 

“We don’t have a 

cause of death at this 

stage but she did suffer 

injuries, suffice to 

say they’re consistent 

with assault,” Detective 

Superintendent 

Scott Cook said. 

“She was bound, 

with her hands tied in 

front of her body.”

footage in a bid to 

piece together Ms 

Cartwright’s final moments 

and have urged 

locals – especially 

anyone who was driving 

on Pittwater Road

Queen Divya of Dundas celebrated her 

twentieth birthday last week and is pictured

Divya migrated to Australia from India with 

her parents 17 years ago and says that Ryde 

has been very welcoming ever since she 

started calling it home. 

“The opportunities I’ve been granted and 

the experiences I’ve had the pleasure of 

sharing have significantly contributed towards 

the person I’ve become”, Divya says. 

“I would therefore like to take this opportunity 

to give back to the community and 

use this platform to share the cultural diversity 

and harmonious community that defines 

Ryde. 

“My studies in Law and Commerce at the 

University of NSW have highlighted that society 

works best when individuals are involved

MAYOR’S COMMUNITY MESSAGE 

A huge Granny Smith Festival this Saturday 

This Saturday all eyes will be on Eastwood with the staging 

of the famous Granny Smith Festival. 

Tens of thousands of people from across the City of Ryde 

and beyond are expected to descend on Eastwood for a 

day and evening of great entertainment for people of all 

ages, in which we also celebrate 150 years of the Granny 

Smith apple. 

There will be more than 3,000 

performers throughout the day as well 

as over 200 stalls and fun activities for 

everyone to take part in. 

Highlights include the Grand Street 

Parade which kicks off at 9.30am, as 

well as two performances from popular 

children’s act Hi-5 throughout the day. 

The Finale Concert also promises to be 

extra special with ARIA Award-winning 

singer Samantha Jade headlining before 

the traditional fireworks spectacular. 

It has all the makings of being a truly 

memorable event and I hope everyone 

can get down at some stage to soak 

up the fantastic atmosphere of this 

wonderful community event.

Upgrade to West Ryde Plaza 

begins 

I am excited to report that work will 

begin this week on improvements to 

West Ryde Plaza. 

The improvements will include a new 

play space for kids, additional seating 

and trees as well as installation of 

free public Wi-Fi, CCTV and additional 

lighting. 

Another highlight will be the introduction 

of a new eye-catching shade structure, 

which will provide the area with 

much-needed cover particularly during 

the warmer months. 

Council will make every effort to 

minimise the impact of the works 

on residents and businesses and 

property access will also be maintained 

continuously during construction. 

Weather permitting, the improvements 

will all be completed by March next year. 

Students get the chance to 

design my Christmas card 

I am inviting all primary school students 

from across the City of Ryde to 

participate in a competition to design 

my Christmas card. 

The theme for the competition is 

“An Aussie Christmas” with students 

in Kindergarten through to Year 6 

encouraged to participate by submitting 

a design that relates to the theme. 

Details on how to enter the competition 

are on the City of Ryde website. The 

closing date for entries is Tuesday 30 

October 2018.

Happy Club Eastwood AGM 

Club Eastwood was packed last Sunday morning for the Annual General 

Meeting when the new Board of Directors was elected including President 

Ray Blunt who was returned unopposed after reporting another successful 

trading year. 

Also elected unopposed was new Vice President Geoff Coles succeeding 

long standing member Graeme Hennessy who has retired from the Board after 

a long and distinguished service. 

Anthony Munroe was also uncontested for the new position of Finance Director. 

Four members were elected as directors to make up the full Board, 

namely Greg Voss, Gary Nenadovich, Jordan Mulhearn and Graeme Hall.

Grannies at Granny Smith Festival

The long awaited Granny Smith Festival is just 

around the corner and our grannies all have 

their sleeves up ready for the famous parade. 

It will be good exercise for them but also a perfect 

meeting place to run into friends who come 

from suburbs all around and join in on the fun 

in Eastwood. 

Our grannies are a little different; they are 

healthy and have their own iPads or mobile 

phones. Most importantly they are all active in 

social media e.g. Facebook and Whatsapp to 

keep in touch with overseas relatives. They can 

also use their iPads or mobile phones to take 

pictures with Granny, the mascot of the Festival 

to win a gift from Woollies or to share with 

friends through "Wechat" if not "Whatsapp". 

They can even put all the photos together to 

compile a Photostory or iMovie and upload to 

Youtube to share with friends and relatives. 

Thanks to this 21st century technology, some 

of our grannies can be included in their family 

group chats. Although English is still a barrier, 

nonetheless photos are an international language 

that everyone understands. To a certain 

extent, elder abuse can be minimised through 

communications. 

For any other grannies, if you don't understand 

what I am talking about, please come join us.

bunions? 

A common misconception 

majority of people 

have is that a bunion is 

a growth on the big toe, 

but in reality, it is just a 

structural misalignment 

that can result in pain. 

In medical terms, bunions 

are known as Hallux 

Abducto Valgus which 

simply means our big toe 

moves towards our second 

toe creating a ‘bony 

bump appeareance’.

the foot to become 

broader along with reducing 

the function of the 

big toe joint. 

A reduction in function 

of this joint can lead to 

degenerative changes 

(arthritis) which in turn will 

cause pain. 

Signs and 

Symptoms 

Apart from the obvious 

change in the alignment 

of your big toe, signs and 

symptoms such as pain, 

swelling, tingling, numbness 

and burning at the 

joint may present. 

Thickened skin at the 

base of your big toe may

How do I stop my 

bunions getting

The first step is supportive

a wide-fitting toe-box. 

Orthotics may be necessary 

in order to correct

better the outcome. 

Reducing 

bunion pain 

Padding, strapping, 

splinting and orthotic 

therapy will reduce 

pain levels as well as 

improve function. 

Pain medication prescribed

will not prevent the 

progression of your 

bunions.

She has been teaching 

for about ten years. 

Sally was recently diagnosed 

with breast cancer 

of her right breast and 

was consequently away 

from school for the first 

term. 

She had a small lump 

removed along with 

some lymph nodes from 

under her arm and then 

this was followed by a 

course of radiotherapy. 

Sally is slim, fit and other 

than her breast cancer 

diagnosis, is healthy. 

She enjoys playing water 

polo for her old university 

club. 

Sally was understandably 

stunned by her diagnosis 

as she had no 

family history of breast 

cancer. 

Things went smoothly 

though until a few weeks 

after her surgery, just 

before she started her 

twelve week course of 

radiotherapy. 

She started to find it extremely 

difficult to move 

her right arm and when 

she did so it was painful 

and tight. 

There was also a 

strange pulling sensation 

under her skin in her armpit 

and near her elbow. 

She was very worried 

about what this might 

be and concerned how 

it would affect her ability 

to teach and write on the 

whiteboard and play water 

polo in the future.

Thankfully Sally took 

her friend’s advice. 

The physiotherapist 

identified Sally’s symptoms 

as Axillary Web 

Syndrome, commonly 

known as cording. 

Research varies as to 

how often it occurs, ranging 

from 20% to 72% of 

those patients who have 

had lymph nodes removed 

from under their 

arm. This syndrome 

occurs most often 3-4 

weeks after surgery and 

less often outside this 

window. The defining 

characteristic of this syndrome 

is a web of skin in 

the armpit covering cords 

of tissue that become 

taut and painful when the 

shoulder is moved. With 

no treatment the cords 

usually spontaneously resolve 

within 3-8 months 

but until then movement 

is painful and uncomfortable. 

Sally attended twice 

weekly sessions for a few 

weeks with her physiotherapist 

and the treatment 

consisted of soft 

tissue mobilization and 

gentle skin traction. 

Sally was also given 

stretching and exercises 

to do at home which she 

did regularly. Her shoulder 

movement restriction 

lessened and her pain 

and pulling sensation 

reduced after the first 

appointment. Being an 

active person and needing 

to use her right arm in 

the classroom Sally had 

been concerned that she 

would never regain her 

normal movement but 

this was not the case. By 

the start of term 2 Sally 

was back with her class 

carrying a few more scars 

but looking forward to 

being back in the swing 

of all her activities with no 

problems.

When North Epping residents hear a door knock 

on Wednesday October 31, the faces that that greet 

them may not be just the usual trick or treaters, but 

instead friendly members and friends of All Saints Anglican 

Church, North Epping. 

The church is currently seeking a team of volunteers 

to collect donated food and gifts for the annual 

Toys’nTucker appeal from 4pm to 8pm on the night. 

They are keen for North Epping locals and friends to 

be involved in this community partnership and connect 

with each other. 

Mrs Louise Wood, Coordinator of this year’s appeal, 

explained, “This North Epping community collection 

has been organised by All Saints Anglican Church 

North Epping to collect food and gifts for Anglicare to 

give to people in need this Christmas as it is a wonderful 

way to share the joy of Christmas.

will be placed into small groups and allocated a

Local character statements a win for community planning 

The NSW Government’s first local character statement is a win for communities 

wanting more say in how their neighbourhoods evolve and respond to growth, 

Minister for Planning and Housing Anthony Roberts said Monday, showcasing the 

St Leonards-Crows Nest plan as the first to feature such a statement. 

“Going forward every new 

rezoning plan will put community 

needs at the centre 

of our planning by building 

on an understanding of local 

character,” Mr Roberts 

said. 

“We’ve consulted widely 

with the community and listened. 

People identified the 

need to protect their village 

atmosphere, walkability 

and liveability of their area. 

We’ve matched that against 

our Government’s passion 

for investing in more green

TWT wins action on high risk intersection 

A RIGHT hand turn arrow - which could save lives - was approved 

for the intersection of Bowden Street and Victoria Road 

in Ryde on Monday. 

Minister for Roads, 

Maritime and Freight 

Melinda Pavey and 

Ryde MP Victor 

Dominello were at 

the intersection last 

Wednesday to sign 

off on the approval 

which will see a right 

hand turn arrow for 

cars approaching the 

intersection from the 

Meadowbank side of 

Bowden Street. 

The approval of the 

right hand turn arrow 

follows reports in The 

Weekly Times about a 

spate of accidents at 

the intersection and 

a risk to pedestrians 

from cars turning right 

when pedestrians 

have a right of way. 

Mr Dominello supported 

The Weekly 

Times and has previosly 

expressed fears 

of a pedestrian being 

struck. 

“This trial will provide 

a dedicated right turn 

arrow which will allow 

northbound motorists 

on Bowden Street to 

safely turn right onto 

Victoria Road without 

navigating through 

traffic driving across 

the intersection,” he 

said. 

“Roads and Maritime 

Services also recently 

carried out improvements 

to the intersection 

which included 

extending turning 

lanes, relocating pedestrian 

crossings 

and adjusting traffic 

light phasing but this 

trial will determine if 

more changes can be 

made to improve traffic 

efficiency for all 

road users.” 

Mrs Pavey said the 

right hand turn arrow 

will be trialled from 

next year. 

“Mr Dominello has 

been a passionate advocate 

for this change, 

long called for by the 

community,” she told 

The Weekly Times. 

“More than 70,000 

vehicles use this intersection 

each day 

so it is important to 

ensure all road users 

can travel through this 

intersection as efficiently 

as possible. 

“Victoria Road is 

also an important 

east-west connector 

through a number of 

busy Sydney suburbs 

and provides direct 

access to the Sydney 

CBD. 

“Roads and Maritime 

is hard at work 

planning this trial and 

more information will 

become available in 

coming months and 

the community will 

be notified before the 

trial starts early next 

year.” 

Local resident Naomi 

Thompson said 

she has witnessed 

several near misses at 

the intersection. 

“My fear is that a 

car turning right from 

Bowden Street will 

stop in the middle of 

the intersection (to let 

pedestrians across) 

and the lights on Victoria 

Road will turn 

green and a truck 

hurtling down Victoria 

Road will see the 

green light, but not 

the car stuck across 

the intersection.”

on a ‘next in line’ basis. 

It will also conside a time 

limit scheme, requiring certifiers 

to take a three-year 

break from a client after a 

certain period.

we are cleaning it up,” he

“These proposed reforms 

now strengthen contract 

requirements and increase 

regulatory oversight.

The uncle of The Weekly Times Managing Editor John F Booth AM 

was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium, one hundred 

and one years ago this week. 

Private William Taylor 

Gibbs was the brother 

in law of Mr Booth’s father 

– Arthur John Booth 

– and was killed in action 

on October 4, 1917 

at Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, 

Belgium aged 

only 22. 

The pyrrhic battle at 

Polygon Wood cost 

15,000 allied losses, 

around a third of them 

Australian. 

One of these men, Private 

Gibbs had enlisted 

a year before he died 

and had recently been 

married to Bertha May 

Gibbs from their hometown 

of Grenfell before 

he embarked from Sydney 

on the HMAT Euripides. 

His war record reveals 

he arrived at the Western 

Front on December 

8, 1916. 

Details of his death 

with the Third Battalion, 

20th Reinforcements of 

the Australian Infantry 

Force are unknown but 

he was due to be promoted 

to Lance Corporal 

He is buried in Zonnebeke 

in an unmarked 

grave. 

“My father and Auntie 

Betty (as we knew her) 

also later lost a brother, 

Henry Booth, twelve 

months later almost 

to the day at Villers- 

Bretonneux in France 

and he had just turned 

20,” Mr Booth said. 

“His father Henry 

Booth never got over it 

and my Auntie Ella who 

lived to 101 at Grenfell 

told me in later years 

that they could never 

mention Sonny’s name 

(Henry Jr after his father) 

without their father 

bursting into tears. 

“My father, Arthur 

John Booth was the 

first of the trio to enlist 

at age 16 at Cootamundra 

where he claimed he 

was 18 years and five 

months! 

“They caught up overseas 

and on one unique 

occasion enjoyed leave 

together in London from 

where they sent postcards 

to their families. 

“Dad was the sole 

survivor and on returning 

he settled in Ryde 

where he married my 

beauty queen mum 

Renee Buckland at St 

Anne’s Church Ryde 

and became a successful 

businessman and 

sportsman and at the 

time of his death aged 

52 in 1952 was an Alderman 

on Ryde Council”. 

Mr Booth paid further 

tribute to his uncle one 

of more than 5,000 Australian 

casualties who 

were killed on a five mile 

front. 

“He was only 22 years 

old and had only arrived 

on the Western Front a 

few months before his 

life was taken from us,” 

Mr Booth said. 

“Bertha May lost a 

husband she had just 

married, my father lost 

a beloved brother in law 

and I lost an uncle I’d 

never grow up to know. 

“We can never imagine 

the full horror of fighting 

in the mud and blood of 

The Western Front or the 

bonds of brotherhood 

between our Anzac 

troops, many of whom 

would have known 

that they or their fellow 

countrymen would not 

come back or would 

come back wounded 

and mentally ill for the 

rest of their lives. 

“One hundred years 

later, I remember my 

uncle and the sacrifice 

he made in what he was 

told would be the war to 

end all wars.”

A story of courage and valour

that was the Battle 

of Passchendaele in 

1917. 

The Battle of Passchendaele 

of 1917 was a massacre 

in the mud. 

It dragged on for three and 

a half months in Belgium’s 

wettest summer in 30 years 

and included 38,000 Australian 

casualties from a 

total of 275,000 allied casualties 

and 200,000 German 

casualties. 

This horrific casualty 

count was expended to 

gain a stretch of ground - 

five miles long - from the 

allied trenches to the village 

of Passenchendaele. 

The battle was the initiative 

of General Douglas 

Haig, Commander In Chief 

of the allied armies on the 

Western Front. 

General Haig was looking 

for a decisive breakthrough 

and it has been argued by 

historians that he also wanted 

to relieve some of the 

pressure of French forces 

in and around Verdun by diverting 

German troops. 

He was confident that 

advances in allied artillery 

would wipe out the Germans 

and more than four 

and a quarter million shells 

were fired on the German 

trenches in 15 days. 

To the shock of the allied 

high command, the massive 

artillery bombardment 

mostly served to destroy 

the drainage system in the 

Flanders lowlands and the 

first allied offensive stalled 

as heavy rains led to extensive 

flooding. 

Capturing the strategic 

Passchendale Ridge and 

village proved to be beyond 

realistic expectations despite 

three major assaults. 

Mud rendered most 

weapons useless, artillery 

and tanks became bogged 

down in it, high explosive 

shells were buried and 

smothered in it and guns 

sank into it when fired. 

There are numerous reports 

of soldiers, neither 

wounded or pinned down 

by the enemy, drowning in 

deep, muddy shell holes. 

Eye witnesses report the 

battlefield was reduced to 

an enormous quagmire and 

where barbed wire didn’t 

stop the allied advance, the 

mud did. 

Charles Bean, the official 

Australian War Correspondent, 

noted in his journal 

“The major Generals don’t 

realise how much and desperately 

hard it will be to 

fight down such opposition 

in the mud with rifles 

chocked, Lewis guns out of 

action, men tired and slow. 

“I shall be very surprised if 

this fight succeeds.” 

It didn’t. 

Of the 12,000 Australians 

who died at Passchendaele 

more than 6,800 died in October, 

1917.

“We lost men like rotten 

sheep. I nearly got blown to 

pieces scores of times. 

“We went through a sheet 

of iron all night and in the 

mornings it got worse. 

“Lots were drowned in the 

mud and water. 

“Eight days of absolute 

hell.” 

Only a month earlier on 

September 20 the Australians 

launched an assault on 

the Menin Road – now regarded 

as one of the greatest 

of all Australian victories. 

The attack was preceded 

by a five day artillery barrage 

and the 1st and 2nd 

Australian divisions broke 

though the German lines 

and all objectives were captured 

or destroyed. 

The Germans counter attacked 

were crushed by 

artillery fire but the victory 

came at a cost of 21,000 allied 

casualties for a gain of 

six miles. 

The Battle of Passchendaele 

was to be the Australians 

last major battle in the 

Great War and more casualties 

were counted in that 

battle than in any other year 

of The Great War. 

Today the flat lowlands of 

Belgium farmlands still bare 

the scars of Passchendaele.

strewn across poppy covered 

fields and war cemeteries.

Locals gearing up for Invictus Games 

CLASSY combination of Brian Prentice, Alwyn Long and Jock Cunningham 

are the recently crowned Putney Tennyson Mens Triples bowls 

champions for 2018. The experienced trio (pictured left) downed their accomplished 

opponents Glenn Stanton, Michael Caruso and John Stanton 

29-20 in an absorbing final. 

DENISTONE Sports proved triumphant at the recent Jacobs Creek Triples 

Lawn Bowls Carnival. Pictured l to r with Carnival organiser Ron 

Court are winning team members Nick Martelli (skip), lead Les Crow and 

second David Linnert who claimed the title with three wins and a margin 

of 40 points from the North Epping team of Rob Phillips, Ken Douglas and 

John Fry (three wins; margin 39 points). 

Bowlers representing 36 teams from all over the metropolitan area participated 

in the event. 

PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle have arrived for the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney that commence this 

Saturday October 20 and run until October 27. 

The Invictus Games is an international adaptive multi-sport event, created by Prince Harry, in which wounded, 

injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans from 18 countries take part in eleven 

sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing.. 

Kids in TWT territory have been getting into the Invictus Games spirit with FREE games in Sydney Olympic Park.

of dividends in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade 

competition.

18 year old all rounder 

Manenti earned his first 

grade spurs at the start 

of the 2018-19 season 

while boom batsman 

Scott,18, will make his top 

grade debut this Saturday 

against Sydney University 

in a rain-affected round at 

Drummoyne Oval. 

The talented Scott 

zoomed into calculations 

after his superb 115 off 

141 balls against Bankstown 

in a second grade 

fixture at Birchgrove Oval. 

From the Gladesville and 

Northern Districts junior 

cricket system to first 

grade ranks in the space 

of four years – that’s the 

meteoric rise for these 

two outstanding cubs who 

were earmarked for higher 

honours by Tigers officials 

in their early teens. 

Both Manenti of Concord 

and Ryde boy Scott 

are products of the club ‘s 

premiership-winning A.W 

Green Shield U/16 team 

that lifted the trophy in 

2016, capping a golden 

summer by helping the 

Sydney club annex a 

fourth grade title and also 

earning NSW caps. 

A third member of that 

champion Tigers team 

- rising paceman Hugh 

Sherriff - created history 

last summer when he became 

one of the youngest 

quicks to play first grade 

in the Sydney premiership 

after making his top grade 

debut as a fresh-faced 16 

year old. 

Scott and Sherriff have 

also represented the 

Australian U/16s in youth 

internationals against Pakistan 

these past two seasons.

development program 

had unearthed a batch 

of exciting prospects 

throughout the grades 

and labelled young Manenti,

show enormous potential 

and have blossomed as 

cricketers since coming 

through our Green Shield 

program,” said Haire, a

all show a maturity that 

far belies their years,” he 

added. 

“Hugh and Harry have 

already tasted first grade 

while Liam gets his opportunity 

this weekend 

against Sydney University 

after scoring a magnificent 

ton in seconds.” 

Scott proved a prolific 

run scorer and wicket taker 

with his seam bowling 

for the Ryde-Hunters Hill 

Pirates and Trinity Grammar 

School before joining 

the Tigers while Manenti 

stamped himself a gun all 

rounder and inspirational 

skipper of the Northern

teams.

from the National U/17 

Cricket Championships 

in Brisbane where he finished

bouncing back to 

sink a strong Carlingford 

Cougars side 12-8 in a 

thrilling preliminary final. 

“But the boys showed 

tons of courage and skill 

in the title decider to blitz 

the Paddington team - 

avenging the major semi 

final loss in memorable 

style,” revealed a proud 

coach Abdennour. 

“They are all big match 

players and got the 

job done when it really 

counts,” said Michael. 

“I anticipated some 

early heartache with so 

many rep players unavailable 

at times but I 

backed the team to step 

up when the whips were 

cracking at the business 

end of the season - and 

the boys didn’t let me 

down,” he added. 

The Grand Final triumph 

was a great team 

effort under the leadership 

of Lewandos who 

led by example with his 

bustling runs and jarring 

defence.
