I
called our daughter late in the day last
Friday with a quick question.
From the way her phone was picking up
the sound of the wind, I knew she was outdoors.
“Where are you
headed?” I asked.
“Mikayla and I are
going to eat early,
then we’re headed to
Hilton Madness for
the dunk contest,” she
explained.
“That sounds like
fun,” I said. “It’s going
to be a busy weekend
with both basketball
and football.”
“And we have a social
Sunday night,” she
added. “But I have to run.”
With that she was gone.
A couple hours later we got a message
from our son, also a student at Iowa State.
It was a picture of our daughter courtside at
Hilton, ready to serve as a student judge for
the dunk contest.
Not long after that my phone dinged
again. This time it was a message from my
brother-in-law, an ISU engineering alum
and fan of all things Cyclone. He sent a link
to the Des Moines Register’s website where
there was a series of 20 or so photos from
the basketball kickoff, including a photo of
the judges holding up their score cards.
Our son chimed in one more time that
evening saying “She’s a tough judge.”
Katie later defended herself to Lindell
Wigginton, when he protested her score.
“There’s always room for improvement,”
she told him as she stood her ground as the
lone judge holding up a “9” compared to all
the others with the “10” card.
I think she got back on his good side
though, as she gave him a “10” on another
attempt later in the evening.

the fall and win ter months with Science
on the Menu.
The first it er a tion of this new endeav
or will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday,
Oct. 23 in side Lakeside Lab’s
his tor ic din ing hall.
“We de cid ed we re al ly want ed to
have that op por tu ni ty to do something
fun and in ter est ing in the cold er
months, and we just think that the
speak er se ries is re al ly popu lar and that
we could pair it with a meal and make
it more of an e vent,” said Mary Skopec,
ex ec u tive di rec tor at Lakeside Lab.
For now, Science on the Menu is
slat ed to go through at least De cember.
Skopec said that as the weath er
gets more chal len ging it may be more
in ter est ing get ting peo ple over to
Lakeside, so they’ll see how it goes
with the first cou ple be fore sched uling
more.
O rig i nal ly set for this first round
was Jo seph Otto, a wa ter specialist
with the I o wa En vi ron men tal Council,
but a late sched ul ing con flict will
see him like ly vis it in the spring or
sum mer in stead.
In his place will be Mike Haw kins,
fish er ies bi ol o gist with the I o wa Department
of Nat u ral Resources.
“Mike is going to step in and we’re
call ing it ‘A Day in the Life of a Fisher
ies Bi ol o gist,’” Skopec said. “A lot of
peo ple know Mike and have seen his
pres en ta tions but don’t know all the
ins and outs of the fish er ies job, so
it’ll be an in sid er view of what his job
looks like.”
Some of the top ics of dis cus sion

e lec tric fish bar ri er and over all lake
health.
“The fish er ies world has gone from
just think ing a bout the game fish
to the over all health of the lake and
how to en sure that,” Skopec said.
“We’re going to talk a bout all kinds
of in ter est ing things. Mike is re al ly
know ledge able and will be a fan tas tic
speak er.”
On the meal side of things, Skopec
said it will be pre pared in­house and
fo cus on a har vest theme.
“It will be seas on al vege tables, season
al food, may be ap ple crisp, may be
some thing with squash, things that
are re al ly fun and heart y and warm,”
Skopec said.
It will be a sit­down, plat ed meal
with appetizers and so cial time before
hand.
Those in ter est ed are asked to call
a head to place res er va tions by Fri day
with the cost of the e vent at $15 per
per son.
“It’s going to be a phe nom e nal
e vent. The din ing hall has a beau ti ful
view of the lake, so peo ple will get to
en joy that view and en joy a spe cial
meal,” Skopec said. “Our stu dents
know this, but it will great to bring
the com muni ty to share with them as
well. It should be a fun, cozy eve ning
and we hope peo ple come out and
en joy it with us.” F

harvest is the pinnacle of
fall fun.
Round Lake Vineyards & Winery is
inviting visitors to enjoy the bounty
with their second
annual
Field to Feast
Dinner.
The event will
take place Thursday,
Oct. 25
starting at 6 p.m.
with welcome
cocktails leading
into the culinary
experience at
6:30 p.m.
Space is limited
and reservations
must be
made ahead of
time. The cost is
$65 per person
with a discount
for Flock Wine
Club members.
“Last year they had a very
good turnout and people
that attended had a great
time. We’ve already had
some people contact us
already about coming back
to the event,” said Vanessa
Moore, marketing and
brand manager at Round
Lake Vineyards.
“We are at end of our
harvest. We have 30 acres of vines and
grapes and the team works tirelessly,
so we are celebrating harvest here
as well. We do a public celebration
with the Grape Stomp, then gather
ourselves again and put together this
really nice meal to kind of celebrate
and highlight features of our wine.”
The five-course menu is still in
development, though they have announced
that Beef Wellington will be
the main entree.
The meal will be prepared by the
winery’s in-house chef.
Each course will be paired with one
of Round Lake’s most popular wines.

We are at end of our harvest. We have 30 acres of vines and
grapes and the team works tirelessly, so we are
celebrating harvest here as well. We do a public
celebration with the Grape Stomp, then gather ourselves
again and put together this really nice meal to kind of
celebrate and highlight features of our wine.

Moore said they hope to have
either the owners, Scott and Jenny
Ellenbecker or winemaker Logan Ellenbecker,
on hand to talk about each
food and wine pairing.
“I’ve grown to love all the wines,
though I haven’t tasted all of them
yet,” Moore said. “I love having Logan,
Scott or Jenny explain how each
one of their wines pairs with different
foods and how each one can taste
different with different food. You can
always learning something, so I’m
excited about that.”
Ahead of the meal will be welcome
cocktails giving everyone in attendance
a chance to get to know each
other.
“It’s a banquet setting, served family
style at a table you may share with
other groups. The cocktail hour gives
you a chance to chat for awhile,”
Moore said. “We get people from Minnesota,
Iowa, South Dakota. It’s a nice
mix of groups and fun way to meet
new people too.”
It’s all about bonding over the
bounty of fall harvest. Great wine,
fantastic food. Sounds like a great way
to spend a crisp autumn evening near

History isn’t just a class in school.
It has the ability to come alive.
And that is what Millie Vos, who
serves as the director of the Sheldon
Prairie Museum and as the secretary/
treasurer of the Sheldon Historical
Society, is hoping will happen on
Tuesday, Oct. 23.
Leo Landis, the curator for the State
Historical Museum of Iowa, will
present “Tales from the Vault” at the
Crossroads Pavilion Event Center in
Sheldon at 3 and 6:30 p.m.
“This program that he’ll be doing
features 650 items that he either can
show us on his computer or brings

with him such as toys, posters, signs
and more,” said Vos.
“It will reflect a range of Iowa history
and the artifacts will tell us about
the people of Iowa and about our past
and some things about our future
too.”
Landis has been to Sheldon twice
before to lead presentations about
other facets of Iowa’s rich history.
“He did a presentation on the
movie stars of Iowa and he did one
last year on World War II and even
described some things that I don’t
remember,” Vos said. “He travels
through the state with these traveling
builders

exhibits, giving demonstrations and
brings artifacts too.”
This upcoming presentation has
Vos excited to learn something new.
“He will show us something that we
have probably never seen — toys we
don’t even realize were available back
then or posters that are really unique,”
Vos said. “He is knowledgeable. He
always asks if people have questions
— even if it’s about things he hasn’t
even talked about, and he can usually
answer them.”
Bringing history to life and encouraging
others to learn something from
it is what Vos through her work with
the Sheldon Prairie Museum and
Sheldon Historical Society works to
do as much as she can.
“We want to educate people about
the past and let them know some of

Generations of family fun
Hoeflings have run pumpkin patch for two decades
Family fun has been had for generations
at the Hoefling Pumpkin
Patch & Corn Maze.
Alan and Geralyn Hoefling have
owned and operated the facility near
Marcus, IA for 22 years.
It all began when they wanted a
place to take their own family for a
day of fun, entertainment and education.
It has since grown to include more
than 100 varieties
of pumpkins
and gourds,
three corn mazes,
fall décor,
toys, honey,
baked goods,
hay rack rides
and much more.
“I wanted
a place where
families could
come enjoy
the weekend,
bring the kids
and learn how
I wanted a place where
families could come enjoy
the weekend, bring

pumpkins grow.
Geralyn Hoefling
pumpkins grow,” Geralyn said. “We
started with just orange and white
pumpkins and couple hay bales out
front. We try to add something new
each year and now we have 15 varieties
of mini pumpkins alone. For big
pumpkins we have orange, white,
green, bluish, yellow — all in different
sizes and shapes.”
They’ve started growing squash as
well. Geralyn sees a lot of customers
buying them simply for decoration
and kindly reminds them that when
the decorations come down they can
eat them too.
The first corn maze was added to
the offerings in 2005 and they’ve since
grown there as well.
“We started with just the daytime
maze. Then we added the haunted
maze and a lighted corn maze. There
are no spooks on that one so it’s not
too scary for kids,” Geralyn said.
There is no gate fee to enter
Hoefling’s Pumpkins Patch. A journey
through the corn mazes costs $4 for
the daytime version, $5 for the lighted
maze and $6 for the haunted version.
During the daytime families can
also enjoy hay rides, bean bag toss
and other games and even learn a bit
about the history of farming. Geralyn,
a former preschool teacher, is especially
fond of the latter.
“In keeping with a bit of education
we have a could old hand corn shellers
and an antique corn sorter,” Geralyn
“They can turn the crank on that
and it spits corn out. Kids love stuff
like that.”
After all their years in operation, the
Hoeflings are now welcoming a new
generation of kids at the pumpkin
patch.
Customers who visited as children
every year are now coming back with
their own children in tow.
“For me the biggest thing is just seeing
people happy to be here, enjoying
the day and enjoying their family
time,” Geralyn said.
Her own children have grown up
with the pumpkin patch as well. They
continue to come back and help on
the weekends and still pick out their
pumpkins from the family farm.
It’s a nonstop job from the moment
the seeds go into the ground until
they close the doors on Oct. 31.
Until then, the Hoeflings invite
families from near and far to come enjoy
a fun-filled day at their pumpkin
patch. F

Estherville to host annual Halloween hike on Oct. 27
The Estherville Chamber of Commerce
will once again be hosting
their annual Fright Hike through Fort
Defiance State Park from 6-9:30 p.m.

Fort Defiance State Park is going
to be a downright scary spot next
weekend.
This will be the sixth year that Fort
Defiance will play host to the Fright
Hike hosted by the Estherville Chamber
of Commerce. The spookiness will
run from 6-9:30 p.m. on Saturday,
Oct. 27.
The Fright Hike is a roughly
3/4-mile hike through the woods of
Fort Defiance, which will be studded
with groups acting out scary scenes
as well as individuals waiting in the
shadows for the chance to scare your
socks off.
Every year, the hike is a little different
and has some new features.
“We always have a few new things.
We have a great group of volunteers
that does a different set every year.
They’ve done beheadings and had a
pendulum swinging blade and I think
this year they are working on an electric

since it started and last year they
reached 900 people.

Last year, in an attempt to help
combat the large crowd and to give
the little kids a chance to go through
the Fright Hike, the organizers started
a lights-on hour from 6-7 p.m.
“We have the lights on the first
hour and the volunteers are way less
scary during that time,” Ruter said.
“We have little kids who wanted to go
through but it was just too scary for
them so this enables them to enjoy
the Fright Hike too.”
The cost to enjoy the Fright Hike is
only $5 per person and they do have a
rain date set for Sunday, Oct. 28.
This event is one that Ruter enjoys
every year.
“I love to hear the stories afterward
when people get a really good scare,”
Ruter said. “I always enjoy seeing the
creativity of our volunteers. I’m not

The Spencer Jaycees are getting
ready to scare your socks off.
Their annual Nightmare at the
Fair haunted house will take place at
the Clay County Fairground’s Tower
Gate Pavilion for two weekends including
Oct. 19-20, Oct. 26-27 as well
as on Halloween night Oct. 31.
The event runs from 8 p.m.-midnight
during the weekend and on
Halloween night they are open from
7 p.m.-10 p.m.
They are not just using Halloween
to scare people. They will be using all
of the holidays.
“The theme this year is ‘Haunted
Holidays,’” said Andrew Colbert, who
is a Spencer Jaycees member and is
the chair of this event. “It is a tour
through all of the typical fun, happy
holidays throughout the year, but
with a twist! Let’s just say the Easter
bunny is not cute and cuddly like
most people would think.”
The Spencer Jaycees have been
creating a haunted house experience
for Halloween since the 1980s and
this will be the fifth year that they’ve
hosted the event at the Clay County
Fairgrounds.
It’s not something that comes together
overnight either.
The Spencer Jaycees and volunteers
will work for about three weeks to create
the “Haunted Holidays” structure
and decorating for the event. Over the
course of the event, they host upward
of 700-800 people.
