In an effort to support and
provide resources to every
resident, regardless of age,
the Lockport Township
Government has extended
a warm welcome to local
students to display their creative
works of art on one of
the walls inside the building.
“I think it just helps support
our students and helps
build their confidence to
see people looking at their
art, and I think that’s what
the Township has to do,”
Lockport Township Supervisor
Ron Alberico said. “We
work a lot with our seniors
and try to give them something
to do, we have to work
with our youth and give
them confidence.”
It was Alberico’s idea to
display the exhibit of children’s
art on the first floor
of the building at the end of
last school year, and reached
out to the part-time office assistant,
Beverlee Alberico,
who is also his sister-in-law,
to help make his idea come
to life.
“He’d like to involve as
many people in the Township
as he can,” Beverlee
said. “He realized that the
children weren’t really represented
in the township office
building.”
Beverlee made a list of
different schools to reach out
to and emailed them over the
summer to see if they would
be interested in having their
student’s artwork displayed.
Each school’s work is to
be on display for a month
throughout the school year.
The first school to respond
and show interest in participating
in the project was the
Art Club at Taft School. The
club was started this school
year by Girl Scouts Troop
71513 as part of their service
project because Taft doesn’t
have an art program in the
curriculum.
“Art provides an outlet for
students to show their creativity,”
the Art Club sponsor
Julie Chesser said. “They all
seem so happy while they’re
doing the art and unfortunately,
like I said, they don’t
have that opportunity during
the school day, so they finally
have a chance to do art.”
The first meeting was
held at the end of September
where nearly 60 of the approximately
300 students in
the school showed up. It was
during the second meeting
in October that the students
created artwork to be selected
for the display at the
township building. The Girl
Scouts and Chesser chose
20 pieces that they thought
stood out the most. The remaining
pieces that weren’t
selected are to be displayed
at Taft School.
The wall features a variety
of colorful designs including
sketches of people,
rainbows, outdoor sceneries
with trees and birds, and
more. The students used
crayons, colored pencils
and markers to create their
masterpieces.
“I think it recognizes children’s
ability and interest in
art, and by putting a display
up I know that when you do
that a child is recognized for
an ability and it reinforces
their interest and creativity
and really who knows where
it may go if they’re recognized,”
Beverlee said. “It encourages
them to go further
and be more creative.”
Beverlee said she started
off displaying only 20 pieces
of artwork to see if it takes
off to where more students
are interested in participating.
In the future, she said
she would like to have high
school students and senior
citizens showcase their
work, as well. During the
summertime, she would like
to have the seniors display
their pieces.
“The building is open our
regular hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
every day, Monday through
Friday,” Ron said. “Everybody’s
welcome to come in
at anytime and look at the art
or anywhere in the building.
We put this building together
for our community.”
