We all know that freedom isn’t free, but how many of
us pay attention to the basic ins and outs of the military
life? Probably not many. November is Military
Family Appreciation Month and is the perfect time to partake
in The 1940s Radio
Hour at the Delray
Beach Playhouse.
The show is a play
with music by
Walton Jones and
is an endearing
exercise in nostalgia
that takes place
on the night of December
21, 1942 in
a seedy little New York radio
station (WOV). The United States
is at war and the station’s crew is rehearsing
and preparing a final holiday show that will be recorded for
broadcast to the troops overseas. Adding an air of poignancy
to the night’s program, the show’s young trumpeter has just
joined the Army and will be shipping out tomorrow. Everybody
at the station wants this holiday broadcast to be special,
so they’ve pulled together their best singers to perform. Take
a sentimental musical journey back to December of 1942, as
you experience this “live” radio broadcast from the Hotel Astor’s
Algonquin Room! The show is held from Friday, November
30 to Sunday, December 16 with various times. Visit www.
delraybeachplayhouse.com or call (561) 272-1281 for more
information and tickets.
Go vegan or go home. Well, not really, but we can all afford
to eat a little less meat on the regular. The Earth
will thank you, and so will your local pigs and cows
(and hips). November is Vegan Month and is a wonderful
time to just take a step back and focus on what you’re putting
on your fork and into your mouth. If you’re not sure how you
can omit animal protein from your diet, lucky you because
you’ve got The New Vegan restaurant that can show you the
ropes. At The New Vegan, they try to ensure nutritional value
without having to compromise between taste and health.
They have a variety of 100 percent plant-based meals with
a combination of raw, cooked, baked and grilled food. They
are committed to a non-GMO, non-dairy, non-wheat, non-soy
and non-gluten kitchen, so you know that their heart (and
Earth-conscious stomach) are in the right place. Stop by and
enjoy the portabella or shiitake mushroom burger with dehydrated
mushrooms, chickpeas, fajita and garlic for $16, or
the Palm Toona wrap with hearts of palm mixed with sweet
peppers, fennel, almonds and celery with lettuce and pico de
gallo stuffed in a millet spinach wrap for $14. You are guaranteed
to feel full without being stuffed, and happy without
eating meat, which is a win, win, win for your stomach, the
environment and a local business. The New Vegan is located
at 528 N.E. Second St. Visit www.thenewvegan.com or call
(561) 404-5301 for more information.
