ABOUT <strong>BOCAS</strong><br />
Bocas del Toro, es un pequeño paraíso insular situado en el mar Caribe al<br />
norte de Panamá. El archipiélago, compuesto de nueve islas principalmente,<br />
es un destino turístico que no se puede perder.<br />
Descubierto en 1502 por Cristóbal Colón, Bocas fue una base de reparación<br />
y de abastecimiento para los barcos en tránsito, tanto los comerciantes<br />
marítimos como para los piratas europeos. En 1800 llega la compañía<br />
United Fruit Banana Plantaciones, y la isla empezó a desarrolarse y a<br />
properar.<br />
Fundada en 1826, la ciudad principal Bocas Town se hace la tercera ciudad<br />
más grande del país. De hecho es el proveedor principal de Plátanos<br />
sobre todo en Panamá.La ciudad no deja de crecer y esta en 1920. Llegan<br />
numerosas plagas en las plantaciones del banano, parando su producción y<br />
exportación, y la isla qued a en el olvido. En 1988, el parque marino<br />
de Bastimentos, se hace la primera reserva natural protegida en Panamá.<br />
Desde los años 90 el turismo se empieza a desarrollar, y las numerosas<br />
comunidades se integran en estas islas.<br />
Entre los indígenas autóctonos, los descendientes de esclavos jamaicanos<br />
y colonos; y actualmente los nuevos migrantes venidos del mundo entero;<br />
Bocas es un microcosmos que reagrupa hoy más de una decena de lenguas.<br />
Entre español, los idiomas indígenas, el guari-guari o patuá (el idioma<br />
de los descendientes jamaicanos), el inglés, francés, el alemán,<br />
italiano...<br />
Las islas principales a descubrir son: Isla Colón, Carenero, Bastimentos,<br />
Solarte, San Cristóbal y Popa. El archipiélago es un destino sensibilizado<br />
por el eco turismo y especializado en las actividades acuáticas, en<br />
el descubrimiento de la fauna y la flora de la selva húmeda de América<br />
central, y permite encontrar las culturas locales aborígenes.<br />
A small island paradise located in the Caribbean Sea in northeastern<br />
Panama. The archipelago, composed of nine main islands is « The » tourist<br />
destination not to be missed. Discovered in 1502 by Christopher Columbus,<br />
Bocas quickly became a base of repair and supply for boats in transit,<br />
from maritime traders to European pirates.<br />
It was in 1800, when United Fruit Banana Plantations arrived, that the<br />
island began to grow and prosper.<br />
Founded in 1826, the main city Bocas Town (located on Isla Colon)<br />
becomes the third largest city in the country. Becoming one of the main<br />
suppliers of Bananas all over Panama, the city continued to grow until<br />
1920. After many epidemics, banana production stops and the island went<br />
back to oblivion.<br />
In 1988, the Bastimentos Marine Park became the first protected nature<br />
reserve in Panama.Since the 1990s tourism has developed and many<br />
communities have found themselves living together on these islands.<br />
Between Native Indians, descendants of Jamaican, descendants of settlers<br />
and expatriates from all over the world, the island of Bocas is a microcosm<br />
that today encompasses more than a dozen languages. The main islands to<br />
discover are: Isla Colon, Carenero, Bastimentos, Solarte, San Cristobal<br />
and Popa.<br />
The archipelago is a destination for eco tourism and specializes in aquatic<br />
activities, in the discovery of the fauna and the flora of the jungle of<br />

Bocas is one of the most tourist friendly sites of Panama. It is an<br />

Cayo zapatilla<br />
Son consideradas como las islas más bellas del archipiélago. La vista desde<br />
el cielo de esos dos cayos parece una huella, de ahí proviene su nombre.<br />
Los cayos son pequeños y se puede dar toda la vuelta caminando en tan solo 45<br />
min. Podrá disfrutar de unas hermosas playas de arena blanca donde relajarse,<br />
de unos arrecifes fabulosos y, según la temporada, ver el nacimiento de tres<br />
tipos de tortugas marinas en extinción: baula, verde y carey.Considered one of<br />

Dolfin bay<br />
Red Frog beach<br />
Ubicada en la isla de Bastimentos, Red Frog (Rana Roja) toma su nombre<br />
de ese pequeño anfibio venenoso; ya que su hábitat es la selva que bordea<br />
la playa. No tiene nada que temer mientras no la toque. La playa de arena<br />
blanca es espectacular y es también apreciada por los surfistas debido a<br />
sus excelentes olas. Para llegar a la playa deberán cruzar una zona privada y<br />
por lo tanto abonar un derecho de entrada. Hay restaurantes en la playa.<br />
Located on the island of Bastimentos, Red Frog (« Rana Roja ») is named<br />
after a small venomous anphibian of the same moniker. If you happen to see<br />
one, don’t worry ! If you don’t touch it, then it won’t hurt you. Either<br />
way, don’t let that keep you from experiencing the spectacular white sand<br />
beach and waves only a surfur could appreciate. There is a small fee for<br />
beach access, which is connected to a private park. There is also on-site<br />
catering for your post-surf meal break or a leisurely lunch by the sea.<br />

Playa Estrella<br />
Se refiere a menudo a esta playa como la más linda del archipiélago.<br />
Playa de las Estrellas con sus aguas tranquilas y cristalinas es la<br />

most suitable for children. Named Playa Estrella for its abundance of<br />
red starfish, they are now on the verge of extinction because tourists<br />
take them out of the water for photos and selfies, without realizing<br />
that they die out of water! You can get there via taxi or bus,which<br />
you take until reaching Boca del Drago, then boat taxi (5mn) or walk<br />
(20mn). Local restaurants offer dining on the beach, with well-priced<br />
lobster or grilled fish.<br />

Playa Bluff<br />
Ubicada entre mar y selva, esta hermosa playa dearena<br />
dorada se extiende 5 km. Sus olas las convierten en<br />
unos de los lugares favoritos para los surfistas, tanto<br />
aficionados como profesionales. También es un área<br />
protegida para la nidación de las tortugas marinas en<br />
extinción, así que procure no molestarlas ni crear<br />
impacto humano no deseado. Para llegar puede tomar<br />
un Minibús cada hora desde el parque de Bocas.Located<br />
between the jungle & the sea, this golden beach offers<br />
beautiful waves, which make it the ideal surf spot for<br />
both amateurs and professionals. This spot is also a<br />
protected nesting place mating sea turtles, so please<br />
be careful not to disturb them. There is catering and<br />
the hotels are on site. The minibus leaves every hour<br />
from the Bocas Town Park.<br />
Isla pajaros<br />
Esa islote perdido en el medio del mar, parece sacada de una película<br />
de Peter Pan. Verdadero paraíso para los ornitólogos donde podrán<br />
observar centenares de aves marinas.This rock, lost in the middle<br />
of the water seems straight out of a Peter Pan film. A true paradise<br />
for ornithologists, you will be able to observe hundreds of<br />
sea birds.<br />
Mimitimbi<br />
Pequeña comunidad indígena ubicada al lado del rio Mimitimbi, a 25<br />
min del pueblo de Bocas. Descubrirá hermosas playas aisladas del<br />
público donde podrán conocer un pueblo indígena.<br />
A small indigenous community located next to the Mimitimbi river,<br />

NESBITT AND HIS RHYTHM MAKERS (3)<br />
La histórica fotografía de “Nesbitt and His Rhythm Makers”, nos hace<br />
reflexionar sobre los variados ritmos que impregnaron a Bocas del Toro<br />
durante su época dorada. En 1921, The Star & Herald reportó el programa<br />
musical ejecutado por “The Excelsior Orchestra” dirigida por A.A Haynes<br />
durante un evento en el Parque Bolivar. La banda ejecutó marchas, valses,<br />
pasillos, pero también un rag de nombre “anytime anyday anywhere”.<br />
En 1934, época más cercana a la banda de “Maga Man Nesbitt”, el mismo<br />
diario reporta las exitosas fiestas de Jazz de “Claude Layne and His Hot<br />
6”, tanto en Bocas Town como en Almirante.<br />
Estos antecedentes, sumados a los instrumentos visibles en la fotografía<br />
donde figura el saxofón tenor, percusión, trompeta, las maracas y<br />
el magnífico banjo, nos hacen presumir de lo ecléctico de su potencial<br />
repertorio. Seguimos investigando y redescubriendo a “Nesbitt and His<br />
Rhythm Makers”.<br />

us think about the varied paces that they impregnated to Bocas during<br />
its golden epoch. In 1921, The Star and Herald brought(reported) the<br />
