NCV COMMUNITY KATHERINE YATES Geotechnical Engineer From January to July this year, New College Village had the privilege of welcoming Ph.D. student Katherine Yates from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. With a Masters of Science in Engineering Geology, Katherine previously worked in the Geotechnical Engineering industry. Now carrying out a Ph.D., Katherine came to UNSW as a Research Practicum student for six months to work with Associate Professor Adrian Russell in the Civil Engineering School. “Getting the opportunity to learn from Associate Professor Adrian Russell (New Collegian 1993-94) has been the most valuable part of my visit to UNSW”, Katherine shares. “He is an expert in his field and a great teacher. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to come here and work with him.” Katherine came to UNSW to learn about unsaturated soil mechanics, and to use the hightech equipment in the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory. It was Professor Russell who recommended NCV to Katherine. The NCV community acts as a home away from home for many. For Katherine, involvement in social events and having other Postgraduate students around were significant in allowing her to enjoy and make the most of her time in Australia. “The culture at NCV is very friendly and supportive, which was great especially when I missed home”, Katherine says. “Living at NCV was really valuable to me. It allowed me to make the most of each day in Sydney, and enabled me to get involved in a fun community of people.” VIJAY PRAKASH 2nd Place at International ‘Day of Crisis’ Competition 22 New’n’Old 2018 Congratulations to NCV’s Vijay Prakash (NCV 2013-current) and the team of International Studies and Law students representing UNSW at this year’s International Day of Crisis Competition in Paris at Nanterre University. The team, consisting of five members including Vijay and New College alumna Annabelle Thorne (NC 2015-16), took home the trophy for 2nd place. The team drew upon international law and strategised for over 24 hours to resolve several major international crisis simulations. Teams from the most prestigious law schools, such as King’s College London and Universities in Russia, Germany, Belgium and France also competed. Teams were required to provide written and oral presentations, addressing various scenarios such as providing legal advice to undertaking negotiations on behalf of a state involved in the crises. NCV is proud to see many of its residents achieve great academic success in Australia and beyond. All the best to Vijay and Annabelle as they continue to excel in their fields of study.
ACADEMIC AWARDS AND PRIZES AT NEW COLLEGE VILLAGE XXXX NCV COMMUNITY The first semester NCV Commencement Dinner was a notable event with the outstanding academic achievements of residents, alumni and special guests being acknowledged. Among the high table guests were Dr Cecilia White, Dr Thamali Lekmage, Dr Elizabeth Marcellina and Dr Muhammad Aqib Chishty, all alumni or current residents who were commended for completing their PhDs in 2017. A big congratulations to all NCV residents and alumni who were recognised for their wonderful academic success at the 2018 Commencement Dinner.
