Spirit to the Rescue
Are you great in fulfilling New Year’s Resolutions?
I suck at it.
I remember when I was in my 20s, I wrote on January
1, “I’ll jog 45 minutes a day.” I even bought new rubber shoes,
new socks, new shorts, new shirt. To show how serious I am, I
even wanted to buy an Olivia Newton-John Let’s Get Physical
headband. (I’m old, okay?)
So I jogged on January 2. Hooray!
The next time I jogged was also on January 2. The
following year.
What’s your NYR? Whether it’s “I shall not shout at my
kids anymore” or “I shall lessen my telenovela watching to one
hour a day,” we feel like we’re climbing Mt. Everest. It’s so difficult.
But thankfully, God knows we’re weak.
That’s why He sent us His Holy Spirit.
That’s what we’re going to talk about today.
Have an awesome Feast!
May your dreams come true,
BO SANCHEZ
HOW THE SPIRIT WORKS
One evening, my wife and I were going home after visiting my
in-laws. They live in a very big village in Quezon City with lots of
uphill and downhill streets. As we ascended in one of their long
uphill streets, we overtook an ice cream vendor who was also
on his way out. His ice cream cart was attached to a bike, but
because of the steep climb, he wasn’t pedaling the bike, he was
pushing the whole cart instead.
We were already five blocks away when Kristel and I
looked at each other. With the same thought in our heads, we
said, “We should go back and help him out.”
So I turned the car around and we went back. When
we got to him, he hadn’t budged at all. He was still catching
his breath. I asked if I could help, and together we pushed his
cart until we got to the top. He smiled and thanked us. We went
home with a full heart, without any regrets that night.
This is just one of the many ways the Holy Spirit works in us.
He speaks to our inner hearts and moves us to act in love and
kindness towards others.
Our goal today is to learn how the Spirit works so that we
can be more sensitive to it.
You will be blessed.
In Him,
TALK 3: EMPOWERED
“In your relationships with one
another, have the same mindset as
Christ Jesus: Who, being in very
nature God, did not consider equality
with God something to be used to
his own advantage; rather, he made
himself nothing by taking the very
nature of a servant, being made in
human likeness.”
– Philippians 2:5-7 NIV
“But when the Holy Spirit comes upon
you, you will be filled with power,
and you will be witnesses for me in
Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the eah.”
– Acts 1:8 GNT
Your Kerygma Conference Guide
Hello! Have you heard of KCon?
No, not KPop. KCon, you
know the Kerygma Conference.
It’s the annual event of the Light
of Jesus Family. Always been
amazing. Every year!
Oh, so, you have heard of
KCon. What do you think of it?
Me, I think it’s pretty
fantastic!
Those my age would
probably say, “But, Francis, it’s for
adults and I won’t have time to be
with my friends.”
I say, “Have no fear
Brighter is here!”
Brighter is the youth
conference of KCon. Or you can
say, YCon of KCon. (OK, noboday
calls it that. I just made it up.)
Francis Sanchez
Francis Sanchez, 13, is the son of Bro. Bo and Sis
Marowe Sanchez. This homeschooler is in Grade 7
at the Catholic Filipino Academy (CFA).
It’s great because you can bring your friends – yes, I’m talking to young
people – and get to meet new ones! (Note: Brighter isn’t for kids younger than
12. A lot of parents have made the mistake of bringing seven-year-olds there. Ah,
wait for a few more years.)
I’ve always been looking forward to KCon each year. It’s almost
like early Christmas to me (since it happens on November. Hehe). It’s a great
opportunity for me to learn about God, family and so much more (depending on
the classes and talks).
I remember going to KCon feeling so grateful. If you’re feeling sad or
feel like there is nothing to be thankful for, I really encourage you to go. It will help
you realize your blessings, and your faults, too and what you should do about
them.
Anyway, here are my tips to have the best KCon experience ever:
Bring your refillable water bottles. (There tend to be long lines at the
food stalls and you also save the environment when you stop using
single-use plastics.)
Bring a light jacket. (I don’t get why Philippine malls, restaurants and
buildings are the North Pole. Haha!)
Bring your friends. The more the merrier!
Bring a notebook. There are a lot of insights to learn. Make sure you
write them down. Or use your phone for note-taking.
Different but…
Everything seemed different. We weren’t used to seeing a band in a
religious gathering, how the attendees worshipped, the talks. But, it felt right.
The session was one big warm welcoming hug. So, my family and I
became regular attendees since.
Mommy’s Dream
As part of the Feast family, we received the prayer cum dream booklet –
Novena to God’s Love.
One of the things mom wrote was for her to open her own beauty salon
someday. This year, God granted her prayer. Her new salon is in Pampanga where
she’s able to practice her passion and craft.
Service and KCon
Aside from attending this Sunday event regularly, we immersed ourselves
in ministries. We developed this craving to know and understand God more and His
love for us through service and FBA seminars. We also participated in the annual
Kerygma Conference or KCon.
Through KCon, we grew more extensively as individuals through the
classes while we bonded and worshipped together as family.
My Unforgettable KCon
At KCon 2017’s Grand Feast, I entered MOA Arena feeling disappointed
with myself. Despite attending the three-day event, I still felt I was undeserving
of God’s love. I only saw my weaknesses, convinced that I wasn’t worthy of His
forgiveness.
Then the Eucharistic celebration started. During the homily, the priest
shared his story of falling into sin and how he came to forgive himself when he
realized that Lord had already forgiven him.
His bravery and vulnerability moved me. I realized that my depiction of
God’s love was distorted. He used the priest’s confession to remind me that His love
and forgiveness is an ocean that will never run out.
When the Grand Feast ended and my family and I were about to leave, I
felt a burning sensation in my chest and I felt the words: “I love you.”
I started to tear. It was the very first time I ever had an encounter like that
making me realize that truly how KCon is a powerful and life-changing experience.
That’s the reason why my family and I strive to attend yearly.
Families have their unique set of traditions and for us, it’s this.
So, see you at KCon!
And one last thing: stay hydrated, folks!
This Is Our Thing
Jaye Jaymalin
Dream boards. That’s what Bro. Bo’s talk was all about when my mom and I saw
a live stream of the Feast aired on channel 5.
“Someday, I want us to attend The Feast,” she said.
Our Special Case
Diagnosed with autism, we weren’t sure if my brother would be able
to sit still and behave for two hours straight. He was only used to an hour's
celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Despite that, my parents decided to give it a try
after an aunt told us their family’s wonderful experience.
“Great things can come out of
your problems.”
–Bro. Bo Sanchez
▲ Before the talk proper at Youth High, Feasters share to their seatmates at least five things they’re grateful
for for the week.
Prayer Time. Jesus, I trust You. Whatever
I’m going through right now, You are in
charge. You love me and so, I can rest
in Your love and trust that all things
will work for good. I can trust that great
things will come out of my problems.
So here I am, even in the midst of my
problems, I hear your call. And I will
serve you for the rest of my life. In Jesus’
name. Amen.
RECAP
The Gospel According to:
Mark 10:35-45 The Request of James and John
“Love is the greatest cry of the human heart.” –Fr. Rey Tano
Series: I Believe
Talk 3: Empowered
Big Message: Be the Church
Don’t delay your yes. God calls us to change the world by being
His Church. Often times, we disregard His request because it’s
inconvenient and uncomfortable for us. We’re unwilling to be disturbed
and so, He is unable to direct us.
The Lord commands us to be missionaries of faith, hope and love. Use words to build hope,
use kindness to show love to others and be a witness to build the faith of others.
“If you believe that what you are doing is for Jesus, do it regardless of
the criticism.” –Fr. Michael Vasquez
The road to eternal life is paved by the things we say and do, and how these things affect the
people around us. In dealing with others, show your goodness. Be true and genuine, speak
to build them up, regardless of what other people may say.
Be disturbed, be inconvenienced. People who serve the Lord
know all about inconveniences. They are those who allowed God’s
disturbance to direct them to fulfill His plans. For the true essence of
calling pushes us out of our comfort zones.
Be the Light. Take the invitation of being the church starting with the
people closest to you. Start your own Feast Light and bring the church
closer to the unchurched. If people can’t or don’t want to join you at
The Feast, bring The Feast to them.
Start a fire for Jesus. Be open to His mission for you. We don’t
change the world by what we do inside the church but by bringing
the church outside, to the people around us. There’s nothing more
powerful than someone who has God’s Hand in whatever he does.
