homerhorizon.com life & arts the Homer Horizon | November 8, 2018 | 17 LTHS fall play ‘unlike anything’ done before ‘All in the Timing’ features seven scenes with nothing in common Jacquelyn Schlabach Assistant Editor This year’s fall play at Lockport Township High School is different from all the other productions it performs each year. The shows typically follow a specific plot throughout the performance, but “All in the Timing” is the exception. It features seven scenes that have nothing in common but one thing: time. LTHS students performed “All in the Timing” written by David Ives Thursday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 4, at the school’s East Campus auditorium. Two different casts each performed for two of the four days to accommodate the more than 80 students that auditioned, with only 36 making the cut. “It’s very unlike anything we’ve ever done before, and it’s super weird, which I think helps us explore a different kind of character, which is nice because it’s a little out of our comfort zone, in my opinion,” said senior Olivia Kuncis, who played Hazel in the scene “Seven Menus.” According to co-directors and LTHS teachers Laura Gilbert and Kennedy Musich, for some of the characters in the scenes, a vague description is given of who they are, leaving room for interpretation. “There’s the idea of wanting some of that natural, organic character to come out, so bringing a little bit of themselves into the character,” Musich said. “I mean they do have direction, they do have some idea of what their characters are, but one of our scenes literally says the character’s name is Mark, early 30s; that’s all the information they have about him. So they have to build that background of their character.” Kuncis added that it’s a lot of trial and error to channel the character that each actor portrays. “Eventually, it kind of just clicks, especially when you’re working with your scene partners, and you’re feeding off of each other,” she said. “It just kind of feels right, and you know that this is what your character is supposed to be, and it’s a lot of work from Dr. Gilbert and Ms. Musich.” Senior Rachel Hampton, who played Allie in the scene “Philadelphia,” said that because of those vague descriptions and interpretations of who a character is, it brings out the “weirdness and obscurity” of the show. “We kind of have to come up with ways to embody our own characters,” she said. “We can’t go and watch other performances of it. We have to really dive into ourselves and find our own character.” The almost two-hour show explored the concept of time all in different contexts. For example, in the first scene, “Sure Thing,” the male character, Bill, tries to catch a date with a girl named Betty in a coffee shop, but every time he says the wrong thing that she doesn’t like, a bell goes off, and he has to start the scene again. This shows the audience that it’s all about being in the right place at the right time to fall in love. Photos by Jacquelyn Schlabach/22nd Century Media “So it messes with time, the order of things, but it still has funny and heartfelt moments,” Gilbert said. Another scene called “Time Flies” explores what two mayflies do to cherish the time they have together after learning they only have one day to live. Gilbert said that her and Musich were looking for a play of this structure, adding that “All in the Timing” is a popular high school show. Gilbert co-directed half of the scenes, while Musich directed the other half. “As we started reading the scenes, we started to realize how funny they were and how well-written they were, so it just grew on us,” Gilbert said. However, Ives put his own twist on it. “I don’t know if [Ives] would agree, but it’s almost like a satire on an existential outlook,” Gilbert said.
