and Gordon College.
When her daughter was
born, her career focus changed.
Her daughter had significant
learning challenges, and once
Soares determined there was
no adequate school to meet her
daughter’s learning challenges,
she started her own school to give
equal emphasis on academics and
vocational/independent living
skills training.
Thus Merrimac Heights
Academy was born.
“I feel lucky. This has proven
to be a true calling. So many
people never find their passion.”
Soares said.
She described the process of
becoming accredited by the
Massachusetts Department of Rehabilitation
Education as “daunting.” The
school received full approval
in January 2016 for students
ranging from ages 11 to 22.
“At Merrimac Heights
Academy, we give our students
more than an education. We give
them a fair chance to succeed in
life. We recognize that success
looks different for everyone;
occur naturally.
Over the last eight years Pau
has seen a lot of changes in the
marsh. While there is concern
among her colleagues at the
refuge, she said that the wildlife
in the marsh is adapting to the
changes. She described herself
as optimistic that the marsh and
the wildlife in it will adapt.
TOWN OF ROWLEY
COMMUNITY PRESERVATION
COMMITTEE
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
Notice is hereby given that the Rowley
Community Preservation Committee
will hold a public hearing regarding
requests for funding in accordance with
the requirements of the Community
Act, M.G.L. Chapter 44B, Section 5 (b)
(1). The purpose of the public hearing
is to discuss, with the community, the
needs, possibilities and resources of the
Town regarding the use of the Town’s
Community Preservation Fund. The
Committee seeks community input
in the areas of open space, recreation,
affordable housing and historic
preservation.
The Public Hearing will be held on
November 15th, 2018 at 5:30 PM in the
Selectmen’s Office at the Town Hall, at
which time all requests will be given due
consideration. Agenda items will include
anything else brought forth at this time.
Climbing Mt. Everest Everyday
so the program must be
personalized and meaningful for
each student,” Soares is quoted
on the school’s web site.
In addition to language and
reading challenges, some of
the students have high levels of
anxiety, school phobias and social
challenges. Only students with
significant behavioral challenges
are excluded. The school follows
the Massachusetts Curriculum
Frameworks and the publically
funded students are required to
take the state achievement tests.
“Turning 22 is a pretty scary
time for families,” Soares said.
The school works hard to make
the transition into adulthood
easier. They partner with
agencies such as Massachusetts
Commission,
Department of Developmental
Services and You’re With Us
to give the students and their
families a smoother segue into
adult years. They also focus on
promoting self-advocacy for
students from the time they
enter the school.
“We want them to achieve their
maximum level of independence.
Great Salt Marsh is Changing
Frank P. Todd
Chairman
“I think for us at the refuge,
we are beginning to understand
how our habitats are changing,”
Pau said. “We’ve conducted
long-term monitoring of how
our beaches and salt marsh
elevations are changing.”
Gilbin said the scientists
For Soares, the more
meaningful metric is the
students’ social-emotional
growth and their increased selfesteem.
“They are happy to come
to school,” she said. “For many of
these students, it is like climbing
