NBL BECOMING A
JUGGERNAUT
SAYS FORMER AFL CLUB CAPTAIN
As published on SEN.com.au
Garry Lyon says the NBL is starting to
become a bit of a “juggernaut”, after the
league broke records in the first round of
the new season.
Across the opening slate of games of
the 2018/19 NBL campaign, 48,820 fans
attended, the highest Round 1 attendance in
the league’s history.
Lyon explained how the energy during the
Melbourne United v New Zealand Breakers
match on Sunday 14th was palpable
through the coverage.
“The last 20 minutes of Melbourne versus
New Zealand…it was going off,” Lyon told
SEN Breakfast.
“This is a bit of a juggernaut, the NBL. The
atmosphere and the buzz was coming
through the television.”
Former Essendon captain Tim Watson said
the NBL is becoming more “visible” in the
public, which is a positive development for
the league.
Round 1 of NBL19 saw the league smash
the record for the highest attendance for an
opening round of a season.
A total of 48,820 fans watched round 1 of
the 2018/19 season, breaking the previous
record of 48,007 set in 1995. It was the third
highest attendance for any round since the
NBL started in 1979.

THE 2017-18
GRAND FINAL REMATCH
After slogging it out in a five-game Grand
Final series last season, Melbourne
United and the Adelaide 36ers come
head-to-head for the first time in NBL
season 2018-19.
There were fireworks, tussles, ejections and
plenty of trash talk last season between
these two teams and you can expect a
fierce battle at Melbourne Arena.
It’s a Grand Final re-match that isn’t short
on storylines or match-ups to keep an eye
on.
Adelaide head into the game having played
Friday night against the Sydney Kings at
home, while Melbourne will head in having
a week to prepare after a loss to the New
Zealand Breakers at home last Sunday.
The likes of Mitch Creek, Josh Childress and
Shannon Shorter are no longer in Adelaide,
but Nathen Sobey, Daniel Johnson, Ramone
Moore, Majok Deng and Anthony Drmic
have been joined by imports Jacob Wiley
and Adris DeLeon.
The 36ers are a team that love to get out
and run and push the pace.
Daniel Johnson is one of the premier big
men in Australia and the battle between he
and Josh Boone will play a massive role in
the outcome of the game. Career averages
of 14 points and 6.4 rebounds showcase
Johnson’s abilities on both ends of the court,
but what the stats don’t show is the way
he anchors their defence.

Boone and Johnson will be battling in the
paint all afternoon and with Melbourne
looking to improve their rebounding, and not
allow nearly as many offensive rebounds as
they did in round 1, it will take not just Boone,
but the likes of Alex Pledger, Dave Barlow,
Tohi Smith-Milner and Dan Trist to help out in
that facet of the game.
The backcourt battle will be as important as
ever.
Casper Ware and Chris Goulding taking on
Nathan Sobey and Ramone Moore. There
is so much speed and scoring ability, as
well as playmaking in both backcourts and
whenever Boomer teammates Goulding and
Sobey go head-to-head, everyone watching
gets more than their money’s worth.
He is versatile and capable of defending
point guards through to forwards. Against
the Hawks in the quadruple overtime thriller,
he stepped up when it mattered most and
in his first game at Melbourne Arena against
the Breakers, he got the start and recorded
14 points (71% FG), 8 rebounds and 3
assists.
With early season bragging rights up for
grabs, you won’t want a miss a minute of
the action!
Both love to score, but they’re also willing
passers and can create flashy plays on the
regular.
Adelaide import Jacob Wiley has only
played three NBL games, but there is
already no doubt about his ability to make
an impact on the court. He is athletic,
otherworldly athletic to be fair, and loves
to compete. Dave Barlow, DJ Kennedy and
Craig Moller will play key roles in controlling
him and will need to make him work on both
ends of the court.
In Mitch McCarron’s debut weekend
for United, he showed exactly what he
is capable of and has already given the
Melbourne faithful plenty to cheer about.

THE EVERGREEN
DAVE BARLOW
Melbourne United forward Dave Barlow
has done just about everything in his
illustrious basketball career, but last Friday
night he experienced a first; playing in a
quadruple overtime thriller.
“To be honest, I’ve played for a long time and
I don’t think I’ve even played in a double
overtime game, so to go to four overtimes
was mental,” Barlow said.
“Obviously, we were very happy to be on the
winning end of that one, it would’ve really hurt
to lose and you definitely feel for Illawarra.
“We had opportunities to win it multiple times,
as did they in the last overtime especially, but
I think we were very close to closing it out on
a number of occasions in regulation and the
first couple of overtimes, but I was just really
happy that we did finally get it done.”
Getting it done is something that Barlow has
been doing for a long time and in the opening
stages of his 10th NBL season, the soon to be
35-year-old is showing no signs of slowing
down.
After some tough, injury-riddled seasons,
Barlow is just happy to be playing and getting
back to full health has been the key to his
strong preseason form, which has now
carried over the regular season.
Over the NBL off-season, Barlow played
SEABL for the Sandringham Sabres – an
opportunity that allowed him to continue

playing at a high-level and keep his body in
great health.
“I’m not really a big fan of taking breaks to be
honest,” he said.
“With having injuries over the last couple
of years, I’ve had some time off – and it’s
different for everyone – but for me, it’s always
difficult to come back from a prolonged
absence.
“I was happy to play SEABL in the off-season
and I think that probably has helped me a bit,
but even more so just really getting over all of
my injuries has helped me too.”
An 11-point, 10-rebound and 6-assist outing
to open the season, whilst playing 42
minutes, is proof that Barlow is healthy and
contributing greatly to a team in search of
back-to-back titles.
His three-point shooting is a weapon and his
ability to defend multiple positions and fight
for rebounds is invaluable to United.
A four-time NBL Champion, he knows all
about winning and he certainly isn’t tired of
that feeling. The unveiling of Melbourne’s NBL
Championship banner last Sunday was a
special moment for the veteran.
“That was kind of emotional for me,” he said.
“I was proud to see it happen and just
reminiscing about it and hearing it being
spoken about, I think the club did a good job
of remembering it and I really enjoyed that
moment.”
After unveiling the Championship banner in
round 1, round 2 sees Melbourne turn their
attention to a Grand Final re-match with
Adelaide. The five-game Grand Final series
was one of the most compelling in league
history and Barlow looks forward to creating a
new chapter in the heated rivalry.
“The teams have changed slightly, but a lot of
the same pieces remain and to go through
that experience, a five-game series, and for
it to be so close – that’s how rivalries are
created,” he said.
“To be back at it again already – it feels fairly
quick – I definitely think those same feelings
will remain.”
Barlow talked about the importance of homecourt
advantage in the Grand Final and the
buzz he gets every time he steps on the
court at Melbourne Arena.
“I look forward to every game at Melbourne
Arena,” he said.
“Playing in front of our fans is brilliant and
home-court was such a crucial factor [in the
Grand Final] and it kind of goes to show that
every game is critical for us moving forward.
“Winning the regular season was what gave
us home-court advantage and we have to
keep that in the back of our minds every time
we step on the court; every win is big time,
especially games at home.”
With one round in the books, Barlow is
confident the team is heading in the right
direction and he credits the new additions for
playing a huge role in that.
“I think for this early stage, as far as cohesion
goes, we’re definitely on the right track and
that’s a credit to the guys we’ve brought
in – they’re accommodative and they’ll fit in
where they can,” he said.

“If you look at guys like Mitch McCarron and
DJ Kennedy, they’re great basketball players
who can play multiple positions and want to
play the right way. You can’t ask for much
more than that and I think they’ve been
spectacular.
“Obviously, we’ve got a long way to go and it’s
still early in the season. I think we should’ve
won that game on Sunday, but we didn’t,
so we’re back to the drawing board this
week to work on the deficiencies that we’ve
displayed, and I look forward to getting better
as a team.”
Taking on the Adelaide 36ers is no easy task
and throughout the game, you can bet your
bottom dollar that Barlow will be matched
up on the athletic and energetic Jacob Wiley.
Wiley – who has NBA experience with the
Brooklyn Nets – has been impressive thus far
and Barlow is excited for the battle.
“He’s a superb athlete, great in transition, great
at attacking the basket, rebounding and very
versatile, so it’s a tough one and I’m looking
forward to it.” He said.
And he knows Adelaide as a whole will be just
as difficult to handle.
“They’re super dangerous and they’ve done a
great job of using momentum from success
last season and bringing it into this season.
We’ll have to deal with the standard Adelaide
or Joey [Wright] type stuff; ultra-fast paced
and aggressive offensively.” He said.
