How to Pack Your Electronics
Before a Move
It’s common knowledge that fragile objects, like glass objects, are vulnerable during a
move. It’s less known that electronics are also vulnerable during this time. Because of
this vulnerability, electronics must be properly packed and protected before you move.
To ensure your precious devices, like your laptops, tablets, and TVs aren’t damaged
during transport, use some of the tips below.
Pack Electronics in Three-Ply Cardboard Boxes and Anti-Static Bubble Wrap
It’s ideal to pack your electronic devices in their original packaging, but if it isn’t
available, three-ply cardboard boxes and anti-static bubble wrap is the next best thing.
Beyond the boxes and bubble wrap, you will also need pens, paper, and tape. Three-ply
boxes are highly recommended because they’re the sturdiest.

Anti-static bubble wrap should be used to pad the bottom of the boxes instead of used
to wrap devices. Wrapping an electronic device in any bubble wrap, could damage the
screen. Instead, wrap devices in blankets and place them on the bubble wrap padding.
Fill in any gaps in the boxes with paper or more bubble wrap. This will prevent your
electronics from moving while they’re being moved. The tape is needed for simply
sealing the boxes lengthwise, while the markers can be used to give the boxes a “fragile”
label.
Disconnect Cables and other Components
Important components and cables should be removed and/or disconnected from
electronic devices before they’re packed. Batteries, cables, ink cartridges, etc., should
be removed from printers, televisions, game consoles, and all other electronic devices,
then bagged, tagged, and labelled. Make sure you put all the components and
connections for a device in their own bag with a label that specifies what device they
belong to. Use small tags as labels to also specify where each cable or component
belongs on a device. Wrap the cables with bag ties or elastic bands to prevent tangles.
They can be placed in the boxes with their respective devices, but make sure they’re
stable before sealing.
Use the Original Packaging
If there was ever a reason to keep the original packaging for electronic devices, having
to move them one day is the best reason. Packing your devices into their original boxes
is the safest, more convenient way to transport them. It’s especially safe if you use the
original foam protection many electronic devices are packed with. These foam
structures not only provide protection, they also provide stability. So, by using the
original packaging, you can ensure your electronics won’t move and become vulnerable
to breakage or other damage. However, no matter what packaging you use, hiring a
reliable moving company like Pro Service Moving is the best way to ensure the safety of
your electronics.
