Nearly 150 vendors at
45th Holli-Daze fair
T.J. Kremer III, Editor
Forty-five consecutive
years is a long time to do
anything, but that’s how
long the Mokena chapter of
the General Federation of
Women’s Clubs has been
hosting its Holli-Daze Arts
and Crafts Fair.
The long-running fair was
held on Saturday, Oct. 27,
and Sunday, Oct. 28, at Lincoln-Way
East High School.
The fair draws crafters
from across the midwest to
invite shoppers to check out
the unique items for sale that
can’t be found in any big box
store.
Mokena resident Andrea
Laue was there to sell her
own line of all natural skin,
hair and body care products,
all of which are hand
made. She calls her business
“MaMa RaRa’s Market.”
“It started very small,”
Laue said. “I made my very
first product ever for dogs
— it’s a paw protector. And
it all evolved from there. I
get more interested — the
more I do, the more I want
to learn.”
Another of the vendors,
Frankfort resident Jo
Galmines — who calls her
home business “Jo’s Fashions”
— has spent the past
nine years making handmade
scarves. She said she
makes around 100 scarves
in preparation for the annual
Holli-Daze fair.
“It takes a full year,”
Galmines said. “A full
year, and you have to make
scarves constantly because
one scarf could take me
three days to do, which is
about 12 hours, and another
day might only take me 2
hours. It depends on the patterns
and materials.”
All that knitting and crafting
pays off in the end, as the
proceeds from the two-day
event go toward charitable
endeavors that are based in
the local communities, according
to Mokena Women’s
Club Parliamentarian Joanne
Jeffers, who has been with
the club at every Holli-Daze
fair since its inception 45
years ago.
“The majority of our money
goes out in scholarships,”
Galmines said, noting that
Holli-Daze is the only fundraiser
the group conducts
during the year. “... Over the
years, I think we’ve given
about $140,000 in scholarships.”
The Mokena Women’s
Club meets on the second
Monday of each month at
Mokena Community Public
Library District. For more
