that the government
believes in complete independence
of media and has
no role in the downsizing
their respective media
Responding to opposition
remarks, he said the
government was with the
media persons.
PakistanTehreek-e-Insaf
government (PTI) came
into power with active support
of media. Downsizing
was the decision of media
He said there should be
ISLAMABAD: A new
study is the first to suggest
that the brain cells that multiple
sclerosis attacks, called
oligodendrocytes, may actually
play a significant role in
the development of the disease.
The researchers behind
this discovery are from the
Karolinska Institutet in
Stockholm, Sweden, and
they hope that their findings
might lead to a new class of
multiple sclerosis (MS)
therapies.
According to the MS
Trust, about 2.5 million people
around the world currently
live with MS. In MS,
the immune system attacks
oligodendrocytes, the cells
that create myelin.
Myelin is a fatty substance
that coats nerve cells
in the central nervous system
(CNS). It protects and
insulates these neurons,
allowing the quick and reliable
transmission of electrical
impulses.
The erosion of the
myelin sheath interrupts the
transmission of signals
along nerves, which causes
the symptoms of MS, such
as vision problems, muscle
In most cases, doctors
are unable to identify the
cause of MS until some
years after the onset of the
disease. While the majority
of people with MS only
exhibit mild symptoms,
serious cases of MS can render
people unable to write,
talk, or walk.
Recently, Medical News
Today looked at another
study investigating the root
causes of MS. The results
suggested that bacteria in
the gut may trigger the
immune response that causes
the deterioration of
myelin (demyelination).
In September, we examined
the findings of another
study, which indicated that
the transmission of an erroneous
signal from the brain
to the lymph nodes may
instruct immune cells to
swarm the brain, leading to
demyelination.
In the CNS, cells called
oligodendrocytes create and
lay down the myelin sheath
that surrounds neurons. The
loss of these cells is partly
responsible for MS progression.
The latest study, published
demonstrates that oligodendrocytes
behave in a similar
Progenitor cells are cells
that can turn from one type
of cell into another.
"All in all, this suggests
that these cells have a significant
role to play, either in
the onset of the disease or in
the disease process."
The Karolinska Institutet
team used a cutting-edge
technique called single-cell
RNA sequencing to examine
in great detail the genetic
activity of individual
mouse cells, which they had
modeled to exhibit characteristics
of MS.
The researchers say that,
although their study looked
mainly at how these cells
operate in mice, they have
also observed similar results
in human samples.

Theresa May's future hangs by a thread, her
reputation on the line, her tenuous grip on the
British PM's post set to weaken if her latest
Brexit draft runs into trouble with members of her
cabinet. Indications are there will be a storm, and it
is unlikely that the agreement will make it past the
finish line. It's been a disunited home front at every
level during the two years since the United
Kingdom voted to exit the European Union.
However, what stood out during the rough and tumble
of the PM's negotiations with the European
Union and her own government, has been her
dogged determination. She has remained optimistic
under trying circumstances - when the odds were
stacked against her. Her detractors, who believe it is
their political duty to oppose any agreement with
Europe, are already calling it a sell-off (like they
usually do) but the PM said the talks were done in
good faith and was the best deal she could possibly
get under the circumstances.
The cabinet clearance is the first step. If that happens,
EDITORIAL
Media Morals: A Great Issue,
Or 'No Issue At All'?.
Clear It Or Clean It!
OPINION
ETHICS, morality, principles and objectives in
newsprint journalism and its mediums including
newspapers and magazines as well as in electronic
media including cable network / television channels,
internet and mobile mediums that help lead, form and
establish and promote public opinions of conscious and
unaware nations in many different right and wrong aims
and purpose, charters and directions, ideologies and
schools of thought are a great issue and of paramount
importance.
SOME people of course do not think so. They feel
that morality and principles in media is not a big deal and
is not an issue at all.
THIS confusion needs to be resolved: Clear it or
clean it!
INSTEAD of being and serving as a guideline in old
days, ethics and objectivity is being viewed as the problem
itself in media nowadays!
MEDIA and media persons need to have an ethical
and moral responsibility to report the news and disclose
the facts, but thanks perhaps to the advent of the television
medium - though that's not to say it wasn't a problem
before - journalists have given up on integrity in
order to please advertisers and others. There are too
many instances of reporters invading the privacy of citizens,
misreporting statements, and just flat-out lying in
order to get a sensational story. There should be stiff
penalties for people in the media who fail to work ethically
and morally and they should not be allowed to continue
to work in the field if they do not express the facts,
realities and truths, social evils, low key and high profile
crimes, of laymen and highest of leaders, point out to
small and big treasons against own people and nation,
outline problems and present solutions. Media can
refrain from getting money to resort to half-truths, halflies
for defaming, extortion and blackmail.
RESPONSIBLE for the dissemination of information
to the public, media has a direct effect on public
opinion and must be regulated to ensure that the public
has an accurate perception of the world around them.
Morality, principles and values are a major issue in
media. Ethics are extremely important in the practice of
journalism. Media owners, employers and employees
can conduct their practice in an ethical and honest way.
Without that, the information they present may lack
credibility and authenticity. The way part of the media is
run right now is irresponsible and unaccountable.
JOURNALISTS have to make a series of hard choices.
If economic, social or political concerns compel one
to indulge in lies to earn more money and benefits, then
conscience may prick, and one gets used to it. For the
better media persons, it may be sometimes acceptable to
work with and convey moral beliefs to others to groom
a society toward a positive direction. Many including
social and political leaders may say "No" to impose
moral decisions and make it binding on others. But all
people do almost exactly just that: they impose it, regardless
of good or bad consequences, except self glory and
benefits. But can morality exist without empathy or concern
for well-being? Possibly not.
DEPENDANT on one's own professional outlook as
well as personal depth on morality, one higher value
without bias and prejudice of race, color, caste or creed,
nationality, or geographical borders of countries that
divide us may be in the present reflection of the human
race as one being. It doesn't matter if we can comprehend
it or not. It's who we are: all human beings owe their origin
to their original first parentsAdam and Eve. Or so the
holy books and God say.
WE can exist without caring or concern for fellow
human well-being. A moral system based on a social
contract may be followed by the individuals of a society
for whatever individual or collective reasons, without
concern for empathy or well-being. In reality, moral
imperatives do help preserve legal imperatives.
HOWEVER, it is possible to use mutual cooperation
to convert individual selfishness into a moral system, for
the greater selfish gain of all individuals. But these two
things aren't the same. Empathy has more to do with concern
for emotions. But people are more than just emotions.
If all you care about is someone's emotions you'll
buy an alcoholic person more wine or a narcotic drug
addict some more hash or heroin. If you care about his
well-being you'll convince him to get help not to intake
those harmful substances.
COLLECTIVE wisdom such as articulated is the one
that also preserves inherent rights of an individual in
society.
MORALITY is our guiding light. Morals without
empathy or concern equals lack of morals. They are the
opposite of one another. Our morals are what guide our
day to day decisions; they allow us to make good decisions
and allow us to be aware of bad decisions that may
hurt or harm others as well as self. A person without
morals, is a person without a conscience. Morality is a
social construct that has developed because it makes living
in a group better for everyone but that's possible
when rights of all persons in a group are protected.
Otherwise, a just system won't be in place.
IF one does not care for others, one wouldn't act
morally, unless one is afraid of the consequences.
BUT even that requires concern for well-being, even
if only for your own. If you don't even care about yourself,
you wouldn't be able to develop any moral sense.
Morality is well-being itself. Low moral standards can
function fine with little empathy. And when people start
demanding moral standards without a sense of empathy,
there dawns tyranny. Then we justify cruel punishment
when we decide that someone is wrong if they don't fit
our small minded ideals.
OFTEN politics and morals work against each other.
The reason is because many times what is politically
expedient is not morally correct. Often, politicians are
too caught up in political games and they lack any real
power to effectively change the status quo because there
is too much political force being spent on maintaining
the status quo.
POLITICS can make or break morals in raising a
good or bad society. So, a great responsibility is borne by
the politicians. However, politics once held in highest of
esteem with almost every school going child wanting to
become a politician, politics is now dehumanized and
degenerated to an extent that very few may like to
become a politician. For, nowadays, in order for someone
to be a successful politician they must have the
capacity to lie. Since lying is morally considered a
wrongful act it cannot be ignored that politicians are
sometimes expected to lie in order to achieve their goals.
This makes them less moral.Any time you are in politics
in order to gain power or gain votes you must say one
thing while you likely will take action the exact opposite
way, If you are going into the political field you have to
be ready to bend your morals in order to win. Or stick to
your morals and suffer a defeat.
KT edit: Britain cannot have
it both ways on Brexit deal
The cabinet clearance is the first step. If that happens, it would require
parliamentary nod, and no one is predicting which way that will go.
one is predicting which way that will go. Northern
Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party has expressed
fears. May needs their approval for the Brexit deal
and also for her survival. If they back out, it could
go down head first. More politicking, petty politicking
is expected as the Labour Party has taken the
issue to the streets. May could point to making
major headway on the 'no separate' customs border
for Northern Ireland in her talks with the EU. An
arbitration clause has been agreed upon to keep the
United Kingdom out of a "backstop" customs
arrangement. Boris Johnson, May's rival, who earlier
resigned as foreign minister, said the customs
arrangement was 'unacceptable'. For politicians in
the UK, nothing on Brexit is acceptable. That's the
underlying problem. Labour wants to go against the
people's wishes while the ruling Tories battle their
own conflicts. But the truth is this: the UK's politicians
cannot have it both ways - with and without
the Europe. There's no highway in sight, either.
Britain must go alone on a less travelled, lonely
road.
Saudi Arabia charges 11 in
Chief prosecutor calls for death penalty against guilty parties, requests 'relevant information' from Ankara
RIYADH: Saudi
Arabia’s chief prosecutor’s
office on Thursday
announced it had charged
11 out of 21 suspects in
relation to the murder early
last month of journalist
Jamal Khashoggi.
At a press conference
held in capital Riyadh, the
prosecutor announced his
intention to call for the
death penalty against anyone
found guilty of ordering
and carrying out the
journalist’s murder.
The prosecutor’s office
also said it was awaiting
Turkey's response to its
BERLIN: A European
army cannot be an alternative
to NATO, the military
alliance’s chief Jens
Stoltenberg said on
Thursday.
Stoltenberg cautioned
European allies against
duplicating military efforts,
in an interview with the
German weekly Die Zeit,
following calls by the
French president and
team, along with interrogations
of 21 suspects now in
custody.
“After summoning three
additional suspects, the
public prosecutor has
indicted 11 individuals
whose cases will now be
German chancellor for the
creation of an EU army.
“The Europeans have
already made it clear that
their attempts for common
defense would reinforce the
European pillar of NATO.
So long as this continues, I
welcome these European
efforts,” he said.
“But a European army
cannot be an alternative to
NATO. The NATO alliance
referred to court,” the statement
read.
It added: “The remaining
suspects will be investigated
in order to determine
their role in the crime.”
It went on to assert that
the public prosecutor had
is already serving as a platform
for cooperation
between our European
allies, such as in Kosovo or
in the Aegean Sea,” he
added.
The NATO secretary
general stressed that
European efforts for common
defense should be
complimentary to NATO.
“For me it’s important
At UN climate talks, Trump
team plans sideshow on coal
WASHINGTON: The
Trump administration
plans to set up a side-event
promoting fossil fuels at
the annual U.N. climate
talks next month, repeating
a strategy that infuriated
global-warming activists
during last year’s talks,
according to three people
with knowledge of the
matter. As with the 2017
gathering in Bonn,
Germany, the administration
plans to highlight the
benefits of technologies
that more efficiently burn
fuels including coal, the
sources said.
This year’s talks in
Katowice, Poland - located
in a mining region that is
among the most polluted in
Europe - are intended to
hammer out a rule book to
the 2015 Paris agreement
on climate change, which
set a sweeping goal of ending
the fossil-fuel era this
century by spurring a trillion-dollar
transition to
cleaner energy sources
such as solar and wind
power.
Even as the Trump
administration aims to promote
energy strategies that
could detract from those
international goals, it also
plans to let State
Department officials continue
negotiating the climate
accord - a recognition
that the next U.S. president
may drop the nation’s
opposition to the pact.
“The White House
seems to have taken the
view that it’s important to
let technocrats complete
the work of the rule book.
It’s in the U.S. national
interest to be at the table
and see an outcome that
emphasizes transparency,
holds countries accountable,”
said one of the
sources, who is familiar
with State Department
plans.
The White House and
the State Department did
Man charged over
Melbourne lawyer's death
SJA Jafri
Bureau Chief Australia
MELBOURNE: Police
have charged a man over
the death of Melbourne
businessman and lawyer
Joseph Acquaro, who was
found shot dead outside his
gelato shop in Melbourne's
inner-north in 2016.
Acquaro, 54, was a
prominent criminal lawyer
who had represented several
Melbourne gangland
crime figures.
He was also a past president
of the Italian Chamber
of Commerce, and director
of the popular ice-cream
and Italian cake shop,
Gelobar.
In March 2016,
Acquaro's body was found
in the early hours of the
morning by a garbage truck
driver, on St Phillip Street
in Brunswick East, around
the corner from his business.
Police said a 69-year-old
Reservoir man was arrested
in Ringwood about 9:45 am
yesterday and he has been
charged with murder, following
an extensive investigation
into the death.
Acquaro had severed
ties with many of his former
mafia clients after a falling
out that had become
increasingly bitter in the
year before his death.
He was warned by
police in June 2015 that his
life was in grave danger and
needed to take measures to
protect himself. But he
refused to heed their advice.
Months before his death,
Gelobar was severely damaged
in a suspicious fire.
Police have previously
revealed they had a key suspect
in the murder. The suspect
was arrested and questioned
within a week of the
shooting but denied all
involvement.
It's understood the same
man was linked to a fire at
Gelobar in January and a
physical altercation with
Acquaro.
duplicate what NATO is
cannot strengthen European
defense, without strengthening
NATO,” Stoltenberg
said. NATO and the EU currently
countries in common.
Saudi-led coalition
halts Hodeidah assault
as West presses for
Yemen ceasefire
ADEN/DUBAI: The
Saudi-led coalition has
ordered a halt in its offensive
against Iranian-aligned
Houthi rebels in Yemen’s
main port city of Hodeidah,
three sources said on
Thursday, in an apparent
concession to Western pressure
to end the war. Key
Western allies including the
United States have been
urgently calling for a ceasefire
ahead of renewed U.N.-
led peace efforts. The nearly
four-year-old conflict has
killed more than 10,000 people
and caused a humanitarian
disaster in an already
impoverished Yemen.
“The coalition has
instructed forces on the
ground to halt fighting inside
Hodeidah,” said one procoalition
military source. A
source in another military
LONDON: Multiple
ministers, including the
Brexit secretary, resigned on
Thursday saying they could
not support Prime Minister
Theresa May’s Brexit plan,
which the Cabinet approved
with majority vote on
Wednesday.
"Today, I have resigned
as Brexit Secretary,"
Dominic Raab said on
Twitter.
"I cannot in good conscience
support the terms
proposed for our deal with
the EU. Here is my letter to
the PM explaining my reasons,
and my enduring
respect for her," he wrote.
Raab said in his resignation
letter that he could not
support the proposed deal
requested the death penalty
for five individuals who
had been implicated in
ordering and committing
the murder “and for appropriate
sentences [to be
handed down against] the
remaining indicted individuals”.
The public prosecutor,
the statement went on, has
requested “that the Turkish
authorities sign a special
cooperation mechanism
specific to this case with a
view to providing them
with results of the investigation,
pursuant to Saudi
law, and obtaining the relevant
evidence and information
now in possession of
the Turkish authorities”.
Khashoggi, a frequent
contributor to The
Washington Post, was
killed on Oct. 2 inside the
Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
After weeks of denying
any involvement in the
crime, Saudi Arabia later
admitted that Khashoggi
had been killed inside the
consulate but claimed the
Saudi royal family had no
prior knowledge of any plot
to murder the journalist.
RAMALLAH: Palestine
Liberation Organization
(PLO) Secretary-General
Saeb Erekat on Thursday
called on the international
community to help
Palestinians gain independence
from occupation.
Erekat made the
remarks in a statement
issued on the occasion of
the 30th anniversary of
the Palestinian declaration
of independence,
which is marked each
year on Nov. 15.
On Nov. 15, 1988, late
Palestinian leader Yasser
Arafat, speaking from
Algeria, announced the
establishment of an independent
Palestinian state
with Jerusalem as its capital.
"Palestine is still waiting
for the world to fulfill its
political, legal and moral
responsibility to translate
the declaration into reality,"
Erekat said.
This, he said, could only
be achieved "by establishing
the State of Palestine on the
ground -- with its capital in
East Jerusalem -- and ensuring
a just solution to the
issue of Palestinian
refugees”.
but Carrie Underwood
and her unborn baby stole
the limelight at the Country
A heavily pregnant
Underwood, one of country
music’s biggest celebrities,
chose the live televised
show in Nashville to reveal
for the first time that the
second child she is expecting
Underwood, who cohosted
the show with singer
vocalist of the year for the
fifth time and brought the
house down with an emotional
performance of her
single about bringing people
together, “Love Wins.”
“Thank you God. I have
been blessed with so much
Stapleton won three
he lost the night’s biggest
GUATEMALA: The 911
emergency call came in to
the U.S. Border Patrol’s
Tucson station around
midnight.
Joselino Gomez
Esteban’s voice crackled
through an older cell
phone from somewhere in
Arizona’s Sonoran Desert,
the final stretch of a 2,000-
mile (3,218 km) migration
from Guatemala.
Gomez said he was
lost. He needed help. His
nephew had collapsed,
wouldn’t respond.
Each year hundreds of
migrants die trying to
cross into the United
States from Mexico.
Thousands more need rescuing.
The Border Patrol
tallied 294 deaths in fiscal
year 2017, the last year for
which data is available.
But experts believe the
actual figure is far higher.
Some who die are never
found.
A quarter of those
known deaths - 72 people -
came in the Tucson border
sector, where summer
temperatures routinely hit
triple digits. Between
actress Nicole Kidman.
“I am shocked beyond
shocked,” a tearful Urban
said. “I feel very grateful
that I get to do what I do.
God bless country music.”
Garth Brooks opened
the show with a minute of
silence for the 12 people
shot dead last week at a bar
in Southern California that
was popular for country
line dancing. The gunman,
a former U.S. Marine, died
of an apparently selfinflicted
gunshot.
“Tonight, let’s celebrate
their lives,” Brooks said.
“Let the music unite us
with love in their enduring
memory.”
On a male-dominated
night, Kacey Musgraves,
30, won her first big CMA
prize, taking home album
of the year for “Golden
Hour.” No women were
among the five nominees
this year for entertainer of
the year.
After 2,000 miles they crossed the
U.S. border; then tragedy struck
thought they could completely
cut Iran’s oil
exports, but they realized
themselves in the days
[ahead of the reimposition
of the sanctions] that this is
neither practical nor possible,”
he told a cabinet
meeting in Tehran on
Wednesday, referring to
because of two reasons.
“First, I believe that the
regulatory regime proposed
for Northern Ireland presents
a very real threat to the
integrity of the United
Kingdom,” he said.
“Second, I cannot support
an indefinite backstop
arrangement, where the EU
holds a veto over our ability
to exit,” Raab added.
Raab has become the
second Brexit secretary to
granted to major buyers of
Iranian crude after the
that the US sanctions
will fail to affect Iran’s oil
his varied views on Brexit
from those of the prime minister’s
the terms of the proposed
deal with the promises
our manifesto at the last
a matter of public trust,”
Raab said.
Another Cabinet minister
Esther McVey also followed
Raab and resigned as Work
and Pensions Secretary, saying
she could not support the
official.
Finding Gomez, 43,
and his nephew, Misael
Paiz, 25, would prove difficult.
The cell phone
Gomez used did not provide
his GPS coordinates.
Using the cell phone towers
that transmitted the
911 emergency call did little
to help; the signal had
bounced off towers up to
100 miles (161 km) away.
Headquartered in a
modern two-story brown
brick building, the Tucson
Border Patrol sector is
responsible for 262 miles
(422 km) of sweeping
desert, canyons and cactus-studded
hills. Gomez
and Paiz could have been
anywhere in this territory.
Agents were not even certain
they were on the U.S.
side of the border.
Oppressive US sanctions target
Iranians, won't affect oil sales: Rouhani
many ways of selling oil,
and that will render their
sanctions ineffective.”
The Iranians, Rouhani
added, have sent the US a
very clear and decisive signal
that "We will sell our
oil and will preserve our
financial relations with the
world.”
Oil prices slip on concerns of looming
oversupply, economic downturn
SINGAPORE: Oil
prices slipped on Thursday,
weighed down by rising
supply going into a market
in which consumption is
expected to slow down
amid a glum economic outlook.
Front-month Brent crude
oil futures were trading at
$65.88 per barrel at 0441
GMT, down 24 cents, or 0.4
percent, from their last
close.
U.S. West Texas
Intermediate (WTI) crude
futures were at $55.96 a
barrel, down 29 cents, or
0.5 percent.
Since early October, oil
prices have lost around a
quarter of their value as
supply soars just as demand
is expected to slow down
along with an economic
downturn.
“Asian refiners and consumers
we speak with are
mentioning initial concerns
of slowing demand,” said
U.S. bank Morgan
Stanley said in a note on
Wednesday that China’s
economic “conditions deteriorated
materially” in the
third quarter of 2018, while
analysts at Capital
Economics said China’s
“near-term economic outlook
still remains downbeat.”
China is the world’s
second-largest crude consumer.
Meanwhile, data
released this week showed
economic contraction in
industrial powerhouses
Japan and Germany in the American
third quarter.
At the same time, supply
has been surging, especially
due to a 22 percent rise in
U.S. crude oil production
this year to a record 11.6
million barrels per day
BMB Trade Group of
Uzbekistan seeks
partners in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD:
Trade Group was one of the
largest business group in
Uzbekistan and it was now
looking for partners in
Pakistan as it considered
Pakistan an attractive market
for business and investment
activities. This was
observed by H.E. Mr. Furqat
A. Sidikov, Ambassador of
Uzbekistan while addressing
business community at
Islamabad Chamber of
Commerce & Industry. He
accompanied Mr. Bekzod
Mamatkulov, Chairman of
Supervisory Board, BMB
Trade Group and introduced
him to the local business
community.
H.E. Mr. Furqat A.
Sidikov said that Uzbekistan
and Pakistan enjoyed deep
historic bonds and friendly
relations. He said that
Uzbekistan was the biggest
trading partner of Pakistan
in Central Asia as the bilateral
trade between the two
countries reached USD 95
million in the last nine
months and with the current
trend, it was expected to
reach USD 300 million in
few years. He said many
Pakistani companies including
Hashoo Group had presence
in Uzbekistan and his
country would welcome
more companies from
Pakistani for JVs and
investment. The
Ambassador said that his
country wanted Trilateral
Trade Commission comprising
Pakistan,
Afghanistan and Uzbekistan
to promote trade, logistic
and investment.
Chinese business men interested to invest in energy sector
Kot, Gorakh Hill, shrines of
sufi saints and other beautiful
sites have attractions for
tourists. Hyderabad
Division produce oil and
gas as well, he informed.
Mao Chaoyin has said
that it was their introductory
tour of Hyderabad
Division and in 22-member
delegation mostly representing
different companies
of China.
like in 2014, when prices
crashed under the weight of
oversupply, the
Organization of the
Petroleum Exporting
Countries (OPEC) is discussing
supply cuts.
To do so successfully,
OPEC – under the de-facto
leadership of Saudi Arabia
– will need Russia on its
side, which is not an OPEC
member.
A joint effort between
OPEC and Russia to withhold
supply from 2017 was
a major contributor to crude
price rises last year and in
the first half of 2018.
“Russia and OPEC and
Saudi Arabia – they are
observing the market. If
they see that there is disbalance
between supply and
demand, (they) will of
course take a joint action to
reduce supply,” said Kirill
Dmitriev, head of Russian
Direct Investment Fund, the
country’s sovereign wealth
investment body.
Injustice: Federal
govt urged to
provide due gas
share to Sindh
KARACHI: Saleem
Parekh, President, SITE
Association of Industry, in a
press statement, demanded
of the federal government to
provide gas to Sindh
province in accordance with
the provision of the
Constitution of Pakistan.
Parekh quoted Article
158 of the constitution titled
“Priority of requirements of
natural gas”. He said that it
was crystal clear in the constitution
that gas producing
province shall have precedence
over other parts of the
country but unfortunately, it
BMB was not being done in the
case of Sindh province
which produces 73% of
total gas of Pakistan and
consumes only 29% of the
gas it produces. Today gas
production in Sindh stands
at 2900 MMCF while only
1200 MMCF is being provided
to the gas producing
province.
He said that government
had announced incentives
for the five zero-rated sectors
aiming to boost exports.
Non-Zero-rated industries
are essential part of the
export value chain. Closure
of gas for three months to
non zero-rated industries (or
closing down of industries
for three months) will badly
impact export orders and
shortage of industrial raw
material. Closing down of
these import substitute
Industries will increase cost
of production of exporting
units and also create mass
employment.
for 2018-19. The Group saw steady revenue growth compared to the same period
last year, however profits were impacted by the significant rise in oil prices, and
unfavourable currency movements in certain markets, amidst other challenges for
the airline and travel industry.
The Emirates Group revenue was AED 54.4 billion (US$ 14.8 billion) for the first
six months of its 2018-19 financial year, up 10% from AED 49.4 billion (US$ 13.5
billion) during the same period last year.
Profitability was down 53% compared to the same period last year, with the
Group reporting a 2018-19 half-year net profit of AED 1.1 billion (US$ 296 million).
The profit erosion was primarily due to the significant increase in fuel prices
of 37% compared to the same period last year, as well as the negative impact of currencies
in certain markets.
The Group’s cash position on 30th September 2018 was at AED 21.5 billion (US$
5.9 billion), compared to AED 25.4 billion (US$ 6.9 billion) as at 31st March 2018.
His Highness (HH) Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief
Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said: “Emirates and dnata grew steadily in
the first half of 2018-19. Demand for our high quality products and services
remained healthy, as we won new and return customers across our businesses and
this is reflected in our revenue performance. However, the high fuel cost as well as
currency devaluations in markets like India, Brazil, Angola and Iran, wiped approximately
AED 4.6 billion from our profits.
“We are proactively managing the myriad challenges faced by the airline and
travel industry, including the relentless downward pressure on yields, and uncertain
economic and political realities in our region and in other parts of the world. We are
keeping a tight rein on controllable costs and will continue to drive efficiency
improvement through the implementation of new technology and business processes.
“The next six months will be tough, but the Emirates Group’s foundations remain
strong. I’m pleased to note that our home and hub in Dubai continues to attract travel
demand, as the airline saw 9% more customers enjoying Dubai as a destination in
the first half of 2018-19 compared to the same period last year. We expect this
demand to remain healthy as new attractions come online and the city gears up for
Dubai Expo 2020. Moving forward we are firmly focussed on sustaining our business.
We will do this by being agile to capitalise on opportunities, and investing to
serve our customers even better with high quality products that they value.”
In the past six months, the Group’s employee base reduced by 1% compared to
31 March 2018, from an overall average staff count of 103,363 to 101,983. This was
largely a result of natural attrition, together with a slower pace of recruitment as the
business continues its various internal programmes to improve efficiency through
the implementation of new technology and workflows.
Pakistan look to Yasir, Abbas
to tame 'tough' New Zealand
Pakistan's World Cup
squad announced
ABU DHABI: Pakistan
skipper Sarfraz Ahmed is
confident leg-spinner Yasir
Shah and medium pacer
Mohammad Abbas can
combine to tame "tough"
New Zealand in the first
Test starting in Abu Dhabi
Friday.
The fast-rising Abbas
took 17 wickets in a twomatch
Test series, including
a ten-wicket haul at
Sheikh Zayed Stadium in
Abu Dhabi, as Pakistan
beat Australia 1-0 last
month.
Abbas, who made his
debut last year, has 59
wickets from his first 10
Tests and will be backed
by the spin duo of Yasir
and Bilal Asif.
Sarfraz said he expects
more from Yasir, who
managed just eight wickets
against Australia.
"Yes, our bowling
attack is good," said
Sarfraz on Thursday.
"Abbas has been bowling
superbly while Yasir
didn't look as great as we
had expected, but in this
series, I expect more from
SYDNEY: South
Korea's An Byeong-hun
eagled his penultimate
hole to take a one-stroke
lead after the opening
round of the 104th
Australian Open at a wet
and windy Lakes Golf
Club on Thursday.
An, aiming to become
the first Asian to lift the
Stonehaven Cup, snaked a
putt uphill into the hole from
25 feet with his third shot at
the par-five eighth which,
combined with five birdies
and two bogeys, gave him a
five-under-par 67.
That was enough to
give the former U.S.
Amateur champion a onestroke
advantage over
Australians Matt Jager,
who also bagged an eagle,
and amateur David
Micheluzzi, who was making
his debut at his home
Open.
Yasir."
Yasir has been a match
winner on the neutral venues
of United Arab
Emirates (UAE) where
Pakistan have been forced
to play since a terrorist
attack on the Sri Lankan
team suspended international
cricket back home.
He took 15 wickets in
the 1-1 series draw against
New Zealand in the UAE
in 2014. But Pakistan have
not beaten New Zealand in
a Test series since 2011,
and Sarfraz is not taking
them lightly.
"It was good overall,
everything was good," said
An, the son of two 1988
Olympic table tennis
medallists.
"There are a lot of holes
with the side winds and
you have to judge it perfectly.
I think I got lucky
with tee time today playing
the back nine first when
the wind was a bit less than
on the front nine."
Mexican Abraham
Ancer made light of his
long journey to Sydney
after playing on home soil
at the Mayakoba Classic
last weekend by brushing
off a couple of early
bogeys with five birdies on
the back nine for a 69.
Australians Marcus
Fraser, Adam Stephens,
Dimitrios Papadatos also
shot 69s before the worst
of the rain swept over the
course, and they were later
"New Zealand are a
good side and gave us
tough times both in the
Twenty20s and one-day
internationals," said
Sarfraz of the preceding
series.
Pakistan crushed New
Zealand 3-0 in Twenty20s
while their one-day series
was shared 1-1 after the
third match ended in a no
result due to rain in Dubai.
Pakistan will resist the
temptation of playing the
newest pace sensation,
Shaheen Shah Afridi,
whose nine wickets earned
joined in a share of fourth
by compatriots Blake
Proverbs and Cameron
Percy.
Matt Kuchar, the highest-ranked
player in the
field and the winner of last
weekend's Mayakoba
Classic, had one of the better
rounds among the late
starters, mixing two early
bogeys with four birdies
for a two-under 70.
"They were very tough
conditions," said the world
number 29, who ended up
in a share of 10th.
"That first hole was
playing so hard and I was
thinking we're in for a
long day. Thankfully, I
escaped with a bogey on
the first hole and played
some pretty good golf
from then on in."
Kuchar's fellow
American Keegan Bradley
shot a level par 72, while
him man-of-the-series in
ODIs. Abbas is likely to
share the new ball with
Hasan Ali with Yasir and
Asif assisted by
Mohammad Hafeez in
spin. New Zealand skipper
Kane Williamson, who
returns to the squad after
missing the third one-day
with a groin strain, hopes
his team adapt fast.
"Obviously, coming
into Pakistan's home series
there is a lot of work to do
in terms of the overseas
sides adapting to the conditions
as best as they
Novak Djokovic beats Alexander
Zverev and reaches semi-finals
LONDON: World number
one Novak Djokovic
became the first man to
reach the semi-finals of the
ATP Finals after a clinical
win over Alexander
Zverev and a favourable
result in the group's other
match.
After a very physical
and close first set, the 31-
year-old Serb ran away
with the second to beat the
German 6-4 6-1.
Djokovic, chasing a
first ATP Finals title since
2015, reached the last four
when Marin Cilic beat
John Isner later.
"I don't think it was
breathtaking tennis but a
win is a win," he said.
"I played well midway
through the second set and
started to swing through
the ball.
"I had not served that
well but he made a lot of
unforced errors which
helped me to win."
Indeed, it was a doublefault
from Zverev that
handed Djokovic the first
set and a total of 33
unforced errors that contributed
to the 21-yearold's
downfall.
Zverev himself later
later seemed to imply that
fatigue had perhaps also
played a part, saying the
length of the tennis season
was "ridiculous".
Sachin Tendulkar's portrait
in Bradman museum
Sports Reporter
KARACHI: The portrait
of India's master-blaster
Sachin Tendulkar will be
unveiled at the Bradman
Museum on December 2,
according to Monica
Donoso, the Media and
Cultural Projects Officer at
the the Bradman Centre:
the Home of Cricket
Memories, Borwal,
Australia.
"At our upcoming summer
Mega-Exhibition, the
public will first time be
able to see this portrait, but
officially it will be displayed
in the museum on
December 2", speaking
exclusively, she said.
"We are trying to invite
Indian team and will be
happy if at least some players
remain present. An invitation
will also be sent to
Sachin Tendulkar but will
respect his busy schedule".
Late Don Bradman had
respect for Sachin and had
specially invited him on his
90th birthday.
Sachin's portrait was
prepared by famous artist
Dave Thomas.
Later, speaking exclusively,
Thomas said, "during
Sachin's visit to
Bradman museum, I was
fortunate enough to spare
sometime with the legendary
batsman and it took
about a month to prepare
this portrait which has
Sachin in two different
poses- (a) sitting and relaxing
on a stool and (b) action
photograph".
"Sachin is a wonderful
man and was very co-operative
during my session
with him".
Thomas, hailing from
UK has interest in all sports
including Rugby. He has
seen Sachin playing in
Australia.
He has made portraits of
several cricketers, including
Sir Gary Sobers, Dr.
W.G.Grace, Denis Lillee,
Richie Benaud with
Bradman,
two other PGA Tour regulars
Brandt Snedeker and
Brendan Steele went oneover
for their rounds.
That was one better
than Cameron Smith, the
highest ranked Australian
in the field in the absence
of Jason Day, Adam Scott
and Marc Leishman.
Cameron Davis
endured a nightmare start
to his title defence with a
quadruple bogey after
dumping two balls into the
water at his first hole.
The young Australian
followed that with a double
bogey at the second
and a bogey at the third
and only partially undid
the damage with four
birdies, signing for a 76.
"I hung in there well,"
he said. "To be honest, I
had no idea what was
going on with the first
