AHF (AIDS Healthcare Foundation) is
a Los Angeles-based global nonprofit
provider of HIV prevention services,
testing, and healthcare for HIV patients.
AHF provides medical care and
services to more than 600,000 individuals
in 15 U.S. states and 36 countries
worldwide.
That includes residents of Greater Los
Angeles, for whom AHF offers an array
of medical services and access to HIV
medications that otherwise would be
unavailable to many because of their
cost. AHF operates the Out of the Closet
thrift store chain and the AHF Pharmacy.
AHF got its start in 1987 when activists
Chris Brownlie, Mina Meyer, Sharon
Raphael and Michael Weinstein
worked with others to create the Los
Angeles AIDS Hospice Committee.
in planning and negotiating
the opening of Chris Brownlie Hospice
on the grounds of the Barlow Respiratory
Hospital.
That organization gave rise to the AIDS
Hospice Foundation and, ultimately, to
today’s AIDS Healthcare Foundation.
AHF currently serves 600,407 people
in 36 countries through global clinics
offering HIV testing, antiretroviral
and other HIV/AIDS prevention, and
treatment services. AHF’s worldwide
clinics span Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe,
the U.S. and Latin America.
AHF’s activity in Africa, where the HIV
epidemic has been especially deadly,
includes the opening of its first treatment
center outside the U.S. with the
establishment in South Africa of a
clinic in 2002 through a partnership
with the KwaZulu-Natal Department
of Health. A second site was opened in
2008 in Eastern Cape Province.
