Wednesday 24 October, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 9 Students form giant numerals to celebrate historic milestone STUDENTS and teachers from Villa Maria Catholic School in Hunters Hill formed the giant numerals ‘150’ to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hunters Hill’s Catholic primary school education - in an exclusive photo for The Weekly Times. The school is celebrating with the enthusiastic support of Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts who will plant trees at the school as part of the celebration. “This celebration especially acknowledges the contribution both the Marists and the Sisters of St Joseph have made to all our local Catholic schools such as Villa Maria and Marist Sisters College in Woolwich,” he said. “It also pays tribute to the contribution made to our community by the clergy and parishioners of the Holy Name Of Mary Catholic Church in Hunters Hill and St Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Woolwich. “The 150 milestone is a significant achievement and also pays tribute to the parents, students and friends of Villa Maria and other schools, who have given so much without reward.” School Principal Kevin Turner said Villa Maria is the tenth oldest Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Sydney. “The first reference to the parish school is in May 1868, when two local women, Jenny Makinson and Emily Heydon, began a school with 25 students,” Mr Turner said. “The school was most likely located at The Priory, owned by the Marist Fathers at Tarban Creek. “Over the following twenty years there were a number of locations for the school, both in the Church grounds and on Gladesville Road. “A number of teachers followed Miss Makinson and Heydon, until the Sisters of St Joseph (the “Josephites”) and the Marist Brothers took charge ofschooling for girls and boys respectively in the early 1880’s.” In 1888 a timber building for the schools had been constructed by the parish on the corner of Gladesville Road and Mary Street, with separate classrooms for boys and girls. The Josephites’ establishment was a convent school that had five Sisters, eight boarders and an assistant teacher - all living on the premises - teaching 65 students. “The Marist Brothers’ school had a roll of 48 students,” Mr Turner said. The next year a timber parish school called The Blessed Peter Chanel School was built at Futuna Street, Woolwich, alongside St Peter Chanel Church. It was later to be given to the Marist Sisters. In 1908 new schools for boys and girls were officially opened by Cardinal Moran. The girls’ school at 45 Gladesville Road was named St Joseph’s Girls School and was run by the Josephites. The boys’ school was called the ‘Marist Brothers School’ and was located in Mark Street where Villa Maria Primary School stands today. In 1936 The Blessed Peter Chanel School was What a celebration! In 1966 St Joseph’s Girls School and Marist Brothers Mark Street amalgamated at the Mark Street site. Girls would be educated to 6th Class and boys to 4th Class, with older boys being directed to Patrician Brothers College, ‘Holy Cross’, Ryde. “The other major change was that the Marist Sisters would take over the primary school and the amalgamated school was known as St Joseph’s School,” Mr Turner said. By 1967 the school changed names to become ‘Villa Maria’. Mr Turner was appointed principal in 2011 when a new school block was officially opened. Last year a new creative arts and amenities block was opened and named the ‘Father Kevin Bates Creative Arts Room’, in 150 trees for 150 years Congratulations to Villa Maria for 150 years in Catholic education recognition of Villa Maria’s Parish priest. “ Celebrating 150 years, Villa Maria Catholic Primary School remains a two stream, co-educational primary school from Kindergarten to Year Six,” Mr Turner said.
