EDITOR'S WORD
Hellas
Greece is a nation inextricably linked to the sea. Sea and land complement each other, offering
us a unique opportunity to explore and experience the healing beauty of nature as it manifests in
both worlds. Especially in our busy lives today, spending some time off in nature, away from all
distractions, seems to be much needed.
Calmly experiencing the forests of the mainland or the seas of Greece is like listening to two
different storytellers, each with a different path of life, experiences, energy and charm. Both can
reveal some of the truths of nature and ourselves.
As photographer Marina Vernicos puts it, “Since I was a child I have been mentally and physically
split between these two worlds,” something greatly representative of Greece’s dichotomy.
Marina captures the solemn grace of the blue realm, while feeling deeply connected to it. Her
photographs take you on a profound journey and inspire you. “Lucky are the ones who can travel
and feel the power of art, either by creating it or by enjoying it,” says Marina, in relation to her
photographic journeys.
Art, a part of humanity’s culture, just like nature, can heal and benefit human beings. Human
culture’s spirit and wisdom has manifested in many ways, from the beauty of fine arts, to medicine,
to myriad other fields, including gastronomy. Dina Nikolaou, Greece’s gastronomic ambassador,
presents authentic Greek cuisine’s vibes to the world stage through her celebrated restaurant in
Paris. Cooking, just like the fine arts, can be an endless road to discovery, as a chef ’s dishes are like
“his or her mirror,” as Dina shares.
Authentic Greek cuisine is balanced and nutritious, and based on fresh, natural produce, in line
with the famous quote from Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food.”
Ancient medicine was very advanced, with a deep understanding of the human body’s functions
and needs. One of the ancients’ prescriptions was bathing in Greece’s therapeutic thermal waters,
a mind–body therapy generously provided from the depths of the Earth. Nowadays, many of these
natural thermal waters continue to benefit people from all over the world on Greece’s luxurious spa trail.
Similarly to how Greece combines land and sea, and how its unique culture inspires us, Taste
of Life is dedicated to bridging East and West, sharing the beauty and wisdom of both cultures.
Shen Yun’s principal dancer Angelia Wang introduces us to her art, classical Chinese dance, believed
to be a gift from the divine. Ancient stories, heroes and concepts come to life through the richly,
deeply expressive form of the classical dance of China. Through this, one can clearly see that human
culture has not only a superficial form, but also a deeper meaning and essence. Let us reconnect
with it, through its manifestation in authentic Chinese culture.

Five years ago A JEWEL MADE IN GREECE
(AJMIG) was born, tested, endured and became mature.
It is a new competitive platform of creativity,
synergy and inspiration involving Greek designers of jewelry
while developing an organic dialogue between the culture of
modern art and the culture of the centuries-long history of
Greek jewelry.
The main purpose of the platform is to promote the image
of Greek jewelry in Greece and the rest of the world, to unite
and to show the uniqueness of each creator, with respect and
free space of presence in each person’s personality.
“Through the platform, for the fifth consecutive year, Greek
jewelry has travelled to The World Trade Center in Dubai, the
emblematic building of the European Parliament in Brussels

and, recently, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD, New
York), some of our most important stations until now. At the
same time, as part of the persistent effort to promote Greek
jewelry in the world, we have been in contact with international
buyers and designers”, says Mary Samoly the founder of A
JEWEL MADE IN GREECE platform.
“At our annual meeting in Zappeion, which is now our
permanent site, we chose to support even more talented young
artists while keeping the doors of the exhibition open to
professionals and the wider audience.
“We publish every year a detailed exhibition book with professional
photos of jewelry and texts from reputable art historians
such as Iris Kritikou (AJMIG Consultant Art Historian),
Dora Iliopoulou-Rogan and Bryna Pomp ( Jewelry Specialist
& Curator at MAD) where all entries are recorded, while a
booth is also offered in the most important Greek Museums,
in order to highlight the history of Greek jewelry.” says Mary.
With a growing sense of responsibility, AJMIG has broadened
the functions of the platform in order to cover an important
historical need and give as many options and chances as
possible to present Greek jewelers. The platform has proceeded
to create a Digital Museum, which will be hosted in specially
designed venues, such as exhibition stands with high international
traffic, exhibition platforms and other venues of high
visibility, initially in Athens and then elsewhere.
The Gold Supporter of the Digital Museum is the historical
and continuously developing ZOLOTAS HOUSE
In the summer of 2018 AJMIG will travel again to Mykonos
– Petasos Hotel, Santorini – Oia Treasures Gallery, Spetses –
Multicultural Center, Anavyssos – Hotel Plaza Resort, Crete
/ Agios Nikolaos – L Maris Boutique and will cruise again
with Celestyal, while they have recently acquired a permanent
gallery space in Athens at the Divani Apollon Palace
& Thalasso Hotel.

For short-term visitors to Athens on their way to discover the
Greek countryside and islands, the capital’s rich cultural scene
can be both an attraction and a source of bewilderment: so much
culture, so little time. Visitors need days of museum-hopping to even
get introduced to the country’s history and art. However, there is an
entry-point to Greece’s culture, a gateway into its past and present,
and it can be found at the heart of the city.

The Benaki Museum opened to the public in 1931 and reopened
with a re-imagined display in 2000. Originally the family
home of the Benaki family, it was bequeathed to the nation by
its scion, Antonis Benakis (1873–1954). The new display untangled
the fascinating web of the founder’s private collection and
presented a panorama of Greek culture from distant prehistory
to the 20th century with the aid of further donations; this scope
is unique worldwide.
The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture, the flagship in a network
of six Benaki museums and cultural venues across Athens, attracts
hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly and offers a comprehensive
experience complemented by temporary exhibitions, a much-loved
restaurant and the longest-established museum shop in Greece.

內 部 , 相 反 的 是 另 一 種 令 人 安 慰 、 柔 和 的 音
樂 , 伴 隨 著 深 海 演 奏 的 聲 音 。 面 對 眼 前 平 靜 的 海 洋 ,
把 我 帶 到 了 另 一 個 和 諧 層 次 之 中 , 那 就 是 自 然 的 本

Outside, Athens city life bustles — car horns blare
against the backdrop of the general urban hum. But
inside the gallery, it's a soothing opposite — gentle
music with the sound of the deep ocean plays, and the serene
images of the waters transport me to another level of harmony,
that of nature itself, and reminds me of home.
That was my first experience back in 2013 of viewing the
photographic exhibition “Sea Through” by the award-winning
photographer Marina Vernicos at the Zouboulakis gallery.
Raised in Athens, Marina has a deep admiration for her
native country and notably for the many Greek islands that
she captures through impressive aerial views. She has directed
her lens towards the shores and under the tranquil seas of
destinations ranging from the islands of Polyaigos and Sifnos
in Greece to Tanzania in East Africa and Agra in India,
but still, Greece is her biggest love.
“Greece is the most beautiful country in the world and
every place is unique. I personally come from the Cyclades,
Sifnos, which is my beloved. Nothing in the world compares
to our islands. I have travelled to 117 countries and none
compares to Greece,” says Marina, who has been engaged in
art photography for more than 20 years.

on a journey and we should not take
anything for granted. In any case,
the journey, beyond the experience,
transforms us into the best version of
ourselves.”

Her love for the sea is derived from her family business,
Vernicos Yachts, which gave her the opportunity to
travel to many places in the world from a young age.
“I learned from my photographic trips how beautiful the
earth we live on is. Each country is unique and conceals its
own beauties. Travel is the most precious gift we can give
to ourselves and our children. We have to fill our lives with
travelling adventures,” Marina says.
Her passion for photography came to life in 1994 with
initial academic studies in Communications and Photography
at Emerson College of Boston. She continued study
in 1999 in Business Administration at Harvard Extension
School.
Since 2001, she has exhibited her images in distinguished
galleries and museums around the globe, and has collaborated
on photo projects with companies such as Mercedes,
Perrier, Napapijri, Folli Follie and Sani Resort. She was also
selected as an ambassador for Hermès.
Her work can also be seen in distinguished hotels such
as the Amanzoe and Nikki Beach Resort & Spa in Greece
and Turkey.

Besides London, New York and Monaco, her shots have
also been presented at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Greece,
the Louvre Museum in Paris, as well as the Hangaram Art
Museum in Korea.
Marina won the Sandro Botticelli Prize at the Palazzo Giucciardi
Bongianna in Florence and first prize from National
Geographic back in 2009 for one of her photographs taken in
Antarctica of a penguin sitting on an iceberg.
“For capturing a good picture, technical training and flexibility
are important, but the main thing is the composition.
I know many photographers who have studied photography,
they know everything about photography and do not make nice
pictures. On the contrary, I know self-taught photographers
making fantastic pictures,” Marina says.
In some of her aerial views she aims to capture beauty on
a larger scale, which up until recently she could only observe
close up. In some of her photos the natural landscape is depicted
in coexistence with the built environment. The natural
landscape is placid, with natural colours and shades, yet there
is a feeling of respect and caution, as Marina finds the correct
balance to bring out the calm feeling that she is looking for
in all her pictures.
In some of her photos she emphasizes the absolute boundary
between sea and land.
“'I chose this subject because since I was a child I have
been mentally and physically split between these two worlds,”
Marina says.
Her seascapes have a dreamlike quality; they are transcendental,
in that they transport the viewer beyond the human senses
and experiences. These are images that seek the extraordinary,
and as a result, transcend the ordinary.
“By shooting a photograph, Vernicos isolates this moment
in time, which ‘freezes’ fadeless in eternity," says Anna Chatzinassiou,
a well-known Greek art director. "Within the photograph,
there’s the real-time running, but simultaneously, the
photographic time evolves and captures this moment that will
remain everlasting."
"Her photographs do not give the impression that they
capture time; on the contrary, they are prolonging it or creating
their own time," she adds.
Marina, too, feels this transcendental, timeless quality of
photography.
“The photo offers pleasure, action, information, but also
passes through the magical world of art, with many feelings.
The photo can travel to you, remind you of beautiful moments,
to inspire you," Marina says.
When visiting beautiful and inspiring locations, Marina
shares her photographs on Instagram @mvernicos.
"I get a lot of messages when I travel from people who say,
'Continue to upload more photos, we want to travel with
you',” she adds.
“Lucky are the ones who can travel and feel the power of
art, either by creating it or by enjoying it.”

Her spirit of growth and exploration does not stop with photography.
She is also the founder and president of CREAID
(www.creaid.com), a non-profit organization with a targeted
humanitarian mandate, served through creativity and art.
“I come from a family that is very sensitive to issues of
vulnerable groups in our country and I wanted to contribute
for my part," Marina says.
"My Cypriot friend, Myrna Papichi, asked five years ago
for 250 well-known people to make a pashmina for charity.
I found the idea very successful and I told her I would do the
same in Greece. Since then we have held three auctions and
are preparing for the fourth.”
After selecting some of her most characteristic imagery,
the artist has also created her own line, the “Marina Vernicos
Collection”, of accessories and clothing, with part of the
proceeds from sales being donated to CREAID.
“This summer I'm launching a new collection of clothes,
swimsuits and accessories with my photos. It's a collaboration
with THE FASHION LAB and I hope it will works well,"
Marina says.

The wheels of the car bump along the rustic road as I meander
my way to Poggio ai Segugi — the country manor
of Stefano Ricci, founder of his eponymous bespoke
menswear brand. After an hour’s drive, the gates to the estate
open; pheasants greet me, as comfortable here as in the wild.
In an understated elegance like his clothing, Ricci’s impressive
home sits atop a hill amidst the rolling Tuscan hills of Mugello,
land originally owned by the Medicis, the leading Florentine
family since the 15th century. Spread across 1650 acres of wilderness,
game, and life — Poggio ai Segugi is an outdoorsman’s
paradise, and sanctuary. The hunter’s lodge lies adjacent to the
main house, and the Riccis dutifully maintain the ecosystem’s
balance by preserving and sometimes hunting wild animals
roaming the property. Any game hunted on the premises is
donated to the less fortunate in neighboring towns.
Of all Ricci’s properties around the world, it’s no surprise
this is his favourite. The home’s harmony with the land reveals
his true nature — a man who reveres tradition and the natural
order. He even spends every May and June in Africa on safari,
hunting for inspiration for a new collection.

Inside, the Stefano Ricci home collection adorns the
interior, with its immaculate objects such as hand-crafted
crystal water glasses and hand-hammered silver wine goblets
— just like those of the Renaissance — harmonized with the
masculinity of taxidermied hunting trophies on the walls.
The presence of Stefano Ricci, the bearded patriarchal
founder, fills up the room, radiating the aura of his brand’s
marketing slogan, “Honour, Power, Pride” — though he
somehow does it with an approachable warmth and humility.
“I am a normal person in a normal family, which has old
tradition,” Ricci says, an ethos which has been passed on to
his two sons, who now help him run the company — the
elder Niccolò, CEO, and younger Filippo, creative director.
“That is a treasure, it’s an asset for my kids to have grown
up with the same spirit.”

“My job is men’s fashion, and it’s more men’s tradition, because
there are two worlds,” says Ricci. “The one where the designers
like to dress a man like a woman, [and the] real tradition of men’s
clothing, which is tailoring and a completely different world.”
The brand’s eagle logo symbolizes that masculine strength,
while also suggesting a visionary, an ability to see far away —
or down the road — a quality the founder clearly possesses
after leading the market for 45 years in bespoke men’s fashion.
“This is not just a cloth, but also a heritage — the continuation
of the spirit of Florence, a continuation of culture,”
he says.
Reviving the Renaissance
Ricci has always emphasized the impact of growing up in
Florence, the birthplace of Dante, da Vinci and Michelangelo,

— a city of timeless tastemakers, inspiring Ricci in the
creation of his own brand.
“I don’t want to be luxury, I want to be different,” he says. His
legacy is a return to “quality, quality, quality” — classic, bespoke,
hand-crafted clothing, rightfully earning $500 a tie and $30,000
a suit. “If you really love what you are doing, you want to put your
own touch on what you learned from the Florentine culture.”
A tailoring and necktie aficionado — with a collection of
150 Hermès ties growing up — Ricci decided he’d write his
own chapter in the history books. In 1972, he designed his first
collection with the hope of making the best ties in the world,
inspired by the handmade craftsmanship and classical paintings
of the Renaissance.
Two years later, in his early
20s, Ricci and his maiden collection
were lauded at Pitti Uomo,
the preeminent international
menswear event. Soon, leading
international department stores
were lining their shelves with
Stefano Ricci ties.
“Today, to make a brand, you
can do it in two ways — one is with a huge advertising campaign,
the other is good quality. I never compromised the product for
the price — it’s exclusive because there are a few made of that
item,” he says. “The ladies’ cloth, the quality of the cloth, never
gets even close to the material that we use — not even haute
couture.”
Ricci’s current collection, the “Patchwork” series, also known
as the world’s most expensive ties, beautifully showcase the
handcrafted quality one expects from the Stefano Ricci label.
Hundreds of small silk pieces are hand sewn together using
fabric painstakingly spun on centuries-old looms, which can only
produce two ties’ worth of silk in one hour. But the high cost
never deterred Ricci, who deeply believed traditional Florentine
style and workmanship were the only way forward.
“If there is no passion, you don’t go anywhere,” Ricci says. “I was
pushed to expand by the request of the market, by the consumer.”
Only two years after his first tie collection, Stefano
Ricci added top-quality shirts and small leather goods,
and then continued to build out the men’s wardrobe, from

Ricci set a timeless standard of quality around the globe, all while
going in the opposite direction of the industry.
In the 1980s, as Italy shifted from an agricultural country to
an industrial and service-based economy, Italian fashions moved
away from haute couture to ready-to-wear clothing. The new
more affordable styles found in Milan deposed Florence as the
reigning fashion capital of Italy.
Ricci and other powerful Florentine fashion families formed
a philanthropic consortium called “Classico Italia” to bolster
the presence of Florence and to protect its artisanal heritage.
Its “100% Made in Italy” label signified production carried out
exclusively in Italy, versus the cheaper alternatives in Asia quickly
gaining in popularity.
Nothing can exemplify that “100% Made in Italy” bespoke
experience of Stefano Ricci quite like the creation of its custom
suits, where they even photograph a client’s stride to ensure the

most natural, precise fit. From exquisite fabrics of cashmere,
wool, and silk, to 186 production steps all graced by the hands
of master artisans — the quality, comfort and look of a Stefano
Ricci bespoke suit can’t be matched by a machine.
“What can be done in one minute with machine, with technology,
is done in four to five hours by hand,” Ricci says.
As demand continued to grow for Stefano Ricci clothing and
accessories, in 1993, Ricci opened his first monobrand boutique
in Shanghai — a bold choice at the time.
“Twenty-three years ago, nobody really expected what China
would be,” says Ricci. On a previous visit to China, Ricci saw
something that other entrepreneurs might have missed. “I was
looking at the way the young generation was moving, walking,
the energy of the eyes.”
The Chinese embraced the Stefano Ricci brand, even though
ties cost an equivalent of four months salary for a well-off Chinese.
Ricci’s sons, Niccolò and Filippo, saw huge potential in the
brand’s artisanal heritage, and bit by bit, with their
marketing savvy, Stefano Ricci opened a total of 52
boutiques internationally, from Dubai to Beverly Hills
to recently, the flagship store in Vancouver, Canada’s
first. Ricci personally designed every boutique himself,
each 100 percent made by Florentine craftsmen.
Staying true to the soul of the brand, Niccolò and
Filippo came across a business opportunity that was
less about economics and more of a responsibility to
their heritage. The speed and cheap cost of modern
industrial production were putting artisanal textile
mills out of business, including the legendary silk
mill Antico Setificio Fiorentino, which had been
producing fabrics for royalty since 1786.
In 2010, from the Pucci family, Stefano Ricci S.p.A. bought
Antico Setificio Fiorentino, a magical place that truly takes you
back in time. The ancient mill is tucked away along an alley, not
at all where you’d expect to find the production of Europe’s finest,
most expensive handmade silks, costing 2,000 euros per metre.
When you open the iron gate and walk towards the burnt-red
front door, you can faintly hear a rhythmic thumping and clicking
from the 17th and 18th century semi-automatic looms, singing
like an orchestrated symphony. Inside the historic mill, master
weavers line the walls working on ancient wooden looms, as one
lady in the corner patiently uses a warper designed by Leonardo
da Vinci himself, with his sketches still hanging on the wall.
“I really feel very lucky to make some contribution to the
preservation of these traditional crafts,” Ricci says, happy yet still
humbled by his role in history, a legacy and heritage he wants to
preserve and pass on. “Now is the moment to think about the
future. Stefano Ricci and the approach to quality is something
for the new generation, the young generation.”

琛 絕 對 是 其 中 之 一 。 早 在 五 年 前 的 花 季 年
華 , 王 琛 已 經 成 為 了 世 界 頂 級 中 國 古 典 舞
表 演 團 體 「 神 韻 藝 術 團 」 的 領 舞 演 員 。 如 今 的 她 依 然
是 團 裏 的 領 舞 , 還 是 深 受 全 球 「 神 韻 」 觀 眾 們 欣 賞 和
喜 愛 的 舞 蹈 明 星 , 更 在 這 做 為 舞 蹈 演 員 最 黃 金 的 一 段
時 光 裏 , 實 現 了 從 舞 蹈 藝 術 到 內 心 世 界 的 蛻 變 歷 程 。
就 讓 我 們 走 近 王 琛 , 一 同 感 受 她 人 生 中 的 成 長 和 體 悟
吧 !
成 長 磨 礪
目 前 二 十 歲 出 頭 的 王 琛 正 處 在 舞 蹈 演 員 最 巔 峰 的 時
期 。 出 生 在 中 國 古 都 西 安 的 她 , 十 三 歲 時 獨 自 來 到 大 洋
彼 岸 的 美 國 , 進 入 紐 約 「 飛 天 藝 術 學 院 」 學 習 中 國 古 典
舞 。 多 年 的 獨 立 生 活 學 習 和 已 經 擔 綱 過 的 近 千 場 全 球 巡
演 , 讓 她 有 著 遠 超 同 齡 人 的 豐 富 演 出 經 驗 和 人 生 閱 歷 。
做 為 舞 蹈 演 員 , 王 琛 天 生 有 著 優 異 的 身 體 條 件 , 看 似 瘦
弱 纖 細 的 她 卻 擅 長 翻 騰 等 需 要 力 量 的 技 巧 。 她 曾 每 天 練
習 每 種 翻 騰 超 過 一 百 個 , 學 會 一 個 動 作 就 要 盡 力 做 到 完
美 已 經 成 為 她 的 一 種 習 慣 。
當 我 們 很 好 奇 地 問 起 王 琛 是 甚 麼 力 量 讓 她 能 保 持 在
近 六 年 的 時 光 裏 不 斷 突 破 自 己 的 身 體 和 心 理 極 限 , 一 次
次 實 現 自 我 的 提 升 。
Sometimes when watching theatre, the lines between
reality and fable fade. Even more so when the dancer
reminds you of a celestial fairy from a bedtime story
— effortless regal grace, sprightly dynamic flips and turns,
and most memorable — an aura not from this world, but
desperately needed here. Such was my experience watching
“The Lady of the Moon” — Angelia Wang, one of Shen Yun
Performing Art’s lead dancers.
“I regarded myself as Chang’E,” says Wang of her immaculate
performance of one of ancient China’s most
revered celestial characters. When she dances now, her
emotions authentically flow forth, and “the audience feels
they’re contagious,” she says.
Reaching a stage where Wang could incarnate into this
ancient goddess required many tumbles, both literal and
figurative. But to say Wang wasn’t aided by predestined gifts
wouldn’t be true either. A slender figure, nimble athleticism
and inborn fire for perfection seem to be given to her for a
reason — the very same that led her to leave China at the
age of 13 to become one of the world’s most beloved classical
Chinese dancers.

王 琛 依 然 保 持 著 自 己 的 淡 然 回 答 說 :「 其 實 , 我 自
己 並 沒 有 覺 得 特 別 的 艱 苦 , 我 就 是 覺 得 我 在 做 自 己 當 下
應 該 做 的 事 情 , 但 總 是 覺 得 自 己 做 的 還 不 夠 好 。 所 以 ,
我 也 不 會 覺 得 有 多 麼 痛 苦 , 總 是 覺 得 自 己 還 是 差 得 太
多 。」
王 琛 告 訴 我 們 , 因 為 她 現 在 已 經 是 團 裏 老 資 歷 的 成
員 了 , 所 以 除 了 自 己 的 訓 練 和 演 出 任 務 之 外 , 她 還 開
始 給 新 人 們 當 老 師 。「 教 她 們 的 時 候 , 真 會 有 種 『 書 到
用 時 方 恨 少 』 的 感 覺 。 因 為 每 個 人 都 不 一 樣 , 適 合 我 的
方 法 未 必 適 合 她 們 , 我 要 對 症 下 藥 地 解 決 她 們 的 問 題 。
這 個 過 程 也 是 我 自 己 學 習 的 過 程 , 豐 富 了 我 自 己 。」 王
琛 說 , 她 看 到 現 在 新 來 的 學 生 , 總 會 覺 得 自 己 是 個 過 來
人 , 想 讓 她 們 少 走 點 彎 路 。
「 主 要 是 幫 助 她 們 舞 蹈 上 提 升 吧 ! 至 於 生 活 上 , 我
更 願 意 和 大 家 多 分 享 快 樂 的 事 情 , 痛 苦 自 己 消 化 了 吧 !
畢 竟 她 們 都 比 我 年 紀 小 , 自 己 能 照 顧 好 自 己 就 很 好 了 ,
我 就 不 再 給 別 人 添 麻 煩 了 。」 說 到 這 裏 王 琛 笑 了 笑 , 好
像 一 切 都 如 此 自 然 , 她 儼 然 已 是 一 位 可 以 令 人 依 靠 和 信
賴 的 大 姐 姐 了 。
由 心 而 舞
儘 管 王 琛 征 服 了 讓 很 多 女 舞 蹈 演 員 望 而 卻 步 的 技
巧 , 但 中 國 古 典 舞 中 的 身 韻 對 於 她 來 說 就 是 更 需 要 時 間
和 內 心 成 長 來 提 升 的 部 份 了 。
At Fei Tian Academy in New York — where many Shen
Yun performers first start dancing — Wang quickly took
to tumbling, practicing techniques more than 100 times
every day.
Her devotion paid off. Within the first six years of joining
Shen Yun’s touring troupe, she had earned three gold medals
at international dance competitions. Though young in age,
almost a thousand performances around the world matured
her far beyond her years.
Despite her quick rise on the world stage, a humble perfectionism
always drives her. “I always feel I do not do well
enough. I don’t feel depressed, just that I’m not good enough.”
Inside out
Classical Chinese dance is similar to the process of peeling
away layers of an onion. As Wang pursued a more perfect
art, she realised the layers underneath the surface were most
important, and the sweetest.
One core distinction of Chinese classical dance is the
concept of bearing — the idea that each gesture, spin, physicality
and expression originates from the dancer’s spirit. It’s
like a wheel with bearing at its centre; the spokes — the
diverse characteristics of classical Chinese dance, such as a

「《 嫦 娥 奔 月 》 這 支 舞 蹈 讓 我
學 會 了 如 何 真 正 用 舞 蹈 去 表 達 自
己 的 情 感 , 表 達 喜 怒 哀 樂 , 怎 樣 真
正 去 跟 觀 眾 取 得 共 鳴 。」
——「 神 韻 藝 術 團 」 領 舞 演 員 王 琛 王 琛 沉 穩 地 說 :「 我 現 在 長 大 了 , 不 管 身 體 上 , 還 是 思
想 上 都 經 歷 了 一 些 歷 練 , 這 些 人 生 的 經 歷 會 直 接 反 應 在 舞 臺
上 。」 身 韻 是 中 國 古 典 舞 獨 有 的 特 色 , 是 演 員 內 在 的 情 感 通
過 身 法 釋 放 出 來 的 方 式 , 尤 其 在 中 國 古 典 舞 中 , 這 種 身 韻 還
有 著 中 國 人 幾 千 年 沉 澱 在 血 脈 裏 的 特 別 味 道 , 需 要 有 對 中 國
傳 統 文 化 的 深 刻 理 解 和 領 悟 方 可 呈 現 在 舞 蹈 動 作 中 。
王 琛 告 訴 我 們 , 在 「 神 韻 」 舞 劇 中 扮 演 角 色 時 , 這 種 對
人 物 背 景 特 質 和 內 心 情 感 的 感 同 身 受 , 以 及 通 過 舞 蹈 動 作
來 傳 遞 出 情 感 的 能 力 就 顯 得 格 外 重 要 。 大 約 在 三 、 四 年 前 ,
王 琛 第 一 次 演 繹 了 一 個 舞 劇 中 的 主 角 —— 穆 桂 英 , 說 到 當 時
的 表 現 , 王 琛 難 掩 遺 憾 之 情 。「 人 物 背 景 的 研 究 也 做 了 , 人
物 性 格 也 分 析 過 , 但 最 終 表 現 出 來 的 感 覺 很 單 薄 。 整 個 演 出
過 程 就 是 擔 心 、 難 過 、 振 作 , 很 簡 單 地 演 完 了 。 現 在 回 想 起
來 , 當 時 就 是 用 自 己 的 情 感 和 理 解 在 跳 穆 桂 英 這 個 角 色 。」
王 琛 說 自 己 沒 有 去 細 細 感 受 人 物 內 心 複 雜 的 情 感 , 也 沒 有 在
舞 蹈 動 作 中 添 加 足 夠 的 細 節 和 延 伸 , 來 表 達 出 穆 桂 英 那 超 越
一 般 女 子 的 勇 敢 、 堅 強 和 保 家 衛 國 的 大 義 。 好 在 她 很 快 得 到
了 一 個 彌 補 缺 憾 的 機 會 , 去 年 的 全 球 巡 演 中 , 王 琛 又 一 次 扮
演 了 舞 劇 中 的 主 角 , 而 這 次 她 要 挑 戰 的 是 神 話 傳 說 中 的 人
物 —— 嫦 娥 。
「 這 一 次 完 全 不 同 了 , 伴 奏 音 樂 我 聽 了 許 多 許 多 遍 , 去
從 中 體 會 人 物 的 情 緒 變 化 。 我 把 我 每 次 的 排 練 都 錄 下 來 , 回
去 研 究 自 己 的 動 作 。 還 會 跟 編 導 們 商 量 , 那 些 舞 蹈 動 作 該 怎
麼 處 理 , 怎 麼 和 音 樂 配 合 的 更 完 美 。 我 會 真 的 把 自 己 放 進 嫦
娥 中 去 演 繹 , 當 我 自 己 就 是 嫦 娥 。」 說 到 這 裏 王 琛 稍 稍 停 頓
了 一 下 , 然 後 認 真 地 說 , 她 近 些 年 裏 , 在 舞 蹈 方 面 取 得 的 最
大 的 收 穫 和 提 升 都 表 現 在 了 《 嫦 娥 奔 月 》 這 支 舞 中 。
「《 嫦 娥 奔 月 》 這 支 舞 蹈 讓 我 學 會 了 如 何 真 正 用 舞 蹈 去
表 達 自 己 的 情 感 , 表 達 喜 怒 哀 樂 , 怎 樣 真 正 去 跟 觀 眾 取 得 共
鳴 。 不 要 看 我 跳 了 這 麼 多 年 的 舞 , 之 前 也 取 得 了 一 些 成 績 ,
觀 眾 們 看 到 我 在 臺 上 笑 , 很 快 樂 , 都 覺 得 我 們 的 笑 容 很 有 感
染 力 。 但 實 際 上 , 過 去 的 我 並 不 是 先 讓 自 己 由 衷 地 快 樂 , 再
讓 肢 體 自 然 去 表 現 出 這 種 內 心 的 快 樂 。 而 是 很 刻 意 地 去 想 我
現 在 應 該 用 甚 麼 表 情 、 甚 麼 動 作 來 讓 觀 眾 知 道 我 現 在 表 演 的
是 快 樂 。」 王 琛 為 我 們 介 紹 說 , 中 國 古 典 舞 其 實 是 一 種 很 全
面 的 藝 術 形 式 , 就 是 可 以 通 過 肢 體 來 表 現 很 多 的 情 感 情 緒 和
很 多 不 同 的 人 物 , 可 以 講 述 內 容 豐 富 的 故 事 。 當 演 員 在 臺 上
完 全 投 入 進 角 色 的 表 演 中 , 臺 下 的 觀 眾 是 可 以 通 過 演 員 的 肢
體 動 作 清 晰 感 受 到 人 物 的 情 感 波 動 的 。
「 人 的 心 一 動 , 身 體 的 骨 骼 、 肌 肉 已 經 開 始 發 生 一 些
微 妙 的 變 化 , 這 時 候 已 經 把 信 息 傳 遞 出 去 了 , 不 需 要 刻 意 去
做 , 觀 眾 就 已 經 感 受 到 了 。 但 如 果 不 走 心 , 很 刻 意 去 做 動
作 , 那 觀 眾 一 看 可 能 覺 得 這 個 人 就 是 在 演 , 會 很 奇 怪 , 很 尷
尬 。」 王 琛 告 訴 我 們 , 當 她 領 悟 到 了 如 何 用 舞 蹈 來 表 達 自 己
內 心 真 實 的 感 受 時 , 感 覺 真 是 一 件 很 幸 福 的 事 。「 現 代 人 都
在 尋 求 一 些 情 感 宣 洩 的 方 式 , 比 如 : 自 己 的 開 心 啊 ! 對 生 活
不 滿 啊 !

但 他 們 很 難 找 到 合 適 的 方 式 , 就 會 做 出 一 些 極 端 的 舉
動 , 所 以 現 在 社 會 上 有 很 多 奇 怪 的 、 不 好 的 事 情 發 生 。 我
很 幸 運 找 到 了 舞 蹈 , 可 以 用 自 己 的 肢 體 去 表 達 。 如 果 我 是
一 個 演 奏 家 , 那 我 會 把 鋼 琴 彈 得 行 雲 流 水 , 那 也 是 一 種 情
感 的 出 口 , 那 也 很 好 。 希 望 大 家 都 可 以 找 到 這 樣 一 種 合 適
的 、 表 達 自 己 情 感 的 方 式 吧 !」
感 恩 珍 惜
在 王 琛 的 舞 蹈 生 涯
中 , 曾 三 次 奪 得 舞 蹈 大 賽
金 獎 。 分 別 是 在 2009 年
和 2010 年 榮 獲 第 三 、 第
四 屆 「 全 世 界 中 國 古 典 舞
大 賽 」 少 年 女 子 組 金 獎 ,
又 在 2012 年 第 五 屆 「 全
世 界 中 國 古 典 舞 大 賽 」 獲
得 了 青 年 女 子 組 金 獎 。 這
樣 驕 人 的 成 績 , 即 便 是 在
神 韻 藝 術 團 這 樣 全 世 界 最
頂 級 的 中 國 古 典 舞 團 體
中 , 也 顯 得 頗 令 人 矚 目 。
當 我 們 問 王 琛 是 否 會 在 得
獎 之 後 感 到 壓 力 , 有 自 己
必 須 比 別 人 做 得 好 等 想 法 時 。 王 琛 笑 言 , 可 能 因 為 很 早 就
當 上 了 領 舞 , 一 直 都 挺 受 矚 目 的 , 所 以 得 獎 前 得 獎 後 也 沒
甚 麼 太 大 的 差 別 。「 在 十 幾 歲 時 , 就 有 老 師 跟 我 講 『 學 跳
舞 要 先 學 做 人 』, 還 要 我 去 『 影 響 其 他 人 』。 就 是 說 , 如
果 有 些 人 別 人 注 意 他 比 較 多 , 會 影 響 到 別 人 , 那 這 個 人 就
得 做 得 更 好 一 些 。 那 時 候 可 能 不 是 太 願 意 承 擔 這 些 吧 ! 但
是 現 在 感 覺 自 己 就 是 得 到 的 比 別 人 多 , 如 果 別 人 想 通 過 向
你 學 習 做 的 更 好 , 那 你 就 要 做 的 更 好 。 這 不 僅 僅 是 一 種 壓
力 , 更 是 一 種 動 力 。」
王 琛 再 次 提 到 去 年 跳 《 嫦 娥 奔 月 》 那 隻 舞 時 , 一 些 真
切 的 內 心 感 受 。「 過 去 無 論 是 讓 我 當 領 舞 , 還 是 讓 我 演 甚
麼 角 色 , 我 沒 有 太 當 作 一 回 事 。 但 現 在 我 覺 得 這 是 一 個 很
珍 貴 的 機 會 , 因 為 我 年 齡 大 了 , 我 不 再 像 那 些 年 輕 的 孩 子
一 樣 , 有 那 麼 多 時 間 和 機 會 在 未 來 等 著 他 們 。 所 以 , 從 現
在 開 始 , 我 會 把 我 擁 有 的 每 一 個 角 色 , 每 一 分 、 每 一 秒 都
盡 力 做 到 最 好 , 表 現 的 更 完 美 。」
說 到 不 想 留 下 遺 憾 , 王 琛 還 講 到 自 己 出 國 後 有 一 個 心
中 一 直 的 痛 。「 我 小 時 候 生 活 在 古 城 西 安 , 滿 城 都 是 古
蹟 , 不 會 覺 得 那 是 很 古 老 、 很 稀 奇 的 東 西 。 兵 馬 俑 、 秦
始 皇 陵 , 我 都 沒 有 去 過 。 現 在 讀 到 那 些 歷 史 古 蹟 是 怎 麼 來
的 , 有 多 麼 宏 偉 , 就 感 覺 好 遺 憾 啊 !」
「 以 前 去 看 世 界 各 地 的 名 勝 古 蹟 , 就 是 走 馬 觀 花 。 現
在 就 會 提 前 去 瞭 解 那 裏 的 歷 史 背 景 , 細 細 去 看 那 一 磚 一
瓦 , 建 築 的 構 造 等 等 。 吃 東 西 也 會 去 找 那 種 特 色 小 店 ,
去 嚐 當 地 真 正 的 味 道 。 回 想 起 小 時 候 , 真 是 覺 得 自 己 那 時
好 無 知 , 像 是 浪 費 了 許 多 生 命 。 不 過 再 一 想 , 這 也 是 人 生
必 經 的 過 程 。 我 常 告 訴 自 己 , 沒 關 係 , 這 就 是 成 長 。 如 果
年 紀 那 麼 小 就 領 悟
到 太 多 東 西 , 也 活

「 首 先 , 我 們 在 舞 蹈 上 要 讓 人 家 看 得 心 服 口 服 , 要 是
頂 級 的 。 技 巧 、 技 術 、 身 韻 、 身 法 等 功 底 都 要 有 , 一 個
專 業 舞 蹈 團 體 應 具 備 的 , 我 們 都 具 備 。 第 二 , 我 們 在 舞
臺 上 表 現 一 個 舞 蹈 , 要 真 正 展 現 出 它 的 精 華 。 古 典 舞 就
是 古 典 舞 , 民 族 舞 就 是 民 族 舞 。 表 現 人 物 , 表 現 一 個 故 事
的 時 候 , 把 重 要 的 要 真 正 突 出 出 來 , 善 的 要 突 出 , 惡 也 要
突 出 , 讓 觀 眾 真 正 感 受 到 善 惡 的 對 比 , 知 道 裏 面 人 物 的 特
質 。 觀 眾 理 解 了 , 就 會 去 思 考 。 如 果 演 的 不 清 不 楚 , 觀 眾
稀 里 糊 塗 看 完 了 , 那 也 不 會 有 甚 麼 印 象 。」 王 琛 說 隨 著 演
出 經 驗 和 人 生 閱 歷 的 不 斷 豐 富 , 她 越 來 越 可 以 體 會 到 舞 蹈
表 演 中 從 感 情 到 動 作 中 那 些 更 細 膩 的 東 西 , 這 會 讓 她 更 完
美 地 演 繹 出 中 國 古 典 舞 那 最 令 人 神 往 和 陶 醉 的 獨 特 韻 味 ,
也 能 更 深 入 的 展 現 舞 蹈 背 後 的 文 化 內 涵 。
採 訪 的 最 後 , 當 我 們 問 起 王 琛 對 於 未 來 有 怎 樣 的 期
待 和 目 標 時 , 她 脫 口 而 出 :「 我 希 望 自 己 可 以 一 直 跳 舞
跳 下 去 , 能 跳 多 久 , 跳 多 久 。」 相 信 這 也 是 世 界 各 地 喜
愛 王 琛 的 觀 眾 們 的 共 同 心 願 。
「 過 去 無 論 是 讓 我 當 領 舞 , 還 是 讓 我 演 甚

It’s one reason why
classical Chinese dance
feels so different to
watch — because bearing
absolutely can’t be
faked. It’s a dancer’s sincere, intimate journey of the soul.
“If the dancers don’t use the heart, but act it deliberately,
the audience will feel they are acting,” says Wang. “It will look
awkward and embarrassing.”
While mastery of acrobatic flips and movements impossible
to some came easily to Wang, cultivating her bearing was a
slower process that required enlightenment as much as practice.
“I had studied the background of the role and analyzed
her character, but what
I represented was still
too simple,” says Wang
of her portrayal four
years ago of Mu Guiying,
the quintessential
honourable woman.

not only cultivate their
moral fiber to elevate
their bearing, they do so to better understand the tremendous
depth of the legendary characters in their plays. Wang said
the subtle physicalities of the character’s courage, fortitude
and righteousness that inspired Mu to defend her homeland
were missing.
But no one can doubt Wang’s own resolve, and with inner
growth came external improvement. During last year’s global
tour, Wang had the opportunity to portray Chang’E, the

moon goddess, and she threw her whole heart into it.
“I heard the accompanying music many, many times to
understand the changes of the character’s emotions,” says
Wang. She recorded every rehearsal, studying them with
choreographers to perfectly harmonise emotion, movement
and music. “I really put myself into the shoes of Chang’E.”
Wang’s devotion to forging a stronger bond between spirit
and body was transformative, both for her, personally, and for
those watching.
“My performance was completely
different this time,” says Wang. “I

the right message.”
This effortless interplay of mind and motion added a dimension
to dance that Wang cherishes now more than ever.
“In the past, whether I was made to be the lead dancer or
play another role, I didn’t care too much. But now I regard
the lead as a precious opportunity. From now on, I try my
best to perform perfectly for every role, every minute, and
every second I get.”
Outside in
In her quest to cultivate her craft by looking inside, Wang
also looks outside herself, finding new sources of inspiration for
growth. Mentoring the next generation of Shen Yun dancers
is “a learning process for me, which enriches my experience.”
Seeing through another’s eyes helps her become more
selfless. “I have to help them according to their individual
needs to solve their problems,” says Wang. And the advice of
one of her teachers often echoes in her mind.
“When I was a teen, one teacher told me that if I wanted to
learn dance, I had to learn to be a good person first, and then
to influence others,” she says. “It’s not just a kind of pressure
but a driving force.”
A newfound adoration for heritage has also become an
integral component in her dancer’s toolbox, allowing her to
better understand the rich complexity of the characters she
portrays on stage.
“When I visited historical sites around the world in the
past, I just browsed them,” says Wang. “Now I learn the historical
background in advance and carefully watch everything,
such as the bricks and tiles and the
construction of the architecture. I

can’t perform in the birthplace of
this beautiful culture. Since the Cultural Revolution in the
’60s, the communist regime has waged war on China’s sacred
traditions.
This, coupled with missed opportunities in her youth, has
left a pain in her heart. “I lived in the ancient city of Xi’an
when I was young,” says Wang. “Because historic monuments
were all over the city, I didn’t feel they were rare.” Not visiting
the famous Terracotta Army or the Mausoleum of the First
Qin Emperor has left her “feeling so regretful.” So for now,
Wang experiences her homeland’s majestic culture on stage
with the rest of the world, a gift for her as much as them.
“Modern people always look for ways to vent their emotions,
such as happiness and dissatisfaction with life,” says Wang.
“But it’s hard for them to find an adequate way, so they might
do something extreme. As a result, many strange and bad
things happen in society. I’m lucky to find dance to express
myself with my body.”
A joy and authenticity radiate from her, giving new meaning
to the words “legendary character.” She smiles. “I hope I can
always dance. I will dance however long I can.”

Now with 15 years of experience as a TV chef, Dina
Nikolaou laughs to recall her trepidation the first
time she appeared on screen. She had 13 minutes
to prepare a chocolate dessert and, she says, “The instructions
I had from the director were clear: the TV does not love
silence, so you must talk constantly.”
“I was sweating. I felt I didn’t have enough oxygen,” she
says. “The last thing I was thinking about was talking.”
But the camera started rolling, and “at that moment, everything
magically changed,” she says. “It was me, my chocolate,
and my passion, and I just shared it with the audience.”
Nikolaou’s passion for the cuisine of her native Greece
has earned her a reputation as Greece’s gastronomic ambassador.
She studied culinary arts at top schools in Paris,
and her restaurant, Evi Evane, is also in Paris. But her tastes
remain truly Greek.
In 2017, prominent food critic Gilles Pudlowski declared
Evi Evane the best foreign-cuisine restaurant in Paris.
Many “Greek” restaurants abroad have menus that are
actually more Mediterranean, Nikolaou says. They prepare
foods from other Mediterranean countries with “some Greek
touches,” for supposedly wider appeal.

But she and Maria Nikolaou — her sister and Evi Evane’s
co-owner — decided from the beginning to keep their
kitchen truly Hellenic. They have drawn on the diverse
foods available in different regions of Greece, “without
succumbing to the sirens who have advised us to go with
the Mediterranean cuisine,” she says.
Nikolaou takes us on a sweeping tour, naming some characteristic
foods in various regions of Greece. On the island
of Syros, she has savoured louza — preserved pork similar
to the Italian prosciutto, but flavoured with cinnamon and
clove. Each Greek Island puts its own touch on the process of
curing the pork. For example, instead of cinnamon and clove,
the islanders on Tinos add fennel seeds and strong red wine.
In the village of Nea Karvali in Northern Greece, Nikolaou
has enjoyed kourabiedes — traditional Christmas cookies
made with almonds. In Prespa, which borders Albania and
Macedonia, she has tasted some of the best beans in the
world. This region has a microclimate and soil composition
perfectly suited for growing delicious beans.
In general, she says, key ingredients in a Greek kitchen
include olive oil, aromatic plants, and leafy vegetables. “A
Greek kitchen is wise, intelligently managing its vegetables
and pulses,” she says.
Her cooking isn’t just about being Greek. It’s also about
being Dina Nikolaou, an individual who leaves her personal
touch on traditional favourites. “The dishes that every cook
makes are her mirror,” she says. “[My dishes] show my
journeys, my femininity, my dreams.”

Preparation:
For the custard:
Heat the milk and half the sugar in a medium
saucepan on low.
Meanwhile, in a bowl, mix the remaining sugar,
semolina flour, vanilla, lemon zest, and eggs with a
hand mixer until well mixed. Then, while mixing
constantly at low speed, pour the warm milk, a
portion at a time, into the bowl, mixing after each
until smooth. Pour the mixture into the saucepan
and stir briskly with a wooden spoon on low heat
until the cream coagulates and starts bubbling.
Remove from heat. Add the butter and stir well to
homogenize, then set aside to cool.
For the whipped cream:
In a clean bowl, mix the whipping cream and
powdered sugar with the mixer until fluffy.
For the syrup:
Put the sugar, water, and lemon juice in a medium
saucepan and boil for 5 or 6 minutes. Remove from
heat and let the syrup cool completely.
For the base:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly butter a glass baking
dish, and spread the kataifi dough with the hands
to cover the bottom. Pour the melted butter over
the dough, and bake for 15 minutes, or until just
beginning to brown and dry out. Remove from
oven, and while hot, pour the cooled syrup over it.
Let sit for 5 minutes.
Assembly:
Spread the kataifi and syrup onto the bottom of
an 8" round cake pan with a removable bottom.
Alternatively, use a baking sheet and an 8" cake ring.
Pour the custard over the kataifi, and smooth it
with a spatula.
Spread the whipped cream on top, lifting it with a
fork to make peaks, or it can be piped on. Chill in the
refrigerator for at least an hour, until the custard is firm.
Remove the circular sides of the pan (or lift off the
ring) and sprinkle the surface with grated pistachios
and sweet cinnamon. Add several small tufts of
cotton candy for extra flavour and colour (optional).
Serve immediately.

and Saronic Gulf as well as Porto Cheli. Foreign and local
businessmen have invested time, energy and money in order

VIPs, international tycoons, royal families and people from
the global jet set,” he adds.
Luxury Concierge was also founded as a luxury products
specialist and established “Greek Luxury Products” in 2015, the
newest member of the company. They have gathered together

As Stasinopoulos explains, Greece used to be famous for
its extra virgin olive oil, the olives, honey, and so on, but now
a whole variety of more upscale products have been added
to its gastronomic repertoire: early harvest olive oil; vanilla
honey from Mainalon PDO, the only similar honey to the
Australian manuka honey; wild strawberries from Corfu;
and the amazing Aegean Sea fish and seafood, which due to
the properties of the sea and the climate have a unique taste.
“These products are commonly widespread among connoisseurs,
and along with many others, they exist here in
this blessed country,” Stasinopoulos says.
“Among the landmark products we represent exclusively
for Greece and Cyprus it’s worth mentioning No1 Rosemary

in Italy and, hundreds of years later, has become the hottest

In the last few years, there has been a new gastronomical
entry to Greece: the world-renowned caviar. Since ancient
times and the era of Archistratus, the first chef of Antiquity,
Greeks have shown a great interest in sturgeon eggs
coming from the Black Sea.
Now, 2,500 years later, caviar
is coming back, not as an imported
product but via domestic
production.
Throughout Greek caviar’s
20-year modern history,
Ioannis Varvakis has been a
major source of inspiration, as a pioneer of the vacuum
food preservation process. Based on this method, the
international distribution of caviar started. Therefore, it is
normal to consider Varvakis the father of caviar.
Thesauri, which is the company that has started farming
and producing the very first Greek caviar, chose the coast of
Amvrakikos on which to build its ultra-modern facilities, ensuring
an endless source of clean water of the highest quality.
“Caviar is not just a product of pleasure, but a tribute to
history and gastronomy,” Stasinopoulos says.

However, what makes Greece important and well known
for its products is the diamond of gastronomy: the truffle.
“The ancient Romans used to request truffles from Greece
and especially from Mytilini, as they were considered to be
products of the highest quality. Since the second millennium
BC, mushrooms were known for their therapeutic properties.
According to Plutarch, truffles were made out of clay that
had been baked by lightning,” Stasinopoulos says.
“In the modern era, the focus was transferred to Italy,
firstly because of the discovery of the white truffle of Alba
and the black truffle in Piedmont, and secondly because of
the very good marketing of the product,” he adds. “But in
recent years, there is a very interesting movement in Greece
relative to this underground treasure.”
“Apart from its wild form,
which is found in almost all
parts of Greece, there is also
arable land. With the onset of
the economic crisis, more and
more compatriots chose to deal
with this subject, either as producers
or as hunters. Especially
in Macedonia, people can find the rarest variety of truffles,
which is the white one. In Crete, the black summer truffle
is associated with local gastronomy and exists in excess,”
Stasinopoulos explains.
Greek truffles are highly competitive because of their
price and excellent quality, and are therefore exported to
Europe and America.
These are two of the greatest examples that show that
Greece is not only about olive oil and feta cheese, but is a gastronomic
journey worthy of the highest world standards..

The enchanting scenery of the volcanic Santorini Island—its

surge of warm water fell on my shoulders, with a
rushing sensation that invited me to drop every tension.
As I sat lightly in a lively swirl of 32⁰C waters,
the rapid stream from the pool’s mushroom-shaped waterfall
continued to gush down around me, and I tuned out the world.
Sliding into a warm bath after a long day is a classic form of
relaxation, but the experience of a thermal pool soak in healing
natural waters takes the mind and body to another level. Since
ancient times, this ritual has been the prescription of choice
for Greece. From aromatic baths to relaxing soaks and warm
pools, Greece’s natural thermal waters continue to help people
achieve a healthy body and calm mind, and are the basis of a
natural spa trail that has existed for thousands of years.
Throughout the history of the area, anyone who explored it
became fascinated by these waters, which were said to be miraculous.
More than 115 natural therapeutic springs, thermal
and mineral, dot Greece, and several have been transformed
into luxurious spa destinations.
At one of the top resorts on Greece’s natural spa trail,
Thermae Sylla on Evia Island, the source of water is hot
springs once known as the Herculean Thermae. According to
Greek mythology, Hercules, the strongest of all men, would
soak in the waters to regain his powers. Aristotle, one of the
greatest philosophers of all time, visited the springs, saying
they were the most powerful known to man, and Hippocrates,
the most celebrated physician of antiquity, attested to their
healing powers for skin diseases and muscular pains. Later,
the Roman General Sylla famously found relief for his skin
ailments here, which inspired the name of the modern spa.
Later on, I stepped out of the Thermae Sylla’s main building,
a stately 19th-century neoclassical mansion, and was ready for
another soak — this time right at the source. Standing on the
marbled balcony, I breathed in the fresh air wafting in over the
Aegean Sea, which seemed to stretch infinitely before me. I
stepped down to the coast, a rocky ledge of erupting hot springs
set in a haphazard form of several dozen pockmarks in the
earth. I felt like I was stepping on another planet as I carefully
tiptoed barefoot around each crater, where curls of steam rose
high. I headed to one, gingerly testing the temperature with
my toe, then within minutes, I was up to my neck, settled into
the natural plunge pool. As the calescent waters gurgled calmly
about me, I leaned back and listened to the cool sea lapping
its waves in familiar rhythm.

Back on the trail, an array of luxury spa treatments
promised a bit of modern indulgence, from silky milk
baths to smooth chocolate scrubs, while still remaining
true to the age-old principles of relaxation for body
and mind. As Hippocrates famously said, “The way
to health is to have an aromatic bath and a scented
massage every day.”
In one of those indulgent moments, I slathered a thick
grey dollop of therapeutic mineral mud, odourless and
creamy, over my bare legs and the rest of my body as part
of the rasul treatment at the five-star Galini Wellness
Spa & Resort in Central Greece. As the mud dried and
gripped my body, my eyelids began feeling luxuriously
heavy. I tilted my head upwards to gaze at my private
spa chamber’s lights, twinkling like stars on the domed
ceiling. I gave in and let my eyes slowly shut. The air
remained comfortably warm, slightly thick and misty,
as an exotic domed centrepiece released steam infused
with relaxing aromas. I half dozed until the dome
gently sprayed out a warm rain shower, washing away
the mud to unveil my newly soft and deeply cleansed
skin. These thermal waters are from the hot springs at
the foot of Mount Knimis, not far from Thermopylae,
“the hot gates,” which was the historic setting of the
Greek victory against the Persians in 480 B.C.
I finished the day with a final nighttime soak at
Galini’s softly lit indoor thermal pool. In a state of
appreciating the calm warmth of the room, I wondered
who could argue with this ancient recipe for wellness?
The ambient lighting danced on the water, a healthy
mist blurred any more thoughts, and the notion of time
wafted away.

不 過 在 出 發 之 前 , 隨 行 的 自 然 學 者 Yajuvendra

的 老 虎 的 , 我 們 大 家 還 是 應 抱 著 瞭 解 當 地 獨 特 的 整 體 生 態
系 統 的 態 度 去 享 受 此 次 旅 程 。 然 而 事 實 證 明 ,Yaju 顯 然 低

Our van pulled up to the park gates at 2 p.m. We had
been broken into groups the night before, and over gin
and tonics at the lodge, our assigned naturalists showed
us maps of the parks and pictures of the wildlife we might see.
The parks of the northern province of Madhya Pradesh are
teeming with endless exotic species of flora and fauna, but we
were mainly concerned with one: tigers.
At the briefing, our naturalist Yajuvendra Upadhyaya (Yaju to
us) attempted to set reasonable expectations. The purpose of our
next day’s journey would be to experience an immersion into a
radically different ecosystem, and although tracked electronically
by the park, tigers were rarely seen on expeditions relying on
human eyes and ears like ours. There could be months between
sightings, and the group today had been lucky enough to spot
one — the odds were stacked against us.
Yaju cheerfully collected us at the gates and we loaded into
a convertible jeep with stadium seating to ensure views were
excellent for everyone. He was in the front, the driver, armed
with his trusty camera. Behind us was the tracker. They communicated
only in Hindi with each other, and while our guide

was young and enthusiastic, you could tell the tracker had
been listening to these jungles for decades. We thundered
off through the gates and down sand pathways forged
in the dense wood. Yaju pointed out rare indigenous
tree species, birds some of my car mates seemed excited
about, and a deer that looked exactly like the ones I had
grown up with in Ohio. I checked my watch — nearly
two hours left to go. It was a pleasant afternoon, but not
being particularly outdoorsy, after a few monkeys and
some alligators we saw after taking a short boat ride down
a tranquil river, I was ready to head back.
Then we heard it. A shriek from a nearby bird. Yaju explained
that this was a distress call, and it almost certainly
meant a big cat had been sighted. The tracker yelled to drive
faster down the path to our right. We were in pursuit of a
threat, not even knowing what animal we were chasing.
A few other groups had heard the same calls and soon
we were clustered in a valley, all frantically searching the
dense hill in front of us.

The only sound that could be heard was the quiet hum
of the jeeps. Yaju maneuvered around the other vehicles
and followed a narrow sand path at the side of the hill. He
explained that the tigers preferred walking on the soft sand
of the man-made lanes instead of the forest underbrush, due
to the soft pads of their paws. And sure enough, about three
minutes later, a lanky tigress walked into the road maybe 20
metres in front of us. There was a flutter to get cameras and
lenses adjusted to capture this majestic creature. We followed
the elegant feline quietly, kept our distance, and eventually
lowered our cameras to enjoy a peaceful, mindful coexistence
with the tigress. And then we let her carry on.
Back at the luxuriously appointed lodge, we told stories of
our sightings to each other and shared blurry photos (luckily,
Yaju captured the animal brilliantly and had our email addresses).
I was now a safari junkie, so absolutely won over by
the thrill of the chase and the notion that these magnificent
creatures and I existed in the same unfettered space if even
for a few moments.

In an effort to learn more, I posed some questions to our naturalist
Yaju:
What is your favourite part about the job?
In the beginning, it was the whole idea of living in complete
wilderness that attracted me to this career, living in a forest filled
with wild animals, unreliable electricity, no mobile networks. Now
I enjoy being in the forest early in the morning with the dawn
birds’ chorus and the other sounds of the forest, and amidst that,
tracking a tiger in the wild.
So we’re in the jeep. What next? How do you know where to go and
what you’re looking for?
Unlike in Africa, use of walkie talkies is prohibited during safaris
in India. Every day we have to rely on fresh tiger tracks and alarm
calls to track predators.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen in the park?
In the beginning of this year, we encountered two massive male
tigers fighting in an open meadow — it was a bloodied battle.
Can you speak a little to the state of tiger safaris in India and the
tigers themselves?
Well, tiger safaris in India are getting popular, but at the same
time, our forests are shrinking every day. But you learn so much
more about a tiger watching it hunt than you ever could in a zoo,
so it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be in the forest, see these
animals in their habitat, and learn about the natural world as you
become a part of it.
