He expressed these views
after inspecting the road carpeting
in the city want to make
this event successful.
Decline in book reading
habit is a wrong impression
KARACHI: Decline in
books reading habit is
totally wrong impression
being given presently, similarly
the sale of popular
newspapers and periodicals
in most of the countries
is also continued. If
we accept decline in books
reading habit, then why
big publishing houses are
running into profit is a big
question. Although Radio
and Television are broadcasting
and telecasting
news throughout day and
night, but the sale of popular
newspapers & periodicals
is continued as usual
in most of the countries.
This was stated by veteran
Journalist and Editor
inaugurating a three days
but also for community
and humanity. We cannot
deny their notable services
in the field of medical. They
treat their patients and take
care of them with sincerity
and wholeheartedly. They
have right to proud themselves
because they play the
role of mother”, said
Shabbir Jhatial, Acting
Director Nursing Sindh, as
a Chief Guest on Patient
printed books are also
available on internet in the
shape of e-library due to
which a large number of
students and teachers are
taking advantage of this
facility. He said as a
Muslim we believed in our
holy book Quran that is
why reading of books
should be routine of our
life. He said this world is
very rich with treasure of
knowledge that is why we
need translation of a large
number of important books
in Urdu in the larger interest
of our students. He also
expressed his satisfaction
to know that book fair at
MAJU are being held
every year to provide valuable
books to their students
on discounted price.
He expressed his concern
that a large number of
good books are written in
our country every year, but
it is very regretted to say
that the publishers of the
books are getting more
profit in comparison to the
authors. Speaking on this
occasion, President MAJU
Prof. Dr. Zubair Shaikh
asked the students that
besides reading their syllabus
book they must also
read books on Sociology,
History, philosophy, psychology,
HYDERABAD: Senate
convener Senator Nauman
It would be a public private
would determine power
tariff.
“This is a new model
for recovering loss-making
Big advantage would be
that local coal would be
used in production of electricity
which would save
national exchequer worth
$600 million per year and
generate employment
around 16,000 workers in
Lakhra mines and power
plant. This would be one of
the cheapest electricity
productions in Pakistan,”
he said.
He said this while
speaking to media persons
seeking shifting of
child to Karachi
ISLAMABAD: The
Supreme Court of Pakistan
(SC) has rejected petition of
a father pertaining to his
child’s custody and
remarked that mother can’t
Upon which the counsel to
the child’s father informed
the court that the minor’s
father was currently residing
in Kuwait. Since flights
from Kuwait to Karachi
were more frequent as compared
to Islamabad, the
child could meet his father
easily.
the mother of child can’t be
deprived of her child.
keep the child for
one year under mother’s
custody the court permitted
that in case of permanent
return of the petitioner to
Pakistan, he can go to the
court for the child’s custody
after one year.
ISLAMABAD –– LAHORE –– RAWALPINDI –– KARACHI
OPINION
Islam always cares for human's body and soul
---- Eating pork forbidden--- Swine virus
Rasheed Ahmed Chughtai
The Holy Qur’an says:
“He has only forbidden to
you dead animals, blood, the
flesh of swine, and that which
has been dedicated to other than
Allah. But whoever is forced [by
necessity], neither desiring [it] nor
transgressing [its limit], there is no sin
upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
Al-Baqara (The Cow) : 173
Interestingly, the Bible says:
And the swine, because it divideth
the hoof, yet cheweth the cud – it is
unclean to you; Ye shall not eat of
their flesh or not touch the dead
carcass.
(Leviticus 11:7)
Islamic philosophy proposes that eating food has
two effects. The first affect is
on the body, and the second affect is on the soul.
Therefore, if you eat a foul
animal there will be foul affects on the body and
the soul. Affects on the body from eating pork
include the passage of viruses such as’ swine
influenza virus’, which may cause a ‘flu-like’ illness,
the passage of parasites, such as the adult tapeworm,
which can lodge in the gastrointestinal tract of the
human and cause malnutrition and blood loss. Pork
alohas an extremely high proportion of fat content –
we know that the high intake of fat predisposes to
high blood pressure and the gradual blocking of
arteries with fatty material leading to heart
attacks and strokes.
Effects of pork on the soul, according to Islamic
philosophy, would affect moral
qualities such as chastity, modesty, humility, honesty
and integrity. Many people believe ‘what you
eat is what you are’ and justify themselves by highlighting
the different personality traits exhibited by
meat eaters and vegetarians. Meat eaters are often
described as being aggressive and competitive,
while vegetarians are gentler and weaker. Many psychiatric
symptoms such as apathy, depression, irritability
and moodiness have been linked with dietary
vitamin deficiencies and excesses. Essentially, what
we are ginning to understand is what Islam has
taught us from the outset what wheat has a greater
affect on us than merely providing mechanical building
blocks for the growth of our physical body – our
spiritual body/soul and personality are affected.
WHO(World Health Organization) has sent warning
signals of the virulent diseases
Swine virus named A(H1N1) by the World
Health Organization is spreading like a wildfire,
around the world, especially in places where pork
features among the top popular dishes.
It has claimed numerous lives already. And, if the
situation is not contained, lives of about half the
population of the world would be threatened. WHO
has sent warning signals of the virulent diseases,
which first appeared in Mexico earlier last month. It
was on April 24th, when WHO alerted the world to
the dangers of Swine Flu; weeks after the disease
had spread. Scientists fear that the deadly pandemic
could prove to be extremely costly to human lives.
Governments have been asked by the International
Health body to report of an ‘unusual and or unexpected’
outbreak of flu so that it could help along
with other relevant organizations to prevent it
spreading. Nobody knows when A (H1N1) began
infecting humans in Mexico. But according to a
reports by a US biosurveillance firm, Veratec, show
that on April 6th officials in Veracruz state in
Mexico had declared a ‘health alert’ after recording
400 cases of illness among the 3000 people of the
village of La Gloria, where the first official case of
the virus was later recorded. Veratec posted another
warning on 16th April indicating that the disease
had spread to the state of Oaxaca . Similar H1N1
strain has been found in US pigs since 1998 , and
has been rapidly evolving ever since, leading a senior
US Department of Agriculture scientist to warn
last year that it posed the ‘potential for pandemic
influenza mergence in North America”. Scientist are
now trying to work out why almost all the deaths
have occurred in Mexico, although the virus has
spread to over 16 countries. The likeliest reason is
that A H1N1 is indeed mild virus, killing a very low
proportion of those it infects, but that hundreds of
thousands have caught it in Mexico compared with
only 650 elsewhere. The rate doubles every few
days. But because it’s a new virus, no one is certain.
Experts warn, however, that it is too early to relax.
The 1918 pandemic, which killed 50 million people,
began as a mild virus , but returned as a fatal one
four months later. The high risk areas of the flu
include Mexico , Texas, San Diego and New York.
Christopher Columbus introduced pigs in America
In Britain, the term pig refers to all domestic swine;
in the United States, to younger swine not yet ready
for market and weighing usually less than 82 kg
(180 pounds), others being called hogs. Pigs are
stout-bodied, short-legged, omnivorous mammals,
with thick skins usually sparsely coated with short
bristles. Their hooves have two functional and two
(I)
nonfunctional digits. Domestic North American
pigs originated from wild stocks still found in
European, Asian, and North African forests. Wild
pigs are not truly native to North America but are
believed to have been introduced on Christopher
Columbus’ second voyage in 1493 and brought to
the mainland in the early 1500s. There is little difference
between wild pigs, or boars, and domestic
swine, though the tusklike teeth of domestic pigs are
not as developed as the tusks of their wild kin, who
use the sharp ends to forage for roots and as a defensive
weapon. Wild pigs may live up to 25 years or
more. Domestic pigs are categorized according to
three basic types: large-framed lard types with a
comparatively thick layer of fat and carcasses usually
weighing at least 100 kg (220 pounds); smaller
bacon types, with carcasses of about 70 kg (150
pounds); and pork types with carcasses averaging
around 45 kg (100 pounds). 940 million pigs worldwide
In the late 20th century, China had the largest
hog population of any country in the world, but scientific
breeding was concentrated in Europe and the
United States. Denmark produced the Landrace
breed. The Yorkshire (Large White), the world’s
most popular breed, originated in Britain in the 18th
century. Worldwide population is estimated to be
more than 940 million. Approximately half are
raised in Asia, primarily in China. Europe, North
America, and South America also have large numbers.
Unlike most domestic animals, pigs are
omnivorous and compete directly with humans for
many foods. In the United States their production is
concentrated in the Midwest, where pig husbandry
is based on the conversion of corn and soybean
meal into meat under intensive conditions. Pigs are
relatively easy to raise indoors or outdoors, and they
can be slaughtered with a minimum of equipment
because of their moderate size. Pigs are monogastric,
so, unlike ruminants, they are unable to utilize
large quantities of forage and must be given concentrate
feed. Furthermore, pigs have only one primary
economic use—as a source of meat (pork) and
lard—unlike most other livestock, such as cattle and
sheep, which have many other important economic
uses. Bacon, staple meat of the western European
peasantry. Bacon, meat from pig that has been
cured, was for centuries the staple meat of the western
European peasantry. Varieties distinguished by
cut of meat or curing process became standardized
in association with particular countries or regions,
such as the Irish or various Italian styles. The relatively
long storage life of bacon made it the only
meat to gain importance as an international trade
commodity in the late 19th century. Pork has an
extremely high fat content and is therefore not an
especially nutritious meat. There are more than 300
known breeds or local varieties of pigs throughout
the world. Pork is virtually unknown in the cuisines
of the Middle East and those of some local populations
in Asia and Africa. The chief pork-consuming
countries are Germany, Denmark, Poland, and
Austria. In China and Southeast Asia pork is commonly
shredded or cubed and stir-fried with vegetables
and spices. Pork-and-vegetable mixtures are
also used to stuff a variety of small rolls, buns, and
dumplings. In Spain, the most widely eaten meats
are pork, chicken, and beef, but in much of the
country lamb is eaten on special occasions. Very
fond of both fish and shellfish, Spaniards are among
the world’s largest consumers of seafood. Legumes,
especially lentils and chickpeas, also form an
important part of the Spanish diet. In Mexico, popular
dishes vary by region and individual circumstances,
but some of the more widely enjoyed foods
include tortillas (flat bread wraps made from wheat
or maize flour), enchiladas, cornmeal tamales
(cooked within corn husks or banana leaves), burritos,
soft-shell tacos, tortas (sandwiches of chicken,
pork, or cheese and vegetables enclosed in a hard
roll), stuffed chili peppers, and quesadillas (tortillas
filled with soft cheese and meat). Other favourites
are soups and spicy stews such as menudo (made
from beef tripe and fresh vegetables) and pozole
(stewed hominy and pork). In Denmark, domesticated
animals are an important feature of life in
Denmark. Dairy cattle, pigs, and poultry are raised
in great numbers to supply both the domestic and
the foreign markets. Farms are generally small or
medium-size family-owned enterprises. The extensive
fertilization and application of scientific animal
husbandry helps to maintain the viability of small
farm operations. Milk and dairy products, pork, and
eggs account for a major percentage of the total
value of production. Current crisis In La Goria,
Mexico, about 7,200 pigs are quarantined in highvoltage
electric and razor wire fences and protected
by security lights and locked gates, in a place one
could mistake for a prison. La Glroia, a viallage
with only 3000 people, has more than 16 farms
owned by both Mexican – Granjas Carroll de
Mexico in partnership with US-based Smithfield
Foods, which are the largest pork producer in the
world. Activists in La Gloria claim that the pig firms
are a fetid crucible for the new virus. The company’s
farming practices include burying dead pigs to
rot in ‘biodigester’ containers. And pig urines and
faeces are flashed into huge open air pits, adjoining
miles of cropland.
forge closer ties as both
countries stood together at
an “historic turning point”,
$30 billion currency swap
pact, amid rising trade tensions
with Washington.
Japanese Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe and
Chinese Premier Li
two countries would work
together to achieve denuclearization
on the Korean
The pacts were reached
on Abe’s three-day visit to
Beijing as the two neighbors
looked to carve out
new areas of cooperation
and seek ways to promote
trust, which has been fragile
at times since diplomatic
relations resumed in
1972.
Chinese Premier Li
Central government ends emergency response period for
central Sulawesi province, stricken by earthquake, tsunami
JAKARTA: Indonesian
government on Friday lifted
the state of emergency for
the central Sulawesi
province, imposed in the
wake of the earthquake and
tsunami in the island.
On Sept. 29, the government
declared state of emergency
for the island after a
7.4-magnitude earthquake
struck Sulawesi Island,
which triggered a tsunami in
the cities of Donggala and
Palu that towered up to 10
feet (3 meters) high.
Coordinating Minister
for Political, Legal and
Security Affairs Wiranto,
who goes by only one name,
said that after the emergency
response period
ended, the affected areas
would enter the transition
phase into the rehabilitation
and reconstruction.
"All of these phases will
be the responsibility of the
regional government,"
Wiranto said in his office on
Thursday.
Previously, the government
announced that the
state of emergency would
end on Oct. 11, but extended
it for two weeks, citing the
ongoing emergency
response activities, he
North and South Korea agree to scrap
22 guard posts at border next month
SEOUL: North and
South Korea agreed on
Friday to “completely
destroy” by next month 22
guard posts near their heavily
fortified border, the latest
advance in talks in the
neighbors’ effort to defuse
military tension, Seoul’s
defense ministry said.
It follows a military pact
at a summit last month in the
North Korean capital that
called for a halt to “all hostile
acts,” a no-fly zone near
the border and the gradual
removal of guard posts,
firearms and landmines
from the Demilitarized Zone
(DMZ) separating the two.
As an initial step, the
neighbors agreed to demolish
11 guard posts within 1
km (0.6 mile) of each side of
the border and withdraw
equipment and personnel
stationed there by the end of
November, the ministry
said.
“The measures will be
finished through mutual verification
in December,” it
said in a statement.
The talks were led by
South Korean Army Major
General Kim Do-gyun and
North Korean Lieutenant
General An Ik San at the
border village of
Panmunjom within the
DMZ.
MOSCOW: Mikhail
Gorbachev, the last Soviet
leader, denounced on Friday
a U.S. decision to leave an
arms control treaty that
helped end the Cold War,
saying it heralded a new
arms race which increased
the risk of nuclear conflict.
President Donald Trump
has said Washington plans
to quit the Intermediate-
Range Nuclear Forces
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for
Planning, Development and Reform
Makhdum Khusro Bakhtiar on Friday said
that the incumbent government is committed
to give due share of Net Hydel Profit
(NHP) to provinces.
While chairing a meeting on Net Hydel
minister said that the government would
ensure implementation of Council of
resolve all outstanding issues regarding
determination of NHP.
The meeting deliberated upon the way
forward for determining the share of NHP
which is required to be paid to the province
the twenty-three most powerful
countriesin the world,
according to US News and
World Report which
released the latest edition of
its annual “Best Countries”
study.
The US retained its position
as the world’s most
powerful nation, despite
declining respect for its
leadership. Its economic,
political influence shapes
the world, and a mammoth
defence budget of about
$600 billion and leading
economy put it at the top.
The US was perceived
as the most powerful, followed
closely by Russia
and China with the UK
coming in fourth. The rise
of China is quite remarkable
as the country already
has the world’s largest military,
and experts predict it
will be the world’s largest
economy by 2050.
The media organisation
PM Khan lauded for securing Saudi package
ISLAMABAD: The
Federation of Pakistan
Chambers of Commerce
and Industry (FPCCI) on
Friday hailed Prime
Minister Imran Khan for
securing Saudi package
terming it a great success
which will help settle many
financial difficulties.
The businesses heave a
sigh of relief, the stock market
has positively responded
to the development while
the US dollar has also lost
its value substantially due to
the deal with no strings
attached, it said.
The efforts of Prime
Minister Imran Khan are
creditable as it will bring the
two countries closer at a
time when rest of the world
is keeping a distance from
the Kingdom, said
Ghazanfar Bilour, President
of the FPCCI.
He said that SaudiArabia
will deposit three billion
dollars in the State Bank of
Pakistan and provide oil
worth three billion dollars
on deferred payments providing
a great relief to
Pakistan facing balance of
payment trouble.
The Saudi package will
reduce our dependence on
IMF as we will not need $18
billion but $12 billion from
the lender, he added.
PTI”s financial rescue
strategy working well and
the sweet Saudi rescue may
help the country to avoid
some of the IMF’s harsh
conditions, he noted.
The president of the
Apex chamber said that one
of the reasons for Pakistan’s
problems was rampant corruption
but according to the
latest report of World
Economic Forum Pakistan
has jumped from 140th
number to 107th on the
index which is good.
international conference.
Both the leaders expressed
The organisation states
that the world’s most powerful
countries are those
that consistently dominate
news headlines, preoccupy
policymakers and shape
economic forecasts.
The foreign and economic
policy decisions of
the countries can have ripple
effects all over the
world. Also, their military
budgets are tracked religiously,
and the international
community expects them
to honour their pledges.
will be the hub of trade in
only leave positive impact
The match started
tensely, with Kerber
and the missed opportunities
proved costly.
An energetic Stephens
Muscat, Oman.
Both Pakistan and
Malaysia had already qualified
for the semifinals, and
also virtually assured to
face each other again in the
last four stage.
Still, there was more
than the bragging rights
attached to this tie.
What added spice to this
match was the fact that
Malaysia's head coach,
Dutchman Roelant
Oltmans, was in charge of
Pakistan team till one
month back.
Under Oltmans tutelage,
Pakistan had defeated
Malaysia 4-1 when the two
sides last met, in the Asian
Games two months back.
Nothing much to
describe the first 30 minutes.
There were some soft
circle entries at either end.
The only shot at the goal
came via an Imran Butt
blunder. Pakistani net minder's
ridiculous clearance
went to an opponent at the
top of the circle. The
Malaysian forward, who
had all the time in the
world, made a hash of it,
shooting straight at Imran
Butt. Neither side had a
penalty corner. Things
livened up in the second
half. The tempo was faster
and both the teams had
some good chances but fine
show by the two custodians
and poor shooting meant it
was still goal less after
three quarters.
The actress was supposed
Death toll in Jordan flood rises to 20, mostly children
DEAD SEA: Jordanian rescuers search for survivors of flash floods at the Dead Sea
area. The body of a 12-year-old girl, was recovered early Friday, a day after middle
school students and teachers visiting hot springs in the area were swept away by the
torrent. Civil defense officials say the surge, caused by heavy rains, carried some for
several kilometers (miles) toward the Dead Sea.
higher ground, sweeping
them away, some as far as
the Dead Sea, officials said.
A complex rescue operation
involving helicopters,
divers, sniffer dogs and hundreds
of searchers continued
into the night Thursday and
resumed Friday. Israel’s military
said it also dispatched a
rescue team at the request of
the Jordanian government.
Brig. Gen. Farid al-
Sharaa, a Civil Defense
spokesman, said Friday that
the flooding was one of the
deadliest incidents in recent
memory involving schoolchildren.
Jordan’s KingAbdullah II
canceled a planned working
visit to Bahrain, initially
scheduled for Friday. He was
to have been the keynote
speaker at a security conference.
In a message on his
Twitter account, the monarch
said that “the pain of each
father, mother and family is
my pain.” He also expressed
anger toward those who he
said “failed to take measures
that could have prevented
this painful incident,” but
stopped short of assigning
specific blame.
