Welcome to fall! In this booklet you
will find information about DC’s leaf
collection services, including a map
and schedule for when leaves will be
collected in your ward.
DC Department of Public Works
will pick up leaves twice in your
neighborhood from November 5
through January 19. Please rake your
leaves and place them in your tree box
(or at the curb if there is no tree box)
the Sunday before your scheduled
collection week.
For the latest schedule updates,
please visit dpw.dc.gov. Follow us on
social media to meet our new seasonal
expert, Jake (left) to learn seasonal
tips and share your favorite leaf pile
photos. We look forward to working
with you this season.
Facts
Every street will have at least two scheduled
collection weeks. Our crews will only come
once during each scheduled week.
Sign up for a reminder about when leaves
will be collected on your street by visiting
dpw.dc.gov.
We will collect on Veterans Day (observed
November 12).
We will not collect on Thanksgiving Day
(November 22), Christmas Day (December
25) or New Year’s Day (January 1).
Heavy rain, snow and ice storms will delay
the collection schedule. Visit dpw.dc.gov for
timely notices about schedule changes.

Expect Weather Delays
As winter approaches, the DC Snow Team will likely be
called upon to clear our city’s streets. When this happens,
our leaf collection trucks must stop collecting leaves to be
outfitted with snow plows and salt spreaders. Once the
weather improves, the trucks are cleaned and outfitted to
resume leaf operations. This process can take several days.
Further delays can also be expected when leaves are wet or
frozen, as such conditions hamper our equipment’s ability to
function properly.
When Mother Nature interferes, we encourage you to
visit our website for updates on when our leaf collection
operations will resume. We appreciate residents’ patience
and understanding throughout the season.

Questions
If you miss your collection date, bag up your leaves in paper bags and
bring them to the Fort Totten or Benning Road Transfer Stations.
What’s considered a tree box?
Tree boxes are the public spaces (usually box shaped) in front of private
property that house trees and other plants. Residents are responsible
for keeping the tree boxes in front of their homes in clean and safe
condition.
What happens to my leaves after they’re collected?
Each year DPW collects and composts between five and seven thousand
tons of leaves from residents’ tree boxes or curbs. Free compost is
available to DC residents all year round at the Fort Totten Transfer
Station. Unfortunately, bagged leaves placed where your trash and
recycling are collected are not able to be composted.
Why can’t leaves be raked into storm drains?
Too many leaves can clog catch basins (storm drains), disrupting drainage,
and can pollute the Chesapeake Bay and other local waterbodies.
Proper leaf collection and disposal is an important practice that helps
make our rivers and streams healthy!

Leaf Collection Program 2018-2019
Holiday Trees
& Greenery Pick Up
Holiday trees and greenery will be collected by the
Department of Public Works (DPW) from January 14 to
February 2. Trees should be set out for collection at the
place where your trash and recyclables are normally picked
up. Holiday trees and greenery may also be brought to the
Fort Totten or Benning Road Transfer Stations at any point.
Please remove all ornaments and lights and do not put the
tree(s) and greenery in a bag. Trees and greenery collected
during these three weeks will be composted and be made
available to residents, free of charge, all year round.
After February 2, place holiday trees and greenery where
your trash is collected. They will be picked up with your
trash as space in our trucks permit. Unfortunately, trees and
greenery collected after February 2 will not be composted.
