ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court dismissed
on Monday National Accountability
Bureau’s review petition in Hudaibiya Paper
Mills case.
A three-judge special bench headed by
Justice Mushir Alam and comprising Justice
Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Mazhar Alam
Miankhel heard the review petition.
Justice Isa said that the probe body could
not point out any legal mistake in the decision.
“We have heard the merits and details
as well,” said the judge.
Justice Isa enquired NAB regarding a
delay of ‘1,299 days in making an appeal’.
Justice Asif Saeed Khosa had directed
Jakarta’s airport shortly
after takeoff, and his
request was cleared by air
traffic controllers. The
plane then lost contact with
controllers and plunged into
the sea from 3,000 feet.
Authorities quickly
launched a search-andrescue
mission but later said
they do not expect to find
any survivors. Throughout
the day Monday, rescuers
pulled debris out of the sea,
including parts of the aircraft’s
fuselage, ID cards
and bags belonging to the
passengers. Body parts
NAB had appealed the LHC decision in
US Consul General visits
wind corridor in Jhimpir
KARACHI: The US
Consul General in Karachi,
JoAnne Wagner on Monday
visited the wind corridor in
Jhimpir to review U.S.
Government investments in
the area. She visited the
Agency for International
Development (USAID) and
the Hawa Wind Power
Project financed in partnership
with the Overseas
Private Investment
Corporation (OPIC).
The United States and
Pakistan have a long history
of cooperation in the energy
sector and are working
together to help attract private
sector investment in
clean energy sources such as
wind, solar, geothermal, and
hydro. Consul General
Wagner was pleased to note
the progress made at the sites
and commended the results
of the public-private partnership
which had transformed
the area.
The United States
Government has supported
the National Transmission
and Dispatch Company
(NTDC) for a transmission
system that connects 780
megawatts of wind energy
to the national grid – enough
to power over 150,000
homes. Recognizing the
potential for private sector
investment in the area,
OPIC, the investment arm
of the U.S. Government, has
invested in five wind power
projects in the Gharo-
CPEC projects will be
KARACHI: Pakistan
Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)
MNA Nusrat Wahid said
Monday that Saudi Arabian
assistance would improve
economic condition of
Pakistan.
“This will also increase
economic activities and the
country will soon be out of
the economic crisis,” she
said during a meeting with
the representatives of business
community. Due to
previous government’s
wrong economic policies,
the country had trapped in a
swamp as a result, the rupee
value had further depleted
and the US dollar rate had
gone up."
Wahid said: “Increase in
investments, reduction in
poverty and lower commodity
prices are the main
priorities of the present
government, while
investors’ confidence will
be restored soon. We will
make the country a centre
of economic activities
while CPEC projects will
be completed on priority
basis.” She said they would
provide full assistance to
the local as well as foreign
investors and also ensure
them basic facilities. The
present difficulties are temporary
and all promises
made with public will be
fulfilled, she said.
The MNA said that overseas
Pakistanis should play
their due role to improve
the economy of the country
and increase the foreign
exchange reserves of the
country. We will pull the
country out of the economic
crisis, she concluded.
ISLAMABAD: The risk of having
a stroke particularly the kind that
results from a blood clot or other
obstacle traveling from the heart
appears to be greater in people who
have higher levels of iron, according
to recent research.
Scientists from Imperial College
London in the United Kingdom
examined stroke risk in people for
whom they had information on their
levels of iron and whether they had
genetic differences that altered their
iron status.
This yielded evidence suggesting
that those with "genetically determined
higher" iron levels were at
greater risk of having a stroke, they
note in a report on the study that
now features in the journal Stroke.
In addition, it seems "that this
effect is driven by an increased risk
of cardioembolic stroke," a type of
stroke in which blood in a vessel
supplying the brain is blocked due to
an obstruction that has traveled from
the heart.
The study authors caution, however,
that people should not use
these findings as a reason to try to
alter their iron levels, and they call
JHANG: The Punjab
government has decided to
retrieve 625-acre agriculture
The former federal minister
had acquired the government
influence. However,
Hussain had taken stay
orders from a court.
According to details,
former Punjab government
the government land back
from her; however, it could
not do so due to political
interference.
Now the PTI-led
Punjab government has
decided to launch a grand
operation to recover the
confiscated land under the
light of Supreme Court
orders. A heavy contingent
She has prayed the
time of operation against
encroachment.
Hussain had taken 625-
acre agriculture land on
took the decision after
getting green signal from
Prime Minister Imran Khan.
World stroke day: Almost 1 in 8 deaths
worldwide are caused by stroke
ISLAMABAD: Dr.
Maimoona Siddiqui, HOD
& Consultant Neurologist
at Shifa International
Hospital (SIH) on occasion
of World stroke Day
said that Around 80 million
people living in the
world today have experienced
a stroke and as a
result over 50 million survivors
live with some
form of permanent disability.
While for many, life
Sciences, after stroke won’t be quite
Sciences, the same but with the right
care and support living a
meaningful life is still possible.
For millions of stroke
survivors, it is possible to
get #Up Again After
Stroke.
While the impact of
stroke will be different for
everyone, self-resilience
and strong determination
are the key factors which
unite stroke survivors and
caregivers to keep going
on the recovery journey.
Stroke is the second
most common cause of
death globally, causing
around 6.7 million deaths
each year and taking a life
every five seconds. The
burden of stroke due to illness,
disability and early
death it causes is set to
double worldwide within
the next 15 years. Almost
1 in 8 deaths worldwide
are caused by stroke.
Dr. Maimoona said that
Stroke happens when
blood supply to the part of
brain is cut off. Without
blood, brain cells can get
damaged or die.
It can happen to anyone
at any age, and impacts
Too much iron may raise the risk of certain strokes
795,000 people have a stroke every
year and about 140,000 die,
accounting for 1 out of 20 deaths.
The majority of strokes are of the
ischemic type, which occurs when a
blockage in a blood vessel has
stopped oxygen- and nutrient-rich
blood reaching the affected part of
the brain.
Cardioembolic stroke accounts
for a notable proportion of ischemic
strokes and is often linked to a heart
condition called atrial fibrillation,
wherein the heart beats irregularly
and often faster than normal.
Iron has many uses in the body,
the main one being to carry oxygen
everyone: survivors, family
and friends, workplaces
and communities. The
theme of this year is to
Support, that we are with
stroke survivors and their
families in their journey
back to independent life.
She added that In
Pakistan the annual mortality
rate per 100,000
people from stroke has
increased by 40.9% since
1990, an average of 1.8%
a year. 350,000 Pakistanis
suffer from stroke every
year. Mortality ranges 11-
30%, 118,545 lives
(Females 61,289 – Males
57,256). 80% of all
strokes are preventable.
She briefly described the
clinical presentation and
risk factors and importance
of educating general
public on the issue.
in red blood cells. The authors
explain that studies have examined
links between iron levels and stroke
risk, but the results have been "conflicting."
Some studies, for example, have
tied a raised risk of stroke to low levels
of iron, while others have tied it
to high levels of iron. In addition,
there have also been studies that
have found no link at all.
Dr. Gill explains that they decided
to investigate further because
there have also been studies that
have "suggested that in some cases
iron can actually trigger blood to
form a clot."
The first part of the team's investigation
involved identifying genetic
differences that influence how much
iron people have, which is known as
their "iron status."
They searched public data
sources that held genetic information
on more than 48,000 people.
Using a technique called
Mendelian randomization, the scientists
identified three "single-letter
alterations," or single nucleotide
polymorphisms (SNPs), in their
DNA that can raise or reduce an
individual's iron status.

ONE more commemoration of hanging to
death anniversary of a great leader Zulfiqar
Ali Bhutto went by with winners in celebrations
making grand speeches and showmanship
but the occasion was sadly marked by their majority
of losers without practice of ZAB ideology, perhaps
crying over failure of self serving political rulers in
servitude to internal and external vested interests
without free and independent policies and actions in
Pakistan.
ZULFIQAR Ali Bhutto was showered much
praise in absentia, some by those who displayed
courage of convictions neither in his lifetime, especially
during his trial, imprisonment and hanging,
nor practiced his anti-slavery ideology after his execution.
THEN there are others who sharply condemn
him, saying he "deserves national wrath for nationalizing
national assets, wealth and resources"!
Returning this country's national wealth back to this
nation as its rightful owner and beneficiary was
described by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's adversaries as an
unforgivable crime. That shows the nature of the
kind of enemies ZAB was faced with during his lifetime,
and faced by this nation after his death.
MAJORITY of followers of Pakistan People's
Party, of which he was a founder, believe that ZAB
gave the world the vision of a modern Islamic
nation, and that he was a thought, a philosophy and
a university, an institution and a government in himself
for the people he loved so much, lived and died
for.
ZULFIQAR Ali Bhutto was the hope for the
common man. He gathered leaders of the Muslim
world for unity and united Islamic power worldwide,
and gave this nation the atomic bomb program,
with Pakistan eventually becoming the only
Muslim nuclear power country in Islamic world.
EVEN many of ZAB enemies believe that this
By Farhan Bokhari
In just over two months since Pakistan’s parliamentary
elections of July this year, the newly-elected
Prime Minister Imran Khan has had to face an
uphill task. The euphoria surrounding the victory of his
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been replaced by a
reality check.
Eventually, it has become clear to many across
Pakistan, notably the PTI supporters, that running a
country is far more challenging than attacks launched by
opposition parties on a ruling regime. Though Imran has
had a breather in the past week with a Saudi promise to
lend $6 billion (Dh22 billion) to help Pakistan overcome
a prevailing economic crisis, that alone will not change
the country for the better.
In fact, the Saudi loan, along with loans from
International Monetary Fund (IMF) and possibly China
from whom Pakistan is expected to seek financial assistance,
will only saddle the south Asian country with a
bigger debt. Consequently, Pakistan will come under a
larger debt burden.
Meanwhile, Imran has promised to press ahead this
week with his recently-launched attack on corruption,
the targets of which so far have ranged from prominent
opposition figures to some of the most affluent
Pakistanis. But the gap in this otherwise well-meaning
exercise remains the matter of targeting figures close to
the prime minister. Even after filling up that gap, a new
and meaningful change to place Pakistan on a decisive
path to reforms will need to be undertaken.
Time and again, many in Pakistan have heard the old
adage referring to the country as a “poor land with some
incredibly rich people”. That reference strikes right at
the heart of Pakistan’s multiple dilemmas. The country’s
elites in previous decades have ripped off public
resources in more ways than one without giving back
anything. It is therefore not surprising that across
Pakistan, key fundamental service — notably health
country needs another leader like the great Bhutto
ZAB once more.” Other leaders have rightly
acknowledged that the nation was still suffering
from the horrible consequences of one wrong action
and in aftermath of 1979 execution of a socialist PPP
founder and once prime minister of Pakistan
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Pakistan's ruling clique was, it's
believed, encouraged to kill him for his fire-like
speeches that made the masses simply mad with joy.
ONE concept badly needed ever since ZAB was
hanged in a dictatorial era in Pakistan is still acutely
felt to be concept of freedom and sovereignty, independence
and non-slavery, without affiliation or subservience
to any big power, be it America,
Saudi/Mideast, India, Russia or China.
THIS was one agenda almost totally absent from
most Pakistani governments who captured power
through what's generally alleged and believed to be
unfair and bogus elections. PPP and nation must
now support reformers if they ever valued their party
founder who died for them too. ZAB was a people's
leader through and through. They sang with him,
they sobbed with him, they became angry like ZAB
at repressive and undemocratic policies. With that
end in thoughts, his party or whatever is left of it,
and his followers alike, must support reformers and
make way for active electoral reforms taking place
for true democracy, not a sham democracy.
CONCEPT of freedom and independence from
inhuman and unjustifiable interference of any kind
at any plane and expediency is one overall agenda
that must always be present in Pakistani and Muslim
world politics, to avoid further slavery and unjust
dependence on evil foreign influences and to
decrease and terminate a series of anti-people policies
and actions by both ruling and opposition parties
propped up on crutches provided and held by big
powers and their satanic divide and rule policies and
their killing and plundering series.
Imran Khan has his task cut out
The new prime minister of Pakistan must set his country’s priorities
right as dangers of a debt trap loom large
Unemployment
care, education and jobs — remain elusive for many.
Imran will need to embark upon a three-pronged
action very soon if he wants to earn the trust of the
Pakistani public for the long term.
First, as he pursues his promise of a relentless attack
on corruption, it is important for the prime minister to
oversee the targeting of individuals from his party and
not just the opposition. On the contrary, merely targeting
opposition figures will quickly make this long-overdue
exercise only a half-hearted one, driven only by partisan
objectives. It is possible that a credible anti-corruption
campaign will encourage important and wellendowed
prospective businessmen to refrain from
investing in Pakistan. But the long-term benefits must
not be ignored. Second, as Imran gears up to lead
Pakistan towards progressive change, he must take
charge of his own government and that too decisively. In
the weeks since Imran came to power, Pakistanis have
been left with the impression of a ruling structure in
some ways still reminiscent of its days in the opposition.
Different ministers choose routinely to delve in inconsequential
matters while others issue astoundingly outlandish
statements. A very vocal provincial minister
from the PTI in the Punjab province, for instance, chose
to claim publicly that Pakistan last year saw up to
$1,000 billion in money laundering. That indeed has
baffled many knowledgeable experts who know that the
actual scale of the issue, though very problematic, is far
less than claimed by the minister.
Finally, Imran has placed too much on his plate,
which he may not be able to swallow easily. As the
country’s prime minister, it is incumbent upon him to
simply focus on a narrow range of the most vital issues
while delegating authority to the other members of his
Cabinet. And if the new government’s ministers are
incapable of taking responsibility, it’s vital that such
non-performers must be dismissed immediately and
replaced quickly by those who can deliver.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor
Unemployment is at its highest peak. All professions are over-crowded. A graduate is not welcomed in
any office. There is no scope in the professions of medical, engineering, law and education. Hundreds of
qualified youngsters are wandering in search of jobs. Thousands of labourers and workers are jobless in
cities and villages.
Unemployment is a social evil. It is a source of discontent, depression and anxiety for the educated as
well as the uneducated people. Corruption, crime, unrest, sin and vices of all sorts prevail in a society where
people are unemployed. It brings hunger, starvation, and disease. The frustrated youngsters are falling a
prey to violence, theft, terrorism, drugs-addiction, drug-trafficking and many other heinous crimes.
In the end we can say that unemployment is a real problem. We know its causes, we know its remedies,
therefore. It becomes the constitutional obligation of the government should make plans to solve this problem.
Sri Lanka's president
faces calls to end
political crisis
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka
President Maithripala Sirisena
is under increasing pressure to
uphold the island nation’s constitution
and reconvene parliament
after his decision to
triggered political turmoil.
Sri Lanka was plunged
into the crisis on Friday when
Sirisena sacked Prime
Minister
Ranil
Wickremesinghe and swore in
ex-president Mahinda
Rajapaksa to replace him,
breaking up a fragile coalition
governing the island.
Wickremesinghe said his
sacking was illegal and he
maintained that he was still
prime minister and had the
support of a majority of members
of parliament.
Syrian Kurds boost
fight against Islamic State
in east after setback
BEIRUT/BAGHDAD:
Syrian Kurdish special
forces have joined an
offensive against Islamic
State militants in eastern
Syria, a commander said,
after the jihadists recovered
ground from U.S.-backed
forces in a fierce counter
attack.
Islamic State (IS)
launched the assault
against the U.S.-backed
Syrian Democratic Forces
(SDF) in the Deir al-Zor
region near the Iraqi border
on Friday. Iraqi Shi’ite
militias reinforced their
side of the frontier in
response and Iraq’s military
said it was ready to
take on any militants who
tried to cross.
The Syrian Observatory
for Human Rights said
around 70 SDF fighters
were killed in the assault
which Islamic State
launched under cover of a
sandstorm and drew on suicide
bombers and female
jihadists. The SDF says it
lost 14 fighters.
A spokesman for the
U.S.-led coalition said
Islamic State had been able
to regain some ground but
the SDF would “come back
with coalition support”.
An SDF commander
attributed the setback partly
to the relative inexperience
of the Arab SDF
forces which have carried
out much of the fighting
against hardened Islamic
State militants in Deir al-
Zor.
While the Arab fighters
of the Deir al-Zor Military
Council had been able to
make advances to a “certain
level”, Islamic State is
resisting even more fiercely
as the offensive closes in
on its last pockets.
PSO posts Profit after Tax (PAT)
of Rs 4.2 billion in Q1FY2019
BEGINS: Pakistan State Oil, the country’s flagship oil
marketing company, has announced it Q1FY19 financial
results. The Company has reported a Profit after Tax (PAT) of
Rs. 4.2 billion. The announcement was made during a Board
of Management (BoM) meeting at PSO Headquarters in
Karachi convened to review the Company’s performance for
the quarter ended September 30, 2018.
Despite numerous challenges, PSO’s gross profit grew by
19% while it maintained its leadership position in the liquid
fuels market with an overall share of 40% during the period under review. During the
Q1FY19, PSO imported 48% of total industry imports and uplifted 34% of total country
refinery production in the country.
The Company has shown a healthy bottom line in spite of a mix of external and
internal factors that have negatively affected the local industry growth. These factors
include influx of smuggled products, increasing international price trends, adulteration,
heavy discounts offered by new entrants, and exploitation of the IFEM mechanism.
The BoM also discussed key challenges the company has been facing in recent
months including the reduction in other income consequential to lower interest income,
higher exchange loss on account of PKR devaluation, and increase in finance cost due
to higher markup rates and borrowing levels. These have resulted in a decline in the
Company's PAT.
As of September 30th, 2018, PSO’s total outstanding receivables (inclusive of LPS)
from the Power Sector, PIA, and SNGPL stood at Rs. 310 billion vs Rs. 316 billion as
of June 30, 2018. This is in addition of Rs. 21 billion recoverable from the Ministry
of Finance on account of exchange rate differential on foreign currency loans and price
differential claims. The management is continuously pursuing the Ministries of Energy
and Finance for re-payment of PSO’s receivables. The management expressed sincere
gratitude to all stakeholders including Government of Pakistan, especially Ministry of
Energy and shareholders of the Company for their continued support. The
Management also thanked PSO team for their resolute and commitment as the company
gears up to meet the upcoming challenges.
down Aaron Finch by a spot
and compatriot Fakhar
fall of three places.
The other big mover
among the batsmen was
bunker oil, which is not produced
at Byco’s refinery,
nor at any other refinery in
by ships as fuel and it is
most likely that in this case
the bunker oil was dumped
by a ship being taken to
Khuhro sees NRO between
PTI and PML-N
Nawaz
Sharif has made NRO with
PTI that is why he is silent
and does not allow the
opposition to unite.
This was stated by Nisar
Ahmed Khuhro, President,
PPP, Sindh, while talking to
newsmen after an event
held at village Akil for distribution
of sewing
machines and hand pumps
among the poverty-stricken
villagers on Monday.
Khuhro said NRO was done
between Imran Khan and
Nawaz Sharif when Sharif
got the bail after which
Nawaz League leadership
was constantly silent.
He said Prime Minister
Imran Khan had announced
that nobody would be given
NRO and Nawaz Sharif had
also declared that he would
not obtain NRO but now
from the silence of Nawaz
Sharif it appeared that NRO
had been made between
PTI government and PML-
Nawaz. Khuhro alleged that
Nawaz Sharif and PM
Imran Khan both were liars.
He said claims of PTI
government about not giving
NRO had been exposed
before the people.
Replying to a question,
Khuhro said that no body
was afraid of imposing
Governor Rule in Sindh.
He said NAB should conduct
accountability independently
and its acts
should not be based on victimization.
He said PPP
was not afraid of cases and
jails as its leadership had
faced all these things.
PPP's provincial leader
said that PTI was running
the country like D-Chowk
sit-in. Khuhro announced
that every month, free
sewing machines would be
distributed among destitute
poor women so that
they could earn their livelihood
while sitting at their
own houses. He said PPP
was always giving
employment to the people
but PTI was for snatching
the same. He claimed that
so far 500 sewing
machines had been distributed
among the deserving
women likewise wheelchairs
will also be given to
disabled persons so that
they can pass their lives
without support of others.
