passenger plane that took 

off Monday from Jakarta 

crashed into the sea with 

189 people on board, all of 

whom are feared dead in

SC turns down NAB’s request 

to reopen Hudaibiya case 

Justice Mushir Alam told the bureau to point out errors 

in the Supreme Court’s earlier verdict 

that Hudaibiya Paper Mills case be reopened 

during the hearing of the Panama Papers 

case. On December 15, 2017 a three-member 

Supreme Court bench headed by Justice 

Mushir Alam had dismissed NAB’s appeal 

to reopen the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case. 

NAB had then filed an appeal against the 

decision. 

The Rs1.2 billion Hudaibiya Paper 

Mills case, involving money laundering 

charges against the Sharif family, was initiated 

by NAB in 2000 but quashed by the 

Lahore High Court (LHC) in 2014. The 

NAB had appealed the LHC decision in 

the Supreme Court.

announced ban on pillion 

riding across the province 

on Chehlum of the martyrs 

of Karbala on today 

(Tuesday). 

Provincial home department 

in a notification said, 

the Sindh government 

imposed ban on pillion riding 

on motorbikes in exercise 

of powers under 

Section 144 (6) of the criminal 

procedure code during 

the chehlum on Oct 30 and 

up to Nov 2 in the 

province.”

ISLAMABAD: The risk of having 

a stroke particularly the kind that 

results from a blood clot or other 

obstacle traveling from the heart 

appears to be greater in people who 

have higher levels of iron, according 

to recent research. 

Scientists from Imperial College 

London in the United Kingdom 

examined stroke risk in people for 

whom they had information on their 

levels of iron and whether they had 

genetic differences that altered their 

iron status. 

This yielded evidence suggesting 

that those with "genetically determined 

higher" iron levels were at 

greater risk of having a stroke, they 

note in a report on the study that 

now features in the journal Stroke. 

In addition, it seems "that this 

effect is driven by an increased risk 

of cardioembolic stroke," a type of 

stroke in which blood in a vessel 

supplying the brain is blocked due to 

an obstruction that has traveled from 

the heart. 

The study authors caution, however, 

that people should not use 

these findings as a reason to try to 

alter their iron levels, and they call 

for further research to confirm their

elections of July this year, the newly-elected 

Prime Minister Imran Khan has had to face an 

uphill task. The euphoria surrounding the victory of his 

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been replaced by a 

reality check. 

Eventually, it has become clear to many across 

Pakistan, notably the PTI supporters, that running a 

country is far more challenging than attacks launched by 

opposition parties on a ruling regime. Though Imran has 

had a breather in the past week with a Saudi promise to 

lend $6 billion (Dh22 billion) to help Pakistan overcome 

a prevailing economic crisis, that alone will not change 

the country for the better. 

In fact, the Saudi loan, along with loans from 

International Monetary Fund (IMF) and possibly China 

from whom Pakistan is expected to seek financial assistance, 

will only saddle the south Asian country with a 

bigger debt. Consequently, Pakistan will come under a 

larger debt burden. 

Meanwhile, Imran has promised to press ahead this 

week with his recently-launched attack on corruption, 

the targets of which so far have ranged from prominent 

opposition figures to some of the most affluent 

Pakistanis. But the gap in this otherwise well-meaning 

exercise remains the matter of targeting figures close to 

the prime minister. Even after filling up that gap, a new 

and meaningful change to place Pakistan on a decisive 

path to reforms will need to be undertaken. 

Time and again, many in Pakistan have heard the old 

adage referring to the country as a “poor land with some 

incredibly rich people”. That reference strikes right at 

the heart of Pakistan’s multiple dilemmas. The country’s 

elites in previous decades have ripped off public 

resources in more ways than one without giving back 

anything. It is therefore not surprising that across 

Pakistan, key fundamental service — notably health

country needs another leader like the great Bhutto 

ZAB once more.” Other leaders have rightly 

acknowledged that the nation was still suffering 

from the horrible consequences of one wrong action 

and in aftermath of 1979 execution of a socialist PPP 

founder and once prime minister of Pakistan 

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Pakistan's ruling clique was, it's 

believed, encouraged to kill him for his fire-like 

speeches that made the masses simply mad with joy. 

ONE concept badly needed ever since ZAB was 

hanged in a dictatorial era in Pakistan is still acutely 

felt to be concept of freedom and sovereignty, independence 

and non-slavery, without affiliation or subservience 

to any big power, be it America, 

Saudi/Mideast, India, Russia or China. 

THIS was one agenda almost totally absent from 

most Pakistani governments who captured power 

through what's generally alleged and believed to be 

unfair and bogus elections. PPP and nation must 

now support reformers if they ever valued their party 

founder who died for them too. ZAB was a people's 

leader through and through. They sang with him, 

they sobbed with him, they became angry like ZAB 

at repressive and undemocratic policies. With that 

end in thoughts, his party or whatever is left of it, 

and his followers alike, must support reformers and 

make way for active electoral reforms taking place 

for true democracy, not a sham democracy. 

CONCEPT of freedom and independence from 

inhuman and unjustifiable interference of any kind 

at any plane and expediency is one overall agenda 

that must always be present in Pakistani and Muslim 

world politics, to avoid further slavery and unjust 

dependence on evil foreign influences and to 

decrease and terminate a series of anti-people policies 

and actions by both ruling and opposition parties 

propped up on crutches provided and held by big 

powers and their satanic divide and rule policies and 

their killing and plundering series.

care, education and jobs — remain elusive for many. 

Imran will need to embark upon a three-pronged 

action very soon if he wants to earn the trust of the 

Pakistani public for the long term. 

First, as he pursues his promise of a relentless attack 

on corruption, it is important for the prime minister to 

oversee the targeting of individuals from his party and 

not just the opposition. On the contrary, merely targeting 

opposition figures will quickly make this long-overdue 

exercise only a half-hearted one, driven only by partisan 

objectives. It is possible that a credible anti-corruption 

campaign will encourage important and wellendowed 

prospective businessmen to refrain from 

investing in Pakistan. But the long-term benefits must 

not be ignored. Second, as Imran gears up to lead 

Pakistan towards progressive change, he must take 

charge of his own government and that too decisively. In 

the weeks since Imran came to power, Pakistanis have 

been left with the impression of a ruling structure in 

some ways still reminiscent of its days in the opposition. 

Different ministers choose routinely to delve in inconsequential 

matters while others issue astoundingly outlandish 

statements. A very vocal provincial minister 

from the PTI in the Punjab province, for instance, chose 

to claim publicly that Pakistan last year saw up to 

$1,000 billion in money laundering. That indeed has 

baffled many knowledgeable experts who know that the 

actual scale of the issue, though very problematic, is far 

less than claimed by the minister. 

Finally, Imran has placed too much on his plate, 

which he may not be able to swallow easily. As the 

country’s prime minister, it is incumbent upon him to 

simply focus on a narrow range of the most vital issues 

while delegating authority to the other members of his 

Cabinet. And if the new government’s ministers are 

incapable of taking responsibility, it’s vital that such 

non-performers must be dismissed immediately and 

replaced quickly by those who can deliver.

Unemployment is at its highest peak. All professions are over-crowded. A graduate is not welcomed in 

any office. There is no scope in the professions of medical, engineering, law and education. Hundreds of 

qualified youngsters are wandering in search of jobs. Thousands of labourers and workers are jobless in 

cities and villages. 

Unemployment is a social evil. It is a source of discontent, depression and anxiety for the educated as 

well as the uneducated people. Corruption, crime, unrest, sin and vices of all sorts prevail in a society where 

people are unemployed. It brings hunger, starvation, and disease. The frustrated youngsters are falling a 

prey to violence, theft, terrorism, drugs-addiction, drug-trafficking and many other heinous crimes. 

In the end we can say that unemployment is a real problem. We know its causes, we know its remedies, 

therefore. It becomes the constitutional obligation of the government should make plans to solve this problem.

net profit after tax of PKR 2.96

PSO posts Profit after Tax (PAT) 

of Rs 4.2 billion in Q1FY2019 

BEGINS: Pakistan State Oil, the country’s flagship oil 

marketing company, has announced it Q1FY19 financial 

results. The Company has reported a Profit after Tax (PAT) of 

Rs. 4.2 billion. The announcement was made during a Board 

of Management (BoM) meeting at PSO Headquarters in 

Karachi convened to review the Company’s performance for 

the quarter ended September 30, 2018. 

Despite numerous challenges, PSO’s gross profit grew by 

19% while it maintained its leadership position in the liquid 

fuels market with an overall share of 40% during the period under review. During the 

Q1FY19, PSO imported 48% of total industry imports and uplifted 34% of total country 

refinery production in the country. 

The Company has shown a healthy bottom line in spite of a mix of external and 

internal factors that have negatively affected the local industry growth. These factors 

include influx of smuggled products, increasing international price trends, adulteration, 

heavy discounts offered by new entrants, and exploitation of the IFEM mechanism. 

The BoM also discussed key challenges the company has been facing in recent 

months including the reduction in other income consequential to lower interest income, 

higher exchange loss on account of PKR devaluation, and increase in finance cost due 

to higher markup rates and borrowing levels. These have resulted in a decline in the 

Company's PAT. 

As of September 30th, 2018, PSO’s total outstanding receivables (inclusive of LPS) 

from the Power Sector, PIA, and SNGPL stood at Rs. 310 billion vs Rs. 316 billion as 

of June 30, 2018. This is in addition of Rs. 21 billion recoverable from the Ministry 

of Finance on account of exchange rate differential on foreign currency loans and price 

differential claims. The management is continuously pursuing the Ministries of Energy 

and Finance for re-payment of PSO’s receivables. The management expressed sincere 

gratitude to all stakeholders including Government of Pakistan, especially Ministry of

It will be a 30-hour long 

trip and passengers will get

KARACHI: After a 

thorough investigation, the 

Balochistan Environmental 

Protection Agency (BEPA) 

has confirmed that Byco 

Petroleum Pakistan Ltd. 

(BPPL) had absolutely no 

leakage or loss of containment 

from any of its facilities, 

says a release of Byco 

Petroleum Pakistan Limited 

(BPPL) here. 

This has been further 

confirmed also by the 

Pakistan Maritime Security 

Agency (PMSA). BEPA 

and PMSA had conducted 

their investigation starting 

October 25, including conducting 

aerial survey to 

determine the source of the 

leakage that washed up on 

the shores of Mubarak 

Village. Their findings 

showed no evidence of 

leakage at Byco’s facilities. 

As part of its own investigation, 

Byco tested a sample 

of the oil found at the 

site and found it to be 

bunker oil, which is not produced 

at Byco’s refinery, 

nor at any other refinery in 

Pakistan. Bunker oil is used 

by ships as fuel and it is 

most likely that in this case 

the bunker oil was dumped 

by a ship being taken to 

Gadani for shipbreaking.
