LIFT OFF!!! TEN WAYS TO BLAST CREATIVITY RIGHT OFF THE SCALE You know when you go camping and one person has all the kit? Well Stephen Lockyer is one of those people but his kit is so cool. Like a metal thing you put twigs, fire and water into and hot tea comes out of! So we were glad to have him and his lovely family in our crew for Camp Bestival this year and who else to go to for creativity tips in the primary class room right here, right now? 1. FIND A NEW WORK PLACE You can build the fanciest office, but the creative ideas often come in the lunch queue, when you are reading, eating a sandwich. Schools: Look at all the places where learning a creativity don’t happen. Make it so! 2. ESCAPE FROM A4 You can be pretty sure that Leonardo Da Vinci didn’t seek out A4 paper for his ideas. Carry a notepad at all times, or at the very least, a wad of old receipts and a pen. Schools: Challenge yourself not to give the children anything on A4-sized paper. See how long you last. 3. ASK AN OBJECT Start looking around at objects in your world. Repurpose them. Where you are sitting now, imagine a small voice coming from a nearby object. Which object is it? What is it saying? How can you help it? Schools: Trawl some charity shops and boot fairs for items that capture your attention. Put them in the middle of desks and don’t say anything about them for the morning. 4. PLAN A LOT, OR NOT AT ALL JK Rowling plots her stories with phenomenal detail, Lee Child’s plan appears with every keystroke. Find the way that you plan best, and shake off those constraints. Schools: Whether you use a Story mountain, a Five Act plan or a Recipe card, children respond to plans in different ways. Find the way they plan best, and let them choose that. 5. GET RAW Finding a Really Audience for your Work is really easy - free those poems from your poem and put them on Instagram. Attach your art to Bus Top posts, record your plays and put them on SoundCloud for a real audience. Schools: Don’t let those exercise books become creativity graveyards. It takes very little time to compile a ‘Best of’ book, which can share and inspire others in your community. 6. SHARE LIKE A LEAKING HYDRANT Some of the best creative ideas are probably hidden away, terrified of being remixed and stolen. If however you give your ideas away (at a TEDx event, on Twitter, written on napkins), then your ideas have legs, an audience, and an opinion. Schools: Is your school an open door school, or a closed one? Are teachers welcome to visit anyone’s class at any time, including those SLT who teach? 7. BE A 10 PERCENT PAL Got a great idea, but are not a finisher? Simply start the ball rolling. Complete the first ten percent, then pass it onto a self-confessed finisher. Track the ball and build, together. Schools: Classes A and B write the first half of a story. They swap and finish each other’s tales off. By stories, I mean paintings, videos, projects, experiments…. 8. FIND YOUR MEH Who is that person you know who ‘never reads non-fiction’ or ‘hates’ modern art? Create something for them which they will fall in love with. Repeat. 9. BUILD YOUR LEGACY The most powerful thing a teacher ever told me was, “if you didn’t exist, would you be missed?” Create like it’s the one thing you want on your tombstone. Books don’t write themselves, albums don’t record themselves, and that killer lasagne recipe you’ve always thought about but never tried won’t cook itself. 10. WABI SABI This is a Japanese proverb. Nothing lasts, nothing is finished, nothing is perfect. Stop polishing that painting/ artwork/script. My friend has been working on a book for two years. I’m getting it printed for him. He doesn’t know this yet. Schools: Accept humility with creativity without losing a high expectation. #RESPECT It’s truly wonderful travelling around the UK meeting and working with school leaders, teachers and their communities but one particular highlight was walking into the assembly hall at Parklands Primary with the Gorillaz booming. When the whole school burst into a glorious rendition of ‘Sweet Caroline’ we knew we were in a very special place and weren’t terribly surprised when they won the coveted TES Community Collaboration award and then an Ofsted Outstanding rating. Head teacher, Chris Dyson is an example to all of how a school in the most challenging circumstances can deliver a fantastic, broad and balanced curriculum based on creativity, empathy and love. We popped back and ran a STEAM CO. Day for them and are looking forward to meeting him again when he opens our #ARTCONNECTS Festival Day of Talks with other educators from Yorkshire. 39
