KARACHI: Former
president Asif Ali Zardari
says he is observing that
‘some people’ are hatching
a conspiracy against him. Accountability
Addressing his party
workers in Nawabshah, the
PPP’s co-chairperson said
he would remain firm and
face all the plots being
designed against him.
He claimed that if disbursing
jobs among the
masses was his mistake, he
would continue doing so.
The PPP leader was of
Bureau
(NAB).
‘Look at the surging
rate of dollar and recall
where it was actually
before,” Zardari said while
hitting out at the government.
The PPP chairperson
has been expressing concerns
over his unfair treatment
which he described
instructed all commercial
banks to ensure the security
of all payment cards in the
country and monitor usage
of their cards, especially
international transactions.
However, when
PakCERT investigated the
cyber attack, it emerged that
data of almost 20,000 debit
cards was compromised—
this may also explain the
messages some of you have
received from your banks
recently, informing your
card has been blocked for
international transactions
Zardari smells conspiracy against him
as persecution. In his
presser a week ago,
Zardari claimed that he
was being “attacked from
all sides” and his friends
were being arrested.
“I am being attacked
from all sides and now I’ve
realized that the quarrel
Karachi to become the world’s third most populated city by 2030
Its population is expected to grow by more than 30%
KARACHI: Karachi is
on the verge of becoming
the world’s third most populated
city by 2030.
A study by Londonbased
global market
research firm, Euromonitor,
has made the prediction.
The population of the
port city is expected to grow
by more than 30%, the second
highest growth rate,
between 2017 and 2030,
Euromonitor revealed in a
study. The firm overviewed
the current economic and
demographic state of 33
megacities of the world.
The research firm defines
megacities as those with a
population of 10 million or
more, featuring the most
affluent households and
those which are often the
primary destination for
KARACHI: People face inconvenience as the roads are blocked leading to Empress
Market during anti-encroachment operation conducted by Karachi Metropolitan
Corporation (KMC) in Empress Market.
investment in a country.
According to the report,
only 15% people used to live
in cities in 1900, but the
number rose dramatically by
2008 when more than half of
the world’s population
moved to urban areas.
The report forecasts that
60% of the world’s population
will live in urban areas
by 2030. This is because
megacities offer wealth,
social diversity, economic
growth, and innovation.
They attract people from
smaller cities and rural areas
who are in search of jobs,
want to start a business or
get a quality education.
Megacities in developing
countries, such as Pakistan
and Bangladesh, will continue
to maintain their high levels
of growth through 2030
owing to strong population
growth, significant investment
and rising incomes.
However, the report also
says if these cities want sustainable
growth, they will
need to overcome hurdles
associated with urban
growth. These include traffic
congestion, income inequality,
air pollution, crime,
affordability and slum generation.
When it comes to megacities
of developing countries
like Pakistan, the hurdles to
sustainable growth are far
too many. This means that a
city like Karachi will need to
ensure access to public
amenities, clean water supply,
electricity, education,
and jobs, the report says.
Karachi is projected to
have second highest population
growth rate through to
2030, but it remains at number
9 in terms of growth in
the real GDP—a distant
south of Dhaka, which
remains on top.
Communist Party of
Pakistan has said the forces
which held violent protests
after Supreme Court verdict
in Aisha Bibi case paralyzing
whole country for
3 days were culmination of
state policies. In a statement
issued after meeting
of politburo of CPP held at
Nasim Nagar here
Tuesday, CPP has said state
policies and strategies
especially framed at end of
70s and start of 80s have
turned to such a situation
that cities of millions were
paralyzed by few hundreds.
This was stated by
Communist Party of
Pakistan briefing media
after politburo meeting. He
said sit-ins against civil
governments reluctant to
also speeches with sarcastic
CONTROVERSIES, truths and lies surround
the issues related to oil in Pakistan, as is the
situation elsewhere in some other oil producing
and exporting countries including and especially
in the Muslim world. A former oil minister
was under trial on charges of financial corruption
too in Pakistan.
REVOLUTIONS and overthrow of regimes has
taken place on oil issue: It's said that foreign companies
who have technological know-how and
expertise take wrong advantage of wealth of
nations deprived by foreign installed governments
in their war on human and natural resources of
leaders and masses here and there around the
world, especially the oil rich Muslim blocs run as if
by chief executives of some commercial enterprise,
cartels or big business corporations.
BADIN crude, though of high quality and low in
sulphur, has limitations for refining as it contains
high percentage of wax and has to be mixed with
imported crude oil. This has resulted in surplus
Badin crude, to the level of 9,000-10,000 bpd,
which was exported until 2005. Export of crude oil
has emerged again since June 2014 as the government
has allowed petroleum producers to ship surplus
quantities to foreign buyers in the wake of
availability of large quantities of ultra-light crude
oil (condensate, coming out of gas-fields) that is
difficult to process in most of local refineries.
Resultantly, crude oil has now a significant share in
Pakistan’s exports of the petroleum group amounting
to $ 586 million in 2014-15.
PRODUCTION of oil placed Pakistan on global
ranking of 42nd among 98 oil-producing countries.
From 10,000 bpd in 1980s, crude oil production
increased to 60,000 bpd in 1990s, but remained
static until the 2,000s. It was only in 2013 that oil
production jumped to 80,800 bpd, having achieved
For a city of more than 20 million people, Delhi
has a troubling dearth of decent parks. In fact,
there may not be more than a handful. The neighbourhood
parks enjoy some bustle in the mornings
when people can be seen going about their morning
walks, quite a few still attached to their smartphones.
The pace is leisurely, few break a sweat, and the parks
are deserted for the rest of the day.
Some blame the weather or the air's (un)cleanliness
for not providing the right incentives to play a sport. But
it would still be fairer to point the finger at the laid-back
attitude of the urban Indian.
In contrast, the average urban Westerner has a
pathological interest in sports of all kinds. The British
swear by football, New Yorkers can't stop obsessing
about baseball and the average Aussie considers sports
a part of life.
But some concerns have been expressed about too
much running in the recent past. Some have even been
discussing whether "too much exercise" could be bad
for the heart. There are reports of sudden deaths among
elite marathoners. A higher incidence of atrial fibrillation
and coronary artery calcification have also been
reported in endurance athletes.
There is also concern over fibrosis being present in
the hearts of ultra-runners who have dropped dead.
Fibrosis in the heart can be =a trigger for lethal
arrhythmias that precipitate sudden cardiac death.
Intriguingly, Pheidippides - the man who ran the first
marathon in antiquity - collapsed soon after delivering
his message. It should be noted that he was supposed
to be a trained runner.
Two studies - British and Dutch - examined the coronary
arteries of long-distance cyclists and runners in CT
scans. Both concluded last year that there were more
blocks and greater calcification in the arteries of elite
athletes than people who did not run or ran a little. On
further examination, the researchers observed that
although there were more plaques in the coronary arteries
of athletes, the plaques by themselves were stable.
A stable plaque is dense with a thick cap, and it
prevents the plaque from bursting within the artery
lumen. The unstable plaque seen more often in sedentary
people is soft and full of fatty material. Its cap is
thin and fragile, waiting to burst. And once burst, it
rapidly triggers clot formation within the artery's
lumen. It is this clot that produces acute coronary syndrome.
There is a full-blown heart attack if the clot
blocks the coronary artery completely, or an unstable
angina if the block is partial.
The researchers have speculated that despite having
more plaques and calcification, elite athletes are at little
risk because the plaques are stable. Currently, there is no
Where is heavy load of oil
and cash going even today?
OPINION
a high of 98,000 bpd in November 2014. Crude oil
production registered 91,000 bpd in May 2015 and
93,000 bpd in June 2015.
PITIFULLY, Pakistan's share in total consumption
of oil was about 10% until 1980s. Where does
that other heavy load of oil goes? It needs a probe.
It's said that foreign oil companies give a paltry single
digit percentage to government and reaps most
of the other financial and non financial rewards.
One reason is that foreign companies have some
know how, equipment and technology they won't
give, except one way terms not favorable to
Pakistan. If properly held accountable, Pakistan
can save on double digit billions in oil import, satisfy
domestic demands from internal oil production,
and even export surplus oil to other countries.
Present indigenous oil meets about 23% of total
national demand of the oil refineries in the country.
An integrated network of pipeline exists for transportation
of indigenous crude oil to the refineries.
Indeed, the availability of indigenous crude oil
expands the opportunity to meet growing demand
of oil and to reduce Pakistan's dependence on
imports, but it is imperative for the government to
accord high priority to developing the sector expeditiously.
It may be advisable for the government to
revisit the Petroleum Exploration & Production
Policy in vogue, since discoveries are correlated
with drilling efforts.
Question that arises since many decades past
up to now: Where is heavy load of oil and cash
going? Iranians demonstrated and toppled their
imperial majesty on issues that included oil and
revenue and its exploitation by foreign companies.
Same is the situation in many Arab nations
in Middle East and Gulf countries. Answers to
this question are expected by many nations from
respective rulers!
Go ahead, extra exercise
and running won't kill you
Some form of exercise is better than no exercise at all; there
is an incremental benefit as fitness levels improve
explanation as to why there are more plaques in people
who have been running or cycling long distance for
years. A lot of people were relieved after the two papers
were published.
The debate about whether exercising too much can
be detrimental continues. Some believe that after a certain
point, exercise is no longer healthy and may in fact
increase mortality. Others believe that the effect of exercise
plateaus after an upper limit: exercising beyond this
point will not enhance positive effects. It should not be
forgotten that exercise is known to reduce risk of heart
disease, hypertension, diabetes and even cancer.
Most, if not all, data on the efficacy of exercise relies
on personal observations and questionnaires. Personal
documentation can be prone to bias. Many studies also
include too few patients who are followed up with for
short periods to arrive at conclusions on the effects of
increasing exercise intensity on mortality.
More recently, in October, a large study from the US
that included more than 120,000 people was published.
The median age was 53 years and the follow-up period
was over eight years. The participants were divided into
five groups depending on how they performed on the
treadmill. The fitness levels were assessed using MET
(metabolic equivalents of task) scores achieved on the
treadmill. As a result, we have more objective data.
However, the trial was retrospective and not randomised.
One MET is energy used when sitting by 40-
year-old man weighing 70 kg. It is worth 3.5ml/min/kg
of oxygen consumed. So if you are sitting and reading
this article, you are at one MET. It will go up when you
exercise. The greater the intensity of your exercise, the
higher the MET you achieve. On the treadmill test, you
go up to 5 MET in stage 1, 7 MET in stage 2 and to 9
MET in stage 3.
The five groups were: Elite; High level of cardiorespiratory
fitness; Above average fitness; Below average
fitness; and Low level of cardiorespiratory fitness. The
researchers recorded that mortality was the lowest
among elite participants - 80 per cent lower, in fact, than
the 'low fitness' group. When compared to the high fitness
group, elite fitness participants still had lower mortality
by 23 per cent. The researchers concluded that
extreme aerobic fitness was associated with the least
mortality.
The benefits of increasing aerobic cardiorespiratory
fitness were substantial even after adjusting for
basal risk factors. There was no evidence of a plateau
effect, etc.
The message: 'if you can get your cardiorespiratory
fitness to an elite level, do so'. Even high or above average
fitness levels will do because they have an effect on
your lifespan. Any level of exercise is better than no
exercise, but there is an incremental benefit as fitness
levels increase.
MELBOURNE: One of
the most senior judges in
Victoria has labelled the
and "skewed".
The County Court Chief
Judge, Peter Kidd, says current
media reporting gives
an inaccurate portrayal of
how much crime before the
the African community and
the public needs to be
"The media choose to
That creates an impression
that we, that our work, a
warned unfair criticism
could undermine public
confidence in the courts.
"Criticising the courts is
part of the democratic
process. I welcome
informed criticism," he
said.
"That's dangerous
because that undermines
their confidence in the justice
system. That's our concern.
It's an attack effectively
upon the rule of law.
"The law accepts that
young people sometimes
engage in immature and
rash decisions," he said.
"We also know that with
young people, that they're
great vehicles for reform.
An 18-year-old or 19-yearold
has the real capacity to
turn his or her life around.
So the law says, 'Look, we
need to seize that opportunity'."
Tim Hansen, commander
of Melbourne's North
West Metro Region,
described the past few
months in Melbourne as
having elements of "moral
panic".
"We're seeing headlines
and reporting that exacerbates
the problem.
Reporting on things that
we're not necessarily seeing,"
he told Four Corners.
angst and people are seeing
African crime everywhere,
which is not necessarily
the case."
UK, Canada say urgent need to resolve Khashoggi murder
British premiere and her Canadian counterpart agree on transparent investigation
LONDON: Britain and Canada
said Monday that establishing what
happened to murdered Saudi journalist
Jamal Khashoggi remains an
“urgent need”.
In a phone call, UK Prime Minister
Theresa May and her Canadian counterpart
Justin Trudeau discussed Saudi
Arabia and the “appalling” murder of
Khashoggi, agreeing there was an
urgent need to establish what happened
and for those responsible to be held to
account, said a statement from
Downing Street.
Khashoggi, a Saudi national and
columnist for The Washington Post,
disappeared on Oct. 2 after entering the
Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to receive
paperwork he needed to get married.
Once inside, he was immediately
strangled and then dismembered,
according to the Istanbul Prosecutor’s
office.
The British government’s statement
said May and Trudeau also agreed that
the international community should
continue to press for a “thorough, credible
and transparent investigation by
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”.
After days of denying any knowledge
of Khashoggi’s whereabouts,
Saudi Arabian officials said he died in
a “brawl” in the consulate but later
admitted that he was killed there.
May and Trudeau also discussed
Yemen and agreed on the pressing
need to alleviate the humanitarian situation
and reach a political solution.
“We supported the U.S. call for
de-escalation in Yemen, noting that it
must be underpinned by a political
deal between the conflict parties,”
said May.
Gulf crisis harms
regional stability:
Qatar’s emir
DOHA: Qatar’s emir
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad
Al Thani said Tuesday that
deterioration in Gulf ties
was hindering efforts to
resolve regional problems.
“The deteriorating
Gulf relations are weakening
our ability to solve
regional problems,” he
said in a speech to the
country’s Shura Council.
“The security and stability
of the Gulf and Arab
countries will not be
achieved by prejudicing
their sovereignty,” he
said.
UNITED NATIONS:
More than 200 mass
graves containing the
remains of thousands of
victims have been discovered
in areas formerly controlled
by Daesh terrorist
group in Iraq, according to
a UN report on Tuesday.
"The UN Assistance
Mission for Iraq (UNAMI)
and the UN Human Rights
Office have documented
the existence of 202 mass
grave sites in the governorates
of Ninewa,
Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and
Anbar in the northern and
western parts of the country
– but there may be
many more," the report
said.
there. In the Senate, most
of the seats that are up for
election are Democratic,
making more difficult their
task of taking additional
seats in the chamber, where
Republicans hold a razor
thin 51-49 majority.
Should Democrats take
either chamber, Trump’s
already complicated ability
to drive policy would face
further obstacles as
Democrats oppose him
uniformly on all of his
major goals, from immigration
to efforts to eliminate
the U.S.'s universal
healthcare law.
Beyond national politics,
state and local elections
will see voters decide
on a host of smaller
“down-ballot” races that
include 36 state gubernatorial
races.
Taliban kill 20
Afghan troops
near Iran border
FARAH: At least 20
Afghan soldiers have been
killed in an attack by Taliban
militants against an outpost
in Afghanistan’s western
Farah Province.
Local officials said the
militants attacked the border
post — manned by nearly
50 Afghan government soldiers
— at the early hours of
Tuesday.
A senior military officer,
who spoke on the condition
of anonymity, said at least
20 troops were confirmed to
have been killed, several
had been injured, and the
others were missing.
“Hours after the attack,
we lost contact with the base
and we still do not know the
whereabouts of the remaining
soldiers,” the officer
added.
The Taliban took responsibility
for the assault,
claiming that it had taken
control of the base, killed 30
soldiers, and captured
weapons and ammunition.
Farah, which borders
Iran, has gained more significance
for Taliban as the
government plans to build a
multi-billion-dollar pipeline
in the province.
ANKARA: Turkish
President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan on Tuesday said
U.S. sanctions on Iran
were "not right".
Following a parliamentary
group meeting,
Erdogan told reporters:
"We do not find the sanctions
right. Because our
opinion is that these sanctions
aim at destroying the
world's balance," said
Erdogan.
Erdogan stressed that
the U.S. sanctions on Iran
contradict with the international
law and diplomacy.
"We don't want to live
in an imperialist world," he
added.
Washington announced
new sanctions on Monday
targeting Iran's energy and
financial sectors along
with its shipping industry.
More than 700 individuals,
entities, aircraft, and
vessels were blacklisted,
including 50 Iranian banks
and their domestic and foreign
subsidiaries.
a cryptic message on
flatly denied it was going to
US sanctions on Iran 'wrong':
Turkish President Erdogan
Recep Tayyip Erdogan says they don't want
to live in an imperialist world
The U.S. government
granted China, Greece,
India, Turkey, Italy, Japan,
South Korea and Taiwan a
180-day waiver for importing
Iranian oil, which
eased worries of supply
reduction in the global
markets after the sanctions
went into effect.
Erdogan also criticized
the U.S. patrols which
began in northeastern
Syria on Monday.
"It is impossible that we
accept these [patrols].
Furthermore, such a situation
would lead to serious
negativity along the borders,"
said Erdogan.
The patrols come after
the Turkish military
shelled several PKK/YPG
positions in the region last
week. The YPG is the
Syrian branch of the PKK
terror group.
Pentagon: Most troops sent to border will not be armed
WASHINGTON : Most
of the 7,000 troops being
deployed to the U.S. border
with Mexico will not
be armed, the Pentagon
said Monday.
"The only soldiers that
are going to be armed during
this mission are the
soldiers that are providing
force protection," said Col.
Rob Manning, a Pentagon
spokesman, echoing a
statement by the
Department of Defense
that only “military police”
who will be protecting the
troops will be carrying
weapons.
Manning’s
But self-defense is an inherent right of a soldier, Pentagon says
statement
came in response to comments
by Air Force Gen.
Terrence O’Shaughnessy
that some of the troops
being sent to the border
will be armed.
It also follows remarks
last week by U.S.
President Donald Trump,
who said that any rocks
thrown by asylum-seeking
migrants at the U.S. military
would be "considered
a firearm".
He later attempted to
clarify his comments,
however.
"If our soldiers or
Border Patrol or ICE are
going to be hit in the face
with rocks, we're going to
arrest those people. That
doesn't mean shoot them.
But we're going to arrest
those people quickly and
for a long time," he told
reporters.
The Pentagon's statement
is also aimed at dispelling
the notion that the
troops will be involved in
law enforcement, but will
rather be working on projects
focused on "hardening"
the border.
These include putting
up more fences, creating
temporary vehicle barriers
and operating heavy
machinery.
UN: Over 200 mass graves of Daesh victims found in Iraq
According to UN report, Daesh terror group seized large areas of Iraq between June 2014 and Dec. 2017
It said it was difficult to
determine the total number
of people in these graves,
adding: "The smallest site,
in west Mosul, contained
eight bodies while the
biggest is believed to be
the Khasfa sinkhole south
of Mosul which may contain
thousands."
Between June 2014 and
Dec. 2017, the report said,
Daesh seized large areas of
Iraq and led “a campaign
of widespread violence
and systematic violations
of international human
rights and humanitarian
law – acts that may amount
to war crimes, crimes
against humanity, and possible
genocide."

South Korea, Japan say to
resume Iranian oil imports
SEOUL’ South Korea
and Japan are preparing to
resume imports of crude oil
and condensate from Iran
after a temporary halt, the
two countries announced on
Tuesday. SK Innovation,
South Korea's biggest oil
refiner by sales, plans loadings
of South Pars condensate
for early January delivery,
a company official was
quoted as saying.
The Asian country is the
largest buyer of Iranian
South Pars condensate, an
ultra light oil which is mainly
used as a raw material to
make petrochemicals like
plastics.
South Pars condensate
accounted for 70% of Iranian
crude bought by South
Korea which imported
around 1 million barrels per
month of the light crude.
South Korean refiners
and petrochemical producers
suspended shipments of
Iranian crude and condensate
in July for the first time in six
years, ahead of the early
November deadline set by
the US to end trade with Iran.
The US government,
however, gave waivers to
Iranian oil importers as it
decided on Monday to reimpose
sanctions lifted under
the 2015 nuclear deal on the
Islamic Republic.
SK Innovation said the
waiver is for six months
though it can be extended
and that the company was
looking to diversify supply
sources. According to S&P
Global Platts Analytics,
South Korea would be able
to take around 4 million
barrels a month (130,000
bpd) of Iranian crude and
condensate.
Iran sanctions could lead to trade in Turkish lira, say experts
ANKARA: The U.S.
re-imposition of sanctions
Washington announced
new sanctions on Monday
targeting Iran's energy and
with its shipping industry.
eased worries of supply
reduction in the global
markets after the sanctions
went into effect.
Mehmet Koc, domestic
policies coordinator of the
Center for Iranian Studies
in Ankara, said although
Turkey is not a party of the
sanctions, the move may
pose problems for bilateral
trade ties of the two countries.
Stating that oil and gas
trade are conducted in dollars,
Koc said Turkey will
continue to import Iranian
oil and gas.
"Turkey is among eight
nations granted temporary
waivers from the sanctions
but at this point payment in
dollars will not be possible,"
Koc said.
He recalled that talks
regarding trade in local
currencies between Turkey
and Iran still continue.
Speaking about sanctions
on the Iranian financial
sector, Koc said:
"There is no solution left
for Iran except trading in
the Turkish lira. At least it
will need to use lira while
obtaining basic needs from
Turkey."
Head of Turkish-Iranian
Industrialists and
Businessmen Association
(TISIAD) Perihan Fatih
said the more sanctions on
Iran increase the more
Turkey's importance for
Iran rises.
"Many European countries
can be reluctant to
trade with Iran therefore
they may do that via agencies
in Turkey," Fatih said.
Fatih noted that introducing
regulations for
trading in local currencies
would be beneficial and
advantageous for Turkish
and Iranian business circles.
Addressing business
both countries have huge
He said that Pakistan
to Tajikistan including
sugar, textiles, cement,
sports goods, surgical
instruments, pharmaceuticals
and leather products
and stressed that Pakistani
exporters should step up
efforts to exploit these business
opportunities. He said
in 2013, Pakistani cement
companies were enjoying
60 percent market in
Tajikistan and Pakistani
cement manufacturers were
invited to put up cement
plants in Tajikistan, but due
Balochistan.
The FPCCI elections are
of Pakistan, Chief of Army
Staff and Prime Minister
of AJK.
SRO 1305 to backtrack financial inclusion,
encourage cash economy: Junaid Makda
President
of the Karachi Chamber of
Commerce & Industry
(KCCI) Junaid Esmail
Makda, while strongly
opposing the issuance of
SRO # 1305 (I)/ 2018 by
Federal Board of Revenue
(FBR), stated that by giving
access to account holders
info under the said SRO,
efforts being made for
financial inclusion will be
backtracked because it
would encourage cash
economy due to fear of
harassment.
In a statement issued,
Junaid Makda pointed out
that under this SRO, FBR
has prescribed a Cash
Withdrawal Statement for
banks to report information
of persons who have withdrawn
cash exceeding
Rs50,000 in a day and taxes
deduction thereon for filers
and non-filers, aggregating
to Rs1 million or more during
the month.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan
and Indonesia agreed to initiate
a study for establishing
the feasibility of further
expansion of Preferential
Trade Agreement (PTA).
This was agreed in principle
in a meeting between
Secretary Commerce,
Mohammad Younus Dagha
and Indonesian Minister for
Trade on the side lines of
Import Expo, Shanghai,
said in press release issued
by Ministry of Commerce
“Instead of seeking
information of both filers
and non-filers, it would
have been appropriate to
seek information of non-filers
only which would have
encouraged non-filers to
become filers, resulting in
broadening the tax net of
the country”, he added.
Referring to Karachi
Chamber’s clear stance
against the massive discretionary
powers to FBR,
President KCCI stated that
the present government has
assured from time to time
that no harassment will be
done either by FBR or FIA
but such SROs may lead to
further harassment to the
masses, including the
members of the business
and industrial community.
He said, “As we firmly
believe in legislations, the
Karachi Chamber has
always vocally opposed the
SRO culture which has to
be ended as it only paves
here Tuesday.
Both the sides agreed to
further strengthen the trade
relations between two countries.
While Younus Dagha
raised the issue of delay in
notification of inclusion of
20 additional tariff lines in
Pakistan Indonesia
Preferential Trade
Agreement (IP-PTA).
Indonesian Minister for
Trade assured that the notification
would be issued by
way for harassment and
corruption.”
“If given access to
account holders’ details,
more avenues of corruption
will open where tax
officials will start making
under the table money by
harassing people and businesses”,
he added.
He urged the Ministry
of Finance to withdraw the
‘draconian’ provisions and
laws which have extended
immense discretionary
powers to the officers of
Inland Revenue. “We
believe it is a core issue,
resulting in loss of productivity
and mental torture to
the business community”,
Junaid Makda said,
“These laws have kept a
large number of potential
taxpayers out of the tax
regime. In fact these laws
are a deterrent to broadening
of tax-net and have
resulted in promoting the
culture of tax-evasion.”
Pak- Indonesia agrees
on expansion in PTA
The Finance Minister
assured the President of
the the Federal
Government's full support
to the development of the
financial sector of AJK and
completion of ongoing
development projects.
The Finance Minister
said that development of
the tourism sector was a
priority for the Federal
end of November in this
year.
Inclusion of these tariff
lines in PTA would help
Pakistan’s exports to
Indonesia to grow further.
Products like Denim fabric,
Ethanol, home textile,
towel, rice and mangoes
would benefit.
Indonesia has also
issued notification to allow
import of Mangoes from
Pakistan for the upcoming
season.
President AJK discusses development
projects in AJK with Asad Umar
Prime Minister to China
was landmark in Pakistan-
China relations which will
pave the way for comprehensive
social development
in Pakistan, in addition to
the accelerated economic
growth and development.
Sardar Masood Khan
congratulated the Finance
Minister on the impressive
outcomes of the China
visit, as well as reiteration
of strong commitment by
both sides to invest their
political will, energy and
it would pay special
attention to the development
OPPO A7 is the super full screen phone that redefines high-end design
KARACHI: With industry first
big batteries and affordable pricing,
the A series has been among
OPPO’s best-selling smartphones
since launch. The new OPPO A7
doubles down on the two important
features that customers value
most with a 13+2MP dual rear
cameras plus 16MP front camera
with 4230mAh huge battery. A7
also now introduces something
entirely new to the A series; a
unique Waterdrop screen and premium
texture on the back cover.
With its entry-level price plus two
beautiful color options Glaring
Gold and Glaze Blue, OPPO A7 is
a truly high-end smartphone.
Commenting on this, George
Long, CEO OPPO, Pakistan said,
“The new series in OPPO's portfolio
adds more ease and convenience
into the lives of everyday
users. With advanced features like
the dual camera, larger screen, and
an extensive battery life, consumers
will now be able to perform
daily tasks without having to
worry about charging their
devices every now and then.
OPPO A7 is an all in one solution
that offers great features and
impeccable design in an affordable
price.”
Waterdrop Screen—a gift from
nature
OPPO has always believed a
smartphone is not just a tool for
communication, but more importantly,
a piece of art. The screen
occupies almost all of the A7’s
display except for a small droplet
shaped notch. We call it
“Waterdrop Screen”, inspired by
a water drop that is about to fall.
Natural and less obtrusive,
Waterdrop Screen has been widely
accepted as the most beautiful
notch type smartphone in the
market.
The tiny water drop contains a
16MP front camera and sensors
that makes A7 the phone with the
highest screen to body ratio of
the OPPO A series. With the 6.2
inch HD+ Incell Screen, the
screen to body ratio of A7 is
88.4%, providing a more immersive
using experience no mater
playing games or watching
videos. A7 also applies Corning
Gorilla Glass, providing greater
resistance to scratches. Now you
don’t need to worry about dropping
the phone on the floor or
anywhere else for that matter.

Sarfraz determined to
break New Zealand jinx
ABU DHABI: Pakistan
captain Sarfraz Ahmed
insists his team can end an
11-match losing run to New
Zealand when the two sides
meet in the first one-day
international in Abu Dhabi
today.
Pakistan crushed New
Zealand 3-0 in the preceding
Twenty20 series on
Sunday — their second
whitewash in a week following
a romp over
Australia, also in Dubai and
Abu Dhabi.
But Sarfraz, part of the
team in the last 11 one-day
internationals all of which
Pakistan lost, want to finally
win against New
Zealand.
“It's important to break
that losing streak and we
need to bring improvement
in our performance in oneday
internationals,” said
Sarfraz on Tuesday.
Pakistan lost the last two
matches in a 3-2 series
defeat in United Arab
Emirates (UAE) in 2014,
before losing 2-0 in 2015,
2-0 in 2016 and 5-0 in
January 2018 — all in New
Zealand.
“If you look at our losses
most of them were in
New Zealand where conditions
were different and we
lost due to top order failure
where we need to improve,”
said Sarfraz.
Pakistan also failed to
qualify for the final of the
Asia Cup held in UAE two
months ago, losing both
their matches against archrivals
India and going down
to Bangladesh in a clash
which decided the finalist.
India won the Asia Cup
by beating Bangladesh.
Sarfraz said a tough
opponent in New Zealand
— ranked third to
Pakistan's fifth in one-day
standings — will help the
team build for next year's
World Cup in England.
“New Zealand is a good
team of this format but we
have momentum of the
Twenty20 series so we must
win this series and that will
help towards building
towards the World Cup,”
said Sarfraz.
The last two matches are
in Abu Dhabi (Friday) and
in Dubai (Sunday).
Pakistan then play South
Africa in South Africa,
Australia (in UAE) and
England in England -- five
one-day internationals each
— before the World Cup.
Unhappy PCB stops Mohsin Khan from
making ‘controversial’ statements
LAHORE: Pakistan
Cricket Board (PCB)
Chairman Ehsan Mani is
reportedly unhappy with
Mohsin Khan, the chairman
of a newly formed cricket
committee who suggested
that Sarfraz Ahmed be
relieved of Test captaincy.
“Mohsin Khan’s comments
are creating difficulties
for the cricket board,” a
PCB source said.
The source further said,
“PCB has asked Mohsin to
stop giving out controversial
statements and focus on
the cricket committee that
he has been appointed to
lead.”
The PCB is also discussing
a possible replacement
of Mohsin Khan; if he
continues to stir trouble then
the board may consider a
new chairman for the committee,
the source added.
Mohsin Khan had aired his
views about Sarfraz during
a recent interview with a
local news channel. "I have
said it before and I will say
it now too, with Sarfraz I
was saying you got a new
guy in and don’t put the burden
of three formats on
him.”
“It will take such a physical
load on him, T20s,
ODIs and then Tests; if he is
captain he will not get any
mental relaxation.”
“Sarfraz’s body language
was so down. I felt
sorry for him that he’s had
so much pressure put on
him, with T20s, ODIs and
Tests. There’s no doubt he is
so talented and it’s not as if
he is 35-36."
Mohsin Khan's comments
drew criticism from
the cricketing circle, as fans
and some former cricketers
objected saying the statements
were ill-timed and
uncalled for, especially at a
time when the Sarfraz-led
side is bagging consecutive
victories.
Mani, while addressing
the media last week, had
said that the decision to
keep Sarfraz as the captain
of the team would be taken
after the recommendations
of the cricket committee.
This was in conflict with his
earlier statement in which
he had reposed "full faith in
Sarfraz as Pakistan captain
across all formats."
Sports Reporter
KARACHI: Two international
sport. World Taekwondo
(WT), under the leadership of
South Korean Choue Chungwon,
and the International
Taekwondo Federation
(ITF), led by North Korean
Ri Yong-son, agreed to set up
a joint body next month to
narrow their differences in
governing the sport. "This is
a big day for everyone who
loves taekwondo," Choue
said. "Despite our differences,
both of us have the
same goal, and today we took
a meaningful first step
toward that goal." Details of
the integration have not been
specified. The committee
will decide what kind of
changes should be made and
how to do them. In a significant
agreement, WT and the
ITF will also work together
for collaborative overseas
events. "The International
Olympics Committee (IOC)
decided to add taekwondo to
one of its main sports in
1994," Choue said. "Next
year will be the 25th anniversary
of the achievement. It
will be great to demonstrate
our sport to other countries
together. I'm sure the IOC
will welcome it." Ri said he is
organizations. "By signing
the agreement, we opened
doors for a bright future for
one taekwondo," he said.
"We will make sure that we
Korea's, but not our own anymore,"
Choue said. "There
talks. Together, we will keep
taekwondo as truly a global
sport." The ITF was established
Pakistan would not allow
the strategic balance with
India to be disturbed, as the
equilibrium guarantees
peace in the region.
This was stated by
Adviser to the National
Command Authority Lt
Gen (R) Khalid Kidwai
while naugurating a twoday
international conference
on ‘Nuclear
The conference has
been organized by
think tank.
is being addressed by a
parts of Jammu region while
they were migrating to
seeking to examine the
impact of doctrinal shifts,
the capabilities possessed
by the nuclear weapon
states in the region, the
induction of new technologies
by the concerned
countries, and role of extraregional
powers on the
strategic stability in South
Asia. The think tank
believes that equilibrium of
nuclear deterrence between
India and Pakistan is the
underpinning of the South
Asian strategic stability.
“The history of our
strategic force development
clearly indicates that
Pakistan has never allowed
this (strategic) balance to
be disturbed to our disadvantage;
we have always
found effective solutions to
redress induced imbalances
from time to time,”
Gen Kidwai said.
“Pakistan remains
unfazed and as before, we
have adequate response
options which will disallow
any disturbance of the
strategic balance or strategic
stability. That fundamental
policy will prevail,”
the NCA adviser underscored.
The strategic environment
in South Asia is
becoming increasingly
complex and unpredictable
in the long term as India
adopts provocative military
doctrines like cold start
doctrine and undertakes
Kashmiris on both sides
of the Line of Control and
world over are observing
Youm-e-Shuhada Jammu to
Pakistan to disallow any disturbance
of strategic balance in region
destabilizing actions like
nuclearization of Indian
Ocean and the acquisition
and development of ballistic
missile defense. India
has been doing this out of
its ambitions of regional
hegemony and achieving
the great power status.
“In the future too you
can be certain that Pakistan
will never allow the effectiveness
of its nuclear
deterrence to be eroded
notwithstanding efforts to
undermine it, the latest
example being the Indo-
Russian deal to induct five
systems of the S400 in the
Indian Air Force by 2020
with implications for
strategic stability,” Gen
Kidwai said.
