Engagement of Engr. Emilson C. Gole Cruz and Engr. Kathleen Anonuevo in Japan
Kathleen and I have been together for
almost nine years now. We went in the
same University and met her there in 2009,
and we became a couple in February 2010.
Last 2015, we decided to pursue our careers
as Civil Engineers here in Singapore. You
know the story for sure – being an OFW is
never easy. And to pamper ourselves, we
try to travel as often as we can.
Travelling is more than just a way to destress.
It helps our relationship grow in
many ways – we see more of our strengths
and weaknesses, learn to appreciate those,
while appreciating other countries’ beauty
and culture. Travel is a good way to open
your mind, and doing it with somebody else
can help you to see things more clearly.
Everybody sees the world in a different way
and sharing that with someone can be a
profound moment.

Being in an almost nine-year relationship,
Kathleen and I have been talking about
getting married quite often. Everytime we
talk about it, I knew I need to make a move
to make it happen. I need to propose to her.
I need to ask her to marry me!
Kathleen really wants to visit Japan ever
since so I told her we will travel to Japan
this year. That would be the perfect place
for me to propose.
We arrived in Japan on a Saturday
afternoon. We had a great bowl of
authentic Ramen and Japanese Dumplings
after the long flight from Singapore.
We roamed around the busy streets of
Shinjuku where we saw Godzilla’s giant
head towering over the Toho Building in the
Shinjuku Ward. That next day is the most
special day I have been waiting for.
One of the most important parts of the
proposal are the photos. Luckily, I came
across Hiroya’s Instagram page (@_h1roya)
and asked him if he can help me with the
proposal. A Japanese student, Hiroya was
so kind to help and offers his photography
services at a very reasonable price.
I chose the Sky Deck of Mori Art Museum
at Roponggi Hills, which is located at the
center of Tokyo. With the height of 270
meters above sea level, it will give you the
majestic view of the Tokyo metropolis,
overlooking Tokyo Tower on one side and
Mt. Fuji on the other.

Kathleen already knew that we would be
having a photo session as I told her that I
want to have decent travel photos (learning
from our Thailand trip last year few good
photos), but she, of course, wasn't aware of
the proposal. We climbed up to the top of
the building, up to its helipad. Luckily, there
were no other people yet as we where there
as soon they opened the sky deck area at
11AM. As we were looking at the horizon of
Tokyo City, I started talking about us, and
that prior to our trip, I spoke to her parents
and siblings about our future. I dropped
down my knee in front of her and asked her
to marry me. Kathleen looked at me, saw
tears on her eyes, as she said yes.
