November 2018
Dear Friends,
By the time you read this letter, all 11 victims murdered on
October 27 in the worst mass murder of Jews in this country
will have been laid to rest. Within three days of the shooting, a
community-wide vigil was held on the JCC’s front steps. Over
three hundred community members attended. Words of support
have been pouring into the JCC from our friends across the
community.
Some of us who are older have experienced the ugly face of
antisemitism while we were growing up. However, most of our
Just as the nation creates its own history,
so, too, is it created by it.
children, fortunately,
have not. Until now.
Their world has been
turned upside down and
they are now filled with anxiety and fear for their own children.
Now, it is more important than ever to have our institutions
thriving.
This heinous act must not diminish our spirit or alter our
mission in any way. In fact, if anything, our mission must be
reinforced and made stronger than ever before. Our presence
becomes even more essential to our community. This year it
is not only about the services that we provide, it is about our
presence and our need and right to exist.
We have been referred to as the Jewish community campus.
It’s the place where all can gather no matter their affiliation.
Yes, as you have heard us often say, we are the central address of
the Jewish community. We are home to several other extremely
important institutions in our community: The Syracuse Hebrew
Day School, Jewish Federation of Central New York, Jewish
Observer and Jewish Community Foundation of Central New
York. We house the archives of the Jewish War Veterans. Our
light must shine bright for all
to see and recognize as representing the strength of our Jewish
community.
We have many strengths and we are counted upon by many.
We support hundreds of local working families with quality
childcare and seniors with our kosher meal program. Hundreds
of children each year experience our summer camps—one of the
largest in Onondaga County.
During this time of year, the Jewish Community Center along
with many other fine organizations bombard you with end-ofthe-year
letters. And, yes, a year ago I told you that we needed
your support now more than ever. But in truth, we always need
your support. If the JCC of Syracuse is to survive as a safe home
for our community, then we will always need your support.
Your past contributions have enabled us to meet the needs
of our members and neighbors. We once again look to your
generosity as we seek to maintain our key place within the
community. Please remember that when you give to the JCC you
provide a gift that will last throughout the year.
Help us continue our long tradition of serving the diverse
needs of our community. Your generous donation will positively
impact many lives. Please make a tax-deductible contribution
to the JCC today. The strength of our institutions is one of the
best ways to fight bigotry, hatred and evil.
Sincerely,
Marci Erlebacher Steven Sisskind
Supporting Your Center
Your continued financial
contributions, gifts, grants and
endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger
community six days per week,
year round. Funds raised are
critical to daily operations, special
programming, future development
and improvements, and
scholarships and financial aid.
Matching gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
matching gift programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor the
memory of a loved one, the JCC welcomes
tax-deductible gifts to one of our many
endowment or special funds. (See the
tributes on page 34.) The JCC will
send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
End-of-Year Donation
Designate your United Way
donation to support the JCC
If you participate in the United Way
Community Campaign where you work
or as an individual donor, please consider
designating all or part of your gift to the
JCC of Syracuse. This can easily be done
on the back of your pledge card. Your
generous contribution to the JCC through
the United Way donor program will go a
long way in supporting your JCC.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Public support is imperative to the JCC of Syracuse’s survival. The center depends
on these donations for a full 7% of its annual budget. We recently mailed out
our end-of-year campaign letters
requesting your generous support.
For your convenience, a copy of this
letter is reprinted on page 3 along
with the form to use for making a taxdeductible
end-of-year contribution if
you haven’t already done so. No gift
is too small and all donations to the
JCC are greatly appreciated!
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 25) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
Kashrut Policy
The JCC kitchen is under the supervision
of the Syracuse Va’ad Ha-ir. The kashrut
of approved foods that may be brought into
the kitchen. This list is available through
program staff members.
Room rental
The JCC rents a variety of spaces at
affordable rates. Our auditorium has
computer presentation capabilities and we
offer kosher catering. We also have various
conference rooms that can be arranged to
accommodate meetings, classes, parties
and other events. For details, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
The JCC is committed to staying open
during snowy and harsh winter weather.
to remain open for childcare. See page 15
www.jccsyr.org, Facebook and Twitter, as
well as listed on local TV channels 3, 5, 9
and 10, and on radio stations 620 AM, 570
PJ Library in CNY happenings
PJ families and the JCC’s Columbus Day
school-age vacation campers met up on
Oct. 8 at the East Syracuse Home Depot for
a special event. Children built their very
own set of wooden book ends. This is the
second year PJ Library has collaborated
with Home Depot to create a special
holiday related project for kids to build
themselves. Using wood, hammers and
nails everyone built a set of book ends
which they could decorate and use to
hold their collection of PJ Library books
at home. Kids love using ‘grown up’ tools
to create something useful, and they were
excited to build something from scratch
and feel proud of their creations.
Over the month of October, we asked
families to bring in extra PJ books to
donate to help North Carolina families and
Jewish institutions rebuild their PJ Library
collections in the aftermath of Hurricane
Florence. In times when families have lost
so much, the comfort of being able to read
a beloved book with your children is such a
comfort. As a community we sent 70 books
to North Carolina and have collected
many more books to be used for future
donations of this nature. We are always
accepting donations of PJ Library books
and appreciate your help very much.
Early Childhood Development Program
HOW YOUNg CHIlDREN Learn
Much of what children learn and do in
an early childhood program doesn’t come
home in a backpack. Young children
learn best through hands-on and direct
interactive experiences. This type of
learning happens through play and
exploration.
The Jerome and Phyllis Charney Early
Childhood Development Program uses the
Creative Curriculum paired with the NYS
Early Learning Guidelines, using a Reggio
Emilia inspired approach to learning.
The Reggio Emilia Approach is an
innovative and inspiring approach to
early childhood education which values
the child as strong, capable, resilient and
rich with wonder and knowledge. Every
child brings with them deep curiosity and
potential, and this innate curiosity drives
their interest to understand their world
and their place within it.
REggIO-INSPIRED
CREATIVE CURRICULUM
Curriculum for infants, toddlers
The Reggio-inspired Creative
Curriculum for preschoolers
There is an emphasis on the following
experiences and the teachers intentionally
tie in math, literacy, social studies and
science.
• Blocks
• Art
• Sensory experiences
Happy Chanukah!
December brings with it Chanukah, the “Festival of Lights,” and our classroom
Chanukah parties that have become a favorite ECDP tradition! Our Chanukah
parties will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6 for rooms 2, 7, 8, A and B. The boys
and girls will be eating potato lakes and jelly doughnuts. Songs will be sung,
dreidels will be spun, candles on the menorah will be lit and stories of brave
Maccabees told. Each child will also receive a specially decorated goodie bag
filled with a dreidel, Chanukah stickers and chocolate gelt to take home.
If your child will not be scheduled to attend our Dec. 6 Chanukah Party, you
may pay for extra time if space is available. Otherwise, parents may bring in
their child and STAY WITH THEM for the duration of the party. NYS licensing
regulations requires a specific student/teacher ratio be maintained at all
times in every classroom. Ratios vary according to age. Thank you for your
understanding and cooperation with this matter.
PREsCHOOl Book FAIR
You’re invited! We look forward to seeing
you at our annual Scholastic Preschool
Book Fair which will be held Jan. 21–25,
Early Childhood wing.
Our book fair is the perfect way to
update your home library at half the cost!
Many of our parents love to purchase
books for their child’s classroom. To make
this easier for you, please look for the
specially marked book bins at the checkout
which contains the wish list of books
for classroom libraries. Your child will
be able to place a special sticker inside
the book that lets the teacher know who
purchased it for the classroom. Please note
that purchasing a book from the wish bin
is optional and not required. The Early
Childhood Development Program greatly
appreciates all wish bin books that are
purchased.
PJ Library
The JCC has partnered with the PJ Library
(PJ for pajamas) which visits our program
monthly. Children are encouraged to wear
their pajamas to school on PJ Library days!
The PJ Library coordinator reads stories,
sings songs and plans activities with the
children. The program offers free, highquality
Jewish books and music each
month to children ages six months to eight
years all across North America to parents
raising Jewish children.
GRAND EVENT
Grandparents or other special people
are invited to have lunch with their
preschooler! After lunch and a special story
all special guests are invited to shop for
books from our book fair.
Save the date! Our Grand Event will be
held as follows:
• Jan. 24 – Classrooms 5, 7, 8
• Jan. 25 – Classrooms A, B, 2
Look for the invitation in your child’s
mailbox.
PARENT-TEACHER Conferences
Communication between parents and
teachers is an important part of our
program. During the school year teachers
are making observations and documenting
learning to guide instruction and promote
success in all areas of development. We
look forward to sharing it with you during
the parent-teacher conferences that will
be held Jan. 14–25. Please look for the
sign-up sheet outside the office. A second
conference will be scheduled in May.
Bands sought for 17th annual JCC Battle of the Bands
Calling all high school rockers! The
Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center
is once again seeking rock and other
musical groups to enter and play in its
Battle of the Bands concert. This 17th
annual competition exclusively for high
school bands will be held on Saturday, Jan.
19, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the JCC of Syracuse,
5655 Thompson Rd., DeWitt.
The winning band will receive a $200
cash prize and eight hours of studio time at
More Sound Recording Studio in Syracuse.
The Battle of the Bands entry form is
available online at www.jccsyr.org and at
the JCC’s main entrance reception desk.
Registration is $40 per band. The deadline
to enter is Jan. 11, 2019.
“Once again, we’re looking for high
school bands to complete in our 17th
annual Battle of the Bands,” said Amy
Bisnett, JCC associate director of children’s
programming. “This is a unique event and
offers a safe, inviting place for teens to play
for a crowd.”
All bands entering the JCC Battle of the
Bands competition must have a majority
of its band members enrolled full-time
at a local high school. Each band entered
will have 30 minutes to play and wow the
2018 JCC Battle of the Bands winner Churches and Graveyards, from Marcellus Sr. High School, rock out
during their high-energy set last January.
crowd on Jan. 19. The Battle of the Bands
concert has typically drawn up to ten
bands from all over Central New York. The
shows are filled with quality talent and get
the house rocking. Last year’s winner was
classic rock band Churches and Graveyards
from Marcellus Sr. High School.
Admission to the show is $10 and open
to the public. For every high school student
admission, the JCC will donate $1 to his or
body awareness. All ability levels are welcome and you
don’t need to be diagnosed with arthritis to participate.
ancient martial art of Taiji (Tai Chi). TaijiFit is
mindfulness in motion.
core stability across a wide range of resistance.
