4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 24 October, 2018 Granny Smith Festival plastic bottle ban pc ridiculous Dear Sir, I have been closely involved with the Granny Smith Festival since it was first held, and was absolutely disgusted at the ridiculous political correctness imposed by the Council last weekend. I am a diabetic, but was unable to buy bottled water, or my favourite top brand fruit juice. I do not drink rotgut coke or Fanta. May I point out that plastic bottles are NOT illegal and CAN be recycled. It is unbelievable to me that it was not possible to give the kids a balloon!! I hope that these petty and unnecessary regulations will be reversed for next year’s Festival. Alternatively, the council or its minions might consider an alternative that would solve all your problems: ban PEOPLE. COLIN HORNSHAW Hornsby Councillors actions deplored Dear Sir, As President of Byles Creek Valley Union Inc., I would like it publicly known that I have always advocated for the Cheltenham Church Hall funds to be used to conserve and protect land in Byles Creek Valley. I did not and do not support the majority of the Cheltenham Church Hall funds being used for resurfacing of Cheltenham Oval especially not with synthetic grass. I have categorically stated on numerous occasions, any such decision MUST be made with the agreement of all of the wider 2119 Community as these funds were to be used to compensate all 2119 residents. I made my opinion very clear that such a decision should not be made by our Councillors without putting this to everyone. Councillors could have chosen to ask our Community but did not. BCVU will not accept responsibility for a unanimous vote by Councillors for the balance to go towards the oval, especially as this is already Council’s financial responsibility. PATRICIA BROWN President Byles Creek Valley Union Inc Letters to the Editor Vale Dr Bruce Edelman OAM Dear Sir, I wish to acknowledge the passing of a great Hunters Hillian last week. Dr Edelman was an influential and leading oral surgeon in his professional career and an outstanding community leader. I first met Bruce when we both stood in the 1987 Hunters Hill Municipal Council election for Central Ward. We served on council for four years and during that time I admired the way Bruce supported our local community as an Alderman. My strongest memory is his passion for and determination to develop and grow a local SES presence in the late 1980s. His persistence and leadership of our local SES are legendry. Bruce initially convinced Council to provide a base in disused garages in Henley and an old council ute. From there he continued to lead and grow the unit to its present strength with strong membership and substantial facilities and equipment in the grounds of the old Gladesville Hospital site. Bruce will be missed and not forgotten for his contribution to our community. Put simply, liver cancer is already the fastest growing cause of cancer death in Australia. At least 1,400 Australians now die of liver cancer every year. It is expected that by the year 2030 the number of people with liver disease in Australia will be at least eight million. Alarmingly, a third of those diagnosed with liver cancer are sadly dead within just one month of their diagnosis. Right now – as people read this – six million Australians are affected by liver disease. Standing room only on trains Dear Sir, With schools and families from holiday back it was standing room only on the train from West Ryde. I hope this is not a sign for the next seven months! Particularly as we head into Summer. Can’t imagine how the system will cope when there are delays on the line, because it will happen under this Government. JAMES BROUGHTON Eastwood Nauru refugees claims dismissed Dear Sir, On Wednesday October 17, 2018 the High Court of Australia unanimously dismissed the separate appeals of two persons detained in Nauru. Firstly, a citizen of Bangladesh was an unauthorised maritime arrival in 2013 and subsequently transferred to Nauru. His application under the Refugees Act, in 2014, to be recognised as a refugee, claimed on the basis that he feared harm, because of his affiliation with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. His application was refused. In his appeal to The Refugee Status Review Tribunal, the tribunal found he had not suffered the harm that he claimed, or that his claim of fear of persecution was unconvincing. The Supreme Court of Nauru, dismissed his appeal, affirming the decision of The Tribunal. His further appeal, as of right, to the High Court of Australia was unanimously dismissed. Having spent five years in Nauru and four years climbing to the highest Court in our land, all financed by the taxpayer, he is now free to “…go back where he came from”. Secondly and similarly, an Iranian citizen was an unauthorised maritime arrival in 2013 and he was transferred to Nauru. He claimed refugee status because he had a well- founded fear of being persecuted by reason of his association with his father, who he alleged was physically abusive, an alcoholic and a drug addict, who compelled him to engage in drug trafficking. His application was refused. In his appeal to The Refugee Status Review Tribunal, the tribunal did not accept his evidence, that his father would force him to distribute drugs full- time for about four years. And his assertion that the father would deliberately implicate himself and his son in illegal drug dealing was not accepted. The Supreme Court of Nauru dismissed his appeal. Should he also, “…go back where he came from?’ JAMES A KEARNEY Hunters Hill Royal Rehab an eye opener Dear Sir, A reality check, or at least for me is the existence of the Royal Rehab Facility at Putney/Ryde. I was unaware of its existence and the services provided. This can be quickly improved by finding a need for one of those services. A walk down the spine (poor pun) of the building reveals some signage that stays with me. Brain injury (pointing left) and Spinal injury (pointing right). The work put in by these brave people, on the road to some form of recovery is inspiring - teenagers and under 25’s are well represented! Straight ahead is the relatively trivial injuries such as knee, hip and ankles. Post op recovery and rate of progress can be measured by an increasing dose of addictive pain killers and “get over it” plus a lot of physiotherapy. This is not intended to belittle total knee replacement surgery, but brain and spinal injury recovery and repair, (if possible), in much smaller increments. Okay, if you must know, a knee replacement procedure starts after three components have been disconnected - two major bones in the leg and a hinge prothesis simulating the knee - in my case, a newly installed robotic saw cut a very precise gap to house the prothesis. The surgery was done at the San Hospital. So there you go, all this wonderful stuff going on, week in week out by highly trained and dedicated medical staff. Maybe we all take mobility too much for granted. I certainly have a better awareness of the dangers of the much publicised crusher tackle in rugby league. JOHN FRYER Ryde Federal Integrity commission overdue? Dear Sir, Despite a long and somewhat desperate campaign by TWT and its editor against the NSW ICAC, it continues to land some big fish. No less a figure than former Ryde mayor Ivan Petch has been found guilt of blackmail by a district court jury. TWT’s proprietor John Booth claims that ICAC has had powers similar to those of the Spanish Inquisition and the Stasi without recognising that this anticorruption body plays a vital role in ensuring those who come to their attention may ultimately find themselves before the courts. It is true that not all those referred by the DPP for prosecution are found guilty, however there is enough evidence to suggest the process works and that a Federal ICAC is long overdue. If we cannot trust our politicians, or those with power and influence in our community, then our democracy becomes unworkable. One need look no further than the farce that is American politics to see we are only a few steps shy of that precipice. We all expect and deserve the highest of standards from our community leaders. Mr Grant and Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts this week urged local residents to join the ‘Feed a Farmer’ campaign and to support one of several initiatives being promoted on the website www.nsw. gov.au/feed-a-farmerthis-festive-season. “I appeal for help on behalf our our emergency services and especially call for support from the Hunters Hill community and from everyone across the Lane Cove electorate to support this statewide charity drive,” Mr Grant said. Unique works on display at 2018 Arcadian Artists Trail HANDMADE and original items will be the order of the day at this year’s Arcadian Artist Trail to be held on Saturday November 10 and Sunday November 11 between 9am and 5pm.
