Westgate HOA President’s Letter 

Hello Westgaters! 

Your HOA Board-Puneet Saggar, Abel Gonzalez and I-have been hard at work improving the neighborhood. Here are some of the items on which we’ve 

been working: 

• Choosing two new playgrounds to replace two old wooden ones at parks on Heathridge and Westgate Park Dr. and Heathridge and Crestbury 

• Getting proposals to improve security at the poolhouse and big park 

• Repairing park equipment (we appreciate the help from residents who report the problems to the Board by email) 

• Getting proposals for new fence on Blue Wahoo and to repair fencing on Barker Cypress, Westgate Park Dr. and Forest Heights 

• Choosing new pool furniture to replace the old and adding some 

• Working with vendors to ensure we are getting what we are paying for and keep up with problems that occur 

• Building a new Westgate website 

• Fielding suggestions and concerns from residents to produce results 

• Working on the 2019 Budget 

This is by no means an exhaustive list, just some of the highlights of the last three months or so. 

Speaking of the 2019 Budget, you should have received a letter by now regarding the 5% increase in annual dues; this amounts to an increase of $30. 

Everyone’s bills have increased-lights, water, repairs, etc.-and the HOA’s bills are no different. This minimal increase covers the cost of living increases 

we are all experiencing. The last time the HOA dues went up three years ago was solely because of adding a new yearly expense of the HCSO deputy. 

Dues have not increased for regular costs going up since before residents took over the Board in 2014. The total annual dues are $635, still relatively 

low for a neighborhood like ours in this area, especially since we are still adding amenities, while at the same time, replacing old ones.

Another item of interest: you may have seen damage to common areas along Fair Grange. It has also happened in other neighborhoods along 

Longenbaugh. This lawn damage was caused by wild hogs. They are mainly nocturnal and can be aggressive, so please be alert to your surroundings 

at night. Do not confront the animals if you see them; just report it to the county. We have notified the county and are considering our options about 

what to do. 

The Board hopes residents have been enjoying the neighborhood events we’ve been having. Volunteers make that possible and we could always use 

more help for better events. Please contact the Board if you’d like to get involved.

Christmas Decoration Contest 

BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR LIGHTS ON TO BE INCLUDED IN THE CONTEST! 

Just wanted to give a heads-up to all the Westgate residents out there 

who like to show their holiday spirit! We’re having a Christmas Decoration 

Contest again this year! Winners not only get bragging rights, but also gift 

card prizes! 

The judges will drive around and judge the decorations on one weekend 

in December; be sure to tune in to our Facebook page and website to find 

out exactly when. 

So be sure to have your decoration lights on BOTH THOSE DAYS if you want 

to participate. Afterward, we’ll announce the winners. The newsletter 

won’t have the winners in print until the February edition, but we will 

have it immediately on Facebook (Westgate Subdivision group) and the 

Westgate Website (www.westgatetx.com).

Ready For Your Buyers’ Inspection?

Congratulations, the wait is over. You received a contract for the purchase 

of your home. Now you’re thinking of your move to your “Dream” home, 

but before you can move, one more step must be completed. The buyers 

of your home will have the home inspected by a licensed residential 

home inspector. The home inspection gives many sellers sleepless 

nights. Below are simple suggestions to help make the inspection go 

smoother and allow you to sleep better at night. 

• Take care of any items that need repair, especially simple items. Do not 

try to hide them! The inspector will find them and the buyers will wonder 

what else is wrong with the home. 

• Replace any burnt out lightbulbs in the home. This will ensure the 

inspector does not report possible electrical issues with ceiling fans, light 

fixtures or recessed lighting. 

• The AC is one of the most common items called out on an inspection 

report. Have your HVAC serviced and change all filters before the 

inspection. 

• Trim all bushes back about 6” away from your home and make sure 

the mulch in the flower beds leaves a minimum of 4” of the foundation 

exposed to ensure no comments about conducive environment for wood 

destroying insects.

National Night Out with Food and Fun 

Thanks to everyone who came out to National Night Out. Thanks to Neil Staley and Helen Haldeman for 

organizing the food trucks, appearances by HCSO deputies and CFVFD Station 8 firefighters. 

National Night Out had a good turnout on Tuesday, October 2 nd . The parents and kids enjoyed the tasty 

treats from Myla’s Ice and the delicious bites from Skye Café, a local food truck owned by Westgate 

resident Lena Lindsay; thanks Lena! Even though it was a little muggy, it was still a great time and great 

way to meet some of your neighbors. Residents from different sections signed in and the section with the 

most residents who showed up to the event won a $400 block party for their section (section 17); second 

place got one for $300 (section 15). Congrats to 17 and 15!

Do You Know Your Deed Restrictions? 

In an effort to educate our residents, each month we highlight some deed 

restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate: 

Garage Sales: In the Declaration of Covenants,…, Article VII, section B., 

pg. 11: “Garage sales or yard sales…[are] prohibited. The Association 

may…provide for a community wide garage sale.” Also, Texas state 

law considers garage sales an “uncurable” violation that can incur an 

IMMEDIATE fine. Our fine policy states that fine will be $50. 

Please only have garage sales on community wide garage sales days. 

We have one in the spring and one in the fall. Having them at any other 

time may result in an immediate fine. Why? Unexpected traffic concerns 

and parking congestion, as well as other kinds of disruptions, occur 

during random garage sales in the neighborhood. Also, people leaving 

their signs up after the sale is over increases the trash on the common 

areas. Having a community wide garage sale enables people to have 

warning to prepare for garage sales and limits the number of times they 

have to deal with difficulties, but also allows homeowners to occasionally 

have sales to clear out their clutter. It’s a compromise. 

Following these instructions helps keep our neighborhood looking neat 

and thus keeps up our property values. Home condition tends to be a 

contagious condition-good or bad. Let’s be considerate of our neighbors!

Procedure When Filing a 

Report with the Sheriff’s Dept. 

If you ever have to file a report with the Sheriff’s Department, whether 

after calling 911 or the nonemergency number (713-221-6000), be sure to 

let the deputy know that Westgate has a contract with the Sheriff’s Dept. 

through our MUD district (Harris County MUD #70). That way, the incident 

will be reported to our contract deputies, giving them information on 

what to look for in our community. Also, be sure to report the issue to our 

Crime Watch committee at crimewatch@westgatetx.net. They discuss 

the problems with our deputies as well. 

Recommended Tradespeople List 

on the Westgate Facebook Page 

Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done, 

but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well, 

we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s 

List:” “Recommended Tradespeople And Businesses.” All people and 

businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have 

had personal experiences with them. We also have a list for businesses 

actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who 

provide Services.” If you are a resident who owns a business, provide a 

description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc. 

Support your neighbors by checking it out; you might find what you need 

very close to home! To access the documents, go to www.facebook.com 

and search for “Westgate Subdivision.” Look at the top of the page under 

“Files” and you’ll see them there! Add yours to the list!

Unite To Raise Awareness 

For Childhood Cancer 

In helping raise awareness for childhood cancer, Cypress Lakes and 

Cypress Springs high schools joined together for one week in September, 

which is observed as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and featured 

groups, schools and business incorporating gold ribbons into their 

events. 

That was the case with Cypress Lakes and Cypress Springs in their ‘Gold 

Out’ game September 22 nd at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium. 

Both schools sold t-shirts leading up to the game, with the proceeds going 

to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. On gameday, students, 

staff and supporters proudly displayed their t-shirts, which featured gold 

lettering and proclaimed support for the battle against childhood cancer. 

“My cousin’s daughter has leukemia,” said Cypress Springs assistant

principal Kimberly Johnson, who was among the Panthers’ supporters 

wearing the school’s blue-colored ‘Gold Out’ attire. “She’s only two years 

old, so this is very personal to me.” 

A presentation was made during halftime, with Eduardo and Katina Robalino 

and their three daughters accepting a check worth $3,150 on behalf of 

the foundation. One of their daughters, Elena Robalino, was diagnosed 

with monolithic lymphoma in July 2017 and the family acknowledged the 

crowds from both schools for their support and effort in raising awareness. 

“I bought the shirt because of the cause,” said Karina Olivia, a Cypress 

Springs supporter and parent. “I’m always supporting something like that 

for kids. 

“Kids are the future.” 

Game participants were treated a combine halftime performance from the 

Cypress Springs Panteras and Cypress Lakes Sterling Stars, continuing a 

six-year relationship between the drill teams. They also participated in the 

fundraising and donated more than $1,400 to the Pediatric Cancer Research 

Foundation.

awarded for achievement and progress in the following areas:

Distinction Designations 

Nine CFISD campuses were recognized for earning all possible distinction 

designations by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) during the Board of 

Trustees meeting October 8 th . 

The honored campuses were: Birkes, Holbrook, Lowery, Pope, Sampson

rigorous criteria to earn the highest level of recognition in the state 

accountability system.

St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will be hosting a Blood Drive on Sunday,

Carlos Cruz-Diez at the Cistern: Spatial Chromointerference 

- Weekly through January 13, 2019. Cistern At Buffalo 

Bayou Park, 105 Sabine Street, Houston, TX 77007. Times:

Seniors, Youth and Students. The Cistern’s distinctive 

architecture as well as its sheer size and raw interior, 

punctuated by a series of rhythmical columns, will make for 

an intriguing and interactive experience. Visitors to Carlos 

Cruz-Diez at the Cistern: Spatial Chromointerference will be 

encouraged to wear white or light colored clothing and will 

actively participate in viewing as the color changes creating a 

sensation of movement. 

interactive temporary public sculpture Open House - Daily 

from dawn until dusk through February 28, 2019, admission 

free. Sam Houston Park, 1100 Bagby, Houston, TX 77002. The 

artistic duo, Havel Ruck Projects, made up of local artists, Dan 

Havel and Dean Ruck, transformed a previously abandoned house 

into an interactive temporary public sculpture. Sourced from 

Cherry House Moving Company, the 1940s-era house was originally 

located in Santa Fe, Texas. After moving the home to Sam Houston 

Park in April, Havel and Ruck stripped the structure’s interior and 

exterior using drill saws and other tools. They cut circular holes 

into the walls and filled them with PVC pipe to create a “Swiss 

cheese” or “lace” appearance and collaged the interior walls with 

vintage images sourced from family, friends and local resale shops 

representing the city’s people, places and past. 

Comedy Night at HPL - Monthly on the 3 rd Thursday, 6-8 

PM. Houston Public Library, 500 Mckinney Avenue, Houston, 

TX 77002. Admission is free. The Houston Public Library offers 

“Open Mic” comedy night where local and non local comedians, 

comediennes, ventriloquists and impressionists of ALL ages 

present family comedy to the audience. Improv Performers 

from Station Theater closes out the night with games that 

involve the audience. Everyone who participates in at least one 

open mic throughout the year become eligible to participate in 

the Annual Comedy competition which is held in December. 

Prizes in the amounts of $100 and $75 gift cards are given to the 

4 winners. Two adult and two youth. Event is free and open to 

the public. Food and non alcoholic beverages are allowed in the 

sitting area during this event only. You can bring your own food 

and order from many of the surrounding food places. All ages.

As we dream of crisp cold evenings, we need to remember that 

the fireplace and chimney should be serviced prior to the first 

fire of the winter. 

There’s nothing as serene as a warm, crackling fire on a cold, 

winter night. There’s also nothing more dangerous if your 

chimney is damaged. 

Broken or cracked chimneys can let heat, smoke and toxic 

gasses, such as carbon monoxide, into your home. Your home 

could even catch fire. Chimney damage is often obvious, but 

sometimes it can be hidden. Use the following checklist to help 

ensure that you can enjoy your fireplace and avoid problems 

- or even a disaster: 

• Check to see if bricks have fallen or the chimney is leaning. 

• Look for shiny areas on your exterior metal chimney pipe. This 

could mean the chimney has shifted - during the recent East 

Coast earthquake, for instance. 

• Look for cracks at joints where the chimney connects to the 

firebox, at the roofline and in the attic. 

• Check for debris that may have fallen into the fireplace. 

• Use a screwdriver to check the mortar between the bricks or 

stones. If it crumbles when you pick at it, the chimney may be 

a hazard and probably needs work. 

• When in doubt, consult a licensed engineer or contractor. For 

the name of an inspector, call your insurance carrier or your 

mortgage company. 

Remember, disasters can happen even in the best of homes. 

That’s why every home should be equipped with carbon monoxide 

and smoke detectors. Here are a few tips: 

• Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in sleeping 

areas and on every level of your home and away from air vents.

Shield Bearer Associate Director Melissa Rotholz was 

recently selected as the 2018 Woman of Excellence by 

the Women Empowering Women Express Network (WE- 

WEN) of the American Business Women’s Association 

(ABWA) and honored at the Federation of Professional 

Women (FHPW) Awards Gala. 

The mission of ABWA is to bring together businesswomen 

of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities 

for them to help themselves and others grow personally 

and professionally through leadership, education, 

networking support and national recognition. Melissa is a founding member of ABWA 

- WEWEN, has served as VP of Communications, President-elect and is currently 

President of the organization. 

The Woman of Excellence Award highlights women that have demonstrated outstanding 

leadership and mentorship within their member organization, their professions 

and the community. The mission of FHPW is to unite member organizations to enrich 

personal and professional relationships and expand leadership, partnership and 

educational opportunities. The FHPW Educational Foundation awards scholarships 

to aid and advance the education and knowledge of women in the community. 

As Associate Director of Shield Bearer, a local non-profit organization dedicated to 

hope and healing for survivors of human trafficking, crime and abuse, veterans and 

active military families, struggling marriages and many other hurting hearts, Melissa 

oversees community engagement including marketing, public relations, volunteering 

and events. She has over seventeen years of experience leading teams dedicated to 

elevating individual and organizational performance in the public, private and charitable 

sectors. Melissa feels specifically called to empower families with education 

and resources and is passionate about speaking out for those that have experienced 

traumatic events and are unable to afford services and programs. She has pioneered 

a Mother Daughter Strong program that focuses on building strength physically, 

emotionally, mentally and spiritually, created a Mentor Program for homeless women 

and community volunteers and implemented fundraising initiatives resulting in 

increased donor participation year over year. 

Melissa also currently serves as a mentor for sister ABWA league Cy-Fair Express 

Network, an Ambassador for the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce, on 

the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce Gala Fundraising Committee, on the 

Cypress Gems Chapter of the National Charity League Senior Recognition Committee 

and volunteers regularly with multiple local nonprofits. She holds a Bachelor of 

Business Administration in Marketing from Texas State University and a Master of 

Science in Organizational and Human Resource Development from Abilene Christian 

University. Her most treasured roles are wife of twenty-four years and mom to two

WEWEN Member Demethra Orion of Odyssey Limousine Services, Incorporated. 

This scholarship will be used to attend local leadership program, Leadership North 

Houston. 

Leadership North Houston (LNH) was formed in 1995 when several area Chambers of 

Commerce and the Lone Star College System partnered together to meet the need 

for a leadership program in the north Houston area. Monthly interactive sessions are 

held from October through May covering topics such as education, cultural diversity, 

economic development, health and human services and more. Participants learn 

more about the key issues facing the community, develop relationships with other 

influential leaders in the Houston area, make a difference in the future of their 

community, emerge as a leader rather than a follower and develop an increased 

knowledge of leadership styles to better serve their current organizations and communities. The program curriculum also includes a leadership skills 

enhancement component, which is designed to strengthen a participant’s foundation as a leader to achieve personal goals and contribute to the 

success of their organization. 

The selection process allows for 30 participants to be chosen from the emerging and existing leaders who apply for the program. “Our organization 

was thrilled that Demethra was selected for the program. She has been an important part of our leadership team, serving as Vice President of Programs 

and on several committees. We look forward to encouraging her throughout the year and learning from her experience in this program,” stated Melissa 

Rotholz, WEWEN President. 

CHINCH BUGS or BROWN PATCH? 

As the weather starts to cool, brown patch inevitably starts to show its ugly 

face in the form of yellow circles on our lawns. Many homeowners have a 

hard time telling whether they have brown patch or if there is some sort 

of insect feasting on their lawn areas. 

To clarify: Brownpatch is a fungus and usually appears in the same areas 

repeatedly, thriving when temperatures drop overnight below 70 degrees for 

several nights, even if previous outbreaks were thought to have been resolved. 

A yellow/grey circle up to 20” in diameter will appear and then slowly close in 

on the inner turf, changing the color of the grass as it moves inward. 

Scott’s Lawn Fungus Control is very effective in controlling an outbreak 

of Brownpatch. Products containing Chlorothanolwork well - try Daconil 

Docket DF, it is a granular product and very effective. Ortho Daconil is a 

faster-acting liquid productmany homeowners use. Additionally, as the 

weather begins to cool, mow your turf shorter to prevent moisture build-up, 

adjust your irrigation cycle to fewer days or shorter cycle times and avoid 

watering at night. Fungus loves moisture. 

Chinch Bugs can be very devastating to St. Augustine or Fescue lawns. Their 

damage can appear similar to brown patch at first but grows out beyond 

circles or rings. Chinch bugs are the larvae of Blissus leucopterus, a small 

winged beetle. To check for the presence of chinch bugs: 

Take a coffee can or similar container and remove the top and bottom of 

the can, creating a hollow cylinder. Then embed the can in an affected 

area and fill with water. If chinch bugs are present they will rise to the top 

of the water within the can. 

Prevent damage from occurring! The most effective pesticide to apply is 

a liquid spray containing permethrin, cypermethrin or deltamethrin. This 

must be applied 3 separate times within a 21 day period - the egg cycle the 

chinch bugs leave behind must be killed, otherwise they will return. A liquid 

product will permeate all areas better and more effectively than a granular 

product, ensuring the infestation is defeated. 

If a granular treatment is utilized as well as a liquid application, 

“Triazicide” works very well if applied according to labeled directions.

One month before: 

Determine your overall budget for decor and food. 

Call or email family and friends to discuss holiday plans and invite them to 

join you for the occasion. 

Three weeks before: 

Order flowers from your local florist and source the other seasonal elements 

you’d like to incorporate (pumpkins, gourds, leaves, acorns, etc.). 

Rent extra chairs or linens from your local rental company, if needed.

But before you make a single purchase, there 

are a few things we recommend you do. Remember, 

Black Friday was created by retailers 

to benefit retailers. But with our pointers 

below, you’ll be able to turn the tables and 

ensure you make the wisest buying decisions 

throughout the holiday season. 

Make a list, check it twice: One of the worst 

things you can do during the holidays is purchase 

items blindly without a shopping list. 

This is true whether you shop online or in-store. 

Shopping without a specific list causes you to 

spend more and purchase items that you may 

not necessarily need. By creating a shopping 

list with specific items, you avoid falling into 

the trap of buying unnecessary stuff. 

Embrace your inner Scrooge: So you’ve 

found what looks like the perfect deal and 

you’re ready to pull the trigger. Stop. Before 

you buy anything, there are two things you 

should always do. First, use a price-comparison

Be wary of doorbuster sales: Black Friday 

wouldn’t be the same without a head-turning 

doorbuster sale. However, these time-sensitive 

sales were designed to lure shoppers 

into stores in hopes of getting consumers to 

spend on other nonessentials. Oftentimes, a 

store will have a very limited number of doorbuster 

items in stock. Moreover, they’ll release 

them at odd hours in the morning. So unless 

you’re first in line, your chances of scoring a 

doorbuster deal are slim to none. 

Get social: Want to get a leg up on the latest 

Black Friday offerings? One of the best ways 

to see what’s coming down the pipes is by 

following your favorite retailers on social 

media. Facebook and Twitter tend to be the 

most active platforms for retailers, but don’t 

be surprised if stores start using Instagram to 

reveal secret coupon codes or early preview 

deals as well. 

Use one card: Data breaches are bound to 

happen - especially during the holidays - and 

the best way to safeguard yourself against any 

potential identity theft is to limit the number 

of credit cards you use during the holiday 

season. While you could make your purchases 

with cash only, there are many benefits to 

using a credit card, whether you’re earning

Know your return policies: Retailers tend

It’s truly become 

the Internet’s version of Black Friday. Cyber Monday began “officially” 

in 2005 (it was made up by a marketer), but the phenomenon goes back 

to the beginning of online shopping, before computers were a fixture in 

homes. People would return to work on the Monday after Thanksgiving 

and shop from their office computers. This year, more than 60 percent 

of American consumers are expected to shop online on Cyber Monday, 

although many of us will be shopping from the comfort of our living-room 

sofas. Cyber Monday has gone mobile as well, with about half of online 

shoppers expected to make holiday purchases from their smartphones or 

tablets. Of course, as the popularity of Cyber Monday grows and the deals 

get bigger and better, the risks of shopping online also increase. Cybercriminals 

love Cyber Monday too and work hard to get rich off the huge 

number of people engaging in online commerce around the holidays. To 

help shoppers stay safe and secure on Cyber Monday, here are some tips. 

Shop from a secure computer: A computer or Android phone that isn’t 

protected by antivirus software is more likely to be compromised by malware. 

Otherwise, all data entered into or transmitted from that phone or 

computer is at risk, including all forms of personally identifiable information, 

credit-card numbers and bank accounts. Be sure to keep the operating 

system and all internet-facing apps updated to the latest software versions. 

Shop using a secure connection: Data can be at risk during transit if 

an attacker controls the network or uses packet-sniffing software. Web 

protocols such as HTTPS encrypt communications, but in some advanced 

attacks even those could fall to a “man-in-the-middle” attack. Nonetheless, 

always look for the HTTPS lock symbol in your browser address window 

when performing an online purchase. 

Search for deals on retailer sites, not on search engines: Scammers 

“poison” search results with malicious or deceptive links. Want that latest 

game console? Run a search on the Best Buy, Amazon or GameStop sites 

rather than on Google. 

Use trusted vendors: Any website can be attacked by hackers, but limiting your 

shopping to established and trusted vendors limits your exposure. Bookmark the 

most trusted online retail sites to make sure you don’t get redirected to fakes. 

Don’t fall for ‘too-good-to-be-true’ deals: Cyber Monday features a lot 

of incredible, legitimate deals offered by trusted mainstream retailers. 

But cybercriminals will prey on shoppers’ desire for the lowest prices 

and will try to slip in a lot of fake deals. Watch out especially for emails, 

text messages, pop-up browser windows and Facebook and Twitter posts 

promising fantastic savings. Clicking on links in the messages or posts could 

lead to scams, phishing sites or sites distributing malware. And don’t open 

attachments in emails promising fantastic deals. 

Plan ahead and don’t be rushed: Cyberattacks take but a split second 

to occur. Sometimes all that’s required is clicking on a link in an email. 

Look for clues to malicious links, such as an extra “.cc” at the end of what 

would otherwise be a trusted domain name. Take the time to make sure 

you’re on the correct website. 

Review credit-card and bank statements regularly during the shopping 

season: Malware can infect credit-card readers in stores and unscrupulous 

cashiers often steal card numbers as well. If you find a transaction that 

doesn’t match your purchases, your account may have been compromised. 

If so, contact your bank or card issuer. 

Don’t use debit cards online: You’ve got far less protection against fraud 

on a debit card than you do with a credit card. Stick to credit cards when 

shopping online. If you absolutely must use a debit card, use the prepaid 

kind with a set spending limit. 

Use unique passwords and logon information for every site you visit: 

Yes, it’s a pain to remember all those passwords. But if one of them is 

stolen, a cybercrook will try using it on other websites. Passwords should 

be as long as possible and contain a mix of upper-and lower-case characters, 

numbers, punctuation and symbols - and they shouldn’t be reused, 

especially for any website that handles your money. If you have trouble 

handling them all, use a password manager. 

If you’re shopping from a tablet or smartphone on Cyber Monday, 

use a trusted vendor’s app, not a web browser: Vendors have more 

control over their own apps than they do over mobile browsers, which 

often don’t display the web addresses of the sites to which you’re giving 

your credit-card information. 

Never install software on your mobile device from a website link or 

code: Software from locations other than the device’s official “store,” such 

as Apple’s iTunes App Store or the Google Play Store, has a greater chance 

of being malicious. Even then, check to make sure that the app developer 

is the official retailer - a lot of Amazon-related apps in Google Play have 

no connection to Amazon.

VETERANS DAY NOVEMBER 11TH 

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually 

on November 11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons 

who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other 

holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated 

in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; 

major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour 

of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with 

Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed 

Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. 

Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or 

dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served 

their country honorably during war or peacetime. 

When Is Veterans Day? 

Veterans Day occurs on November 11 every year in the 

United States. 

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the 

name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In 1968, 

the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved 

the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. 

The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Gerald 

Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important 

historical significance of the date. 

Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate 

the veterans of World War I and World War II on or near 

November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain 

has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). 

In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is 

common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 

11.

The military men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all 

walks of life; they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors

In November, we celebrate Veterans Day for those who are actively serving, living 

Veterans or Veterans killed while serving. A little history lesson about Veterans 

Day. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary 

of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an 

annual observance and Nov. 11 th became a national holiday beginning in 1938. 

Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American Veterans living 

or dead, but especially gives thanks to living Veterans who served their country 

honorably during war or peacetime. The military men and women who serve and 

protect the United States of Amerca come from all walks of life; they are parents, 

children, grandparents, friends, neighbors and coworkers and are an important 

part of their communities. The top four most cited reasons why young men and 

women join the Armed Forces is Patriotism, life style, uniform and social status. 

Patriotism is the reason why young men and women agree to serve our country 

so they can defend our borders and not stand on the sidelines and just watch. 

The lifestyle of people in Armed Forces is challenging, adventurous, risky and 

yet envious and charming. The uniform has appealed more to the youth than 

advertisements of other careers. Social status, when you see a person in Armed 

Forces uniform you automatically give respect to him/her. This respect and love 

from the countrymen plays a major role in someone choosing it as a career. Every 

night, I sleep soundly knowing that the young men and women of the Armed 

Forces are serving our country to defend our Freedom and our Flag.

Gardening Tips For November 

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and 

humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost 

overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label 

directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the 

bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, 

add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. 

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over 

the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that 

cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. 

• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to 

the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. 

• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up 

spraying program and water deeply. 

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease 

organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit 

by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, 

cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. 

• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut 

banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. 

• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from 

freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make 

great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. 

• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in 

soil under each plant. 

• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

COLD FIGHTING 

CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP 

Yield: 4-6 servings 

Cook Time: 30 minutes 

Prep Time: 20 minutes 

Total Time: 50 minutes 

The most soothing, comforting, cozy soup for the 

flu season! Quick/easy to make, you’ll be feeling 

better in no time! 

Ingredients: 

1 tablespoon olive oil 

1 onion, diced 

3 carrots, peeled and diced 

2 stalks celery, diced 

3 cloves garlic, minced 

1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger 

1 tablespoon minced lemongrass 

1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves 

1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 

5 cups chicken stock 

2 bay leaves 

1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs 

3/4 cup uncooked ditalini pasta 

Juice of 1 lemon 

Kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste 

2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 

Directions: 

• Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large stockpot or 

Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion, carrots and 

celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 

3-4 minutes. Stir in garlic, ginger, lemongrass, thyme 

and rosemary until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. 

•Whisk in chicken stock, bay leaves and 1 cup 

water; bring to a boil. Add chicken; reduce heat 

and simmer. Cook, covered, until the chicken is 

cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Remove 

chicken and shred, using two forks; set aside. 

•Stir in pasta and cook until tender, about 

8-10 minutes. 

• Stir in chicken and lemon juice; season with 

salt and pepper, to taste. 

•Serve immediately, garnished with chives, 

if desired.

MEXICAN SOUP 

1 cup chopped onion 

1 cup chopped celery 

4 to 5 cups chicken broth 

1 can Ro-Tel tomatoes 

1 can stewed tomatoes 

2 to 3 cups diced chicken 

2½ lb. Velveeta cheese 

2 cups cooked rice 

salt & pepper 

1 Tbsp. garlic powder 

Chili pepper seasoning to taste (optional) 

SANTA FE SOUP 

2 lbs ground beef/ground turkey 

1 medium onion diced 

1 small can green 

2 cans shoepeg corn 

1 can kidney beans 

1 can pinto beans 

1 can black beans 

1 can rotel tomatoes 

1 can diced tomatoes 

2 pkg taco seasoning 

2 pkg ranch dressing 

2 cups water (Chicken Stock/Beef Stock) 

Saute onion and celery; combine 

with chicken broth, stewed tomatoes, 

and Ro-Tel tomatoes. Add 

diced chicken along with Velveeta 

cheese; stir well. Add cooked rice; 

season to taste with salt and pepper. 

Add remaining seasonings. 

Simmer for 45 minutes. Serve with 

corn bread. 

Brown ground beef with onion 

in pot to be used for soup. Drain 

grease. Empty all undrained cans 

of ingredients into the pot with the 

beef, add taco seasoning, ranch 

dressing and enough water to 

make a soup consistency. It is optional 

to add cilantro to taste at 

this point. allow to simmer approximately 

30 minutes and serve with 

sour cream and cheese.
