Ettenborough and Currier agreed that the community faces three options: maintain the status quo, which looks like it will become too expensive to sustain; go to a full pay-as-you-throw program where residents can use only purchased trash bags; create a hybrid of the current collection system with some payas-you-throw components. Currier believes the hybrid system, which currently lacks a catchy name, is the most likely option for the city. But even this option will require significant changes in the way residents dispose of their trash. The premise behind the pay-asyou-throw system is that residents will decide they can spend less money on their trash if they buy fewer bags. That means they have to find other ways to dispose of trash. The city of Sanford, ME, which began its pay-as-you-throw system in 2013, told residents that its system encourages more recycling, Continued from page 1 special skill to help raise money. To reduce the need for bags, Currier said residents will be encouraged to compost as much of their organic material. He said studies show that about 45 percent of all household wastes can be composted, including an estimated 375 tons annually of dog waste. Even before the city launches its new program, residents can have their organic waste carted away by subscribing with a Gloucester company, Black Earth, which provides weekly pickups for households and businesses on the North Shore. A subscription for the pickup service costs $10 a month or $100 a year. Residential organic materials is placed in a 13-gallon bin, which is leased for $24. Currier said Newburyport in reducing trash “would be doing the right thing.” He admits it will take a lot of education to change the behavior of residents who are accustomed to rolling out their regular trash weekly and recycling waste every other week. The changes start in the kitchen, where instead of having two trash containers under the sink, households will have three. Jim Kelcourse, R- Amesbury, who nominated McCarthy and Keene for the state legislative awards, secured a $15,000 appropriation for Pelican in the state budget to combat the disease of addiction. Kelcourse also ran in his first Boston Marathon this year in support of Pelican’s mission. Cohen’s sobriety date is Aug. 2, 2016. “My journey began in April 2016. I was lost, discouraged and felt completely broken. The Pelican Intervention Fund enabled me to go to a safe place away from all the distractions back at home. For the next three months I was at the Brook Retreat in Plympton. Those three months changed my life forever,” he wrote. He attributes his success to following the 12-step program to recovery. When he reached the fourth step, the counselors helped him face the root causes of his anger that fueled his addiction. Instead of the 10 or 15 names he expected to list, he wrote down 150 individuals and organizations that he felt had wronged him. When he looked at the list, he realized it was less them and more him that had caused his pain and rage. His core issues involved a troubled childhood, being shuttled around an alcoholic family and being sent to a military school at 11 years old. issues,” he said. “Through writing and working the 12 steps of recovery I was able to deal with and let go of those core issues.” The Linx House, which was one of the names on his list, welcomed him back and invited him to work with other addicts. Cohen and a friend, John, took powerlifting to the competitive level. Last year, Cohen lifted a total of 1,350 pounds combined in a squat, bench press and dead lift. His goal this year is 1,500 pounds “assuming my back holds up,” he said. He admits he is no match for his friend, John, a recovering alcoholic, who can bench press 530 pounds. “We are blessed guys,” Cohen said.
