In order to safely contain radionuclides in the host rock in the long term, the mine openings of nuclear repositories need to be backfilled and potential pathways for fluids need to be sealed. Developing suitable backfilling and sealing materials is one of DBE TECHNOLOGY GmbH‘s key competences. This includes analysing the state of the host rock, selecting construction and sealing materials and adjusting their composition to their applications. When testing and demonstrating their suitability, visual examination methods can help in the diagnostics. In some cases, they open up a complete new world of crystal sculptures – works of art designed by mineral growth. With this calendar we want to introduce you to the play of light and colours and the beauty of these natural phenomena, discovered while working on mastering one of the major challenges of our generation – safe disposal of radioactive waste.
