NIGHTMARE
A T T H E F A I R
The Spencer Jaycees are getting
ready to scare your socks off.
Their annual Nightmare at the
Fair haunted house will take place at
the Clay County Fairground’s Tower
Gate Pavilion for two weekends including
Oct. 19-20, Oct. 26-27 as well
as on Halloween night Oct. 31.
The event runs from 8 p.m.-midnight
during the weekend and on
Halloween night they are open from
7 p.m.-10 p.m.
They are not just using Halloween
to scare people. They will be using all
of the holidays.
“The theme this year is ‘Haunted
Holidays,’” said Andrew Colbert, who
is a Spencer Jaycees member and is
the chair of this event. “It is a tour
through all of the typical fun, happy
holidays throughout the year, but
with a twist! Let’s just say the Easter
bunny is not cute and cuddly like
most people would think.”
The Spencer Jaycees have been
creating a haunted house experience
for Halloween since the 1980s and
this will be the fifth year that they’ve
hosted the event at the Clay County
Fairgrounds.
It’s not something that comes together
overnight either.
The Spencer Jaycees and volunteers
will work for about three weeks to create
the “Haunted Holidays” structure
and decorating for the event. Over the
course of the event, they host upward
of 700-800 people.
Admission is $10 or $7 with a
Spencer Jaycees host
two weekends of
haunted house
donation of two nonperishable,
non-expired canned food items for
Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc.
Proceeds support the Spencer Jaycees
community efforts including the annual
Tree of Joy.
“The Haunted House is one of our
biggest events and we raise a good
portion of money to help us prepare
for our Tree of Joy, where we deliver
toys and food to families here in our
community around Christmastime,”
Colbert said. “We also take canned
As much work as this event takes
every year to do, the organizers really
do enjoy participating in the event as
well.
“I think one of the best parts is
hearing the excitement that our
visitors have as they make it through
the maze getting scared, of course,
the scaring part is fun, too,” Colbert
said. F
